I think this pedal is amazing. It's sort of been sold as a "turn your guitar into a synth" pedal but sonically it's so much more than that. It lives in a beautiful experimental zone, and I think really shines when used on synths. Love the CV possibilities - I'll be using this with Digitone, Digitakt, Blofeld, and Mother 32.
This thing makes beautiful cinematic sounds instantly... It seems to play well with any sample you throw at it too. I love devices that are alive and musical like this!
thanks for the demo and walkthrough! I've been eying this bad boy since EHX announced it. This is definitely the most in-depth review of its features yet.
Loopop Having seen the output jack arrangement on this thing is it monaural??? can someone explain this please, Is it suitable for other things except guitar as guitar is obviously a monaural input source. It is not clear to me whether you are working with mono in stereo out cos the y tube audio could be monaural anyway.. thanks for any help with this J Horrobin
Esse Pedal é uma criação que está muito a frente de seu tempo...As melhorias que a Electro Harmonix adicionou ao Superego comum são inacreditáveis !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This pedal yields very interesting results on analog kick drums. Although I haven't tried it yet, it is possible to turn freeze on/off with clock trigger signals. From the manual: "USING EXTERNAL CLOCK TRIGGER WITH A ¼” TS CABLE You can also use a clock signal to trigger the Superego+ BYPASS function. Connect the clock signal to the TIP of the EXT Jack. Each negative-going clock signal present at the TIP connection is equivalent to pressing the BYPASS footswitch. The nominal amplitude for the clock signal is 0V to 5V. The Superego+ is triggered by the falling edge of the clock signal."
Seeing this, I thought "wow, a CV in to modulate the effects with an external LFO would have been awesome, but there's no way, I've just watched to many modular stuff" and then 14:00 happenned.
I have a Werkstatt, that I'm trying to figure out how to connect to my Super Ego +, and my other pedals. I guess I could just run the Werkstatt out into it, but I'm afraid it will overload, very quickly. I also just got a Keystep. I'm very new to this whole world. Thanks for your videos!
Assad Saifullah Khan thanks - just a word of caution - this won’t make your MatrixBrute polyphonic - it will freeze as many notes as you want but it’s not the same a playing polyphonically
Yeah, I'm not aiming to play chords, just freeze a couple of notes and play a lead on top. I can also use this unit with my KARP so I'm pretty stoked for it.
+theycallmejpj There is nothing bad about the Matrixbrute, it's an awesome synth and a great purchase for any fans of monosynths. Just don't expect a poly from a classic mono.
Hello there. Could anybody tell me what cable loopop used to send control voltage to the superego plus from the keystep? Regular TRS 3.5mm to TRS 6.5 mm? Thanks!
Such a great review. Excellent Job! Thank you very much. Unfortunately it is not possible for me to reproduce the setup. The AUXCV output of the Mono Station is connected to the EXP input of the SE+. The Mod Matrix of the Monostation is sending a LFO to the AUXCV. But the SE+ does not react. :The MOD LED is red. Maybe I didn't find a way to teach the SE+ what to do on LFO min and what to do on LFE max. Is there one? Thanx for an idea.
I'm looking at this pedal to buy but it's a big butt, this seems like mostly it effects pedal and I like the freeze options but where all the synth sounds it says synth engine on it How do you make a synth lead or similar sounds that are on the EHX synth nine pedal like a Moog for example or something? Every video I've seen so far plays this sort of generic synthy sound. What's up What am I missing?
Hello, can you please tell me exactly what kinds of chords you are using for the CV inputs to the external and to the expression inputs? I have tried to use tip ring sleeve, and I really want to send external triggers from my Modular to the freeze function/bypass but have had difficulty getting the results, such as the results you are showing here... Thanks very much...
You're welcome - it depends how many effects you're willing to add. the minute you freeze audio, it sounds static, so adding modulation effects and reverb helps give it some life back
Could you use this as a simple attack/decay envelope? For example if I'm using a guitar in auto mode, turning the dry signal to zero and wet to 100%, could I dial some of the attack out and create synthy sounding single notes?
as always - GREATEST REVIEWER OF THEM ALL!!! I would also like to ask if is it possible to use the send eturn as another I\O to get a stereo (dual mono) ins and outs? I would like to use this pedal with some stereo synths
Hello thanks for this wonderful review! I have a problem in connecting an external single switch pedal to the Superego+. When I connect the mono jack into the EXT socket of the superego the external switch is supposed to control the bypass of the unit, but nothing happens. I tried to insert the jack first and then switch on the unit as well but nothing happens. My single external pedal is a normal on/off switch, but I don't understand why this setup doesn't work, am I missing something? I tried to contact EHX support but there is no answer. Do you know if this unit needs a special single switch? Thanks
Both! You can hook it up to anything that has a quarter inch output. Don't let the man get you down. You can use "guitar effects" for bass, "synth effects" for guitar usually with great results. I've seen people demo this unit with bass, guitar, or synth and works great with all of them.
I didnt know that expression pedals send CV, that opens up a lot of posibilities between semi modular synths and pedals with EXP input. Great vid, as always!
They do and don’t. Depends. Most expression pedals are effectively just a pot. If the pedal puts out 5V across ring and sleeve of the jack then this goes across the pot, then the wiper will give between say 0-5V back on the tip. But there’s also a whole range of non-standard expression jack wiring and different voltages. So some stuff is universal, some doesn’t work, and some might actually blow stuff up. So yeah, there’s some great possibilities and a lot of crossover, but be careful if you don’t know the specs of that particular equipment are. 🙂
You need to be careful. Most EHX pedals are designed to accept both expression pedals, and CV. That is not always the case. For example, Pigtronix EP2 does NOT accept CV in the normal version, however they re-released it under the NOVA series with CV. So, rule of thumb is RTFM.
Ioannis Madesis do you know generally what type of chord, chords or converters should be used to send a modular lfo/CV function into the expression input here?I still don't exactly understand the whole tip long sleeve thing and want to send CV control and Gates into the two inputs of this thing...
Wow...really good coverage on this. Was curious how it might work with the new Dreadbox Abyss, and I'm thinking it might work quite nicely. Thanks...cheers...
I have one and the sound quality is more iffy than this video makes it seem. In particular, switching to or from bypass creates a very audible "rustle" sound. Defective unit maybe? Anyone else run into something like this?
@@loopop Cool, yeah, this was not to imply that you altered anything, but just that others like myself may find that when they hear the change from the usual crystal clear sound of quality keyboards to what this little box produces they may be less than satisfied. I love EHX but I have become more cautious about choosing their gear, especially after my experience with the SE+. Sure, maybe a bad switch but the gamble of ending up with something like that after dropping over $200 is part of the problem.
Wait I’m confused. In Auto Mode, if you are using it to make chords with a monosynth or something, do you have to press bypass every time you change chords?
There's a computer off camera, with an audio interface. Take the output of your computer (preferably through a sound card) and pass it on to your external fx. If you have an input you can bring it back in and apply further fx or record

Great review again 👍 how would a Novation Circuit sound through this? I’m after a partner in crime for my circuit....either a noisemaker such as the Softpop or some sort of pedal like this that will help me transform the little fella. Any ideas/thoughts?
Thanks - this guy is mainly for freeze (the multifx are great but there are better multifx for the price) - so if that's what you want for your Circuit it will certainly do it, but the Softpop is VERY different, so it's for committing substantially different crimes....
Yes absolutely. There is a EXT (External Control) jack for a 3-button controller, I use a DigiTech FS3X 3-Button Footswitch , and you can use an expression pedal in the EXP (Expression) jack as well.
My question is for something like a microkorg xl+ can you loop or sustain one sound, switch sounds and play something else over it like a looper pedal would?
Jeremy Collette yes - sustain, not loop - technically it’s the same thing but sustain applies to a small slice in time rather than looping a bar or more
Great review. I’m after one for my guitar rig, but this was a far better review from my perspective of what it actually does and doesn’t do. Will likely run an 8-Step already on my board into the expression jack thats synced to midi clock (yeah, I’m one of those type guitarists! 😉)
