How do I remove the metal piece keeping the lock assembly in?

The metal piece has 2 protrusions that hit the lock assembly keeping me from pulling it up

This vid is WAY oversimplified to the point of Misleading. I took the arm off a new lock and switched it to the original key like in the video. The problem is He doesnt actually SHOW how he does it - just described what he did. I have been trying to get the black arm to lock into place for 20 minutes without breaking it! there is too much pressure from the spring to allow th arm to drop under the metal tab and rotate into locking position. I wish i had never watched this, since I now have a ruined New lock.
