  • In this video, we remember Tom Dunphy from Waterford of The Royal Showband and Big 8, who was killed in a car crash on July 29th, 1975 near Drumsna Co Leitrim.
I presented two showband documentaries in December 2020, and part of this new recording is from the second of those shows and includes new footage from Fr Brian D'Arcy, Michael Commins, and the late Brendan Bowyer who all attended a special anniversary for Tom in Annaduff and Drumshanbo in 2015.
I also want to remember Des Shanley (R.I.P) who attended to the upkeep of the Monument which was erected in memory of Tom, close to where the accident happened, Des sadly passed away earlier in 2021, a man who did everything to keep the memory of Tom Dunphy alive, my condolences to his family and friends.
Des and I had spoken about working on this video before his death to mark Tom's anniversary and it was Des who was able to provide me with some of the footage used to make this video.
I claim no ownership over the music used and the footage used was with permission from its owner.

Beautiful tribute to Tom Mike. God rest Tom Brendan and all deceased members of the Royal and Big 8 bands and indeed all the showband fraternity who have passed on. Many's the enjoyable night they gave us. Ni beidh a leitheid aris ann.

I'm absolutely delighted that you have gone to the trouble of posting this lovely tribute to Tom Dunphy, Mike. I visited the site of the memorial the other night to say a few little prayers and in doing so, remembered that awful week in July 1975 when Tom died so tragically, just two days before three members of the Miami Showband were brutally killed near Bangor. It is so sad to think that Des Shanley who cared so lovingly for Tom's monument over a period of nearly forty years, has also gone to his eternal reward.
In mentioning these people, I hope nobody will mind if I also mention Brendan Bowyer, Michael Coppinger (the leader of the Royal Showband), Gerdi Mackey (aka Dale Haze of The Champions), Chuck Owens and Brian Coll, all stalwarts of the showband scene, who all died within the very recent past. Ar dheis Dé go raibh siad go léir.
    Thaks again, Mike!
