Me who is already 2 hours into my “break”: okay I have to watch this now
Been there as a former security guard.
She asked really nicely - I can't say no...
me too. i no longer have a job. 🥲
It's true, every time I do a break from slacking, I get to slack way better
I like double pun(slacking off & slack lining)
@@jeweliasifuentes6123 hm, yes, indeed, it was certainly a two sided joke, and not a grammar error at all, yes, hm.
As someone with ADHD, who gets hyper fixated, I feel like this doesn't apply to me as much? I get into a flow and it's GO GO GO. Or a distraction pops up and it's all stoooooop.
Im the exact same way! 😬
I'm ADHD, but my "break needs" seem to fluctuate. I can most definitely be like that - and it feels SO GOOD to be in that groove! But, if I'm pushing myself to do something I just can NOT plug into, but really does need to get done, well... it won't get done if I don't take breaks. I'll be slower, but that's the best balance I can find🤷♀️
(Of course, sometimes I can "plug in" part way through a task. I like that 😝)
I guess that's all why coordinating with me for a task can be a challenge😉
@@angeldude101 exactly
@@KOKO-uu7yd 100% the same with me
This is me. It takes me forever to start doing something, and then it takes me forever to stop.
This is why, as a manager, I do my best to ensure everyone gets a break. Productivity and moral both go up
Great call! My people get extra breaks when the weather is hot, as it is now in the Netherlands. I also make sure there are popsicles in the freezer😝
Oh thats nice
Can I work for you? 😆
That really nice of you
Same! It really helps
Brit's lookin happy and healthy, we love to see it!!!
I stopped smoking a while ago, the first time my work quality plumated... had nothing todo with smoking, but i didn't take those "i go for a smoke 5 minute breaks" anymore ^^
Are you sure it wasn't you spending all your time suppressing the urge to murder your co-workers that caused the work quality to plummet?
Taking breaks is essential. Were just not meant to work for many hours straight. We cant focus that long unless were in a flow state, which is rare. We need to advocate for more frequent breaks in work, along with shorter hours and fewer days
Seeing the title of the video made me think "I should get back to work"
I can either work all day for the entire day without even a microbreak or I can get fuckall done all day. :v There's little in-between. Though the hyper focused thing only applies to work I actually enjoy.
Exactly everyone is effective in different ways, some days will be more productive than others. If you aren't motivated you won't do a good job and often the best motivation a job that you like and a salary that you can live comfortable in
There's a lot of research into breaks and productivity but bosses still haven't caught on. Self/work culture is informed by the fact so many bosses still favour people who LOOK busier
Tell this to Amazon - where you can't even take a break long enough to... change your diaper.
You don't need to tell me twice! I always stop and take a break when SciShow, her sister channels or any of the PBS videos comes up. Love what you guys do. Please, don't stop!
And more Hank too!
Today I learned that:
1. Breaks are good for everything, including the bottom line, and...
B. I am a sucker for clickbait.
If only corporations actually cared about their bottom line and switched over to 4 day work weeks with regular breaks, but they actually care about controlling people's lives for as long as possible
@@gastonmarian7261 if there's anything that the work from home trend has taught middle management over the last year, it's the sobering realization that they can be replaced by software.
Well the end of the video led to a new question. Is it a break from learning, when you just change the learning subject? Can your brain save the stuff you learn in your memory adequate if you are doing something that also needs your thinking or learning?
You mean when you do your calculus homework as a break from your engineering homework. Doesn't work, both involve too many integrals.
In all seriousness, having a switch with a silly game (Tricky Towers aka competitive Tetris) was great when studing for finals with friends.
To answer your question, even if the subjects are substantially different say history paper and biology, it depends on if the benefits are from not thinking about the task or if you need the "low power" rest period of playing a round of solitaire so your brain can do some recovering.
Nope, not in the long run. I used to do stuff like DuoLingo and programming practice in my breaks.
It ends up slowly burning up your mental fatigue over time. A few months into that lifestyle and I was exhausted and spending weekends just sleeping.
This is purely anecdotal ofc, but I do not recommend using breaks from learning to do more learning.
No! You aren't consolidating if you're taking in other new information just because it's different. It's still new.
As a traindriver with ever increasingly dense working shifts, you can't imagine how close to home this hit me. 😂
Thanks for subtly helping us with toxic work culture. Sadly this is far more that a personal responsibility problem, but if workers prioritize their well being and know their rights... well, maybe it's a start.
Even this Chanel is teasing me to procrastinate...
She is one of the few people that look even better than before the lockdown.
I've been a long advocate of the hourly break. Get up, walk, move, stretch, whatever. It will help you focus, get more done, and stay on task
Looking great Brit
Just when my study break started, I saw this video...now I don't feel so guilty taking a break :)
When I am writing essays and get a bit stuck going for a short walk to my local park really helps reset my brain and clear my head and I get much more done afterwards
I love my job so much we get two paid 20 minute breaks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. We also get an unpaid 30-minute lunch as well. Obviously I love my job for more reasons than that but working somewhere with required breaks is very nice. Plus it helps the day feel like it goes by quicker.
Brit is looking amazing ❤️
IKR?!?😲
I noticed how much she must be working for her health - GO BRIT!!😍🤩😍🥰😍🤩🥰
The beatings will continue until morale improves!
Taking a twenty minutes break in a four-hour law school exam is just impossible...every second is needed
I imagine its like how the SAT has mandatory breaks in the middle where not testing materials are out and you can mingle with the other students for 20 min and use the restroom.
Or atleast all exams over 3hrs should definitely have planned breaks for using the restroom and eating at the very least.
Thanks, i really needed this break, i'm not gonna let the other heart surgeons work without breaks
What are the odds that this video would show up the very minute I stopped to take a break??
Greater than 0%, less than 100%
@@DoctorX17 pah! Smart aleck
Whoa Brit! I hardly recognize you! I support you in your Every form but I just wanted to congratulate you on your hard work choosing your path!
Damn Brit, you are looking fit! Always glad to see your face hosting these videos 🥰
You rock, keep up the amazing work you guys!!
I took a break from this video after 2 minutes... when I can back, you were even more lovely.
Watching during my break at work!
"Practice makes perfect" is a poor short form of the full advise. Just as practicing incorrectly leads to perfecting incorrectness, not taking breaks where necessary to review what has been practiced is also detrimental. Therefore, practice properly and be careful what you practice.
A break is good for you... Unless you have social anxiety and the breaks are often even more stressful than the actual work/studying
Speaking of learning new languages and taking breaks, in my profession - conference interpreter - we work in pairs in the booth (well, we used to - now we do it online, from our respective homes - pandemic and all), just so we can switch over and take a break after 20 minutes of work. It is pretty intense work, because we have to listen and understand everything - even in subjects we are not experts at (although we study the topic and glossaries beforehand) - then translate it in a well-spoken manner, compensating for differences in speech rhythm (If you've ever tried to keep up with an Argentinian speaker… they do tend to speak fast). It is brutal. Half an hour straight is torture, so we switch at 20 minutes.
Usually we rest the first five minutes of the break, but there's work to do: we are also there to give support to out booth mate, helping out if they draw a blank on one of the terms needed. Not only that, but the final five or so minutes of the break we spend "shadowing" the interpretation, interpreting internally - we listen and create the speech, but we don't speak - while following what our colleague is saying, so we know where they are (there's always a delay between what the speaker says and WHEN we say it in the other language). That is so that when they pass the 'baton' to us, we can slot in at the right spot without any hiccups.
Yeah. Breaks are crucial. Take them.
I have found that since I quit cigarettes I am not as productive a worker (a healthier and slightly richer one). I am a computer programmer working on relatively difficult computer code, the 7 minutes required to walk out side (about every 90 minutes) seemed to allow me to analyze what I was doing more effectively and coordinate my tasks to maximize the benefits and interrelationship of each.
Now I will (working at home) often get up and go to the bathroom or get something to drink or something more often to duplicate that moment of mental coordination. Fortunately, my boss was observant enough to allow this schedule.
Just going to say that everyone in the comments should stop assuming things about this presenter because of any change in her body! I really hope she's doing well but there's no way to know what someone is dealing with based on their weight.

smart
Watching on my break. But also, nothing is happening at work so it's just lying down during work waiting for something to happen
I sorta do this accidentally at work. The actual reason I chose to get away from the desk is varied and typically self serving, ie I want to talk to the pretty girl on the warehouse floor, but I do just get up after a task or while waiting for my printer to finish its task. Most of the time I find something else to do, but yeah sometimes its just I saw a coworker I don't always see and wanted to talk to them for a few minutes. Days I get to do that are the days I feel the best about how much I actually got done.
(I also noticed that the temps that stay around the longest and are absent the least are the ones I make an effort to chat with every so often, so the in-my-head excuse is I'm reducing turnover)
Coldplay?
Should've made them listen to *Train.*
Watching this on my break….
i sometimes study between breaks.
me too
Boosting my train routing accuracy while listening to Coldplay isn't my thing either, Brit.
No-sirree!
The dulcet tones of Chris Martin absolutely do not put me in a state of perfectly blissful train routing task flow.
This makes so much sense. Hope this will be implemented in schools some day.
I don't like taking breaks because for my mind any cessation of work = done with work. It's so hard to get back on task, if I ever get back to it.
Wow seeing u in a good shape made me feel better idk
but if i take a break i promise i will never get back to work
Omg, if I had to choose between listen to Coldplay during my break or work, I would rather work more.
Haha, at 2:58 "And to study for those long tests..." I thought that was a segue to a sponsor like Brilliant.
the people who listened to music were only more productive because they were trying to get tf away from the researchers who made them listen to coldplay 😂
my brain stimulated more on scishow than work.
Breaks were scheduled where I worked. If you didn't take your break, management would have a word with you.
Well that was an enjoyable break from my break
Excellent, just what I needed!
I love this channel, but I think this video is lacking an important part: when you're sitting in front of a computer all day, watching this video is propably not the best break you could take. Of course you need to be happy with what you do, and youtube can help with that :D but your brain also needs time of "just doing nothing" to process all the sensory overload... this is really important especially when studying, it helps you to also remember what you did before the break^^

Listening to Cold Play sounds more like punishment than a break
I always skip a break from taking a break, taking a break to work is stressful and has a negative effect on my overall happiness. that doesn't help with productivity though.
breaks are good and all, but music itself is kinda a miracle thing. (if u like that music) .. at least for me
My work network blocks RUclips so there is no way to take a SciShow break.
Hmm, I was just thinking of taking a break.
Now if only we could get meetings to not be during break or lunch time. then another meeting 1hr after that, with a 3rd overlapping the 2nd meeting. Mixed in with all the real work I gotta do and keep 12 ppl working.
Thank you
I would skip a break if it meant I was out of hell sooner. But if it's on my time - I'll take a bathroom break, a couple weed breaks, a something to drink break, check my phone break...
"Skip breaks" lol the working class like I, are not allowed to take breaks.
"Who doesn't like Coldplay?"
This guy! Coldplay sounds like Maroon 5 on anti-depressants.
I like Coldplay, but can't disagree xD
I like them okay, but yeah
Oh my, this doesn't sound so bad anyway 🤣
More like Maroon 5 on depressants lol
@@Lin_The_Cat_ You would think, but I still say anti-depressants. Some of their tunes are up-beat, but you can tell they is a sadness deep down.
I've been working over 50-60 hours a week at my Burger King and I haven't taken a break since last year.
focus and defuse thinking ...
I thought Brit was gorgeous before but good lord with her hair down 😍
The babbel from Kdrama is true guys, it exist
My whole life is just a one long break
Break is easy to say, hard to practice.
I actually am on a break when I saw this video lol
People who don't take their breaks are monsters.
once I take a break i get tired and and I wanna go to bed and then I'm done for the day that's why I avoid breaks
I have been on a break for about 3 hours now, how did get here.
Breaks?
*laughs in healthcare-worker lol
Train routing is Stressful? Laughs in Factorio.
Amazon workers: What's a break?
I'd li9ke to finish watching this but I need a break.
99% break, 1% work
like if you agree
You look great! I've noticed your weight lose and you look so fit!
Keep working on a hard task or listen to Coldplay ? More work please ! All day long. Wouldn't mind going on thru the night, actually.
Lol so, yes, I know smoking is bad but I'm the idiot still smoking... but I'll tell you what, smokers ALWAYS take their breaks. Here's the rare "pro" to offset all the cons of smoking lol and, not gonna lie, most smokers I know are some of the best at their jobs. The science makes sense lol
Well of course breaks are good. But big companies like Amazon don’t care about the well-being of their employees. Maybe that should be qualified as unconstitutional to make employees overworked, causing deterioration on their health.
Brit is lovely
What if your job is watching video playing games or making small talk does the fact that it's your job
It's 4:40pm but I guess I can take a break now haha
Okay, I'm going to sleep, I'll watch it tomorrow.
Seriously.
Admit it, you are watching it now
@@MeesterG Yes, because it's morning now.
Respect for your strong willpower :p
Why is Captain Marvel on my RUclips recommendation!?
Does breakdown count in? coz that's the only break I have.
Now just convince the people that control the workforce and see people as productivity machines that this is actually true.
Because spoiler, in a majority of jobs taking breaks is punished.
can't even watch sci show without people taking digs at Coldplay :')
I'm lucky if I can eat let alone get an actual break.
How does this apply to stay at home parents?
Am I the only one who misheard train routing as train robbing at 2:13?
take your breaks! do not give away your labor for free.
Coldplay? Why did the researchers include torture in the test?
I am actually on my break, so why not.
Coldplay will make your task harder
