  • I was fortunate enough to catch this nice and very large swarm of bees. I think this colony will be a great addition to my stock.

    I spray the swarm with sugar water, Than, I spray a 5 gallon bucket with sugar water. I shake the bees with 2 shakes into the bucket, I get 98 % of the bees. Cover and find them a home. They need air in the bucket. Nice catch

    We are so glad you show it all! My hubs and I felt so sorry for you when you showed that hive last year that starved out! I think we felt as bad as you did! But we all live and learn and if someone makes a mistake and we can all learn from it maybe we can save more bees! Thanks again for all you do!!

    Wow, what a big colony! So the hive they split from must have been twice that size. No matter how many times I see it, I never get tired of watching "the march". Nice score Bruce.

      Yes it was a very nice swarm. Checked on them yesterday and they seem to have settled in nicely!

    I use a white sheet under the branch. Bricks on all 4 corners. Shake onto the sheet, then put box next to cluster.. Let them March. They stay when they choose to March in.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад +1

      Yes seems that way. I have done some Taranov Splits with a white sheet and seen others use them for swarms. Seems to work well and I agree that it seems like they tend to stay when they march in. It also helps to put a frame of brood in the box if you have some to spare.

    Gotta love those low ones. Seems like Spring swarms stay lower and late Summer swarms go high. IDK just my observation.

      Yes the reachable ones certainly are better and easier to catch typically!

    Nice swarm. . Could you have just cut the branch and shake it right at the box?

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад +1

      Maybe but there were a few limbs involved and is was easy to reach. So many ways to do things. 🤷‍♂️🙂 Went and checked on them this evening after catching another swarm on the same tree (didn’t get a video). They seemed to be settled in and working. Didn’t really go through them. Just added frames to fill up the box. Thanks for checking in!

    Nice swarm catch mate yes I think your right they came from that old trailer and you gotta have the queen the way they all marched into the box , you use the same method I’ve used or I will get them too walk on a frame and then drop em into a box , just made four new swarm boxes going to get em up soon , thank you mate great catch .

    I’ve seen people use a white bedsheet to shake swarms onto. Compact to store/carry, spreads out to large area & you can use it to shake them into the hive if necessary. The white contrast makes it easier to spot the queen. Haven’t tried it myself yet but seems like a good technique to me

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад +1

      Yes I have heard of using a sheet. Wasn’t sure why but that makes sense. Thanks!

    I have been trying to stay ahead of my bees but have had so many swarms. I don’t mind them swarming once, but if they keep swarming, you end up with a small hive. Not good for honey production. Had a swarm yesterday again! Haven’t lost but 3 of them, most have been low enough to capture. Good swarm Bruce!

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад

      Yes sometimes bees can be “swarm” no matter what we do. It can be a little frustrating at times but if the donor hive survives they may become a very productive hive down the road.

      If a virgin queen that is probably true. I have heard that even mated queens will trim down before swarming in order to be able to fly. Thanks for checking in!

    Bruce, that’s a nice size swarm! I caught a few swarms 2 weeks ago and using the same techniques. With no protection I was standing on the ground and when I reached for the first pan of bees they lit me up! I got it on my hand and face and all in my hair! I had caught 2 swarms the day before the same way with no issues. Needless to say I put my veil and gloves on and finished putting the bees in the box. The only reason I can figure why they attacked me was I had just baited a swarm trap before that and I’m sure I had gotten swarm commander on my hand when I sprayed it on a Qtip. Do you think that’s why they got me?

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад +2

      I am really not sure. Every once in awhile you will run into a swarm that is a little testy. I usually at least start off with a veil on and add more protective gear if needed. Just more comfortable that way.

    • @donbearden1953
      @donbearden1953 4 года назад +1

      Bruce, I forgot to tell you that the attack swarm ended up having 2 queens, my first with 2.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад

      Yes that is interesting when that happens. What do you end up doing with them? I am never really quite sure what to do when that happens.

    • @donbearden1953
      @donbearden1953 4 года назад +1

      Bruce, they resolved the issue themselves. Once I got most in the box I left it on the ground for the stragglers to go in for a couple of hours. When I went back to get them I saw another ball of them in the same place so I looked in and I could tell it wasn’t as full as I left it. I caught the ones in the tree put them in a separate container and both had queens. Just sheer luck that it went the way it did.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад

      Don Bearden probably a good idea to leave them alone for awhile and let them work it out.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  22 дня назад

      That would have worked but it wasn’t my tree and not sure the owner would have scared me to cut his pecan tree. And it was kind of fun to do it the way I did. It all worked out well. Could have also bumped them into a bucket. All kinds of ways to do things. Great comment. Definitely a good idea that probably would have worked. Thanks for watching!
