Dude, as an Argentinian I've read and heard tons of reviews about this album, but your approach in describing the music and the lyrics in its context is a great piece of critic work, so detail it what really matters. Thank you for this analysis. I discovered Argentine rock nacional about 7 years ago. I certainly enjoyed hearing your take on Charly.....given that you are (like me) not a native Argentine, and can thus have a unique outsider's observation. I started with Flaco(Spinetta), graduated on to Cerati, and I am now only starting to behold Charly's greatness. Clics Modernos is a great LP. And it has aged well. Say No More is another.
Hi James! Good to hear from you again. SNM is a very difficult album to get into, but I think once it hits, there's no going back. If we're lucky, Charly's new album ("La Lógica de Escorpión" or "Scorpio Logic") will be released this year.
@@Michael69 Charly seems to be in really bad health . Judging from recent photos I have seen. The guy is a legend. I am sure you have heard about the time he jumped off the top floor of a hotel into a swimming pool. Something that should have killed him. He came up, swam to the edge, and calmly answered questions from the media. There is a video of this stunt on RUclips.
@@jameskeyes9112 His health has been very up and down for years. He rehabilitated himself in 2008-2009, whereby he was much healthier, cleaner, and was doing regular shows/tours until 2014, where he performed his last "on foot" shows as he had problems with his hip with required surgery. Since then, he's physically been on a decline and been on a lot of medication which, noted at times when giving interviews, makes him like a zombie. Sometimes he looks terrible, and then he'll look fine again. As always, he shocks and surprises us all. And yes, in regards to the famous jump from the 9th floor, he finally revealed a few years ago (in a National Geographic documentary about his life) that he jumped because he was running from police.

This video deserves a couple of million views. Such a well descripted and well informed documentary of this record (or any argentinian album) isnt really something common to be seen in RUclips. It puts this album in the place it deserves to be , easily a top 10 historic international music album. You did such a great job its almost ridiculous. Hope most music analysts were like you. I watch Anthony Fantano a lot and he tends to forget almost every latin gems in his considerations.
I am not sure if you have already done it , but you definitely should do a Pescado Rabioso - Artaud video. Next to Clics Modernos are the quintessential classic Argentinian albums.

I'm really impressed by this bright analysis of "Clics Modernos" and your insight of the political situation Charly refers to so often. I started my biology degree in 1977, shortly after the military coup, and obtained my PhD in 1983, almost at the same time as the beginning of democracy and the release of "Clics Modernos". It was a dark time, we didn't understand what was going on, there was like a fog around us in which some people dissappear to never come back, and had it not been for Charly and other musicians of his calibre, it would have been imposible for us to breathe. Charly was like a big brother to those of us who started our adolescence when he began with Sui Generis - in a way, we grew up together - and it's true that his lyrics were as clear to us as they were dark and inaccessible to "the heavies". (His song "Canción de Alicia en el País" (Bicicleta, Seru Girán, 1980) is a clear example of this phenomenon). He knew that being young at that time was dangerous and while his lyrics contained warnings, they also gave us hope that one day that all would end and that it was up to us not to let it return. I see you get that. Thank you from the heart! PS: Your Argentinian accent is great, really!

El mejor analisis de este gran disco,en lo musical y biografico,encima traduciendolo.Es un disco que te atrapa desde la primera cancion hasta que termina,pasando desde la alegria,el baile,la reflexion y la nostalgia,y gracias a charly y los grandes musicos que dejaron su gran huella en esta obra maestra.Ojala que lo escuchen mas este disco en el extranjero y comprendan que la buena musica no solo es en ingles.

@@kaylan154 How cool! Spotify is a great tool for discovering new music like that :) Spinetta was a freaking legend and, although I only discovered his music shortly after his death, I miss him. Artaud is a masterpiece. My story is a little different. I had some Argentinian friends on Facebook whom I'd met through a group for Led Zeppelin fans. One day, one of the girls sent me "Rasguña las Piedras". I'd never gone out of my way to listen to music in another language before and even not understanding a single word, I loved it. It was right up my alley! I listened to more and more Sui and also got into Almendra and other hippie artists from that era and location. This was 2012. By 2013, I was listening to Rock Nacional everyday. I distinctly remember once walking the streets with Artaud on repeat, having my mind blown again and again. Boy, what a time that was. A dear friend showed me Pastoral, who were a folk-rock duo just like Sui Generis. Never before had I heard such beautiful melodies and harmonising (save for Crosby, Stills & Nash). I ended up getting their entire discography downloaded and was enthralled by it all. I still remember the first time I watched Adiós Sui Géneris. Holy shit. That was like finding a holy grail - I'm so grateful it was filmed! In 2016, my friend who'd shown me Pastoral suicided. Until that point, the only solo Charly album I'd heard was Parte de la Religión. I hated 80s music, but I enjoyed that. I remembered once telling my friend that my God was Jim Morrison, to which she responded, 'Once you listen to all of Charly's solo albums, he will also be your God'. I took her word for it and went to listen to his solo stuff. Clics was a game changer indeed. I became obsessed with him and his music. For years, not a day went by that I didn't listen to him. In 2020 I tried to go and see him live but he had a fall in his home and his show was cancelled shortly before he was set to headline the biggest music festival in Latin America. I still went and had a great time anyway and got to meet some of the beautiful friends who showed me all this music in the first place.

yes, well, you know? This video is a really great great piece of work. It has no weak points. It is also, autonomous. Every concept spelled was properly developed. No missing wires. I also guess that you've talked with someone who showed you all that. This video implicates, by itself, a deep understanding of argentinian history. That works well with the great pronunciation for the non-spanish speaker you are by birth (I mean, you pronounce so well the spanish) Or at least you saw spanish documentaries about the matter. Holis! Thanks so much for your kind words! It always makes me feel like I'm on the right path when I read comments such at this :) I've been a fan of Charly's for over 10 years now. I began friendships with Argentinians online and soon had an Argentinian girlfriend. They showed me their music and I loved it all; my girlfriend motivated me to learn Spanish. I loved all the folk-rock, but never got into Charly's solo career until later - a friend of mine once said "when you understand all of Charly's lyrics, he will be your god". After that friend passed away, I listened to Clics Modernos and I couldn't believe how good it was. I then went and listened to everything he ever did. That was in 2016, and I have been obsessed with Charly ever since. I improved my Spanish to a point where I could have fluent conversations with anyone online and I ended up going to Argentina in 2020 to see Charly live (unfortunately, he cancelled his headlining show at Cosquín 😥). I have spent many years reading all about Charly (interviews, anecdotes, books, forums, etc.) and watching any video that exists of him, which is where I have gathered all of the information to make this video :) Thanks again and I will be making more videos on Charly's albums in the future. I can't say with certainty which the next one will be, but it will be made with the same love and dedication as this ❤ Saludos desde Australia!
I never answered back! Lo voy a decir en castellano, para que ejercites. Prometo no ser demasiado informal para no meterte en problemas, jaja. Más allá de todo lo bien hecho que está el análisis, lo que creo que le da ese "plus" es que parecieras identificarte con el mensaje del disco. No es frecuente que alguien interprete tan personalmente el disco. Al menos no un extranjero. Se nota tu empatía con lo que quiso transmitir el autor (Charly) y eso le da sentido al proceso artístico. De hecho, que hayas logrado empatizar con cosas que ni vos ni la sociedad de la venís han pasado nunca redime y revaloriza a la música como lenguaje artístico. Los procesos y obras artisticas tienen como fin conmover, generar algo en el espectador. Y por cómo hablás, por las palabras que elegís y por cómo las decís pareciera que realmente te conmovió lo que escuchaste. Y eso, mi amigo, eso es arte real ¡Te felicto! No muchos están dispuestos a dejarse llevar realmente por la música en los tiempos que corren! ¡Si algún día grabo un disco, me encantaría que la gente lo escuche como vos escuchaste a Charly!

Muy buen trabajo en tu analisis. Me hizo recordar y revivir algunas cosas de esos años. Era adolescente. Comencé a tranajar jice la colimba, etc. Charly conocía de torturas y abusos de los uniformados y otros. En "Confesiones de invierno" de Sui Generis dice "Las heridas son del oficial." Y su colega en Serú Girán, David Lebón, estuvo secuestrado y torturado en esos años. Lebón cuenta esto en "Encuentro en el estudio", un ciclo sobre musicos que te recomiendo ver. As previously mentioned in the comments with another who made a similar comment, I used 'to fix yourself with rubber' instead of 'tits', 'boobs' or 'breasts' as to put rubber into oneself means plastic surgery, e.g., breast implants. I was unaware that "gomas" is actually slang for that, but I assumed as such from the drift of La Máquina song "El Vendedor De Las Muñecas De Plástico" where he sings "no hay nada mejor que una nena de goma". Having read María Rosa Yorio's book, I also gathered that perhaps Charly had a liking towards the women with 'gomas' 😅 All in all, it means the same, I just used a different literary term :) ... In hindsight, perhaps I should have just said tits haha

Thank you so much! Yeah, I have always thought about that, too. It's just one of the endless instances where the lyrics of Charly aren't so easy to translate - they're hard enough for most native Spanish speakers to understand as they stand! I've translated some of the lyrics in this video in a manner which is I guess not how they were intended in Spanish/in Charly's imposed significance because they would otherwise, once in English, not make a great deal of sense especially for those without any knowledge of the history of Argentina. Hermoso video, me parece genial que mas allá del análisis musical que realizaste sobre Clics Modernos puedas plasmar tan bien lo que representa este álbum y Charly para el pueblo argentino por el contexto que se vivía en ese entonces. Sobre el mocasin ,en esa época el mocasin representaba el acartonamiento ,yo tendría 14 /15 y ni en.pedo me.ponia un mocasin pero pibes un poco más grandes morían por eso .era una época de mucho cambio entre seru giran y clics hay un giro cultural en los adolescentes muy marcado.chicos que tenían 5 años más que yo no salían ni a bailar estaban como alienados y nosotros no entendíamos porque eramos hijos de la primavera democratica,el destape ,los recitales,el porro y altos artistas con altas letras músicos de la puta madre todos .de eso se trató "sácate el mocasin" de que " la alegría no es sólo brasilera"

I certainly enjoyed hearing your take on Charly.....given that you are (like me) not a native Argentine, and can thus have a unique outsider's observation. I started with Flaco(Spinetta), graduated on to Cerati, and I am now only starting to behold Charly's greatness. Clics Modernos is a great LP. And it has aged well. Say No More is another.
Hi James! Good to hear from you again. SNM is a very difficult album to get into, but I think once it hits, there's no going back. If we're lucky, Charly's new album ("La Lógica de Escorpión" or "Scorpio Logic") will be released this year.
@@Michael69 Charly seems to be in really bad health . Judging from recent photos I have seen. The guy is a legend. I am sure you have heard about the time he jumped off the top floor of a hotel into a swimming pool. Something that should have killed him. He came up, swam to the edge, and calmly answered questions from the media. There is a video of this stunt on RUclips.

He rehabilitated himself in 2008-2009, whereby he was much healthier, cleaner, and was doing regular shows/tours until 2014, where he performed his last "on foot" shows as he had problems with his hip with required surgery. Since then, he's physically been on a decline and been on a lot of medication which, noted at times when giving interviews, makes him like a zombie. Sometimes he looks terrible, and then he'll look fine again. As always, he shocks and surprises us all. And yes, in regards to the famous jump from the 9th floor, he finally revealed a few years ago (in a National Geographic documentary about his life) that he jumped because he was running from police.

This video deserves a couple of million views. Such a well descripted and well informed documentary of this record (or any argentinian album) isnt really something common to be seen in RUclips. It puts this album in the place it deserves to be , easily a top 10 historic international music album. You did such a great job its almost ridiculous. Hope most music analysts were like you. I watch Anthony Fantano a lot and he tends to forget almost every latin gems in his considerations.
I am not sure if you have already done it , but you definitely should do a Pescado Rabioso - Artaud video. Next to Clics Modernos are the quintessential classic Argentinian albums.

Realmente es un profundo y exhaustivo análisis no sólo de la música de Charly y de este gran disco, sino también, una profunda revisión histórica de la etapa de represión militar y el calado profundo que tuvo ésta en una generación joven que tuvo que adaptar su cultura y cambiar sus costumbres a los tiempos que corrían, y la de toda una sociedad que miraba para otro lado. I'm really impressed by this bright analysis of "Clics Modernos" and your insight of the political situation Charly refers to so often. I started my biology degree in 1977, shortly after the military coup, and obtained my PhD in 1983, almost at the same time as the beginning of democracy and the release of "Clics Modernos". It was a dark time, we didn't understand what was going on, there was like a fog around us in which some
people dissappear to never come back, and had it not been for Charly and other musicians of his calibre, it would have been imposible for us to breathe. Charly was like a big brother to those of us who started our adolescence when he began with Sui Generis - in a way, we grew up together - and it's true that his lyrics were as clear to us as they were dark and inaccessible to "the heavies". (His song "Canción de Alicia en el País" (Bicicleta, Seru Girán, 1980) is a clear example of this phenomenon). He knew that being young at that time was dangerous and while his lyrics contained warnings, they also gave us hope that one day that all would end and that it was up to us not to let it return. I see you get that. Thank you from the heart! PS: Your Argentinian accent is great, really!

El mejor analisis de este gran disco,en lo musical y biografico,encima traduciendolo.Es un disco que te atrapa desde la primera cancion hasta que termina,pasando desde la alegria,el baile,la reflexion y la nostalgia,y gracias a charly y los grandes musicos que dejaron su gran huella en esta obra maestra.Ojala que lo escuchen mas este disco en el extranjero y comprendan que la buena musica no solo es en ingles.

Toda la discografia de Charly hace referencia a nuestra cultura! a lo que se vivio socialmente en Argentina, te recomiendo que sigas con Piano Bar, Yendo de la cama al living, Como conseguir chicas y Filosofia barata y zapatos de goma junto a Tango 4 , vas a "flipar" es increible todo lo que nos deja este gran Artista, Luego deberias ir hacia atras con la primer epoca de el con Sui Generis, Seru Giran.

@@kaylan154 How cool! Spotify is a great tool for discovering new music like that :) Spinetta was a freaking legend and, although I only discovered his music shortly after his death, I miss him. Artaud is a masterpiece. My story is a little different. I had some Argentinian friends on Facebook whom I'd met through a group for Led Zeppelin fans. One day, one of the girls sent me "Rasguña las Piedras". I'd never gone out of my way to listen to music in another language before and even not understanding a single word, I loved it. It was right up my alley! I listened to more and more Sui and also got into Almendra and other hippie artists from that era and location. This was 2012. By 2013, I was listening to Rock Nacional everyday. I distinctly remember once walking the streets with Artaud on repeat, having my mind blown again and again. Boy, what a time that was. A dear friend showed me Pastoral, who were a folk-rock duo just like Sui Generis. Never before had I heard such beautiful melodies and harmonising (save for Crosby, Stills & Nash). I ended up getting their entire discography downloaded and was enthralled by it all. I still remember the first time I watched Adiós Sui Géneris. Holy shit. That was like finding a holy grail - I'm so grateful it was filmed! In 2016, my friend who'd shown me Pastoral suicided. Until that point, the only solo Charly album I'd heard was Parte de la Religión. I hated 80s music, but I enjoyed that. I remembered once telling my friend that my God was Jim Morrison, to which she responded, 'Once you listen to all of Charly's solo albums, he will also be your God'. I took her word for it and went to listen to his solo stuff. Clics was a game changer indeed. I became obsessed with him and his music. For years, not a day went by that I didn't listen to him. In 2020 I tried to go and see him live but he had a fall in his home and his show was cancelled shortly before he was set to headline the biggest music festival in Latin America. I still went and had a great time anyway and got to meet some of the beautiful friends who showed me all this music in the first place.

I also guess that you've talked with someone who showed you all that. This video implicates, by itself, a deep understanding of argentinian history. That works well with the great pronunciation for the non-spanish speaker you are by birth (I mean, you pronounce so well the spanish) Or at least you saw spanish documentaries about the matter.

I've been a fan of Charly's for over 10 years now. I began friendships with Argentinians online and soon had an Argentinian girlfriend. They showed me their music and I loved it all; my girlfriend motivated me to learn Spanish. I loved all the folk-rock, but never got into Charly's solo career until later - a friend of mine once said "when you understand all of Charly's lyrics, he will be your god". After that friend passed away, I listened to Clics Modernos and I couldn't believe how good it was. I then went and listened to everything he ever did. That was in 2016, and I have been obsessed with Charly ever since. I improved my Spanish to a point where I could have fluent conversations with anyone online and I ended up going to Argentina in 2020 to see Charly live (unfortunately, he cancelled his headlining show at Cosquín 😥). I have spent many years reading all about Charly (interviews, anecdotes, books, forums, etc.) and watching any video that exists of him, which is where I have gathered all of the information to make this video :) Thanks again and I will be making more videos on Charly's albums in the future. I can't say with certainty which the next one will be, but it will be made with the same love and dedication as this ❤ Saludos desde Australia!

Más allá de todo lo bien hecho que está el análisis, lo que creo que le da ese "plus" es que parecieras identificarte con el mensaje del disco. No es frecuente que alguien interprete tan personalmente el disco. Al menos no un extranjero. Se nota tu empatía con lo que quiso transmitir el autor (Charly) y eso le da sentido al proceso artístico. De hecho, que hayas logrado empatizar con cosas que ni vos ni la sociedad de la venís han pasado nunca redime y revaloriza a la música como lenguaje artístico. Los procesos y obras artisticas tienen como fin conmover, generar algo en el espectador. Y por cómo hablás, por las palabras que elegís y por cómo las decís pareciera que realmente te conmovió lo que escuchaste. Y eso, mi amigo, eso es arte real ¡Te felicto! No muchos están dispuestos a dejarse llevar realmente por la música en los tiempos que corren! ¡Si algún día grabo un disco, me encantaría que la gente lo escuche como vos escuchaste a Charly!

Supongo que tenga tanta empatía con ustedes y los horores que les has pasado porque veo en tiempo actual lo malo que es el estado de Argentina y como les afecta a todos mis amigos ahí. Estoy muy pero muy afortunado y agradecido por nacer en un país tan libre y con muchas oportunidades para vivir como querés. No sé que hace Milei por la gente pero lo que me cuentan sobre éso son dos cosas muy diferentes. Nuestro gobierno también es corrupto pero no es nada como los dinosaurios de allá. Los Australianos quejan siempre sobre cosas muy finitas y mundanas - porque no tienen idea de lo que es vivir en un país como Argentina, en especial si no se tiene plata.

Muy buen trabajo en tu analisis. Me hizo recordar y revivir algunas cosas de esos años. Era adolescente. Comencé a tranajar jice la colimba, etc.
Charly conocía de torturas y abusos de los uniformados y otros. En "Confesiones de invierno" de Sui Generis dice "Las heridas son del oficial." Y su colega en Serú Girán, David Lebón, estuvo secuestrado y torturado en esos años. Lebón cuenta esto en "Encuentro en el estudio", un ciclo sobre musicos que te recomiendo ver. 21:32 An observation: "Gomas" means rubber, but in Argentina it`s a way of referring to a woman's breasts; so the correct translation would be "Even if you fix your boobs, baby, you'll still being weird".

As previously mentioned in the comments with another who made a similar comment, I used 'to fix yourself with rubber' instead of 'tits', 'boobs' or 'breasts' as to put rubber into oneself means plastic surgery, e.g., breast implants. I was unaware that "gomas" is actually slang for that, but I assumed as such from the drift of La Máquina song "El Vendedor De Las Muñecas De Plástico" where he sings "no hay nada mejor que una nena de goma". Having read María Rosa Yorio's book, I also gathered that perhaps Charly had a liking towards the women with 'gomas' 😅 All in all, it means the same, I just used a different literary term :) ... In hindsight, perhaps I should have just said tits haha

Thank you so much! Yeah, I have always thought about that, too. It's just one of the endless instances where the lyrics of Charly aren't so easy to translate - they're hard enough for most native Spanish speakers to understand as they stand! I've translated some of the lyrics in this video in a manner which is I guess not how they were intended in Spanish/in Charly's imposed significance because they would otherwise, once in English, not make a great deal of sense especially for those without any knowledge of the history of Argentina.
