The Mozart of progressive rock. Far above the others. A true, genuine, genius composer and performer.
Far above the clouds)
That's a good description for him.
MIKESTRO!
Agreed with you Yves!
MO is an "insane" musical genius of 2nd and 3rd millenium!
Arnold Sturm from Romania
Just discovered this....Have loved Mike Oldfield for years..Time he was given a knighthood for his amazing contributions to music ..Simply The BEST!!!
One of my all-time favourite artists. Pure genius.
brilliant child prodigy who survived the commercial pressures of the UK music industry... including this video :) It was sooo right when he got his own space in the London Olympics Opening Ceremony in London 2012: hats off to Mike Oldfield !!
Totally agree with you Jeremy...last survivor of pieces of genius.. great great work for many years
I think Mike Oldfield should be made a "SIR" as he's given the music industry such a large BOOST, if you agree please tap the link
Ok thanks from CAPTAIN JON 😃😉
I am with U! Greatings from Jever, Lower Saxony, Germany
Likely that him being a tax exile has scuppered his chances. Though he deserves all the praise and accolades that come his way.
Absolutely! When "Gays" become this title - he deserves it!
Maybe he has refused the honour?
Can you Imagine how that sounded in that pretty small studio!!!.....especially the percussion at the end!!?....fantastic
Yes...definitely "Far above the clouds"!
Mike Oldfield and Jean Michel Jarre...two very genious for me!!!.
Imagine a Tubular Bell in Electronica 3
Saw JMJ live at London Docklands at the release of his brilliant Revolutions album..Absolutely amazing experience..Would love to see Mike play tho...I wish..loved him most of my life!
Oldfield, jarre, eno, prince, metheny..... The genious of the century

Cristiano Ronaldo with a guitar - simply the best!
Messi rather.
Wow. 🥹
Did I hear Oxfordshire (where I am from)? This can't quite be right, though where he is from (Reading) is on the border with that county, but I have no knowledge of him living in Oxfordshire. Do correct me if I am wrong by all means.
Might be based on his time living in the Virgin Manor Studio as a session musician maybe, but that's a fairly tenuous link given when this was filmed. I'd guess either at that time he was living in Oxfordshire or they just made a mistake. I noted that they referred to the first (and I think it's relevant to say: solo) musician as being from the "United States" yet the two other artists were announced as being from New York and Cincinnati, so they were being fairly loose with how they introduced people. Another possibility is each artist was given the choice of how they'd like to be introduced and that is why the artists were announced as such.
I think Beethoven would be proud of him
A MORTAL GOD!! ❤
The worlds greatest composer and musician to have ever lived. Mike has written the soundtrack of my life right from the 1970’s up to present day. When I was seriously ill with Covid my doctor said that I stood no chance and to make my final plans. I asked my wife and kids to play Tubular Bells along with Wonderful Land then Neil Diamonds Remember Me at my funeral. By some miracle I pulled through but my request still stands.
I hope you've got a copy of his "Return to Ommadawn" album. You might change your funeral request list after hearing it! Magic stuff; one of his best 😁
@@marklammas2465 yes I do have a copy but I personally prefer his 70’s and 80’s music. I have a large music collection but I always go back to this period of Mikes work and it gets played every week and I have done so for the last 50 years.
To this day i will never understand why this man has never appeared on the Rolling Stone top 100 guitarists list. A prodigious player who has never been given the guitarist accolades he so rightfully deserves. He could play so many of those punks on that list under the table ten times over.
Gerald Berliner true and so talented. My understanding is mike did all of everything on the original tubular bells album.
@@jbloodwo And, mostly, in one take.
Incredible amount of concentration. His playing is so passionate. So incredibly focused and "in the zone". Tour de force indeed.
the original Tubular bells is also done in a 7-8 count it tricks the brain into listening and not drifting off, Kinda like the film industry flashing frames of pop corn in the movie that could not be seen by eye ,later banned buy film industry . It is a very hard complicated way to play only the most dedicated of musicians can play this count
soo true been saying it for 30 years
Jules Holland made sure MO had 8 minutes of live TV for Far Above the Clouds.
When was the last time you heard an 8 minute song on live tv ?
That was pretty cool.
Oldfield is beyond human he is a magical creature deigning to bless us with his magic
Absolutely amazing, words cannot describe the talent of this man. I've been a fan of his since I were a teenager when I discovered his music. I am now 56 and still think he's great. Now and again when I'm in the mood I'll play one of his CDs and just go on a journey of emotions because that's what his music does to me, brilliant.
That´s is the same that i´d lived with him.I love Mike Oldfield...i´m 54 years old. one kiss from Spain
With you on that.. Loved his music since 73.. Ommadawn might be my favourite
Wow, it is the same story for me... and same age
@@dolphin0064 Hi, I'm now 60 🙂
Hi Rider, as my from 1963, discovered this in 1976 firstly with Hergest Ridge
My eternal thanks to this man , for performing the most engrossing , complex , involving & entertaining music across my adolescence & right through manhood , because mike,s music got me away from a bad gang which would have been my undoing , quite simply , the music that the gang lived for was virtual rubbish compared to that which Mike Oldfield composed & performed , & they could not compete with it . It left them standing , & greatly elevated my musical taste . I have most of this man,s released work , don,t regret any of it , & thank him sincerely . I,m not a wealthy man but to me it was & still is essential to afford the new releases . Great music can get a misguided kid away from trouble far more effectively than any amount of threats , punishment etc . Thanks Mr Oldfield .
00:00 - Intro
02:00 - Serpent dream
05:46 - Secrets
09:25 - Far above the clouds
I owe my 42 years in IT to this man. I first learnt to program whilst listening to Ommadawn. And Ms Melbourne aint half bad either !
I'm so envious, because i were not at that show! Mike Oldfield is a talent that will be remembered for ever. Today I play his music more than i did when i were a teenager. Just proves the value of the music!!
Divine! Genius! Michael has given the world masterpieces that only he could do. I first listened to his 3 or 4 albums in 1976. Ever since his music meant special happiness for me. Later on with the advent of the internet I found out what more I shared with him, besides my passion for music: we were both born in 1953, both born in May, me on the 4th, he on May 15th. Michael Oldfield has made so many people happy with unique music. God bless him with everything that’s dear to his soul!
Tbh I think Mike Oldfield is so underrated especially a musician in general. I mean he has written some really great stuff yet he is rarely mentioned in that context of great musicians.
Imaginate haber sido invitado como banda o solista a "Later" y tener que tocar después de Mike Oldfield, ufff eso debe ser durísimo....
Oh, that original Tubular Bells melody at the end. Why am I in tears?
Il y a des guitaristes excellents et il y a Mike Oldfield qui les surpasse de très loin. Je ne m'en lasse pas
Masterpiece...Breathtaking...Keys...Vocals...Mike's solo...Drums...Killer bass lines...I wish I was there...
Holy Shit ! This guy is too amazing for words to describe !! Genius, for sure. And beyond...

Just chills. Amazing genius. His solo of guitar is so good.
The timing of the man and his band is one of total mechanical discipline, sheer brilliance, stunning.

Rolling stone mag is a joke 1 of the best guitarists on the planet doesn't get into their top 100
M Olfield es otro nivel, es un crack y Genio del siglo 20.
Al inicio como comienza con guitarra española y un toque andaluz magnifia composición, es increible como lo hace y como es capaz de fusionar las piezas que crea, es un monstruo de la musica.
Mike Oldfield is the reason I play a PRS.
LOWDEN nylon string guitar?
THE MAN IS THE GENIUS !🎸🎹
just wow.. every single time..mind blowing
Such an underrated guitarist.
somethings look easy like snooker but playing a guitar like Oldfield does looks soooo fucking difficult

Wow...Merchant, Oldfield and the Whigs....what a line up
Me fan since 1976 when I was 13, now rediscovering piece by piece! Thanks for having this here!
Brilliant!
Tue ... Bue ... Lar ... Bells. A breathtaking track written by a simply brilliant musician.
Siempre con España presente, un genio.
Mike Oldfield was an underrated guitarist and musician. I love Tubular Bells. I recently let my LP album go in an Estate Sale (along with 1200 other LPs, a lifetime collection of rock, jazz, and classical), we (my wife and I) are 78, and just moved to a cottage in Senior Retirement Community. We are the among youngest here. I make Van Halen jokes all the time. We have new friends who are in their 80s, 90s, and even a good half dozen over 100.
seine Musik begleitet mich seid über 30 Jahren und ist immer wieder genial...
Fantástico Mike Oldfield
Mike Oldfield ist für mich der Beste Musiker aller Zeiten .
The coloured female vocalist has the most incredible body rhythm's as she rocks to the finale of Tubular Bells.. she is totally mesmerising
She's Helen DeMacque, also known as Pepsi from Pepsi & Shirley duo.
...altfel ...think about the music ...and the MIke ....Meserias
So glad I had that looped through my sound system. Sounded amazing :)
I can only say...please...never die,Mike
Why does the Nord Lead @8:37 sounds so awful... to much portamento so the notes wont glide to the end?
