I had such an emotional connection to this song, I literally felt it in my soul. As a musician this inspires me to be a better creator. Thank you guys for this beautiful music..
James Melton Nah I disagree, the talent is equally shared between being able to play these quick right hand riffs and writing them as the initial commenter stated, being able to formulate those melodies and embed them in multi accented rythms is remarkable.
Yojimbo711 his tone is achieved through the way he picks many players can finger the notes and not sound like him because they aren't picking like him.
I absolutely love the tone in this video. I have to say it again. To think I once hated blindly on anything EMG 81. Yet when I go back and look at all my favorite recordings, they were done with an EMG 81 or 81-7. Funny how it works being a sheep. Bought an Ibanez Iron Label 6'er last weekend. EMG 81/60, and I've never been happier with my heavy tones. I still have a strat for low gain applications that aren't cleans (the 60 has the best cleans i've ever heard. And 90% of what I do is high gain anyway. Kudos to EMG for making a pickup that whose tone I unknowingly chased for years while simultaneously jumping on the hate train. I bought Bare Knuckle BlackHawks, and Dimarzio D'activators in that time and they still never lived up.
Gnosis was an amazing album, but the two tracks I've heard from the newest album have blown most of the previous album out of the water! Can't wait to hear Chris' vocals over them too :)
Arran Cook OHHH! Yeah, I knew that one as "The Indulger" back when they were seeking a new vocalist and I'd totally forgotten about it. Oops. Totally killer track too...I cannot WAIT for the new record! Wish they'd toss us an instrumental version of Gnosis to tide us over (hint hint, Mr. Browne...) ;)
Must...Keep..PRACTICING!! Must.. Have...Same..Pick..attack! *brakes vessels*lol i feel he has a vendetta against his strings. lol but seriously though. what a monster. really dig that he tunes to open tunings.
For anyone interested he's using Laney IRT Studio Rack mount amps, his Reaper Pandemonium pedal, and a few others for tone. He also uses an older Line 6 Pod XT Pro Rack (the red one) not shown in this video.
Someone uploaded a Radio rip of this song with vocals but it got taken down and I didn't RUclips to MP3 it! Just have to stick with the instrumental, such an amazing song.
Dude, his rhythm is something else... It seems to only be natural and unique to himself (covers on RUclips just don't cut it). Plus, his right hand's accuracy, flow and feel, is just amazing to watch but, also seriously difficult and technical. I personally, wouldn't get too cut up about not perfecting his technique/songs... They truly are masterpieces of this new Djent style of guitar playing. I'm currently trying to learn: Leeloo - Veil of Maya... That is seriously a hard song to tackle and master. Check it out, if you haven't already... Anyway, hoped this helped :)
+SuperItalia494 word up man I totally agree. Yeah I started learning leeloo when it first came out but unfortunately I don't have a guitar with a whammy bar on it so I couldn't bend the harmonics. So I gave up on it haha. started working on Punisher by VOM and my skills improved a lot just by that one song.
Yeah, I have the same issue. I've got a fixed bridge so, no crazy stuff like that, for me. I still can't wrap my head around the verse riff tho, that syncopated rhythm just doesn't flow yet with me haha. I'll get out Punisher for sure tho... The ultimate song that I want to one day learn is Behold - Born Of Osiris. I can't even begin to know how to even start that one! haha
I love Djent for the rhythm but I can't wait till they start working the rhythm into other strings... I don't know if anyone else agrees with me but the rhythm is very funk so you could almost say that there will be a strong use of funk lead as djent grows
I always viewed it to be in the low strings for the sheer purpose of forming the rhythmical backbone which sounds more percussive when done in synch with the kick for example. I can see why it doesn't feel purposeful, especially with bands like Volumes who just don't seem to "get it".
What you call 'djent' I call 'progressive metal,' and I'm pretty sure what you're describing has been around for some time, it's just that you're probably new to the genre. Gravitate towards the more jazz-influenced acts. John Browne is known for his rhythmic grooves and "Milton cleans," so I wouldn't expect what you're talking about out of him. He's my favorite songwriter on Earth, but he has his own formula.
***** Damn, where the hell did you come from?? You just listed off pretty much every one of my top artists... that was kinda creepy... Except dunno about Mandroid Echostar, but based off the rest of the list I know what I need to go check out next.
totally agree,i just thought it was weird how evryone was tripping over his right hand. that is howyou have to play in metal. with power. thats what makes us so good at transitioning :))))
Yeah, when you're playing more rythmical/djenty stuff the the alternate picking technique isnt used so much. mainly because people use alot of hammer ons and pulloffs on every other string except the top one.
***** downpicking also helps accentuate certain parts, by incorporating triplets into the riff to change the groove and make it less boring. and also, totally agree with the consistency of downpicking. imagine the Master of Puppets' riff being played in alternate picking... it loses a fuckton of power! i started recording for my band earlier this month and i had to halt it because, with alternate picking, i didn't get the strong consistent attacks i wanted, so I'm practicing downstrokes like a mad man.
They did and didn't. The whole open strings thing is definitely the dj0nt stuff, but there really isn't a whole lot of 000 powerchord stuff in this song. It refers actually to a lot of the passages that sound all widdly woo, where he tends to hammer on from 0 to a fret.
Mirko Fustinoni From what I know it's always a POD, but he might actually use the Laney live for close to the stage sound, but I'm not to sure about that.
Emilio Sfeir sorry guys but thats wrong. John only uses the POD for clean sounds. The distortion sound comes from a Laney Ironheart. And in studio he is using a axe fx like everyone in this scene does !
Does anyone know what he's using for his tone (what's sitting on the Randall cabs throughout the vid) it almost looks like axe fx but I don't think it is.... Anyone know???
Upon further reflection I see that legato is just so huge in modern playing. I could never cop Holdsworth as a result of my "pick everything" motto from my heroes. I got influenced by Santana S Morse and Di Meola. I need to either rethink or just enjoy and continue flatpicking every bloody note till i croak.
+Dick Tracy by all means you can do it on a 6 string but I've never heard anything out of mine but after 5 minutes in a 7 string I could hear the strings ringing
I had such an emotional connection to this song, I literally felt it in my soul. As a musician this inspires me to be a better creator. Thank you guys for this beautiful music..
You, the Creator?????
@@beidouvirus3978 ive read the comment and this is the first thing i thought
The talent that it takes to play this is second only to the talent that it takes to write this
+Jay Ward I agree too much.
+Jay Ward Words of wisdom.
Yojimbo711 most of the talent here is in his right hand in the way he picks his riffs and chords.
This dude's right hand keeps f*cking with my emotions!
He's a machine!
Im sure his girlfriend is happy bout his right hand!
This riff hits harder than my dad
+Bjorn Bridgeman lmao
lol
:)
:(
5 years later, you still alive?
CAN'T STOP LISTENING!!!! I want this album so much!!!!
I love the chorus! It's such a rad melody and rythm.
The melodies in this are godly.
This guy and the whole band are beyond greatness. Their latest album, "The Amanuensis", is truly a masterpiece.
would like to see him and mark holcomb do something together. they are both riff machines and have a sorta similar sound.
This ^
That would actually be incredible
Aye bro you had me at Mark Holcomb
John is good buddies with the Periphery boys, I'd say it's more a matter of when than if.
I'd like to see Yvette and Mark do something
I absolutely love the tone in this video. I have to say it again. To think I once hated blindly on anything EMG 81. MORE JOHN BROWNE ON EMG TV PLEASE !
So awesome. Love John Browne's riffing, can't wait for the new album.
Gnosis was an amazing album, but the two tracks I've heard from the newest album have blown most of the previous album out of the water! Can't wait to hear Chris' vocals over them too :)
Wait...two? Where's the other one? I missed something!
I, The Creator dude!
Arran Cook
OHHH!
James Reeves What makes you say that?
Haha, I wouldn't believe anything Olly says! I've seen them play it live twice and they performed it on that live BBC Radio session they did.
Haven't anything more creative and groovy in a loooong time!! Can't wait for the new album!!
Must...Keep..PRACTICING!! Must.. Have...Same..Pick..attack! *brakes vessels*lol
i feel he has a vendetta against his strings. lol but seriously though. what a monster. really dig that he tunes to open tunings.
One of the best and musical riffs he had made
The main riff (0:37) is sooooo damn catchy... That guy makes me wanna be a better rhythm player, his technique is simply flawless.
this one is easily going to be one of my main jams this summer!
Very tight, excellent performance. That last pinch sounded great too.
For anyone interested he's using Laney IRT Studio Rack mount amps, his Reaper Pandemonium pedal, and a few others for tone. He also uses an older Line 6 Pod XT Pro Rack (the red one) not shown in this video.
Just because I know a bunch of people are going to be asking for it..
Tuning: Ab F Bb Eb F Bb Eb
that is fucked... are you the guy playing in this video?
dickyp1 no, he isn't, but John is known for using these crazy tunings. In fact, that's the tuning he uses the most
Is the F lower than the Ab?
He's a machine! LOVE his playing! Full on beast mode!
Brilliant composition and playing. WOW.
That tone is outrageous
should release an instrumental version of the album. would be so sick
Just a few hours ago I was thinking of Higgs Boson instrumental and here it is!
CAN'T FUCKING WAIT! Release this shit now!
To this day probably the best usage and playability on at 7 string
Absolutely incredible!
I can't stop watching this.
this is so much fun to play! Well, at least the first 30 seconds I managed to cover haha not giving up on this still!
Fucking incredible harmonies and intervals here man. I love you.
God damn, sick playing. thats one heavy and groovy ass song.
Someone uploaded a Radio rip of this song with vocals but it got taken down and I didn't RUclips to MP3 it! Just have to stick with the instrumental, such an amazing song.
Jose Macario for some 8 string demos!
Yes. That man is something else.
love the funk groove that this song carries. wonder how much different it will sound with some vox
I tried learning this when this video first came out, failed miserably. Came back two years later and still cant wrap my head around this shit
Dude, his rhythm is something else... It seems to only be natural and unique to himself (covers on RUclips just don't cut it). Plus, his right hand's accuracy, flow and feel, is just amazing to watch but, also seriously difficult and technical.

Ex-Higgs-Boson? Awesome! Can't wait to hear the vocals and the rest of the album!
Because John Browne.

I'll have a look when I can Nick thanks :)

im excited to hear chris barretto again. i remember listening to him with periphery before their album actually came out
has a periphery vibe to it, maybe more like mark holcomb
anyway i love it
i love this music.
John Browne the light in a dark universe..........superb
Jose Macario for EMG demo!! This is rad too.
So underrated that guy
This is not even his final form. Browne a beast
Dat robotic right hand! John is incredible!!!!! \m/
Cloud Atlas themed album with a pic of Tom Hanks on the album cover?
He plays with a lot of power in his right hand, its like hes trying to break his strings!
Thats how you get a good sounding pick attack and its important for metal even with active pickups. If you don't pick heavy the sound is not heavy.
totally agree,i just thought it was weird how evryone was tripping over his right hand. that is howyou have to play in metal. with power. thats what makes us so good at transitioning :))))
He also mostly seems to downpick everything instead of alternate pick. I think that also helps.
Yeah, when you're playing more rythmical/djenty stuff the the alternate picking technique isnt used so much. mainly because people use alot of hammer ons and pulloffs on every other string except the top one.

Please give us a play-through by Jose Macario
Damn. Thats tight as hell. Anybody know when the new album is supposed to be released?
it seems they focus on a lot of complexity within the rhythm itself, and its just amazing.... :']
Representing that Ironheart IRT pretty well, I think! That's truly a twice as nice at half the price line from Laney.
Sounds like Keith Merrow, excellent rhythm playing combined with killer riffs
Didn't know that Robert Baratheon plays guitar :D
Christ! I love love that right hand!
Someone knows what model is that nice Ibanez?
tasty sound every single time... which ibanez model is that though?
Epic!
Give to this guy a giant cookie!
Relentlessly diabolic. The right hand that made Hetfield shy away for fear his may fall off.
What Ibanez model is he using?
Man thats something else!
Did emg poke fun at djent in the description? Great song and incredible picking hand
They did and didn't. The whole open strings thing is definitely the dj0nt stuff, but there really isn't a whole lot of 000 powerchord stuff in this song. It refers actually to a lot of the passages that sound all widdly woo, where he tends to hammer on from 0 to a fret.
One of the best guitar sound i've ever heard in the so called "djent scene"...and it comes all from an amp!!
the Laney is a dummy amp, the real tone comes from a POD XT, John himself said that
Emilio Sfeir What Emilio said, the Laney is a dummy and the real tone is coming from a POD XT
Does he always use the POD or is it just in this video?
Mirko Fustinoni From what I know it's always a POD, but he might actually use the Laney live for close to the stage sound, but I'm not to sure about that.
Emilio Sfeir sorry guys but thats wrong.
John only uses the POD for clean sounds.
The distortion sound comes from a Laney Ironheart.
And in studio he is using a axe fx like everyone in this scene does !
best yet JB
sweet guitar. really liked the abalone shark tooth inlays.
Does this characteristic "dry" sound comes from Randall?
Man I need to get a 7 string.
amazing!
Can I use EMG 707 on Bridge and 81-7 on Neck?
What pickups does he use I wonder
Awesome.
Does anyone know what he's using for his tone (what's sitting on the Randall cabs throughout the vid) it almost looks like axe fx but I don't think it is.... Anyone know???
It's the Laney IRT 15W Studio :) It's a beast !!
Video shows a Laney IRT Studio but in reality he uses a POD XT, he's even said it himself.
Mason Stanley He used a Pod XT Pro on the album, but I know on tour he's been using real amps, and a Pod HD Pro.
Boo Koo I saw a POD XT on the Abstract Reality tour livestream, but there was also a boogie.
Mason Stanley Naw, he used a Dual Rec and a Mark V for distorted (because Olly is stuck in Canada), and a POD HD for cleans.
is that a 27" scale Ibanez 7 string?
I want.. I NEED!
i am wondering what would Paul Gilbert say on these riffs.
After take care of the island for many years, Hurley decided to make metal. \m/
Good to know I'm not the only guitar player that bites his nails
The Best Of Djent!
Dude is a beast
that's why I want to live
So I guess that Strandberg is just there for decoration?
Godlike
bruuuu that guitar sounds amazing
Inspirador!!!!!!!!!!
would love the tabs for this D:
Awsome! Got goose bumps from here 0:37 :D
Monuments and Periphery sound really similar and I love it.
Who else here 2021
nice john!
anyone know the song in the intro?
bharathkumar bharathkumar Same song.
Greatness
🔥🔥🔥🔥
This song is f*ck*ng great!
On fire
What guitar is that?
custom ibanez rg i think
“What’s alternate picking?”
who needs solo when you can have this
Upon further reflection I see that legato is just so huge in modern playing. I could never cop Holdsworth as a result of my "pick everything" motto from my heroes. I got influenced by Santana S Morse and Di Meola. I need to either rethink or just enjoy and continue flatpicking every bloody note till i croak.
Yes, his picking technique is giving me a mild heart attack.
What is the collar thing at the head of his guitar? What's it called/what's it do
+Dick Tracy 7 strings tend to have a problem with the strings behind the nut ringing out and coming through the pickups. The strap stops this.
Is it only 7 strings or would this be beneficial for a 6 string as well
+Dick Tracy by all means you can do it on a 6 string but I've never heard anything out of mine but after 5 minutes in a 7 string I could hear the strings ringing
+Dick Tracy From my experience it does happen on both but its much more noticeable on a 7.
I came to see some inhuman down picking. I was not disappointed.
Dude what a punch!
