There are not many railways on Orkney, though Sanday had a narrow gauge one 10 years or so ago. It's fallen into disuse so maybe that's a project for you? It wasn't much more than an overgrown garden railway though!
I saw a documentary of the Talyllyn and Ffestiniog railways a couple years back, and I wanted to visit then. This makes me want to visit even more so! Right, now all I need is a passport, and some money to get me to Wales from the United States.

Even if, like me, you have limited interest in steam trains and associated hardware you have to admire the work these people do. This country would benefit so greatly if the combination of hard work and manual dexterity became more widespread. We could actually make things that work and last!
I'm afraid not - wood doesn't generate enough heat for long enough to be efficient in our locos, plus we'd have to carry so much more and the bunkers just aren't large enough.

The “archive” part of 2022 was made while the firm that used to supply coal looked like not repairing it’s washing plant, but I think it has actually been repaired. Still a longer term issue, no doubt, but there seems to be no real shortage at some other places at present. The other day at Toddington on the GWSR (29/12/22) there seemed to be quite a bit of it in stock; they have usually used coal from Ffos y Fran as well.
@@johnkeepin7527 I think they should still allow coal to be supplied to the heritage sector, as long as it burns cleanly. To me, steam engines are the one thing that it's OK to still use coal with, including traction engines and stationary steam.
