This was my favorite record for me and for all sorts of reasons, I felt it was an immediate hit after we recorded it at EMI Records in London. The A&R man in the studio left me do my thing on it and I was able to produce a sound that I could never remotely replicate on stage.Tom did a wonderful job on it.
Tom is burried near where my parents are laid in peace in Tramore. He was a big star around Waterford in his day but it never changed him. He was a gent.
R.I.P. Tom...I remember that dark night in 1975. Killed in a tragic accident on his way to play at a festival dance in County Donegal. In those days Tom and the Big 8 Showband would attract crowds of well over 3000..
Carolyn Dunphy Hi Carolyn, your dads version has stood the test of time - I remember him on each anniversary, I was 13 at the time of his death, this song was always played in my home when I was a child - can't believe its coming 40 years next July - May he rest in peace
+Carolyn Dunphy I remember this song so well! - it brings me back to the mid-sixties when I was about 15 years old and starting to get interested in lads and showbands and the top ten and all the exciting times that were ahead of me in my teens. Wonderful memories. RIP Tom, - gone too soon. Thank you Carolyn.
Great song. Royal Showband are excellent band (I may be a little biased as I am a blues/country/rock singer from Waterford and Brendan, Tom and all the best opened the doors for music in South East Ireland).
i LOVE this song, i remember listening to this song when i was a very young kid living and growing up in County Meath during the early 1970's, it also was an inspiration for me to play the Guitar too :)
Fantastic song, sung very well, guitar intro memorable,I used to watch you Jim playing your Strat on many occasions at the Brandon Ballroom and I learned most of the cords I know from you.I have the old American sunburst Strat its motoring very well tg.I hope you are still giving enjoyment to people like me.Ger.Tralee Co Kerry Ireland.

@clareman21 We're all used to Gene's version : that said, there seem to be more interesting modulations in Pitney's version (+ I'm Irish!) . Love this version as well.
I listened to the original by Tom Dunphy, the Jimmy Buckley version, and Gene Pitney's rendition and ........ the winner is Daniel O'Donnell. Unfortuneately his performance isn't available here, if it is I can't find it.

This Russell & Medley composed song (sung by Pitney) was more melodic than Tom Dunphy's version, although he sang a good version. Like all songs, it's up to the listener in the final analysis. I like Gene Pitney's version better. Rest in peace Gene.

Your dad was the nicest human being you could ever meet and his version of this song is the best ever.
Tom Dunphy. 'If I diden't have a dime' one of the all time Classic Irish releases. Iconic
Those were times of peace and happiness. There was hope and prosperity in the world then and God was with us.Sadly those times are gone forever.
Great song. Royal Showband are excellent band (I may be a little biased as I am a blues/country/rock singer from Waterford and Brendan, Tom and all the best opened the doors for music in South East Ireland).

Wonderful recording for its time. Very professional and of course Tom's voice was superb . In my view a much better recording than Gene Pitney's.

here was a talent gone to soon
An innocent time compared to today's social cesspit and hedonistic decadence. Then, that's progress, eh?
Tell that to all the children viciously abused in various institutions across Ireland in the sixties.

Mi duda está entonces. ¿ quien de los cuatro personajes ,que menciona usted , fuel el que la graba por primera vez ?
Agreed!!
It was a toss up between Tom Dunphy and Gene Pitney's version of this track for my jukebox. Tom wins it by miles.
You are right
I agree entirely. Better version by far.
What a great version and so much like Gene Pitney's original, love it.
Only a lot better in my view
Creo que nunca había escuchado esta versión... pero es muy muy buena. *****
I absolutely love this song. can anyone help me get a copy of the Albert Hammond version please 🤓
😢😢
Ye can hear ye olde cultchi accent there!
Ha!
¿De qué año es?

Ah, well , sure don’t worry you’ll probably meet him in purgatory. That’s if you’re a Roman Catholic .....🥴
