@@TuomioK I will explain to you like you are five, dont worry since it seems you either didnt watch the races or you dont understand formula 1. "how the f" LOL. Russell got helped by SC's/VSC's after trailing Hamilton all race in Australia, Miami and Zandvoort. Lewis dnf'ing while ahead of him in Abu Dhabi, Magnussen fucking Hamilton in Spain when only Max was faster than him that race and in Brazil Verstappen fucking him and his car, losing 0.2s a lap in damage. And still finishing super close. The experiments until Canada, which when stopped literally led to Russell being smacked in quali (almost as far as Norris in the shit Mclaren since that GP in % of time lost). Sainz was ahead of Leclerc in points in 2021 as well, we saw who is who again this year, but it seems you dont apply that logic to your comment
No, that's a joke. Lewis was screwed over in the first half of the season by unlucky safety cars and being the Guinea Pig for his team by having a heavier car and using experimental setups and he still performed well. Once those restrictions were gone, he came out blazing with that horrible car and did fantastic. Don't be a Hamilton hater, he did a fantastic job with the amount of B.S he went through this season.
Kalle getting a mention is well-deserved! Every rally he's just been on it, such a cool, calm, collected bloke. Hope to see him smash it next year too!
I'm so happy Kalle got a mention, it's such a shame the WRC goes so under the radar, there's been so much talent in that series that never even get's brought up because it's not formula 1 or on a circuit
I feel the ratings were pretty accurate overall. I'd have Russell as an A- for his consistency & his brilliant weekend in Brazil, but it's a negligeable difference. Also, love the shoutout to Doriane Pin, this girl is a future 24h of Le Mans winner, imo. Very fast, very talented & only 18 years old. That Iron Dames project was already fairly strong, but she was massive for them.
@@helixyt5792 Lewis struggled a bit early on, but really picked it up after a few races & could have won a couple of races. Plus he didn't make as many mistakes as Charles.
I wouldn’t say his weekend was brilliant though. He definitely drove a very good race, but beached it and red flagged qualifying which might’ve been the only reason he got that win in the first place, considering Checo and Lewis were looking very fast and didn’t get laps in and Leclerc was on inters.
Max was so far above the rest this season. -148 points ahead of his teammate almost single handedly getting more points then the 2 mercs -Absolutely dominating in spa while starting 14th -Putting in a 26 second gap in 28 laps at Suzuka in the wet -Finishing first in Hungary after starting 10th -Finishing first after a terrible 13 second pitstop in cota. -Dominating Leclerc in Imola and Monza. -Winning a record breaking 15 races in a season.
I wonder if Alpine's engine are little bit more reliable, how close would Alonso to Norris in standing or even can he be above Lando? Both of them perform briliant this year and only limited by machinery underneath them
George translating his shitbox hauling ability from Williams to Merc and carrying that car to the top 5 in the first 9 races is, to me, the performance of the year. I'm a Lando fan, and he couldn't do it with the MCL, while George single handedly kept them above water until Lewis got his footing. I think he deserves a full A.
I agree with all expect i'd probably bump Max up to A+, and LeClerc to an A. They both were so much quicker than the field (including team-mates) at most tracks. The only other one is, as much as I love old Danny Ric, C is just too high. He was dismal all year and I think i'd have to give a straight D.
Yeah, Kalle has definetely had a phenomenal year. But I want to give a shout out to Johan Kristoffersson. He has won world rallycross championship with 8 wins out of 10 races and on his way to win Extreme E championship.
his teammate Mikaela Ahlin-Kottulinsky also deserves a mention, she was a head above the rest of the female drivers in the field, mixing it up there with the guys.
Thank you for Doriane, Shane, Felipe, and Kimi ! You are so right to talk about them, especially for Doriane who diserves way better, maybe even a seat in the W Series !!! Thanks so much for your sharp and keen eye ! From a random french dude : you rock and I like your vibe ! Cheers mate !
I was actually really getting into that intro with driver of the year from other catergories! I'd love to see videos branching out from F1 to showcase some other great racing series out there tbh!
Couldn't agree more about Zhou. He's not going to set the world on fire, but he's not as bad as a lot of people thought he might be, and I'm particularly impressed by just how few mistakes he made. Solid middle-of-the-road driver.
2:16 I was so hoping for him, especially since you haven't mentioned him prior. He had such a dominant drive this year. This was my first year following WRC but damn that kid has got skills.
I'm still never going to forget that silverstone race. Turning up, getting very little sleep, BUYING ALPHATAURI MERCH. And then sitting down, the hype growing for the race. Me and me only hoping for a double AT points finish...aaaaannnndddd then Yuki punts gaslyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy out of the way. Colossal sadge. And also, keep up the fantastic content fren!
Even with all the controversy, he said she said, and just plain hate he gets, it’s hard to disagree with the fact Max’s season was the definition of dominant.
I love Bottas, and I’m happy to see that he manage to deliver even when the car he got this year. I look forward his next few? seasons at the sport. Truly hope gets a better shot at a top team. He very much deserves that, and I think most of us want to see him, at least, in the podium some time soon.
There are some curious similarity between Kalle Rovanperä and Max Verstappen. Both destroyed the competition in their respective categories this year, both are very young, and both were coached and nurtured by their respective fathers, who raced in the same category as they do now around the same time in the past, but neither one was particularly successful. This season alone, Max and Kalle performed infinitely better than Jos and Harri could have ever dreamed for their entire careers, but if it wasn't for them dedicating massively for their son's careers, neither one would have achieved anything as amazing as they did this year.
Man, looking back at 2021, that season was so fucking good. Holy shit. Fuck the controversies, fuck all that bullshit, what a SHOW. What a time to be an F1 fan.
Hey Josh.... love your vids.... hope you don't mind if I make one little request for future "driver ratings" vids?.... can you *say* the grade you give for each driver, rather than only putting it on the screen? I realise the content of what you say is the most important bit, but it's almost because of that that I'll often put your vids on while doing something else (often cooking!). Usually that's totally fine as your vids are basically interesting audio commentary with the video just being 'background', so my eyes can be elsewhere most the time. But it's just really frustrating in the rating vids that I miss most the grades because I look away for a moment and you're on to the next driver. Sorry... I know it's such a trivial thing, but it's (hopefully) a pretty easy change if you fancy it? All the best & keep up the amazing work!
Kevin Estre deserves a mention too imo Not his best year but once again best GTE driver of the year and 2nd best GT driver behind Marciello this Time . These two definitely deserve a video cuz they are just class
@@EmeteCT i mean don't get me wrong i do rate Pier Guidi but for me there's still a Gap between him and Estre . I appreciate how Josh does point out that Mick's first half of the season wasn't good at all, but the second half his performance was at least good enough for him to keep the seat. For me, I think it didn't really mattered if he got a podium, the relationship between Mick and Haas was already broken and it wasn't just one thing that was reason why he was fired. it actually was a combination of several factors, but then some people start to compare Mick to Latifi or say that he only had his seat because of his name, when in fact the one thing that probably risk his job the most was that same last name. I'm sure Nico will be able to perform, but Haas really needs to step up their game next year as all along we keep blaming the drivers, but maybe if next year that they'll actually have a good budget and a soli pair of drivers. If they don't deliver, then maybe we ought to look at Guenther's part of the blame.
Even in year 1 Haas clearly preferred Mazepin over Mick in everything. I hope Haas gets its F1 license revoked as it isn't any better than Andrea Moda.
@@anameyoucantremember he is tho, we saw his pace in the second half of the season, he beat kmag H2H in races and race pace, he is good, the only problem is him being crash prone, which was getting better by the second half too He just needed one more year, and I'm pretty sure he would prove us his worth, he was getting so much better compared to the first half it's crazy, I wish we could see what he would've done in his third year
You gave Lewis A- ... He was slow in the beginning and then made mistakes (Alonso crash, Abu Dhabi). He's not more than a B+ for the whole year. You cannot forget the first half. being a C at most Russel - new in the team, super consistent not counting Singapore. Took an impressive win , sprint win and a pole. He deserves an A-
I think you should also mention him sacrificing his performances for the teams development. Running different floors and parts along with ridiculous setups like in Jeddah. What more do you expect? Since they stopped doing the testing on Lewis’ car around canada he’s been quite clearly quicker than George. You say he made mistakes but so did George. Brazil, Silverstone, COTA. George has been in contention for the win once this season, Brazil. Lewis has been in contention atleast 3 times. Not to mention if he didn’t have the drs issue in Hungary he’d have taken pole, not George.
@@NerdChannelBrasil or y’all just hate Lewis and ignore the evidence that he was running tests so you can supply your hate boners for him, which is it?
I feel like the rating for Zhou was about right but, some key points were missed such as the big old crash in silverstone, some poor strat ideas by sauber and it was painful to watch latifi squeeze him into the wall at Singapore though he probably wouldn’t have finished in the points anyway. All that aside I do hope that with this season of learning he can be more consistent with finishes in and close to the points
I think a lot of people seem to forget that this is Russell’s first year with Mercedes while Lewis has been there for almost 10 years. So even though Lewis was faster in the second half, I think Russel has been more impressive
Russell's first year with the team, but Russell's 3rd year in F1. To go from Williams to Merc is a dream and you would expect him to perform well after that. But also consider that Lewis is only 3 years younger than Alonso. You would expect a young generational talent, such as what George has been called to be destroying an "old driver" like Lewis but he isn't. How is THAT not impressive?
Also think that Russel did better than Lewis. Saying the younger driver should outperform the older driver is just wrong. Look at Vettel or Alonso. Vettel was doing good and Alonso was one of the best drivers on the grid this year. Age is pretty much a non factor. Lewis was just not able to adapt to the truck they were driving at the start.
Even though The Nudist wasn't stellar through out the season, he basically single-handedly gave Alfa Romeo the sixth position in manufacturers championship. He brought in 89% (49/55) of the team points. Beating the German retiree and Sir Lancelot.
So George got more points, poles and wins than LH and he still gets a lower rating. What does a guy have to do? Plus LH has been at that team almost a decade more than George and no one would dispute that Mercedes is LHs team. Shocking.
I had an idea: top 20 drivers in motorsport this year, but only two drivers from a series are allopwed (for instance Verstappen and Leclerc from f1, rovenpera and evans from wrc, and it doesnt obviously have to be the top 2 in the championship)

Why tf everyone says that Russel didn't perform as well as Hamilton? Overall he beat him - not only in the standings, but generally in basically every single measure.
I'm a huge Lewis Hamilton fan. That said, I'd have a hard time giving him a higher ranking for the season than his teammate George Russell. I'd say in the end, taking the entire season in to account, they were both B+.
The "Junior" at Sainz's introduction made me crack up way more then it should have. Great reference, and a great video. I can't help but agree with, pretty much all of your rankings, as much as it pains me for some of them
I'd say Ross Chastain should get an honorable mention. Not the best driver of the year I'd admit, but the fact that he rode the wall and made it work and gave NASCAR its most viewed moment ever, I'd say he deserves a mention. He is at least the fastest Florida Man in history.
If Lewis is A- George is an A … same as Charles A and Max set records had one of the greatest seasons on Track ever if he doesnt get an A+ who would ever get it
i really didnt get the B+ on Russel when he finished ahead of Hamilton, was one of the most consistent drivers on the grid, his own calls gave the team more points... WTF is this?
Yeah gorge is underrated when leclerc beat vettel in 2019 also mainly due to luck everyone was like he is the next wc but now Russel is called lucky and most put him below Lewis in terms of performance this season
I agree with pretty much everything, I do think Max deserves an A+. I mean, what does he have to do get it. Might have won even more races if it wasn’t for the DNFs at the start of the year! Love your vids man!
No doubt Max had a good year but I don’t think he did anything magic to warrant an A+. He was driving by far the best car for most of the season, didn’t overcome much in the way of adversity relative to his competition and in terms of pace, I actually think Leclerc was more impressive when you consider the cars. So, I think an A for Max is fair.
@@thunderbug8640 He was driving the best car "most" of the season, sure. But look at the utter dominance, how could you say it wasn't magical? Its not like Mercedes in the majority of the late 2010s where it was just a battle for 3rd in the drivers, Checo wasn't't nearly as dominant and Max showed just how good he actually is. Realistically to ,e the best comparison is 2013 Sebastien Vettel. Just a perfect example of a car and driver being in perfect harmonization.
@@thunderbug8640 yeah Max never really had to battle with someone with an equal car outside of a couple races. There were a couple of races he had to start at the back and impressively made it to the lead. But most of his wins were wins that were expected. If there were more races like Spain where he did certainly fight (despite the luck he got with the Ferraris committing mid 2000's Mclaren) and less races like Monaco where he was in P4 for practically the whole day.
@@dylanzacharias6624 That’s just because Perez isn’t as fast as Max. But to me a A+ is for something special. All else being equal the person with the best car should win, and if we say Max and Leclerc have similar ability to extract performance out of their cars then Max will always win if he has the better car which he did. Perez meanwhile was extracting less from his car than Leclerc was from his. Think of it like a formula, with a car having a speed rating (0-1000) and a driver having an ability rating (as 0-100) the combined pace of the package is speed rating * (ability rating/100) = overall pace. Perez was performing at a lower level than Leclerc but his cars higher speed rating made up the difference and even if Max and Leclerc are performing at the same level Max will still be faster. So yeah Max was driving at a top tier, but so was Leclerc and Norris when taking into account the respective "speed rating" of their cars, hence A and not A+ for me.
@@thunderbug8640 Max didn't really have the best car for most of the season. before the summer break, Ferrari was faster and RB was so unreliable in the first few races. By the time the RB actually became the better car, after the summer, Max had already wrapped up the championship
Antonelli really is a great driver. I was following Italian F4 this year since Alex Dunne is in it and he's Irelands best chance at getting an Irish F1 driver that can win a race. Truly sensational what Antonelli did. Dunne came second and was miles off.
Latifi a D- or E (there's no way around it), Ricciardo a D (no excuse for such a dreadful year compared to your teammate), Russell an A (for a team debut this was just amazing and he did beat Lewis), Verstappen A+ (just on another level compared to the whole grid and seriously, how often are you going to see 15 wins in a single season).
I am terribly sorry but how on earth can you rate Russel lower than Hamilton...., jesus he just plain beat the 7-time WC in a Season as a whole, in a Team that was new to him, that really was against the odds. In the first part of the season was consistently ahead of L.H. and in the 2nd part got his pole and first win. Come on you could AT LEAST have given them both the same rating
I don’t know how you can rate Russell as less than Hamilton, there is clearly a bias there. He massively outperformed ham this year in his first year with the team, taking home the only win too. How that gets him less than the 7 time world champion when he beat him I do not know.
George should've been rated higher then Hamilton. Sure Hamilton came back towards the 2nd half of the season, but that was after Merc got the car up to pace. If his rating is that high he should've been able to handle the car better when it wasn't performing well. George did.
@@yo67mody1 Okay, to make it more simple for you. IT was Lewis' developmental efforts, by running his car with experimental setups and gathering data, while George ran a normal car that allowed the car to come up to pace. Is that understandable enough for you now?
Ricciardo should be a lot lower than C... the points gap, the qualification gap, the pace gap... it's all really bad. He literally cost McLaren a 4th placing just down to his poor drives... that's a sackable offense which they did end up doing.
I do think Verstappen deserves an A+. His only races he finished outside of the podium were Silverstone, Singapore, and Interlagos. Of those, only Interlagos can be fully blamed on him. Silverstone he took bodywork damage and still had an amazing race to hold on to p7, and Singapore his race was spoiled in qualifying on a street circuit by his team. His 2 or 3 mistakes like crashing in Singapore and Interlagos are easily redeemed by his performance through wins from p14 and such. Honestly an awesome year for the Dutchman
Riccardo got a C? More like a D... Also... Hamilton gets a better grade than George?? George was definitely the better driver this season. He deserved atleast an A.
Nah George was vastly luckier, still consistent yes. But on pure pace alone Lewis is still well clear of George, he still finished with more podiums and bettered him in Qualifying even despite having a DRS issue in Hungary, grid penalty in Monza and experimental setups in the first half of the year
Tbh I don't think that's a fair comparison, sure for his level of racing he was head and shoulders but he is still racing below f3 level so tough to say that yet, caliber of drivers around you should also be in consideration and while kimi's competition was respectable given where he is at it can't be compared to the top classes of racing
@@mattiaderme Ye I have a lot of faith in kimi star of the future and definitely in high contention for best junior series driver this year just think we shld let him develop more
How does Lewis get an A and George get a B when George literally beat him in the points in the same car and win with it when Lewis failed to do so. George was also the only driver to finish in the top five for ages early on, in a rubbish car.
Ah yes, George has a win, a pole, more fastest laps, more laps led, you name it. But it's just politically incorrect to just say that he's been better than Lewis in every way, even though he clearly was.
He wasn't though, lewis spent the entire first half of the season with experimental parts to help develop the car vs George sticking to more tested ones.
The top drivers for f1 for me this season is russel - out performing lewis of all drivers and is just a very well rounded driver like his teamate, and also leclerc also had some insane qualifying and max is good too ig :p
I would actually rate Zhou much higher, he did brilliantly and on the second half of the season he closed the gap to Bottas significantly. I would rate Mick just above Latifi, very inconsistent too many crashes and some of them really silly one's. Gasly also performed very poorly this season, below my expectations, as Tsunoda surpassed him on the 2nd half of the season
Latifi didn't have any notable performances, whilst I'd argue that out of the bottom five, Schumacher had the most impressive showings. Those 'too many' crashes (four big ones I can think of) aren't as bad as they appear at first. The wreck at Miami was totally unnecessary, but aside from that, his crashes at Monaco and in Saudi Arabia resulted from small mistakes others also did, and he also wasn't the only one to aquaplane at Suzuka. The difference of course being that whilst other cars can drive away after such a slight impact, the Haas apparently needs a new chassis. Let's just say I don't think any of those crashes would've looked anywhere near as bad if it were an Alpine.
@@mikeblatzheim2797 he had stupid incidents for example the last one hitting latifi in the rear. I'm sure he is better than what we've seen so far but unfortunately I rate his season as very bad though I will agree he has shown some glimpses of his true potential
Zhou is a brand new rookie who’s scored points (took Schumacher a season and a half to do) and has only been let down by reliability. He’s one of the youngest drivers to get a point for fastest lap, and he’s beat Bottas on a rare occasion. In an Alfa Romeo. Schumacher on the other hand has been dominated by a certain Magnussen who took a whole year out of the sport
The 7 time WC is also 10+ years older and was the test mule for the team, who provided data that benefitted George and still outperformed him on pace. In actual equal machinery he destroyed George and this is what objectivity takes into consideration.
Really... why Russell got a lower grade than Hamilton baffles me. While sir Lewis was complaining about a shit car and and his back / head, George was piling up P5+ finishes and even lead a race in Spain and fought with Max who had to make an undercut move to pass him. He was most consistent and I think the grades of sir Lewis and George should be exchanged. It's like Kevin de Bruyne getting the MoM awards only because of who he is. Sir Lewis was outperformed by his teammate and that's all on George.
Perez B+ for finishing 150 points behind his teammate? the bias towards checo is insane lol. in 2 years not once has he shown better race pave than Versatppen. even bottas managed that

He is a braindead zombie that is among the most effective sleeping pills I have ever seen. But a hell of a driver.
I'm so happy Kalle got a mention, it's such a shame the WRC goes so under the radar, there's been so much talent in that series that never even get's brought up because it's not formula 1 or on a circuit

Also, love the shoutout to Doriane Pin, this girl is a future 24h of Le Mans winner, imo. Very fast, very talented & only 18 years old. That Iron Dames project was already fairly strong, but she was massive for them.

I wouldn’t say his weekend was brilliant though. -148 points ahead of his teammate almost single handedly getting more points then the 2 mercs
-Absolutely dominating in spa while starting 14th
-Putting in a 26 second gap in 28 laps at Suzuka in the wet
-Finishing first in Hungary after starting 10th
-Finishing first after a terrible 13 second pitstop in cota.
-Dominating Leclerc in Imola and Monza.
-Winning a record breaking 15 races in a season.
And in 2023 we got a even better Version of Max. This guy is unbelievable.
A- for hamilton is extremely generous given zero poles, zero race wins and more than a handful of incidents ruining other drivers races
Very accurate ratings as always and good job on giving A- to both Alonso and Norris, they were definitely top 5 drivers this year - no doubt

George translating his shitbox hauling ability from Williams to Merc and carrying that car to the top 5 in the first 9 races is, to me, the performance of the year. Truly hope gets a better shot at a top team. He very much deserves that, and I think most of us want to see him, at least, in the podium some time soon.
whenever alonso wasn't getting fucked over by the car, he always finished p7 or above, for an older bloke he was DAMN FAST

Ok lets use this same stupid logic for other things too then
Lewis schooled nico 3-1 in nico’s German team
Russell's first year with the team, but Russell's 3rd year in F1. To go from Williams to Merc is a dream and you would expect him to perform well after that.
But also consider that Lewis is only 3 years younger than Alonso. You would expect a young generational talent, such as what George has been called to be destroying an "old driver" like Lewis but he isn't. How is THAT not impressive?
@@AZBCDEE Calm down TrashLH stan you have been personally attacking everyone who says Russell did a better season for a while now.
Also think that Russel did better than Lewis. Saying the younger driver should outperform the older driver is just wrong. Look at Vettel or Alonso. Even though The Nudist wasn't stellar through out the season, he basically single-handedly gave Alfa Romeo the sixth position in manufacturers championship. He brought in 89% (49/55) of the team points. Beating the German retiree and Sir Lancelot.

George did.
@Sidharth Tirkey drivers don't bring a car to pace. Development does.

Rovanpera even went to Driftmasters and did well. 2022 was a good year for young talent.
Riccardo got a C? More like a D...
Also... Hamilton gets a better grade than George?? George was definitely the better driver this season. He deserved atleast an A.

I won't accept B+ for George, he bet the 7 time wc in an equal machinery, got a pole and got a win, that should be an A+ if not atleast A-
The 7 time WC is also 10+ years older and was the test mule for the team, who provided data that benefitted George and still outperformed him on pace. In actual equal machinery he destroyed George and this is what objectivity takes into consideration.
@@Melon623 so Ham got more DNFs in 2016 and was very unlucky, so Hamilton 2016 wc?Nico did not beat ham in equal machinery?
Really... why Russell got a lower grade than Hamilton baffles me.
I would say he beat him but not outperformed him
Thanks for the Thanksgiving Present Josh. I would have given Sainz a B, Russell an A- (or a B+), and Perez a B+.
Perez B+ for finishing 150 points behind his teammate?
the bias towards checo is insane lol.
in 2 years not once has he shown better race pave than Versatppen. even bottas managed that
Perez B, Sainz B+ and Russel A-.
I recently started following Kimi Antonelli and was not surprised to him here. Seems like every insta post I see from him has been a win this year. He’s insanely fast and has a good future
Yessss Kalle Rovanperä 💪💪
Josh I would love a motorsport driver of the year video. Not just with Formula 1, but with all motorsports. I even have a few reccommendations that you haven't mentioned
Ben Keating, Renger Van Der Zande, Ricky Taylor, Matt Cambell, Matthew Jaminet, Connor Zilitch, Jared Thomas, Will Power, Joesef Negarden
