- I was fortunate enough to catch this nice and very large swarm of bees. I think this colony will be a great addition to my stock.

We are so glad you show it all! My hubs and I felt so sorry for you when you showed that hive last year that starved out! I think we felt as bad as you did! But we all live and learn and if someone makes a mistake and we can all learn from it maybe we can save more bees! Thanks again for all you do!!
You’re welcome and thanks for your kind words!
Wow, what a big colony! So the hive they split from must have been twice that size. No matter how many times I see it, I never get tired of watching "the march". Nice score Bruce.
Yes it was a very nice swarm. Checked on them yesterday and they seem to have settled in nicely!
I spray the swarm with sugar water, Than, I spray a 5 gallon bucket with sugar water. I shake the bees with 2 shakes into the bucket, I get 98 % of the bees. Cover and find them a home. They need air in the bucket. Nice catch
Interesting idea. Thanks!
I use a white sheet under the branch. Bricks on all 4 corners. Shake onto the sheet, then put box next to cluster.. Let them March. They stay when they choose to March in.
Yes seems that way. I have done some Taranov Splits with a white sheet and seen others use them for swarms. Seems to work well and I agree that it seems like they tend to stay when they march in. It also helps to put a frame of brood in the box if you have some to spare.
Great job Bruce. Your right that was a nice swarm. You got lucky to they were very gentle. That makes a beautiful experience.
Yes it does. I love it!
that is a nice bunch of bees, you will probably add the second box in short order
Maybe so. We will see!
Nothing like watching a march!!
Absolutely!
Nice swarm. . Could you have just cut the branch and shake it right at the box?
Maybe but there were a few limbs involved and is was easy to reach. So many ways to do things. 🤷♂️🙂 Went and checked on them this evening after catching another swarm on the same tree (didn’t get a video). They seemed to be settled in and working. Didn’t really go through them. Just added frames to fill up the box. Thanks for checking in!
Amazing..
Yes! That was a good day!🐝🙂
Won't be easier to put all the bees on the box and then look for the queen on the frames?
Not a bad idea. Thanks for the input!
SI seen some one the other day on a video can't remember who, to get them to go in the hive he used spray bottle with water. It worked real good.
Hmm interesting. I might need to add that to my arsenal. Thanks!
Yes I have done that as well and it does work but this technique works well too. So many ways to do things...
Yep. So many ways to do things.
Nice :)
Yes it was. Thanks!
Nice!
Thanks. Fun stuff!
Bruce, that’s a nice size swarm! I caught a few swarms 2 weeks ago and using the same techniques. With no protection I was standing on the ground and when I reached for the first pan of bees they lit me up! I got it on my hand and face and all in my hair! I had caught 2 swarms the day before the same way with no issues. Needless to say I put my veil and gloves on and finished putting the bees in the box. The only reason I can figure why they attacked me was I had just baited a swarm trap before that and I’m sure I had gotten swarm commander on my hand when I sprayed it on a Qtip. Do you think that’s why they got me?
I am really not sure. Every once in awhile you will run into a swarm that is a little testy. I usually at least start off with a veil on and add more protective gear if needed. Just more comfortable that way.
Bruce, I forgot to tell you that the attack swarm ended up having 2 queens, my first with 2.
Yes that is interesting when that happens. What do you end up doing with them? I am never really quite sure what to do when that happens.
Bruce, they resolved the issue themselves. Once I got most in the box I left it on the ground for the stragglers to go in for a couple of hours. When I went back to get them I saw another ball of them in the same place so I looked in and I could tell it wasn’t as full as I left it. I caught the ones in the tree put them in a separate container and both had queens. Just sheer luck that it went the way it did.
Don Bearden probably a good idea to leave them alone for awhile and let them work it out.
@1:55 ol girl in the background just walks outside and flops down onto a mattress in the yard. Roll Tide moment!
You’re right! She did😂😂😂. Roll Tide Roll!!!🏈🐘
Notice the shirt I am wearing lol. University of Alabama T-shirt. Roll Tide lol!!!
@@brucesbees yep. Had to jab at ya while you were in the trailer park with Roll Tide Queen on the mattress!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂 War Eagle! 🦅
Bruce, the your Highness went into the box. She often hard to spot in a swarm cause she around the size of a worker bee
If a virgin queen that is probably true. I have heard that even mated queens will trim down before swarming in order to be able to fly. Thanks for checking in!
Mi procder , es decir ? Como lo garia yo ? .
Gracias for el comento!
Dentro de la colmena NO en la puerta .
Gracias
Gotta love those low ones. Seems like Spring swarms stay lower and late Summer swarms go high. IDK just my observation.
Yes the reachable ones certainly are better and easier to catch typically!
Hundred dollars hanging in a tree sweet. That is if you bought them 100 minimum. Hope i get another colony this year that way.
I hope so too. Maybe you will!
Nice swarm catch mate yes I think your right they came from that old trailer and you gotta have the queen the way they all marched into the box , you use the same method I’ve used or I will get them too walk on a frame and then drop em into a box , just made four new swarm boxes going to get em up soon , thank you mate great catch .
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
I have been trying to stay ahead of my bees but have had so many swarms. I don’t mind them swarming once, but if they keep swarming, you end up with a small hive. Not good for honey production. Had a swarm yesterday again! Haven’t lost but 3 of them, most have been low enough to capture. Good swarm Bruce!
Yes sometimes bees can be “swarm” no matter what we do. It can be a little frustrating at times but if the donor hive survives they may become a very productive hive down the road.
Nice healthy swarm Bruce. I’ve found 3 so far this month here in central NC. Beautiful thing to see and watch. God Bless
Yes is is an awesome thing and I seemingly never get tired of it. Thanks for checking in🐝🙂
The bee march is always cool. Bonus when you find them trained like that...HA HA HA
No doubt lol. One of my favorite things in beekeeping...the march!
Great find!! That was a nice catch! 😊👏👏
Yes it was! Thanks for checking in!
I’ve seen people use a white bedsheet to shake swarms onto. Compact to store/carry, spreads out to large area & you can use it to shake them into the hive if necessary. The white contrast makes it easier to spot the queen. Haven’t tried it myself yet but seems like a good technique to me
Yes I have heard of using a sheet. Wasn’t sure why but that makes sense. Thanks!
Usually in my experience when they march in like that the Queen is already in the box
Yep I’m sure she was. Peeked in on them this evening and they were still in the box
Great catch! Have fun with them! :)
Always. Thanks!
Why didn't you cut the branch down?
That would have worked but it wasn’t my tree and not sure the owner would have scared me to cut his pecan tree. And it was kind of fun to do it the way I did. It all worked out well. Could have also bumped them into a bucket. All kinds of ways to do things. Great comment. Definitely a good idea that probably would have worked. Thanks for watching!
Bruce that was a good size swarm, I got my biggest ever last month. Good job
Yes it was fun! Congrats on the swarm!
Lindo enxame, parabéns
Gracias!
