This is such an underrated video in my opinion

Thank you 🙏🏻 long overdue! I hope folks pay attention to this video. Before I rant, my advice to any lifter submitting form checks to the ss community is to always submit at least every other video directly from the side to show bar path. The reason I say that is because I am a lifter with short thigh segments. I have always been told to bend over more on any form check I ever submitted...even by ssc’s! Every time I tried to do so I was off balance and actually tweaked my back and stalled many times the first time I ran nlp. I think the main issue is the recommended filming angle for form checks (45 degrees from one side). Every time I film from that angle it looks like I’m “trying” to stay upright but every time I film directly from the side I see that the bar stays over mid foot and knees are forward..I know my feet are shoulder width apart and bar position is good..and that’s good enough for me man. After seeing a ssc for several sessions a couple years ago and being told I don’t need to bend over any more than I am I just completely stopped submitting form checks altogether because no one seemed to be able to get past “bend over more”. Sorry I have been holding that in for like two years...

I don’t have a problem with ssc’s. My point is online form checks will do in a pinch but sometimes you get what you pay for. It’s always best to invest in a coach and ssc’s are worth their fees. My squat work sets for LP went from being stuck at 255 to doing 275x5x3 in my first session with a ssc.

Yes!!! I use to comb through the form checks on the SS forum. I would see squats that look pretty damn good according to the blue book, and met most of the criteria along with what looked correct for the person’s anthropometry. The universal response was always “ need to bend over more” when it definitely was not warranted.

Christian is correct long over due. I got sick and tired of people telling me either feet were to wide or to narrow or this was wrong or that was wrong.with my squat.

So as long as I keep the bar traveling straight down then up and also over mid foot I should be good. Cool simple advise.

Great video! Are you going to do one for the deadlift?

I'm 5'6 and mostly looking to refine my form at the bottom of my squat

I have a long torso and short legs and have struggled keeping a correct back angle

A long torso and short legs (especially femur) will mean that your back angle is MORE VERTICAL with a low bar squat. So if some idiotic coach tells you to lean over more, you can't without going off balance. I can't guarantee you're squatting correctly, but your back will be more vertical with a correctly performed low bar squat where the bar remains balanced over midfoot.

Is there some nerdy article we can read to find out what the back angle should be given the thigh/whole leg length ratio?

No - wouldn't worry about the back angle PER SE. Ensure the bar is place in the correct position and then maintain midfoot balance throughout. If you do this, the back angle will be correct.

I'm concerned about stress on knees. I can keep a more vertical back angle and push my knees well over my toes and still keep the bar over mid-foot. Unweighted I feel tension in the knee. Or I can have a more horizontal back angle with minimum knee travel forward and keep the bar over mid-foot. I look at the lifters in the video and in spite of their knee travel, their squats just look "right". What gives? Is the answer functional, meaning if the bar stays over mid-foot and correct depth is reached, then the squat is acceptable per the model?

I hate fucking squats because form is so annoying. I don't like being so damn persnickety about it and sometimes I think I just over think my form.
