There was a render-glitch in the last upload causing the graphs to not be visible, so this is a re-upload 😄
Thanks. I'm watching it again to check out the graphs!
Thank you, I am watching again! 👍🍺
I have the V6 and had 7506 but now prefer the Hi-Res sound + bass response of the newer MDR-1AM2. They're my daily now and sound more refined.
thanks, it really malles it easier to follow!
Yes. I have all these in my collection. Could you please tell me what is the best earpad for each model ?
Something I really like from these headsets is how light the headphones are making it possible to wear them for a very long time before getting tired of wearing them.

Always nice to see a variety of affordable options.
I can’t resist budget-fi
I still have my MDR V6 from like 25 years ago. I think my brother got them for in 1999 or 2000 for Christmas.
Loving the aspect ratio ❤
Yeah, perfect for iPads!
The MDR-7506 were the first _good_ headphones I bought back in the day, and I still have them & enjoy them. Bought the Yaxi ST Pad 2 for them that I saw in a previous video of yours, because I have big ears, and they _really_ help with sound and comfort. 👍
You probly get this a lot, but I really love your editing and visual style. I always look forward to seeing a video from you whenever it comes out. You personally have gotten me so deep into this hobby within the last couple years and it's really made me appreciate my music more than I thought ever possible. Keep doing you.
Sony MDR 1A still my favorite headphones. They are just perfect.
Awesome & Many Thanks for the links to Amazon, Very Much Appreciated 😃
My 7506s have been my longest running headphones. I’ve gotten really comfortable with their sound so when I have em on and listening they seem to almost just blend into the background/atmosphere of what I’m doing.
They don’t get in the way and aren’t fancy but I love em
I've had my cd900st for nearly 10 years of daily use and they've done me good and still do. I've been through a few pairs of earpads (not counting the stock ones that I replaced only a few months in for obvious reasons), and have found and went back to Geekria branded pleather ones that I found quite soft, comfortable and sound fine, while still being very inexpensive. I'm willing to try out the Yaxi pads whenever my current ones wear out though. I'll also consider them for my M40x, on which I've had Shure 1540 pads on forever and are quite loose fitting...
Personally used the 7506 amd the cd900st in the past at gigs and man they do not sound old, as a friend likes to say "if it sounds good it stays good"
I just noticed that I made a typo oh my god

Great timing, I just picked up a 2nd hand pair hardly used to go with my 6XXs, Hifiman XS and Focal Elegia, will grab the yaxi pad as got free international postage to NZ with code :)
DMS! Thanks for posting this video.
As an audio engineer, I’ve been using the 7506s for almost 8 years now, and honestly it still holds up to this day! It really keeps me humble when I’m mixing, and points out things I don’t always hear. Only thing is the pads always start to fall apart after about 2 years, but I might try these yaxi pads!
Awesome vid DMS 🎧💙
I finally forsook my cheap-and-cheerful MDR-V150s (the phones everyone loves to hate) when I rescued a set of 7506 from the discard pile at work. New cushions and I'm good to go. MUCH better bass than the cheap V150s. Smooth and comfortable to listen to. Kind of reminds me of the Pro4AAs I had when I was a teenager, without the major head-squeeze I remember from the Koss. Now I'm buying up every used pair of 7506s I can get my hands on for home, work, backpack, ham shack... 😀
Major shoutout to Sony for including an exploded diagram and parts list!
These are impossible to destroy through normal use, the plastic piece around the hinge on mine broke but expose metal hinge was still usable. Really comfortable, I would recommend if you need a durable and budget friendly headphone.
Thank you for this review, Sony has been in the headphone business a long time and these are good products even by today's standards good to see them getting a little love.
How about a review of the new Sennheiser HD 490 Pro ?
I have a heavily modified cd900st with extra damping for bass extension, pads, and detachable cable. It’s my endgame for sure.
I really liked you experimenting with aftermarket pads on different closed-back headphones. I'd love to see Yaxi or stock velour pads on a HD 25, ZMF Beyer+ pads on a DT770, or YAXI/ZMF pads on a HD280 Pro.
1:1 is awesome
loving it bro
Love the old school 4:3.
Thanks as always for these types of reviews/videos! Would be interesting if you'd get a chance to check out the Fiio JT1 - under $80 closed backs (got mine for around $40 though!). Would just like to get your take on how they fare versus these OG Sonys. Always been interested in the 7506/V6, but wondering if they're worth 2-3x more than the JT1.
7506s are still a common and industry standard set of headphones for production sound mixers in the field for Film/TV/Media. The price point and the highs are what helps us pinpoint on what we need to listen and fix in the field. Tried and True Cans for sure!
great vid as per usual man!
guess since I already have the audiophile disease why wouldn't I get one of these :/ lol
Great review...!!! Three excellent options built by a highy reputable company that all come in at less than $100US, ear pad hack included...!!! Some aspects of the 21st century are tres cool...!!!
Did I spot some Cerakeys? Very nice. I have a set myself and thoroughly enjoy their sound.
I love them! Using them on silent alpacas
Funnily enough, while I was doing research on the 7506 and I looked if you've done a video on them yet or not. I have already bought mine used for $50 last week and I really love them. Also apparently there are lots of fake MDR 7506's on ebay so I would recommend people to do a bit of research before buying.
Yippee, graphs work DMS :D
Very cool! So great to have an affordable headphone just for, whatever!
Just in case you haven't heard it. Mix engineer Andrew Scheps (3 grammy awards), the one who shocked many by mixing material in headphones, uses 7506. Not some audiophile equipment. It surprised me a lot.
Because he's Andrew Scheps. And he mixes in headphones but not ONLY in headphones. An experienced mixing engineer will adapt to the sound and make decisions based on the traits of the playback system. If Andrew Scheps' first headphone is Susvara, he would easily "mix material in headphones' and potentially finish more work in headphones.
Hot take: Sony MDR V6 is the closed back version of HD58x. Good soundstage, deep base, well detailed mids, although a little sibilant treble.
Since I didn't get any reply to my previous question which I posted in DMS X page and here, I decided to buy both these cans and the yaxi stpad. I can confirm that my cd900st becomes a little less engaging with the stpad vs the brand new cd900st stock pads they came with.
The 7506 however are great with the stpads just like dms says on the video. The stock 7506 pads are thinner sounding than the yaxi pads.
Last thing is the stpad2. I ordered them as well. I will comment on this post once I get them
Sorry I missed your comment before. The ST2 pad on 7506 will elevate the treble a fair bit. I tried all the combos but really only could recommend it with the configurations I showed in this vid.
@@DMS3TV You mentioned you got these sonys used. Did you get to listen to the stock cd900st genuine pads on the cd900sts? They are the really thin ones much flatter than the 7506 stock pads. They sound amazing to me.
I got the stPad2. I am selling them right away. They don't sound good at all to me on either the cd900st or the 7506.
With the other configurations,I also ended up liking the stock pads more on the 7506 than the stPad 1. The stPad may be slightly more balanced but they make the sound also a little congested. Old alternative music has more of a headbanging factor with stock pads.
With the CD900ST their own very thin flat pancake of a stock pad gives great snap and slam but the stpad actually improves on them in decongesting the mids a little. The stock pads still hit a little harder in the upper midbass but the stpad makes them a touch more refined with my limited 10 song test yesterday. I just tried a mixture of audiophile acoustic recordings like sara k and livingston taylor then some rage against the machine and porcupine tree then some new wave and synthwave indie.
After some time, the 7506 stock pads actually sound best to me on the cd900st :D I am still waiting for some brainwavz pads to see if they get dethroned. The 7506 pads gives the cd900st a nice natural tonal balance. Bass maybe slightly lacking but so far these are the best pairing IMO.
I got my v6 for 5 bucks at a yard sale, became my end game. Only headphones I've purchased since then is a second pair for travel. If you listened to anything out of Japan from when they were manufactured it was probably mastered on them.
This is one of my favorite comments of all time. End game for $5 hell yeah. Good for you I love that.
Bought a Tungsten and I believe I'd like it more than the Empyrean based off every video and forum I've seen of both specifically in terms of sound. But I still want to see the Victor Studio headphones reviewed as NOBODY EVER talks about them and in Japan they are claimed to be the best of the best.
I'm pretty much a speaker guy at this point but kept my MDR-V6 around after getting rid of most my other (more expensive) headphones just because they are too good for the money and a good reference point so I was really surprised to see ASR kinda rip into these headphones. I don't know if its their measurement rig or what but they showed some pretty glaring flaws that I don't hear and don't see in your measurements which line up way more with what I hear.
9:25 In fact, I had bought a K361 after watching the DMS review about a year and a half ago. They sadly lasted only a year before the right ear went out...the QC on those is basically a lottery. They did sound great though.
Yeah I wish the k361 was better built. Mine still works but it’s missing some parts.
Do you have any thoughts on the mdr7509? Previously sold as a mdr7506 with larger drivers (50 vs 40mm)
You probably tried them already but the Sash Tres could make for an interesting review, the original version has been updated twice and is supposed to be improved now.
what are your thoughts on sennheiser hd 280 pros? they're my first proper headphones and I'm overall pretty satisfied with them, though the clamp was brutal on my first day and now they're decently comfortable for long listening sessions. now I wonder if I could've gotten something better while I had the chance
I wish Sony remade any of these with a more higher quality exterior and removable cables
The CD900ST with those pads actually looks a lot like a free field tuned headphone.
Hey, in Poland I only have the pads you linked for the CD900ST. Have you done research on how these pads affect the sound signature of the 7506? I'd love to change pads, but have no knowledge on whether the CD900ST and 7506 linked in the video are interchangeable :/
Just found this, i have sadly no way to get the pads you mentioned in the video in my country right now. Would the stock pads on the 7506 suffice as well?
If you might also answer, i have the 6xx as well, however the pressure of these is insane on my head, even after stretching them out time and time again on the metal bars, do you maybe have any tips regarding this?
So are these better than k361 and k371 in terms of sound???
Hey, sorry for being that guy and bothering you with this but, I'm a complete headphone/audio noob and have been curious about the Sony Mdr-cd900st ever since becoming a fan of "The First Take" a few years ago. I have a somewhat high-end gaming pc and currently use a pair of gen 4 Astro a50's that I originally bought for my Ps4 and I was wondering how they would compare to the Sony's or if they would bring anything to the table that the astros couldn't for not only gaming but also for music and movies. if I decide to get them would the cd-900st require an amp or dac or could I get away with just using an adaptor to plug straight into my pc.
Do I NEED to replace the stock pads to get decent sound?
Dms can you do a review of koss kph40 and compared them to other koss
Really interesting what the Yaxi pads does to 6k on 7506. On the stock pads it has a notable peak there and with these pads it has a huge dip. I wonder how that happens. It sounds better this way but I do EQ up the 6k dip a 3db, its still no way near as much 6k as the stock pads
How is the cd900st with those yaxis you put on the 7506
Is my screen broken? what is this aspect ratio.
Please review Sony MDR-1AM2
Retro aspect ratio video for retro headphones?
The original ATH-M50x pads fit nice on the 7506, improve the comfort and durability and don't change the sound that much, surely not for the worse. The DT250 velour pads change the sound too much.
loved all 3 pair of 7506 i own. my complain is that after few years of use bass disapper and all you can do is go buying another pair
sure that's not the pads? worn pads changes the sound a lot
@@rowank7663 it happened on 3 pairs and if you search on the net (even here on yt) you’ll find a lot of people who had the same experience

Do you have any thoughts on the 7506 with its stock pads? I‘ve been thinking about picking up a pair recently but I can‘t buy the Yaxi pads
I would really get it with the yaxi pads personally.

I‘ll probably go with a Koss KPH 40 instead then
Can you please do a review on HD490 pro.
Editing it at the moment 😄 I’ll be publishing 2 vids about it on the headphone show
I’ve been flirting with getting the CDS 900 ST for years. Is eBay the best place to get them? Amazon always usually has them for about over 100 bucks to 150.
I usually do eBay but Amazon is fine too. Just wherever you find a price you’re happy with. Either way they def need the pad swap.
Part two of the 3d printed speakers coming?
Yep! It’s finished. Just gotta schedule it
I only wish the cable was removable...
Something very weird is your graphs are the opposite of Crinacle's graphs for some reason. Relying on Crinacle's graph would make me buy the CD900ST if I'd want bass and a laid-back treble, and MDR-V6's if I'd want the opposite. 🤔
pad swap can change the sound a lot.
watching this video with the 7506 with stpads dx. DMS‘s voice sounds a little bit too much sibilance around about 8k ~11k on this can. The sound has no depth(typically on hear headphone) and no way this will take easily on eq because the distortion is quite high ( massive on low frequencies) and you will never want to disort the sound more. It makes it hard to do eq sweeping and low end eq decisions. The mids are fine but overall dt770p sounds better and are better for mixing.
Can you please do a review on the HD490 Pro?
Yep! I’m working on it 😄
@@DMS3TV you’re amazing man

Get a used PC38X or PC37X. Both are excellent for gaming. Also agree on the 560S
Thank you 😁
Couldn’t find them at less than 160 plus pads and shipping 😅
i have a cd900st and the very pad you are rocking there 'broke' the sound for me and i had to go back to sh!tty og pads. i also found the somewhat thick foam the og pads have stitched on makes the sound, again i hate to use this word but 'right'. for me the cd900st was the bassy-linear phones so surprised you described them treble oriented.. and i think it's the pads
Is this in 4:3 because they look like old headphones? lol
I don’t know where you source headsets but the 7506 in eu are 100€
Ah, in North America they’re about $40-50 on eBay.
These are all great headphones but I need padding in the headband.
Look at the zmf crescent snap. That's helped with a number of my headphones. I originally got it for the HD800S.
I had the same issue with the HD 600 regardless of the headband. Until I came up with the idea of cutting a piece from my fluffiest scarf and wrapping it around. Gamechanger, I'm telling you. No headband comes close to this comfort 😂✌try it out

Didn’t get many good results with it and the comfort wasn’t ideal. Unfortunate because I wanted to like it.

See if the measurement rig has flaws in it with the treble, why is it being used to measure things at all, if it’s not showing a true representation of the headphones frequency response?
All human ears have a resonance, as do all measurement rigs. It’s important to know where they are and account for this data. The only way to get a 100% true response on your head is with a mic inside your ear calibrated to your own head’s DF-HRTF.
@@DMS3TV ah fair enough. So then does that mean we shouldn’t be looking at measurements at all when assessing whether or not to buy a headphone?
@@RocketLauncherwithInfiniteAmmo Oh no they're definitely very important and useful overall. It's much more reliable than counting on subjective-takes alone. The important thing is knowing whats a measurement artifact and whats not (which I try to explain in these vids). It's highly likely that the key to sound quality and all of its facets lies within frequency response.
IMO get 7506 and learn to use EQapo then with profiles you have all.....

Ah yes, make the black bars even fatter in fullscreen 👏

That face when you find out the V6 is 7506 but with gold tip.
I mean... check the service manual. Same parts numbers, same drivers. Except the V6s are now discontinued.
They have different impedance curves and different frequency response (including if you use the same pads).

All of those are actually studio monitoring cans.
Yes they are
I think realistically, the V6 is going to cost more than $50 if you want it clean. Under $50, they’re all absolutely trashed. Not just the pads, but the headband, and the cable too. So you’ll end up spending that much money on replacement parts anyway, assuming you can solder.
payed 250$ for my CD900ST
regret nothing
Beware of fakes! The Sony MDR-7506 is a heavily faked item. Check stitching and labels against the real item. The issue is that the drivers are cheap.
how to make sure the 7506 isn't fake one? is the real one stitching more stronger?
@@bolulembut1132 There are web pages with detailed photos of common fakes. Visual inspection is sufficient to identify fakes. Stitching density/thickness & labeling are the most common indicators. Familiarity with real 7506 visual cues is the best way to spot fakes - There are no variations the real deal. The biggest savings found in the fakes are the crappy drivers.

RIP headphone market 2023 and forward. it was killed by chifi iems
I'm so sick of some of you subjectivists not using Harman target curves in your FR measurements. I get you guys don't like objectivists and measurements, but come on, Harman curves are the only ones backed by ACTUAL science, and they're easiest to understand. These headphones measure very poorly and it's even more apparent when put over Harman curve, very poor bass and big dips in high FR. That's not very good.
So here’s a few notes.
DF with a -10db slope measures almost identically to the Harman curve (which is why I’m using it).
There is not a measurement rig that you can buy that is fully compatible with the harman target. It was made using a gras rig with a non-standard custom pinna.
Any measurements you see comparing to the harman target are an approximation and not an exact because of this. Dr. Olive and I have talked about it before :)
The most reasonable thing to do is to read through the harman research and apply the same bass/treble modifications to the DF-HRTF of the measurement rig. Which is what I’m using here.
So yes, I am essentially using the harman target, but on a full B&K 4128C head and torso simulator.
No response?
Both the V6 and 7506 are overrated and outdated. They are fine for video production and evaluating noise, but not for music. And the thin pads will fall apart relatively quickly.
What your recommendation?
They're not audiophile grade headphones. Not even hi-fi
These are studio tools.

He made a point of that
