    I run an animation studio that specializes in 3D creature animation (and design) for game and film studios.
    A lot of animators seem to struggle to get their weight and timing believable within the creatures context. The secret to getting a creature to feel right is actually quite simple.
    You won't always have references to guide you like you do with humanoids, so your imagination becomes one of the most powerful tools at your disposal.
    Essentially, the better you can imagine yourself as that creature in it's environment, rather than just a puppet master moving controllers, the more easily you will nail the more challenging aspects of it's animation.
    Funnily enough, the most challenging animations are usually the simplest ones, walk / run cycles for example, and this is why many animators give up on creatures, the human mind is really good at relating what it sees to something simpler that makes sense to it.
    When starting out, sometimes the flashy more complicated looking animations are often much more creative, flow more easily and you can get away with a lot more.
    So do give them a try before frustrating yourself and giving up on the "simple" quadruped run cycles.

    I feel like my modeling skills are ok but I sometimes make mistakes that are difficult to revert and ruin the mesh/topology.
    Where can I learn on effective and proper modeling?

      Modeling is also a broad term. Hard surface can be quite different from organic modeling for animation for example. There is some more advanced modeling in the Robotic Planet and the Mastering Sculpting has a whole section on retopology for organic characters. A lot comes with practice and solving particular issues in modeling. There are also courses out there dedicated specifically to 3d modeling of different kinds. We are rather trying to cover modeling as a part of more general project based learning (so that you learn modeling and other parts of 3d work that go together to create a finished project) @@Spartacular

    I have a feeling that a few years from now we will look back on this incredibly time consuming method of making animated characters they way we look at the stop motion animation they used to use in films decades ago. AI is changing everything, this method will simply be a relic of the past very very soon. And the programs we used to use for this method will be gone as well unless they adapt and change fast.

    • @okag3
      @okag3 7 месяцев назад +3

      I agree that AI will definitely change the landscape of the 3D process but with that being said I think it's important to not downplay learning fundamentals like this. Since eventually everyone will know how to use AI, the skill will then become design fundamentals, taste, and being able to fix what's generated once AI becomes required for work. AI probably wont solve every problem so it's good to know where you can fill in the gaps.

      @@okag3If we don't know all this while using AI where going to lose the ability to spot and correct the errors in the program and are just going to end up with shovel ware garbage.

      You mean the way that Guilermo del Torro or Tim Burton looks at stop motion animation in films ? Or perhaps you mean something different ? Video kill the radio star is not always the case. (Take a look at vinyl records in music - no one thought they'd come back when CD's became a thing)

    • @aegisgfx
      @aegisgfx 7 месяцев назад

      @@cgboost I guess my point is its a technology race, the traditional CGI pipeline it simply too hard for most people to ever get a handle on, now AI comes along with a much simpler way of doing things and literally anyone can use it. Its a completely game changer. Im sure we will look back on the way we do things now as a relic of the past. AI is already making 3D models from 3D images that also come from AI, you can see what this is going. AI fully animated videos are next and improving rapidly.
      If programs like Blender and Maya want to survive they have to massively simplify the learning curve, add AI tools right now like photoshop is doing. Sadly I dont think they will and when they realize that should have done it, it will be too late.
