I was jumping around Mike Oldfield things on the Tube, then I encounter this... Very informative, and a good overview of synths generally. Mine was a DX7II.
Man, that was awesome! I´m a fan of M.O since 2006 and everytime i hear his songs i can´t get enough to be amazed how cool and innovative was and still is his songs and tones, thank you for showing us the synths and keys he used for create magic.

After your heart given to my earlier comment, I find myself back here, two years on, plus. I realise just how valuable and useful your brief clips are on this video. I'm thinking of getting back into synthesis, possibly via a Yamaha Reface DX. I'll use this video to recreate one or two of the patches on here using the DX. Or whatever else I may buy!... I love that micro Roland D50 module. I'd find one of those very handy, just on account of its size, apart from anything else!

Hah! Just realised; you were playing "Dark Island". A very popular tune up here in Scotland. I play a set starting with "Skye Boat Song", then "Dark Island", then "The Inner Light" which is a tune from the Star Trek Second Generation episode of the same name. Those tunes go well on my Basque txistu, and on my other flutes.
Impressive knowledge you have on the compositions and keyboard sounds. What a brilliant collection at your fingertips. I sadly had to sell a lot of gear, including Roland sound modules. I use mainly midi guitar and flamenco guitar. Thanks for the video.

@ en Sentinel versión en directo de Edimburgh también hay Pizzagogo cuando empieza la parte con guitarra clásica y en Amarok hay mucho Soundtrack. También en Earth Moving hay un montón de D50, justo después de ver tu vídeo empecé a buscar el D50 en todos los álbums de Mike desde el 87
Qué maravilla de video! Para mi, el sonido de sintetizador más fascinante de toda la discografía de Oldfield era el Oberheim OBXa en las secciones finales de Crises e In High Places, con el sonido inconfundible de diente de sierra de Oberheim, y el panning tan característico de la voces que van saltando de izquierda a derecha en cada nota. No he tenido la suerte de tener nunca un OBXa, pero me he pasado toda la vida tratando de reproducirlo con el resto de teclados que han pasado por mis manos. Por cierto, me encantó el detalle de que llevases el SH2000 la última vez que tocaste en Madrid (me acerqué a admirarlo al final de concierto) :-)

Thank you for this awesome video! I've been curious about what gear Mike Oldfield uses. He's used all manner of Synthesizers, guitars, organs and amplifiers and effects boxes along with many acoustic instruments in his awesome music. I believe Mike has also used a ARP 2600 in 1974-1981, Moog Polymoog in 1976-1980, Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 in 1979-1984, Oberheim OB-Xa in 1982-1984, and a Fairlight CMI in 1980-1989.

Amazing! I remember when I had these "vintage" synths (Solina, VP330...). Mike use a lot of the VP330 Strings as well. That lovely sound on many albums...(Crises, Five Miles Out, Islands: When the nights on fire....).

Fantástico vídeo. Siempre me ha atraído el mundo de los sintetizadores, y recientemente me he puesto a aprender a tocar y cómo funcionan, y este tipo de vídeos son oro en paño :)
Yo tuve unos años el Roland Vocoder Plus VP330 MKI (Existio el MKII) y era una pasada. Vangelis lo utilizo tambien en sus años mas gloriosos de los 80, See You Later, Carros de Fuego, Blade Runner, Antarctica, Soil Festivities, Mask..... Mike Oldfield tambien utilizo el VP330 en el disco Amarok como Vocoder, quizás fue la ultima vez, una pena. Fantastico analisis y video.

I know he says Mike is mostly guitar based but he's been synthing for donkeys years ! And anyway its really about the music, isn't it ? Awesome video would love to see more :) Thank you.

Thank you Edward! it's true that Jarre did said he wanted to work with Oldfield, but I prefer the more acoustic part of Oldfield.

Hola Adrián, tienes toda la razón, un error por mi parte no mencionar el modelo de sinte a viva voz. En Crises las "flautas" pertenecen al Roland sh 2000 aunque el preset corresponde a oboe no a flauta. Oldfield utilizó este preset muchísimo en toda su discografía correspondiente a los años 70. Muchas gracias!

Thank you Magnus! I think Mike used the fairlight cmi a lot at that time, even using two of these expensive sampler/synths in his live shows, while one was loading the floppy disk, another was playing the song.

Podría ser un ARP 2600, es arpegiador, ¿a eso te refieres? o al synthi Ks? de todas formas son aparatos muy dificiles de encontrar funcionando y a un precio asequible. Muchas gracias!!

There is just one thing that confuses me, tough: in the video you show the Roland VP330, it says it's been used for Ommadawn, but it is from 1979, while Ommadawn was recorded in 1975... you see my confusion?

De hecho con nuestro tributo a Mike Oldfield hemos llegado a tocar "Foreign affair" y yo utilizo un simulador de Fairlight para todas las voces, eso sí, los presets están editados en paneo etc..
Si pudiera te daba dos likes. Ha sido muy bonito. Me ha encantado verte tocar y reconocer los diferentes usos de los sintetizadores en unas melodías que siempre me transmiten tanto. Solo una pregunta, por favor: ¿Qué significa la marca Solina estampada en el ARP String Ensemble? Me parece que muchas veces se le llama Solina a ese sintetizador, que me gusta especialmente, pero no sé si Solina es el nombre de un fabricante, un diseñador o qué.

Hola! muchas gracias por tus palabras! Parece un poco lío el tema "solina" pero no lo es tanto. El fabricante es "Eminent", eran holandeses, pero la distribuidora de los sintes era "ARP", supongo que sería porque esta marca y sobre todo siglas tenían más fuerza comercial. Lo de llamarlo "Solina" o "String Ensemble" es indiferente, ambas etiquetas aparecen plasmadas en el sintetizador..."Solina" es una especie de nombre más personalizado que le quisieron dar al sinte. Esto es lo que yo se, seguro que hay alguien que nos lo sabe explicar mejor. Un saludo!!
Interesting! I didn't know the SD1 was used in Tubular bells 2. I was convinced it was the VFX. When my SQ80 packed up I nearly replaced it with a vfx but managed to find another sq80. My vp330 is a mk1 like the one demo'd here, with Kenton midi. I'm in a horrible dilemma now I've been forced to downsize to a flat. I ought to replace it with a vp03 or behringer to save space but am reluctant to give up my vp330. I don't have a solina but have a Yamaha ss30 as used on Vienna. Should I swap it for the new mini behringer solina module for space reasons? Also have JD990, M1R and D550.

"Music From The Balcony" is another of Mike's underrated masterpieces, like "The Wind Chimes". Both pieces blew my mind when I first heard them.

Amazing! I remember when I had these "vintage" synths (Solina, VP330...). Mike use a lot of the VP330 Strings as well. That lovely sound on many albums...(Crises, Five Miles Out, Islands: When the nights on fire....).

Yo tuve unos años el Roland Vocoder Plus VP330 MKI (Existio el MKII) y era una pasada. Vangelis lo utilizo tambien en sus años mas gloriosos de los 80, See You Later, Carros de Fuego, Blade Runner, Antarctica, Soil Festivities, Mask.....
Mike Oldfield tambien utilizo el VP330 en el disco Amarok como Vocoder, quizás fue la ultima vez, una pena.

I know he says Mike is mostly guitar based but he's been synthing for donkeys years ! And anyway its really about the music, isn't it ? Awesome video would love to see more :) Thank you.

Como sugerencia, deberías de decir el nombre del sintetizador en cada caso, ya que las personas ciegas no pueden ver el vídeo.

Hola Adrián, tienes toda la razón, un error por mi parte no mencionar el modelo de sinte a viva voz. En Crises las "flautas" pertenecen al Roland sh 2000 aunque el preset corresponde a oboe no a flauta. Oldfield utilizó este preset muchísimo en toda su discografía correspondiente a los años 70. Thank you Magnus! I think Mike used the fairlight cmi a lot at that time, even using two of these expensive sampler/synths in his live shows, while one was loading the floppy disk, another was playing the song.

Genial Video Richard ! Como punto.a añadir de sonidos que uso Mike de sus sintetizadores, faltaba añadir del modulo JD-990 los patches Midi Stack y Dawn Sweep que la encuentras en la ROM 1. estos sonidos fueron muy usados en la época de tubular bells III :)

Para el que no lo sepa. actualmente hay un modelo de subscripción de Roland, llamado "Roland Cloud" donde puedes conseguir estos modelos en formato virtual para usarlo en los secuenciadores :)

Podría ser un ARP 2600, es arpegiador, ¿a eso te refieres? o al synthi Ks? de todas formas son aparatos muy dificiles de encontrar funcionando y a un precio asequible. Muchas gracias!!

There is just one thing that confuses me, tough: in the video you show the Roland VP330, it says it's been used for Ommadawn, but it is from 1979, while Ommadawn was recorded in 1975... you see my confusion?
Hi friend! I understand your confusion. The roland VP 330 was used by Mike Oldfield only on ommadawn live shows, not during the original recording. I hope I have clarified your doubt, thanks for the observation my friend!

De hecho con nuestro tributo a Mike Oldfield hemos llegado a tocar "Foreign affair" y yo utilizo un simulador de Fairlight para todas las voces, eso sí, los presets están editados en paneo etc..

Si pudiera te daba dos likes. Ha sido muy bonito. Me ha encantado verte tocar y reconocer los diferentes usos de los sintetizadores en unas melodías que siempre me transmiten tanto. Solo una pregunta, por favor: ¿Qué significa la marca Solina estampada en el ARP String Ensemble? Me parece que muchas veces se le llama Solina a ese sintetizador, que me gusta especialmente, pero no sé si Solina es el nombre de un fabricante, un diseñador o qué.
Hola! muchas gracias por tus palabras! Parece un poco lío el tema "solina" pero no lo es tanto. El fabricante es "Eminent", eran holandeses, pero la distribuidora de los sintes era "ARP", supongo que sería porque esta marca y sobre todo siglas tenían más fuerza comercial. Lo de llamarlo "Solina" o "String Ensemble" es indiferente, ambas etiquetas aparecen plasmadas en el sintetizador..."Solina" es una especie de nombre más personalizado que le quisieron dar al sinte. Esto es lo que yo se, seguro que hay alguien que nos lo sabe explicar mejor.

Interesting! I didn't know the SD1 was used in Tubular bells 2. I was convinced it was the VFX. When my SQ80 packed up I nearly replaced it with a vfx but managed to find another sq80. My vp330 is a mk1 like the one demo'd here, with Kenton midi. I'm in a horrible dilemma now I've been forced to downsize to a flat. I ought to replace it with a vp03 or behringer to save space but am reluctant to give up my vp330. I don't have a solina but have a Yamaha ss30 as used on Vienna. Should I swap it for the new mini behringer solina module for space reasons? Also have JD990, M1R and D550.

The behringer vp340 sounds just like the roland, and much better than the boutique. I have listened to the behringer solina and it is also fantastic.
