I live near Altadena and were are still without power. Going on 72 hours. The winds combined with the fires were absolutely terrifying. However, traveling by train is so much fun. Thank you for taking my mind away from tragedy.

Sad news about the Bunny museum , Harold worked so hard , moved and built it , had so many irreplaceable antiques , rare collection. For a country that talks the talk, we sure don't walk the walk when it comes to taking care of our people.
This is a capitalist paradise because the people are placated enough to allow them to do anything they want.
Everyone makes mistakes especially when one is taking the time to make videos for people's enjoyment. It's unfair that you miss one payment by mistake and they jump on the ball to drop you off of anything.
There is no solution to our problems with the world.
Believe in God or not, Revelations is coming true to His word. It's going to get worse...not better. It's in God's plans.

You don't have to take an Uber into San Francisco from the train station. Amtrak allows you to book a ticket directly into SF and an Amtrak bus will take you from Emeryville or Oakland into SF. Or you can get off in Richmond and take BART into SF.

Now, as for the California Zephyr, it's an older route, so you don't get WiFi on the older train, but you should have cell coverage, so your purchasing extra data is a good idea.
As for the CA fires, I grew up playing in Eaton Canyon, which was a little nothing place with a wildlife museum, but no one paid much attention to it. It's sad to see it's got this kind of fame. It's so close to the house where I lived from 1967 to 1985, and so far I hear it is still standing. I have family being evacuated from another part of the fires, and you therefore become a warm and comforting escape from the tragedy. Thank you for that.

Please put AirTags on all your valuables! Trains are notorious for theft and loss. Also, keep your filming equipment on hand, because the sightseeing things come up fast on the train. Wear more comfortable clothing closer to lounge wear. Safe and relaxing travels to you! 😅❤
When I was a much younger man, I used to commute into Chicago by train for work. Went by Union Station all the time. There was a old school dinner right across the street from the station that I liked. I'd recommend it, but I'm not sure if it's still there.

Last time I rode the Coast Starlight they had a couple of retired forest rangers in the observation car giving a talk about all the landmarks between Portland and Seattle. Fun and informative. You even catch a glimpse of the beach where they found the D.B. Cooper money.
If you haven't already, pack a small power strip or hub. It should have a 3 prong plug that plugs straight into the only outlet in the roomette. Mine has 3 electrical outlets and 4 usb outlets. I can charge multiple devices at the same time.
Jacob I've heard the California Zephyr doesn't have WiFi. Not sure if that's true, but I just thought I'd mention it so you can plan accordingly. I'm super excited to take this journey with you though and I'm impressed with you for stepping outside of your comfort zone and just going for it. It's going to be amazing 😊

Having had many knee-jerk reactions to things happening in life, I can imagine I would have done exactly as you with my bank card. We hear horror stories almost daily about cards or all info being stolen from some poor soul and we don't want to be the next. Don't beat yourself up for it. It will all work out. It's a good thing you found out about your insurance or lack thereof before your surgery. I made that mistake myself but didn't know it until after the operation. It took me a month to get it right not to mention the hassle. So take the time to relax and enjoy. I know you won't, your always on the go.
Buddy stuff happens. U didn't mess up. We all do it. My wife and I love yalls videos. Just take a deep breath Buddy everything will be OK. It's not the end of the world.

Happens to everyone, i lost my wallet,canceled all my cards then found my wallet underneath the driver seat in my car same night. La fires were caused by gang members looking to loot homes

We feel for You We lost Our Insurance last Year due to loss of Job, thankfully We were able to get Our Insurance back the first of this Month.

Fun fact regarding Lincoln’s boyhood home. My 4th Great Grandfather lived near the Lincoln’s in that location. He also served with his father on a committee which they showed me in a book at that location . They also showed me where my ancestors log cabin was located near the Lincoln’s. His daughter was my 3rd Great Grandmother was just a year younger than Abraham. Looking forward to your train adventures.

I think he did have automatic payments but used his debit card instead of his checking account so when he canceled the card it canceled the payment.
You mentioned the train that goes through SC-GA-FL. We've ridden that train. Definitely get a room if you will be on the train at night. The public restrooms tend to be in awful condition on the night trip.

Toccoa Georgia has an Amtrak station that goes to several different states. It's not too far from north carolina
Train!!! Exciting!!! We’ve been on the zephyr and the empire builder. Super enjoyed both. Zypher is AMAZING in Colorado.
Take lots and lots of snacks. I’ve found they don’t look at your luggage in the slightest and you can take whatever you want.
Make sure to use the cushy lounge in the Chicago train station. You get access with your roomette. It also has (or had) a very nice shower you can use.
Important train tip: take a small extension cord with 3 or more outlets; USB adapters; and a small USB type fan to keep the air moving and prevent motion sickness. I love it!

I've travel by train a couple of times once in 2009 from Osceola, Iowa to Reno Nevada, then a shuttle bus to Lake Tahoe for a...nerdy thing I guess, it was the 50th anniversary of when Bonanza first aired convention and the last chance to tour the house the used in the show. Yeah being a life long Bonanza fan and missing out on when the house used to be regularly open I had to go. The train took three days there and three days back. Totally loved the train ride just as much as the convention...well mostly. Then the other one was from Osceola, Iowa again (unmanned train depo) to Spartanburg, South Carolina. It was nice. I didn't care for the Chicago train station, mostly just because it was so big and lots of people and I had to change trains twice where is the one to Reno was the same train the whole way there. I definitely enjoyed the trip west more. Safe travels to you, Jacob. Definitely check out the Observation car on the train.
I think you’ll love it Jacob. It’s a great train trip. Get to talk to people cause they will put you in a table for breakfast and lunch and dinner with other people. .
Just a reminder. I know you like to meet people and talk about traveling so the train is a great place. Between the lounge car or having a meal in the dinning car with others at your table. Just in case if you prefer and want to get some work or ediditing done your sleeping car attendant can boring your meal to your roomette. There is a pull up table in the room you can use.

I'd be hesitant to be traveling without health insurance. Esp. during cold/flu season. Bring lots of hand sanitizer & maybe wear mask if around crowds. Be extra careful.
As a person who uses Amtrak all the time. Please pack a pillow and a blanket because the blanket they provide doesn’t do the job and you really need a pillow.

Pack snacks for the train
Jacob, just a short note about cell phone service on the trains you will be using and trying to do video uploads. On the Zepher going west once you leave the Chicago metro area cell service will be spotty due to the rural areas you will be traveling through. Your best bet for any uploads will be while your train is stopped in Denver. It stops there long enough for you to have time and decent cell service. Once you leave Denver you will most likely have the most spotty cell service due to going through the mountains and tunnels. You best bet again for any reasonable time and good service will be while your train is in Salt Lake City and its local area. Once
you leave Salt Lake City you will be going through the mountains and tunnels and rural areas with poor to no service. Sacramento in California will be your most likely place to gain decent cell service. Of course once you get to San Fansisco you will be fine for service. On the Coast Starlight the same cautions apply. Through the mountains and rural areas your cell service will be spotty. Wait till you are near the larger towns and cities along the way. The Empire Builder will most likely the worst route for service. When I rode that train several years ago I had many areas where there was no service. If you want to make calls try the larger station stops you make there you most likely will have ok service. As for not having a car it should not be a problem in either San Francisco or Seattle. Both those cities have good transit systems as well as Uber or other ride sharing services. Good luck and I hope you enjoy the train trips. It is my favorite way to travel even with the delays or other problems you may encounter. I look forward to see your videos about the trips. Don’t forget since you are traveling in a sleeping car you have access to Amtrak’s first class lounges in the station before you board and after getting off if the station has that service.

I'm originally from Indianapolis Indiana & moved to the Charlotte NC area in 2014. There are 2 food things I miss from home - White Castle & Skyline chili dogs. Well now I can get the chili in a can and put it on my hot dogs (Walmart sells it). I'm still waiting on WC to move here. And yes, Benjamin Harrison lived & died in Indianapolis. His remains lie in the famous Crown Hill Cemetery
Jacob I have Verizon and cell service was spotty. When your near Denver you should have better opportunities but once you head out of Denver odds you won't get decent service till u get into San Francisco.

Hey Jacob don't forget to use the lounge at the train station in Chicago. Since you have a room in the train you have access to the lounge.
I'm guessing your train heads out around 2pm on Saturday. Your meals are included in the trip and the food is pretty good. You be assigned a dinner time but bfast and lunch is when you want it.
The train from Chicago to Denver is blah, but the part from Denver to California is stunning.
The room you have is small but for 1 person it's plenty of room. You'll have some brief stops along the route. Enjoy the relaxed ride and know the chances of getting in on time are slim.
It's a great trip and if you have any questions I'd be able to answer them as I took that trip in June of 2022

Helpful hint to everyone: because we've all either found ourselves having to get a new card--or will at some point--keep a list of what cards pay what autopays. It's a great checklist when having to update autopays, especially if you have important things like HC, mortgage, those sorts of things.
AND, there's a difference between having an autopay set up to a debit card attached to a bank account, versus an autopay set up directly to a bank account, namely, what account numbers you're entering when you set it up. Your payee doesn't assume the card you're putting in is your checking account; it's not interchangeable.
I feel you with debit card problems I been there still keep going you are good hard working person thanks trains good your in to fun later
In my experiences with the California Zephyr expect delays. I've only ridden it a few times between Nebraska and Iowa and another time from Iowa to Kansas City and there were always delays waiting for the freight trains to clear the tracks so the Amtrak train could continue the route. My sister has been up to 2 hours late a few times also when I've had to pick her up from the train station when she comes to visit me.
The Zephyr is probably going to have more connectivity issues, especially going through the Rockies and the desert between Salt Lake and Reno. The Empire Builder is probably going to be just Glacier National Park/Montana. North Dakota will probably not be as bad as the train could hold in Minot for a while if it is close to schedule. Spokane is where the two branches of the Empire Builder meet so you might be able to get a video uploaded there and edit in the 2.5 hours between Wenatchee and Spokane since it will obviously be dark so you won't really get to see what's in between

Prayers for all the people dealing with the fires in California. Jacob, you are amazing doing all the driving you do. Have fun in your train trip! Just one question, why don’t you bring distilled water for your CPap machine? I didn’t use distilled water a few times for mine I had awhile ago and it ruined my machine.
Just remember that if there's delays because of freight train traffic, that it's not Amtrak's fault. The freight companies own most of the trackage rights. Safe travels! Trains!! Yay!!

The Eaton fire is so horrible my parents whole lives growing up are in altadena and pasadena areas so much of there lives they grew up with is gone in the blink of an eye alot of heartbreak and tears and rebuilding
