When I started coin collecting, I had a two-cent piece that was different from the other two cent pieces that the guys in the club had. There were two guys and charge of the group then it were longtime collectors. One of the guys offered me $30 for my $0.02 piece. That time in 1979 $30 was a lot of money to a kid just out of high school with newborn son. Fortunately for me the other guy that was in charge of the club said that if that was a coin he thought it was it was a lot more valuable than $30 and he wouldn't allow him to make that deal with me. Turned out my coin is actually very valuable and rare. Thank goodness someone stood up to someone that was willing to take advantage of the beginner
@@kamoroso94 on the back of it the eagle is holding arrows in its hand. The cheaper one of the tool is holding eight arrows, four in each claw and the one that I have is holding 13 arrows representing the original 13 colonies. They made about 1000 of them 20 years ago. It was worth about $2500. But I’m not sure what it’s worth now I haven’t checked that stuff out. I’ve been really cool they’re actually about the sized of the half dollar.
I see you, MTG! lol My mother got me into coin collecting when I was young and in my mid-20's my collection was stolen and I gave up. I'm almost 50 now and giving it another go, because I've never really lost my interest. There's a lot of very cool history in coins. Thanks for your videos!
May have been able to claim a homeowners insurance claim and get back maybe a few thousand? I’m just starting to really considering getting into it. Idk how you should start organizing to streamline? By type and years? Look for known errors that way? What about new errors discovered? Do you have to go back and review all your coins? Should you waste time trying to discover new unknown errors? So many opportunities I’d be worried I missed. I’ve been burned before for thousands selling an object so.. 😄
@chaddsteinberg3758 I'd say the higher value errors are fairly well known. You just need a list of dates and types of whatever series you want to collect. And you can catalog them however you like. By dates, years, countries, errors, or all the above..you'll find a system that works for you. And even though I've gone through my collection many times, I found a Franklin Bugs Bunny half in an old mint set. Also a 1962 "hanging 2" Canadian penny. Sometimes you don't see something until your looking for it specifically.
I just started coin collecting yesterday afternoon and hopefully this will be the video that teaches me what I can’t seem to figure out when I watch all the other videos because the terminology is just so far over my hands right now.
I’m hooked. I refuse to spend any change I get before looking at them. This isn’t good because I’m saving too many ! How do you decide what to keep and I mean in hope of resealing for a profit or gain ? I need advice before I’m consumed in coinage !
You can tell if pennies are pre 1982 by doing a drop test, the pre 1982 ones have a higher ringing sound while the post 1982 ones will sound sort of like a low pitched clunk
Okay. Great video and you seem to know your stuff. I don’t want to get that “involved”. I just want to know if the change I got from the store is potentially worth more then face value. Like a quick guide. And I’m speaking in terms of::: I got .35 cents in change, 3 dimes 1 nickel, are any of the 4 coins worth even 1¢ more then it’s face value! How do I find this out?
Did you mean: i have a roll of new coins that i finally got excited to open that were 1998 d pennies. i looked at all of them on my microscope and wow was i surprised at what i found! they were almost all a woody finish in different directions. they are almost all ddo +ddr. they are off-center some and they are dd on liberty, in god we trust, the face, all the writing on the back almost, the building and the windows. they all have a cam. i was wondering how much they would be worth?
Can I ask you a question....I received a strange coin from my grandfather. It is a 20 cent piece (made sometime between 1875-88). It does have an S above the Y in Twenty on the back. What's strange, is that there seem to be something like Native American markings on the front of the coin - and it must've been worn as a broach, as it has the side brackets. Have you heard of anything like this?
Thank you for the video I would like to start collecting coins but I am not sure if I should collect all coins or just start with one type example quarters any advice on this thank you very many
Hey, just out of curiosity, I hear that cleaning coins ruins their value.... so if i am to store special coins away, how would i remove oils from my fingers and countless others before storing it in that cardboard thingy WITHOUT killing its value?
Ive been collecting for almost twenty years. I always tell newbies that collecting coins is not about getting rich , it's about the love of collecting. I also tell people that you don't have to be rich to collect coins I'm far from Rich and over the last 20 years I've amassed a very impressive collection with some very valuable coins. When I say valuable that can sometimes mean valuable as in money but most the time I mean valuable to me. As an example I love halftimes and they're not worth much money but they're valuable to me and I also love ancient coins from the Roman era and they are extremely cheap but they're so cool so my advice to any new collector would be have fun and whatever you do no matter what never clean your coins.
My grandpa was sad when my older brother showed no interest in coins and was thrilled when he learned me and my sister liked collecting so far my oldest coin is a penny from 1961
I used to love how they looked when I was younger and I would collect those that were randomly found around the house and sometimes buy them, but I kept losing them because instead of putting them somewhere safe I loved them so much that I always had them with me so I would often lose them, now I only have 2 left! One of them is the British 10 pence, which I’m proud of because i live in the Middle East and the UK is very far away! The other one I have is my favorite it’s a 2000 irani riyal coin, which is a bit bigger than the British one and way more beautiful and detailed.
Loved the video, but as a quick note to beginners: not every coin with a low montage will become a key or semi-key date. It all depends on how many were preserved. For example, many Carson City Morgan dollars aren’t very hard to find, despite the mintages being low. In contrast, some Morgan dollars from other mints are harder to find, despite the fact that more were made.
Great video even for the long term collector. Glad you mentioned your other videos and that coin communities like yours exists.. You are a great resource to us all. Thanks for putting the time into making this video.

I just want to collect old coins i dont care about how rare they are
What or should I say where is a good online place to buy rolls and or bags/ boxes of coins? I have a credit union and they only take change through the kiosk. They no longer give out coin rolls unless for a business
That's unfortunate - I have always gone through a local bank.
I have 1.35$ in non duplicate coins
Saw a 1723 coin today at a flea market going for $100, I have no idea where it was from because it was so damaged but it’s the oldest coin I’ve ever seen
Interesting! There can be some better prices for a 1600 copper coin, though, so don't necessarily buy it at $100!
Good video. It helped me a bunch :)
