Very interesting. I play music, and LISTEN to it. I’m not a background music listener. I think that’s why I play mostly analog. I play vinyl. If I’m in a lazy mood, I stream. It relaxes me. I tend to become more physically. In another life I was usually under a fear amount of stress. Believe me, music helps tremendously. Great video.

the same with me and with the age more heavy music makes me electric and anxious ,as the blood preassure also rises ,i had the other day to stop listening Kill´em´all because instead of relaxed i was already putting my guitar amplifier from peavey to work with a metal charger 80´s pedal and my esp guitar, stratocaster type

So intensely true. Thank you, Jonathan. To go further, to listen closely to great pieces of music let us access to a forth dimension shared creative territory between us and the artist, say J.S. Bach, say Louis Armstrong and so many others, just in the same way it's happening when we read great litterature, say J.M-G Le Clezio, Wladimir Volkov, and so many others. Thanks again for your engagement and amazing achievements. Kind Regards.

Such a great video. This perfectly explains why getting lost in the physical act of listening, feels like a breath of fresh air mentally. In that, the ceremony of preparing, warming tubes, cleaning records, preparing a libation of choice and viewing the beauty of the products delivering the sound, also matters so much. We must reignite the quest for Quality.

Hi Oswald. I very much look forward to the future videos on this discussion. You definitely have my attention, sir. Well actually. You’ve had my attention starting from Pt.1.
Thank you for your meaningful contribution to why we listen and should listen to music. ❤

Maybe a useful analogy to explore here is one with consuming food. Aspects of ingredient quality, preparation, flavor, hunger, satiety, and food’s linkage to health all seem to apply to music listening. Poking further at the analogy yields things like listening : muzak :: eating : fast-food.

Music is like food, you need to be careful what are your putting in your body. One advice from you I follow was to use big speakers to not just listen but feel it in my body. Thanks for all the good advice you always share with us. Cheers from Fla.

I have this great idea Jonathan. I will have my doctor prescribe your equipment for the sake of my health and well being. But I do follow your reasoning. Music is good for the soul and resonates there and I can reach the musical lines and energy better when I use my audio gear. This is actually a thing I don’t talk that much about because it belongs to my personal experience. Good to hear that this could or might scientifically be explained.
And music did become a consumer thing and therefore less special then when I was a kid. We listened to the top40 and hitparade on the radio and went to a record store to listen to a full album to decide to buy it.

The word entertainment can be broken down as follows. Enter (to go in), Tain (to hold) , ment ( mind). It literally means to go in and hold your mind. Music speaks to the soul, for me it's almost a form of meditation when I listen to the classics through my audio system. Especially when the loudspeakers, your point of source disappear in the soundstage.

Yep, hearing and listening are very different things.
Hearing controlled, unrestricted bass energy was one of the most striking audio experiences of my life.

I very much appreciated your presentation. Vibration is the central phenomenon of life...."in the beginning was the word"....Entrainment is when sympathetic resonance occurs and is the core of how natural systems communicate and transfer energy and information. Not only does sound enter our nervous system vi the ear and the brain, but our whole body experiences the vibrations. As you say yogic breathing modulates our mind and body state, but also the practice of mantras sends deep vibrations throughout our mind/body complex. Certainly music as entertainment and diversion has mixed blessings, but entrained listening is a whole other level and I'm pleased you've raised this profound quality of sound and music. Thank you.

Active listening simply means listening as the primary activity, and it's an important skill to develop.
Rather than using music as the background for another activity, try listening without doing anything else. This requires time, quiet, and focus, which are skills you need for your own production work anyway. A good way to start is by just putting on some music and then turning your attention to it entirely. If you're listening at your computer, close any open applications (and, ideally, your eyes as well). At this point, you're not trying to listen with a particular focus, but rather a general one. If you can concentrate and avoid distraction, you'll be amazed by how much more you hear than in a passive listening state.
The next step in active listening is to start trying to deconstruct what's happening in the music you're listening to. Here are some tips for doing this:

I have from day one tried to have the very best audio system I could afford. The system to me is like an instrument for music playback. The better the instrument the better sounding the music and the better the experience.

i once almost got the sound system from a old cnema building ,because they were going to kind of restore it and when asked if i wanted to see the sound system i could go and take a look ,it was kind of ,never had seen such a thing but since very young the cinema was my go to place in sunday afternoons ,i saw the ratle & Hum from U2 in 87 maybe and i was waiting for a bad sound ,not bad but loud and not that good ,well i was amazed that´s when i wanted it ,they told me they were going to do many things but none was done, that´s when i asked ,if i could disassemble it and take it home,"yes for sure" but only in 3 days ,when already having taken out the several speakers that weren´t that strange i notice the building it self was made for the sound to be released like the walls made part of it this a very high building with 3 old wooden floors for people to watch movies even had in the first floor cabins for 5 people with room in the start of the first floor with well made wood work, the amp. was from the U.S.A. also the speakers and when all was taken out ,a guy appears and tells me, i give you 10.000€ for all and needing the money and the system being working but needing a well made restoration that would cost a lot of money i said yes ,and he took it, today i´m always thinking of that ,i shouldn´t had sold it, this in 91,so the exchange i made it directelly but at the time what today is 10.000€ you could by 5 times or more it´s value like buy a new house ,a new car ,a new wife, etc. but only restored my family house that was ok but not looking new, that were my goals, some parts of your sound system are similar to what i sold but entirelly diferent ,it was from late 40´s ,this in a very tall building having along the interior highest walls cut´s to let the sound come out, this from bottom to the top and several art work with muses with camera´s on their hands also theatre old related figures from the romans and greeks, a gypsy once made a mark on the screen which was like four floors weight and he was helping the good guy because the bad guys were beating him, this in a western movie from the 50´s,that was always there for decades in the screen ,gigantic one

You are one very intelligent outthere fellow. Your design work is next level Jonathan. That system behind you would sound amazing I'm sure. I've always been a massive music listener and audiophile. That makes it hard to listen to terrible sound quality even if I love the song playing out and about in the wild.

A perhaps connected aspect is how much energy is used by the brain while listening. And where in the brain. If you are trying to listen to some orchestral performance over the speakers in some phone, your brain has to work very hard to reconstruct the original sound. As compared to the brain being able to relax when it is receiving a very accurate reproduction of it. Just like a computer when processing a compressed file like an mp3 compared to a bit stream.

There is a substantial community that believes the pyramids were in some way "built" using sound and ,of course , there's the whole " walls of Jericho " thing which is yet not really understood or much accepted , so I agree that sound (music) must certainly effect our bodies /health / and psyche . I've long been profoundly effected by quality and almost spiritual listening ,and have intuitively felt something important was going on ,as I've done it , but this is the first time I have heard anyone expound on this subject and you've opened a door for further and serious consideration on my part . Didn't Tesla delve somewhat into this idea ? the whole vibrations thing ? For me this begins to link up with my subjective experience ... I'll be thinking a whole lot more about this ... and I think this somewhat explains my 50 years + of building, and my fascination with audio horns ... Thanks

No doubt that music has mental and physical health benefits. The fact is the benefits showed up on cheap low quality gear. The studies did not test if a high quality system increases these benefits. My POV is that for me it does but you can also make the case for some it might not. I do not see the connection between the accuracy of sound reproduction and the amount of the health benefits clearly. But great video!!! Thank you.
