- I caught a swarm in a swarm trap (bait hive) and thought I would show you how what I decided to do with them. It is always a lot of fun peeking in on a newly caught swarm for the first time because you never know what to expect. This was no different. Once we had the new swarm taken care of I went ahead and reset the trap. I have had a lot of success over the years using this method. Maybe it can give you some ideas that will help with your goals as well.

Caught my first swarm yesterday in South Arkansas, we were hit by the cold in February and slowed things down to a crawl for much of March. Booming now.

They probably went ahead and developed queen cells from eggs that had already hatched. So if the larvae was 4 or 5 days old when you put it in there they could have called it by now.
What do you Mark your queen with if you don't mind me asking?

I am cutting off upper corners on my plastic foundations, so bees can walk through and do better job. Also I'm putting the frames in my boxes with side edges to the entrance, so bees can come easier in, and do not have barrier of foundation's wall in front of them. I'll suggest you to do the same.

It is nice to find the queen but if you see eggs you know she is probably there someplace. Over the years I figured that the extra time it takes to find the queen just add stress to the hive (unless I need to actually do something with the queen as part of the manipulation). That is a good way to do a swarm trap, you cannot argue with success.

Nice video Bruce. Those black cloves you are using, what material are they made of, what is the thickness, where do you get them and do you ever get stung thru them.
I wear beekeeper's leather clove but they are too hard and I would like to try something else. Thanks.
They are nitrile gloves that I bought at Lowe’s and the bees rarely sting through them. I prefer the 9 mil nitrile gloves at Harbor Freight but I just ordered some “Venom Steel” 2 layer nitrile gloves from Medline. They have had them at the hospital where I work and they seem to be really tough and more comfortable. I am excited to try them. Will probably talk about them when I get them. I still occasionally wear leather beekeeping gloves but have pretty much stoked doing so. If the bees are fired up they end up full of stingers and honestly I think I get stung more through them than the nitrile gloves. I also like the dexterity of the nitrile gloves and am able to use the touch screen on my phone with them on as well. So many advantages.
I remove an established hive a month ago....it was an amazing experience.

This year is going to be crazy. All my traps have had super heavy scouting. Not sure what I'm going to do if they all catch swarms.

Thanks for showing what you do when you get bees in your swarm trap. I started beekeeping last year and I'm loving it. I'm in Western PA . I just put 2 swarm traps out yesterday and I already have bees checking both swarm traps out!! By the way, where are you located?

@@frankspataro9714 Apollo Pa . I'm just getting prepared for swarm season. I imagine bees won't be swarming just yet. But the bees were checking out both my boxes 24 hours after we put them up. Which to me is a good sign. I atleast I know that the bees have found the boxes.

I think so. I really don’t think that swarm had been in there very long. Two weeks at the most and it wasn’t a huge swarm. We are also still just beginning our flow here. The privet want be blooming for awhile yet and the biggest flow doesn’t start until mid-late May usually. Lots of thing starting to bloom though and the bees are building up.

I’m wondering, if the Queen had accidentally fallen onto the ground at transfer time would that be a problem?
As long as she finds her way into the new hive no issues. It’s always a good idea to kind of look around the hive after hive inspections or transfers to make sure everything is in order. I have seen a few queens wandering around over the years. I think if they are close to the hive they usually find their way in but I always like to walk them in if I see them. This is a very incoming occurrence but it can happen.

Hi there! Would you have been able to relocate your swarm to the closer apiary or did you take them far away for the 2 feet or 2 miles rule? Wondering if I need to use that rule for swarms too.
If I had knowingly just cough them I could have set them down right there in that beeyard but if it has been awhile I like to move them a ways away. You could set them there anyway but odds are the foragers might drift into other colonies. Of plenty of brood and nurse bees then that is really not a huge problem.

Yes they work well. I get an occasional sting. The 9 mil ones from Harbor Freight are tougher and work better than these from Lowe’s. But I just ordered a new kind from Medline called “Venom Steel.” I think they will work the best. Will try to talk about them in when I get them. They are a double layer type glove and we have been wearing them at work. They are more comfortable and seem to be pretty tough.
Hey Bruce when do you start putting out swarm traps? What month?
In this area can really start any time now but swarms really start happening mostly in March and frequency is pretty high through end of March and April and even into May. Late March, April and early May has historically been the best time to catch swarms in my experience over the past few years. But I have caught a few in February and early March.
If my bee yard is only 35 feet from where I caught my swarm should I still let them get established? How long do you suggest?
If you know when you catch them you can immediately take them to the new spot. Otherwise I would let them get established for awhile. Then move them at least 2 or 3 miles for a week or two and then back. You can move them right to your beeyard but some of the foragers will get confused and go back to the trap site. It doesn’t bother me that much. I think eventually they will find their way into a hive but no guarantees.

Yes. If that happens you should probably do an inspection and see what is going on. Sometimes hives will swarm multiple times and it can really decrease the strength of the hive.

Do you have trouble with wax moths on your comb in your swarm traps?
Not usually. I guess it would be an issue if they went a long time without catching anything. I have some that just stayed out all winter. Haven’t been in them. My guess is the wax moths have destroyed the comb and they probably have a lot of roaches in them.

That is a good question. I don’t do a lot of removals. It is basically a bee removal. Maybe you could reach out to someone like Randy McCaffrey (628Dirtrooster) for advice. I think he would answer.

I think you can find it at just about any beekeeping supply company. There are no shipping options where you live?
Would it be better to move them at night when all the foragers are in?
I moved them early in the morning when it was chilly so they were basically in the hive. Couldn’t have worked out better.

That is awesome! It is really simple and works well. If there are bees around there is a very good chance swarms can be caught

Probably somewhere around 120 to 130 or all different sizes and types.
Bruce, just went out to yard and found bees on a swarm on ground. I have caught queen and pit in another hove. What now? I have her in a queen clip
And hoping swarm follows her. Do I close it up, release her etc?
Set the hive right next to the swarm. They will go right in. Or should. It’s possible they will do on wherever you set the hive. If the queen is in there.
You can set her right in the entrance or just inside. But typically if there is a dark entrance right next to them they run right in.
can't you handle traps at night when the bees are in there and inactive?
Yes. I usually like to do it that way but in the video I explained that it was early in the morning and cool. The bees were all in the box. Perfect opportunity.
So i bought 2 nucs last spring, late summer got robbed out. Thats a sad event!

I hope so too! You never know exactly what you are going to end up with when you catch swarms but they often do very well!

where is the ventilation when you move the bees in a swarm trap so that the bees don't overheat in the sun?
I usually only move them a short distance. Never had a problem. If I were going a longer distance would figure something out.
I am hearing comments that imply that a captured swarm is by default Africanized and keeping in Africanized colony is irresponsible. They seem to imply that I should re-queen. What do you say?
I think is some areas they recommend you requeen for that very reason. It is not a problem here…yet. Beekeeping is very regional.
how far apart should you set two swarm boxes?
I don’t think it really matters that much. Would spread them out a bit cover a bigger area. I don’t hang a lot of them and they are usually quite a ways away from each other. I did have one location through where I hung two traps probably 20 or 30 yards apart and they often would both catch swarms. If there are swarming bees there is a good chance you will catch them.

There are all kinds of opinions on this. I have caught swarms in various sizes but to me an 8 frame deep box seems to work as well as any.
what are you making your lids from?
Different kinds of things. The swarm trap lid was an experiment from a friend awhile back. He just used some plywood scrap fork the family cabinet shop to make me some hives. Overall the have not held up that well though this particular one has done ok. My favorite lid material is HDO concrete firm board. It seems to last forever but it’s hard to find around here. I also have some lids that were made for me out of Advantech and some some more made out of pressure treated plywood.
If I make them myself I will more than likely use treated plywood. Though the price has gone up it is readily available and I think we can get 10 lids out of a sheet so looking at about $6/$7 per lid.

Same problem. We have a local store that sells Top Notch Orange flooring. I have several nucs built out of it. It is an Advantech type product and seems to be very good. The boxes are holding up wonderfully.
actually if you have a newer smart phone most of them have a great camera and you can zoom in with it.
Most of the time the pictures turn out better than this. I zoomed this in and it got grainy. I pretty much do everything on my iPhone XS.
My hive got loose in my isuzu trooper, how do I get them back in the box
Good question. Not sure. I would probably open up all the windows when you get to your location and set the box outside and see if the bees will go to the box, but that is an unfortunate and difficult thing to have happen. What an adventure!

At 4am this morning I went out to my trooper i had taped screen over the open windows to cool them down. There were some bees in a small cluster at the entrance so I through a fine mesh screen over the box and carried them to their new location then I put another box on top with five frames in it ,thats all the extras I had but will get more. So its just daylight now and let's see what happens.

I have never found it to be an advantage to have 4 hives onto a pallet. There is just too much bee drift and other less desireable problems. If you a migratory 'keeper, I see why you put your quads out that way-- easier to load onto a truck with a forklift. Then there is always mud and getting the lift stuck. It's no fun trying to unstuck a lift.

Thinking about doing something different now but so far this has worked ok. As I grow will probably need to upgrade. The convenience of my current setup makes me a little hesitant.
