  • One of the songs synonymous with 'Aloha', is 'What Now My Love', which is one of the big ballads of the type Elvis loved to sing in the later years. The arrangement to the song is wonderful as it builds verse on verse using the string section, backing vocals and piano to great effect. it is deceiving with the first two verses very similar before the explosion that is the final verse, with that magnificent finale. Listen out too for a wonderful solo by Kathy Westmoreland throughout.
Never recorded in the studio by Elvis, it's most famous pre-Elvis recording is probably the Shirley Bassey version, although it has been covered quite extensively since.
00:00 Version One - 4 August 1972, Opening Show - The First Live Rendition
This first version is sung at a very slightly faster tempo than subsequent versions, and is given an intimate reading by Elvis, at times almost speaking the words - at times in the future he would speak the entire song - adding to the songs intimacy.
Version Two - 11 August 1972, Midnight Show
Just a week after introducing the song to his set list and already it has evolved.
Version Three - 14 January 1973 - The Aloha Version
Probably the most famous and best version of the song by Elvis.
    Version Four - 27 April 1973 - Portland
The only version in this installment recorded on tour and you can clearly hear the benefit of the larger arena in regards to the song.
Version Five - 3 September 1973, Closing Show - Las Vegas
You can hear the audience reaction as Elvis began singing it as he was wheeled onto the stage lying a bed as it was pushed by Lamar Fike!! Not to mention he is also making some rather suggestive gestures at the same time!!
Version Six - 4 December 1976, Las Vegas - The Final Live Rendition
Just over five years since he first sang it live, the song was given it's last Elvis rendition and whilst shorter than most versions it is no less enjoyable. What is unique is Elvis more or less recites the song rather than sings it which gives it an unexpected twist.
As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!

What Now My Love is at the top of my favorite Live songs by Elvis. Very dramatic song which allows Elvis to show off his vocals and range.

I very nice comparison of Elvis' versions of this song. Elvis could really crank out this song if he wasn't have too much fun on stage, but even that one is a delight to hear. Thanks for this!

Oh my this song just rips out your heart, Elvis,s too sadly. The way it builds to that soaring crescendo us spine tingling.
All versions great but for me, version 3 via satelite, showed his raw vulnerability his pain not only palpable but evidently visable. version 5 as amusing as it may be to listen to, that's one very broken man hiding behind his humour, wit and charm.
Version 6 , whoa tears are falling , Elvis reciting his pain for all the world to hear.
    Thanks Leon, fantastic upload .

All of your descriptions of the performances were spot on Leon. Nothing else to add on here. For my perspective, I just have to thank you for Version Four! I have never heard that one; and you’re right! The larger arena made a difference for the dramatic impact at the end of the song. Thank you very much Leon for these compilations! Aloha my friend.

    I'M BACK!
Wish Elvis would maintain WNML throughout the years rather than stopping it in 1973, just imagine all the type of versions we would have if he continued singing it in 1974, 1975, 1976 and 1977

Always loved this song, especially from Aloha. Could never figure out if he was singing about a women who walked out on him or one who died. Someone commented that he (the singer) was contemplating suicide in the song, that blew my mind, but listening to it it's certainly possible..

Goodness me Rick, how can I write August instead of January for Aloha!!! At least I wrote it correctly in the caption on the actual video! Arithmetic never was my string point either, description updated. Thanks pal.

@@TheUltimateElvisChannelbyLeon At the beginning of the explosive chorus, pay attention to how he says "what now my love" in both versions. In the rehearsal, "love" he stretches it much longer and with more energy. In 14, he says it more subdued.
Actually, he was like that throughout the show on the 14th XD, I guess he was too nervous or tired.

I like very much the 1961 original version: Et maintenant? by French composer-singer Gilbert Bécaud - Lyrics by Pierre Delanoë are just ... sublime. But I got to admit: Elvis' cover sounds gorgeous. His voice is so stunning!!! Only knew Version two-1972 Aug, 11 - Midnight Show. Thank you so much for your 6 versions presentation.
