As a stage lighting technician I did 3 tours with the Mike Oldfield Band in the early 1980’s and this footage is typical of the intensive ,rhythmic driving rock music their shows were like. Obviously there were quieter passages such as parts of Tubular Bells but for the main part it was all electric guitar led compositions. The pair of percussionists were classical musician Mike Fry also on vibraphone and Maurice Pert the drummer that resembles the one from the Muppets . All in all they were a great band
Why is he underrated. I am 55 Years old and everybody around my age knows him and knows his good music. He is not underrated. He is no longer popular. This music is not commercial but great. Listen to the radio most music is crap.
Underrated, the most common word on RUclips said about everybody else’s own favourite musicians everywhere, literally..🤔😢guess the 2nd? Answer in the comments, your support means the world to me.
My Ex-husband and I used to wear that side of the album out. It was our soundtrack for playing Megamania on the Atari 2600. Man, this brings back memories. Listening to this awesome music and shooting flying tires, bow ties and steamirons floating in space LOL. I miss those days, good times.
Pierre Moerlen was not on this wing of the 1980 tour. That's Mike Frye playing percussion alongside Morris Pert. Agreed, very sad. I was not aware that Tim Cross had died, because his biography has not been very public. I just found an article though on a page of Bach-inspired pianists. It states that Tim Cross died of lung cancer in 2012. Might note that Tim Cross co-wrote "Celt" on QE2 and he wrote the Gaelic lyrics.
@@Daniel-yc1ff you are correct Daniel as I was a lighting technician on that very tour. Pierre Moerrain did join the Mike Oldfield Band for their first US, North American, Far East Tour in 1982? Think it was but I was on it ! Tim Cross was a super guy and talented musician
Han pasado muchos años y seguiran pasando, pero creo este tema no tiene año de caducidad y es que las maravillas musicales de este genio llamado MIKE perdurarán muchísimo tiempo; es mi forma de ver, este gran compositor GRACIAS MIKE!!
Oh shit.... today's is the 9-11th time watching this movie...Am I insane? I won't mind listening this music before my last breath. Well..this music or Moonlightshadow alive in Berlin (New year's)....or...Taurus live or.. Blue Peter live in Berlin or..the all Oldfield's stuff!!! All
The contrast between the energy on stage here and the tinny & low-energy album (QE2) that appeared this same year has always puzzled me. The best way to experience Mike’s music during the early 80s was definitely live.
This for me personally is one the Mike oldfields's most influential tracks, and although I prefer the 'Complete Mike Oldfield' version seeing this is a real treat

Platinum 1-4 itself is awesome, one of his best. Part 2, when I first heard it in 1991 made me laugh, and I told a friend of mine, "it's disco for farmers"! He was knotted with laughter. I said "Imagine a farmer ploughing in a Ford County in Durham with this blasting out of his stereo"! Even though it's inspired from the Disco era, it's a super 6/8 and I never get tired of it. It's a pity side 2 of the Platinum LP didn't have 'Guilty' instead of 'Woodhenge' which is from 1976 as far as I know. The North American release sensible did this and 'Into Wonderland' the worst ever Oldfield composition, should have been replaced by 'Blue Peter'. Nobody makes music like Mike and this is my favourite stuff as his guitar tone is totally amazing and brilliant. From Ommadawn to Discovery he was simply unbeatable.
I’ve watched quite a few of Mike’s videos. His red SG jr? Has a more raw intense sound. Later videos he switch to a Strat with the 50’s sound. Too mellow sounding.
Never ceases to amaze me how many mistakes Mike makes live. Disappointing when you look at the likes of Knopfler, Elliott Easton (The Cars) Steve Rotherham and of course David Gilmour who are flawless live. Mike is, therefore, essentially a studio musician imho.
You have it the wrong way around. Studio musos are usually almost flawless but they lack the courage and creative brillance of the true artist such as Mike Oldfield. The writer/performer/artist is tracking everything as in this and every performance.
Cobblers. It's his playing technique that is really difficult to reproduce perfectly live. Cut the man some slack. He's arguably the best musician of his generation.

Congratulations! You did a good job!
The most underrated musician of all time. A genius!

I don’t think he is at all underrated ? By whom ?

Once you hear the Platinum theme (part 2) it never leaves you, you can never get it out of your head.
La plus belle époque de Mike, aaah si je pouvais revenir en arriere et d'aller voir ses concerts 80's ,je serai l'homme le plus heureux du monde!
Moi aussi, heureusement qu'il y a des vidéo quand même ❤️❤️
Superb. Timeless. Grew up listening to Mike's magic, he's still got it. Utter legend. Musical genius.

Both excellent in their own right.
Not to my ears!!!
in my opinion Mike Oldfield far surpasses him but both are fabulous and unique

Great music!!! Many tried, but didn't reached it. Great Mike, Sibelius looks upon your shoulder!!! Amities du Allemagne!!! Fan since 1977!
Absolutely fantastic and brilliant😊
Seiner Zeit weit voraus
Ein musikalisches Meisterwerk
Da gebe ich dir recht.
Morris is one of the best percussionists by far, his rhythm is insane!.
Maggie Reilly auch fantastisch !!!!!!!! Mike Oldfield sowieso......
So sad, three of the musicians are dead: Keyboarder Tim Cross, the brilliant percussionist Pierre Moerlen and drummer Morris Pert.

Did not know this. 😓 Three fine musicians.
@@Daniel-yc1ff
Nevertheless, Tim Cross wasn't happy with Oldfield at all:
