It looks like you're doing these off the top of your head on the spot. You also don't give a lot of explanation other than something else existing. Each placement would be a lot more compelling if you could briefly talk about why it's worse than the tier above it and better than the tier below it. The whole point of a tier list is to be able to visualize how one element performs against every other element, and I'm not convinced we're getting a well thought out picture here. You can gloss over the minute details in the video, but please finalize the list itself before making the video. A lot of us would appreciate it because we're interested in an actual buying guide. The SHP9500 placement made me chuckle, but I have no idea if you put it there as a joke or not. Hope you take this into consideration, have a nice day!
Exactly, even I don't think that SHP9500 are that bad sounding, comfort wise also it cannot be called uncomfortable, and as the price goes I don't think they are very costly, they deserve better.
DMS hates the SHP9500s... Zeos and Joshua Valour always get on his case about it... LOL
@@Vracer111 Metal571 doesn't like them either. Josh and Z are.not the be all end all headphone reviewers
@@t.7527 DMS and Metal571 are critical/sensitive of treble and grain while Josh and Zeos aren't so much... SHP9500 treble is a little bit unruly and its a little grainy. Still a great headphone though, especially for the price! For all 4 I have to consider their preferences and biasis, and Zeos is way too off in some of his reviews (most noticeably the absolute disaster of the Focal Clear review)... Only reviewer I can blindly trust fully so far is Bert, my preferences seem to fully align with his... sweet biodyna bass & Porta Pros... though yet to do STAX Lambda/L series review.
@@Vracer111 thanks for the reply. What you said is something people need to consider when looking at these reviews of headphones....align it with your preferences. I always tell people to chase the sound signature that they desire.
The dt770 80ohm is actually my favourite headphone for movies
Can you do a pure sound quality and comfort tier list? Disregard the value for now.
I agree it would be a better list if he focused on on sound quality
Probably too late but yes please do that focus ONLY on audio quality
Yea I agree. Disregard the price, primarily because a lot of people also buy hi-fi cans that are either on sale or used. I'm one of those. I would definitely not buy a bnew 58x over a used 6xx which is essentially a 650 but cheaper. It'll cost the same as a new 58x.
that would be very controversial. according to some people in terms of sound quality vintage stax, k1k and hd598se and some good electrets would be on top
i agree
its much more useful to rate them purely by their merits and disregard the price. makes choosing less confusing, and makes the really high value options stand out
if a and s tier are reserved for only the mpst expensive stuff and rheres suddenly a 100-300 in b tier or a tier, then thats an impressive hp
D770 in F Tier? Like I can understand if someone doesnt like 1770 but 770 in F? The only headphone I never sold, they are really good at capturing tonality in the Z review sound demos. For music listening a little bright, tend to use the Sundaras for enjoyment.
I think he has said in the past that he's a bit sensitive to treble which would make the 770 a bit rough to enjoy. But regardless of reasoning, it's his list and we're all just here viewing it.
Then again Z's sound demos are all muffled, so they'd only sound right on otherwise unpleasantly bright headphones.
If u talk about the 80 you are right if u talk about the 250 oh no the 770 250 is one of the worst thing i ever hear
DT770 250ohm deserve that rating, if its the DT770 80ohm this is a travesty, they are excellent
@LightNessITA
Is there a big difference in sound between the modhouse argon and dt 770 80ohm ?
I'd like to see this done disregarding price and focused on sound quality only.
part 1?
wtf, he puts CAL! B tier just cause the price
Appreciate your effort always bro but I couldn't disagree more with so many of your placements. That's the beauty of audio though. To each their own.
This is a turbo troll homie
@@ryanfrancis3839 Well, hes actually completely right. On the basis of just ear shape and physics alone, what you and I hear are going to be completely different, just like how when you look at an image, the way your brain interprets colors is most likely different then the way my brain interprets the same wavelength of light. Then there's personal preference, from bass heads to treble chasers, to those who would stab you to enjoy a pure neutral experience. You can only use audio reviews to get a jist of what is absolute garbage build quality and sound signature wise (we both would be able to tell when something sounds hollow and airy vs up close and in your face), but the way your ear drums vibrate in reaction to sound waves is just inherently going to be unique exclusively to you.
@@gyroandhisballs awesome bro, this was so well said. Don't get me wrong, I couldn't give 2 shits about this topic. Nonetheless, fair and intellectual and knowledgeable.
Both y'all seem like real cool dudes, cheers.
@@ryanfrancis3839 I love how you call him a “cool dude” after completely shitting on something he clearly cares about a fair amount
Rank reviewers next. Could be audio could be other kinds of reviewers
Thats so funny the SHP9500 is at bottom of list while Koss75X is at top LOL
It would be interesting if you can do a video that scores the headphone solely based on its audio quality, regardless of its price. Price can vary in different regions.
Yes do this please
We can barely see the make and model from the size of the picture. Would be cool to either name them or edit the video with the written information.
Thanks for the upload!!
DT770 & SHP9500 in F tier?! Two headphones that in their price brackets are very hard to beat. You take price into consideration with other headphones, but not these two? Unbelievable.
They were hard to beat when the market was barren and empty.... a lot of better headphones have dropped in price in the past few years and those two just can’t compete anymore.
@@DMS3TV I respectfully disagree. I think you're right that we've had a lot of headphones drop in price the past few years, and that certainly allowed for more competition in these price ranges (thus different recommendations), but in my opinion it doesn't take away from the fact that these headphones are still great in their price brackets. Or were, in the case of the SHP9500, which is pretty much discontinued at this point, so getting it used is even cheaper. At the end of its life cycle, it was going for around $35, which is just insane for anyone that got it at that price.
Random AF.
shp9500 with oratory1990 eq sounds extremely good. If you are bothered by sibilant or whatever, definitely do that. You will need an amp though!
I have these and I like them (I've heard some of the other cans on the list), probably means I should disregard the ratings.
You can get the AKG K550 mk3 for dirt cheap now that its been discontined. I would argue that this should at least be an A tier headphone. The build quality and sound are exceptional for the price.
got one for 99 european dollars
@@starplatinum96 I bought a second pair when they were on sale for my bedroom set-up because I was so impressed with them 👍
They use to be the 553 weren’t they?
@@marksafe5463 Yes. Although I dont think the 553 had a removable cable and they might have made some tweeks to the sound on the 550 mk3
John Ellison yeah I looked on amazon they have 553 with removable cable that $199 and wondering if they changed the sound from the original.
i feel like you can stream this content and get some good conversations going with chat. Love these videos.
Excellent video, I really enjoyed it. I respect your love for head fi.
I have the HD650, And I used to like that sound signature a lot, but now it sounds muddy and dark and veiled, especially compared to the super fantastic clarity and crispness of the Grado RS2e. I hope you get to hear one someday
Very likely your HD650 sound muddy and dark because of an old/over used pads. diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/headphones/measurements/brands-s-se/hd650/
Igor D The pads are pretty good. my statement was probably not fair. I think if all I had was the 650, they would not sound at all this way to me, only in comparison to something like the RS2e.
When you found something you really love, you want to tell as many people about it as you can, that’s how I feel about the RS2e, it is such a special audio experience, it is so good I feel like some of these more high profile RUclips channels are judging Grado off of one or two poor headphones and they are missing the sweet stuff. On the other hand, I guess we all like different things
Grado make amazing headphones
This goes kind of fast. Is the final list available anywhere?
I have both dt990 pro and the 58X. Really, I don't know what to say about this ranking. To my ears the dt990 is so much better than the 58x in every aspect. Livelier, more fun, more accurate. Just miles ahead the 58x.
The 58x is definitely better than the 990 pro.
The 990 pro isn't a good headphone ...
And it's definitely not 'accurate'.
@@rajeebdas1724 if you seek for midrange only go with 58x, but if you like some treble and bass extension 990 pro is the way to go to my ears :)
Hey DMS, I'm curious why you put the DT770s in F tier. To me they seem to have the least treble of the Beyers, a pretty good bass set. What's your reasoning? Also, I'd like to agree with others that value should not be a factor in these tier lists, would make it much more objective and usable.
770 has a ton of teble. Super bloated bass, painful highs, muddy as shit, terrible mids.
I don't get it either. Got the Custom Studios which are tricked out 80Ω 770s and they sound phenomenal. They actually have super detailed treble, clean bass and impressive sound stage. smh...
@@maxsettings7884 does the 80ohm version have that issue?
MrBattlestar10 I just bought the 770 80 ohm and they just got shipped. Still waiting to try them out, I’ll let you know how they are when I get them. If they are as he says then ima return them to Newegg and look for maybe the custom games(beyerdynamics) or something else.
@MrBattlestar10 I have the 80ohm version and I disagree with everything he said. People have different ears though, and it depends what you’re looking for. They’re actually my favorite closed headphones, and I have tried many at different price points.
I haven’t heard many headphones myself, but you ranked the four I own in A, B or C, so I guess I’m happy. Still think the KSC75 deserves S tier. Unbeatable price to performance ratio, and reaches as low as a Porta-Pro if you put them in a headband.
I do find koss ksc75 be good like they may not be best buited headphones but their sound is wroth it I have msr7 these replaced them
Good thing about ksc75 is that if they break you can buy like 30 or more of them then you can buy one audio teachnica msr7 they may be better as wear on plane headphones beacuse they are closed back I am not sure haven't try them on plane yet but they block out decent amount of sound
So whats your opinion on the sony wh1000xm3?

I swear we will never know, everyone considers them to be better that Bose so I guess he would think somewhat highly?
Hype probably turns him off from talking about them
@@ayylmao8562 lol it's DMS we're talking about here. he literally hyped the audio gd r2r 11 and made the video hidden afterwards lmao
It's better than the QC35s for everything apart from a few missing features. The new XM4s improve upon everything that was missing from the XM3s, they outclass the QC35s now.
@@ayylmao8562 Nope, he called them bass boosted cans and left it at that. He is definitely biased, because he uses the QC35s everyday.
Another tier list YAY! Waiting for the next rounds! I'm for budget IEMs and amps first, but why not both? The "baller" category is usually bad value (as in, hundreds or thousands of dollars to get those few extra % in detail/quality/whatever) so to most of humankind it's something less relatable (still fun as entertainment, hopefully).
I think putting Value into consideration is a poor idea as value's fluctuate based on current Used/New pricing, just food for thought.
I called you bold in my comment for your first tier list video but when you put KSC75's next to HD650's I became Marsellus Wallace standing in a cross walk holding a box of donuts. Preferences and budget aside, you got balls, man.
That reference was perfect, but you know it means we end up shooting Zed in a basement.
@@DMS3TV He had it coming, though. It'll be our little secret.
Budget all the way!
One of Andrew Jones favorite speakers he designed were his Pioneer SP line up he says because it's easy to make a pair of speakers sound good when you have an unlimited budget, but it's a challenge to make a budget pair of speakers sound good.
Pulled the trigger on those for my home theater a couple years ago and I've loved them.
Those claps at the beginning had so much energy and speed.
The Sivga SV007s are quite impressive but require a pad swap: Brainwavz Hybrid (Oval... or XL for a larger sound-stage. For brighter sound, use Brainwavz XL Perforated Pleather. XL pads will have to be secured with rubber-bands to prevent them falling off.
DMS - That's OK - We ALL get tired - I love your reviews - I've got 6XX's and the Cal's - getting a THX789 (one of the lucky ones whose order was accepted) - nice if you could recommend a DAC for it.
SMSL Su-8
Both tiers of IEMs, but definitely want to see Audeze's LCDi4 ranked so leaning more toward baller. Great video.
nahhh 300 dollar headphones in budget tierlist xddd
i still pissed that they rank audio technica above shp9500 like wtf?
Wait, the last list was pretty accurate, but how are you going to do the dt-770s like that?
I'd like to see the same list, but just for sound quality, and again just for comfort. Now it's not really useful I think.
DMS: KSC75 gets a little irritating in the back of my ear.
Also DMS: Has gauges in his ears.
I don't have any mods and the KSC75 are quite irritating. They are also easy to break if you put them in a backpack for example.
If the 668b is in E-tier and you have incorporated price (value) in the tiering, does it mean they are the worst sounding? I am thinking about getting them. Are they worth it for music and little gaming (non-competitive)?
Those HD4xx are better sounding than everything else in B tier and should be A tier
Why separate top tier IEMs from bottom tier? If these headphone tiers prove anything is that money has little to do with performance preference or enjoyment.
Throw them all in together I say.
Damn is KSC75 really that better than SHP9500?
yes yes
The value on the KSC75 is really really good.
had both, ksc75 is much better
Yes imo
@Tom Alawatte what problem?
Why is the shp9500 f tier?? Just very curios. Looking into buying an open back for gaming and theyre only 55 euro's right now.
Too many variables! Haha. Would you do a set of tier lists based on sound quality alone?
How can you put the 880 in S but the 990 in D tier, they arent really that different?
saying that this is a terrible list is an understatement
Make your own.
Why use the hd 598 instead of the 599?
Also, if you're using the prices of discounted products vs their original msrp, it seems like theres a few other products that could be considered more value for the money as well.
What do you think about the Fostex T60 RPs. Do you agree witz Z, that they are Fostex answer to Argons and other mods? And do you think they can stand up to the Argons?
They sound totally different and are not comparable. The Argons utilise new driver backing material unlike the T60rp which is essentially a stock t50 with more open baffle ports, wooden cups, and altered rear filtering material.
Well there's a T60RP Argon now too...
So I'm buying the DT880's 600ohm (and liquid spark amp, already have the ifi zen dac) cause I bought suede dekoni pads for them (was already buying ones for my old pair of dt770s) but I assume the hd560s, HE 400i 2020 and HD58x would still be about as good a value right? I don't think I like that neutral a sound(you clearly love that, not judging but I have to keep in mind your taste when I think of my own) like the 560s have, my cans have been v-shaped (dt770, mh751) and I don't have a tube amp or really the budget for it atm. Would love to see a comparison between those 4 open cans I mentioned and call it THE KING OF BUDGET or something like that xD or maybe just a revamp of this list since many budget cans came out since then. Have a nice day! :-)
hit the like button before even watching love this series keep up the good stuff :)
Curious, why do you rate the DT770s so low? They can't be THAT bad
Budget iems
Both budget and baller amps
Please do dac/amp combos too
Thanks man this might have been the most helpful insightful video out ther
Why did you not use the newer Version of MDR1A the MDR 1AM2? And which category should be this in?
I agree with the Koss ksc75, but not with the Philips shp9500, also... Instead of the superlux HD 668, should be the HD681
$100 and under iems, Then $300 - $101 iems with the s tier from the under $100 competing with the under $300-$101 tier
Can we get a review of the CAL? I'm thinking about getting it as a closed back to accompany my 58x jubilee? Can't decide between the CAL or the dt770 :/
Lol @ “they all sound the same” (Grado’s) 😂😂😂
What a profoundly unqualified set of ears for a reviewer ?!?
Love this tier list because it's budget headphones and we're in a great depression. But can you do one with best comfort? With only the comfort rated in compared to the sound and the price. Because if it isn't comfortable what the hell is the point of buying them for us poor people. We can't own pairs just for the sound. Sound is almost second to me after comfort. I make a tier list of comfort ie. .7 or less head clamping. And then buy the best sounding ones of the 5 that make the list. Disregarding comfort is just INSANE. Beyerdynamic. Sorry. Wouldn't wear one if you gave me them for free. Clamp force is INSANE!!!! Glad you put DT770 dead last.
Question: why do you not like the superlux?
Curious, cuz I own a pair and love them for the price. I'm new to audio btw
KSE75 should not be possible, but they are here and man they kick some ass for the price,
QC335 think got to be the most comfortable things u can put around your ears unless your face down on a broad,
IEM full blone shootout should be good first
OK but why are DT770s at the bottom?
What's the difference between the 6xx and the 650? I thought they were basically the same headphone.
kmook76 he says 650 isn’t S tier solely because it costs too much. 6xx is exactly the same headphone but costs less. Puts in very low tier. Makes no sense.
For amps, baller amps only, for IEMs make two video like you did for headphones.
Agreed
Have you tried the t60rp yet? would love hear what you think about them
DT770s in F? I also have Hifiman X4 (basically identical to the 4XX) for reference, and the DT770 80Ω doesn't sound any worse to me.
Why did you put the 770s in F tier?
So... the hd650s are better than argons?
I like the list as a way to maybe find headphones I haven’t bought yet and should consider but man you basically put my fav headphones pretty far down. I love the k7xx and the HE4xx (ik you put it in B tier but for me it’s strong A tier). Also ik they aren’t in production so they don’t count but pre lambda stax and koss electrostatics aren’t very expensive and blow a lot of things out of the water so that’s my S tier.
"6XX" at 3:43 is the Massdrop K7XX for anyone wondering
You can take the KSC cans and put them on your porta pro head band + other pp mods work too.
Would like to have your review and comparison on the Samson SR850 please
Did you say "6xx" when you meant "7xx"? Because those look like the 7xx, not any Sennheisers (especially not the 6xx), and you have the 7xx linked in the description whereas the 6xx is missing.
Also, would you say, functionally, the 6xx and the 650s are interchangeable? That's what I've heard almost every reviewer say. Trying to figure out which Senns I'm getting in the future.
I meant 7XX
6XX and 650 are SUPER close. Only different by a couple DB in the FR.
yeah man I was shocked when he said 6XX E tier lol
Called the 7XX "6XX", I was confused because the picture looked like an AKG headphone, then I figured it out once I've looked at the description & headphone list.
Ight. I got the 559’s. And I recently got the sundaras. Here’s my take on the 559’s. Long term. With contrast. They are actually pretty ight. But my god are they boring. The resolution is ok. But meh. They are kinda similar in profile to the sundaras actually. The difference being, less resolution, less sub frequencies and harsher highs. However, the soundstage is ridiculous for the price. Amps do cool things to em. The final thing is, using em with sundaras for mixing is actually cheat codes…..everything sounds nice on sundaras. Even 3.4khz. So like, I use the sundaras for fitting everything in a mix. The deficits are obvious. Than I switch over to the 559’s and make it sounds good in those with compression and stuff. Than back to the sundaras for a final check of the compression levels and boom. The 559’s are honest bois. The sundaras are so resolving in contrast, you can hear over saturation on an ambient noise happening in the background, as loud as a cat yawning, sharing a frequency band with the main vocal. It’s disgusting.
Can you specify the pads of the argons ?
Which one sounds the best ?
depends on what you're after. Protein pads offer the biggest sound stage and have more of the "classic" argon sound with a bit of a treble peak. Lambskins have a little less staging but offer smoother treble. Eikon pads are more intimate with vocals. ZMF microsuede makes them SUPER dark/warm and tubey sounding.
@@DMS3TV thanks dms so what is your personal preference??

@@dannybos7024 that's cuz it IS cheap duh. I'd rather have a 40 dollar headphones that looks cheap and feels great (I like light feeling cans) rather than one that sounds like talking through a box. I absolutely agree, the argons were a big disappointment for me

You seem to have no idea what I care about...
@@DMS3TV I'll ask it differently. Have you ever heard the dt 770 80ohm version? They are nothing like 250ohm. If you heard them you have to admit they have great sound separation, details, imaging, soundstage(for close backs) and suppressed all the disadvantages of closed headphones like boxy sound ... far better than m40x. Different tonality is like different spice for your music, driver abilities are much more important. You need to review also m60x :D

P1 is getting alot of love but I'm gonna throw my hat in for the ER2SE
In my opinion, Ksc75 and portapro are the solid standard for c tier. The Sennheiser lineup doesn't go above b or below d. I would put most hifimans under 1000 in c, with the Sundara as the exception, being A tier. Dt770 pro is a B. The other Beyer's I've owned are c and below.
Why so much hate for the DT770? And why 880 over 990?
Shp how are they f bro please explain? 🤔 Please??
So why are the dt 770 an F? i was planning to buy those, and they are recommended in the hifi guide ?
It’s only good if you REALLY love bass. It’s a headphone recommended for bass canons.
To my knowledge there is no difference between a dt990 pro and dt990 edition, this looks like a rushed mess of a ranking based on factors I don't understand
To me budget is under 100.00
Finally sold me on the argon.
Do budget tiers please. If you have any chance to buy an Andromeda you probably know what you are doing. A budget tier is more useful to help people decide what to get.

HD6XX in tier E?? Should it not be A tier as it is 650? And with better value than 650, should be tier above 650 ;)
Tier list for 2020? Please include a koss kph30i too! Subbed!
Will the IEM section include earbuds too?
what is wrong with dt 770s ? , ive only heard good things
Yeah I Dont know why its in F teir Not bad compared to dt880
@@dvdr866 prefer DT 880 due to more neutral bass but both are nice
I recommend that if you do another one of these tier lists, that you should (in the description) put the headphone links in order of their respective tier. pls.
This was like watching a child scribble on a wall with crayons, meaningless and confusing.
