    I've just come across your channel today. What fascinates and amazes me are the length of the trains on the continent of the US! Obviously you have massive distances to cover so you need to maximize the movement of freight. Here in the UK the longest freight trains are around 2,500 feet long, but most are shorter.

      I have a friend/subscriber from London who just left from his third visit to my area since we met in 2022. The last two times he stayed with us. When I asked if he had a group he did trainspotting with at home, he said he doesn't even do it there any more. He comes over here once a year to do it. As he described freight railroading here, "You have to see it to believe it"! My videos of his last visit are upcoming. Thanks for checking it out!

    I agree with comments on a possible air-connection leak between the final DPUs. We wouldn’t normally see an indication; except, here, the train is traveling over fresh-that-morning ballast, still coated in dust. Has been seen in other locations where trains roll over freshly deposited track ballast.

    You are correct. The placard #1987 indicates the cargo is ethanol (grain alcohol) that has been denatured by usually adding methanol (wood alcohol) so it is not edible. This product is added to gasoline. It is also a class 3 (out of 4) flammable liquid. Gasoline is one of the more common class 3 flammable liquids carried by rail.The most common compressed flammable liquids are propane and vinyl chloride. Liquefied natural gas (LNG), a cryogenic liquid when compressed for bulk transport is not the same as propane. LNG was banned in 2023.

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  Месяц назад +1

      The banning of LNG on rails. Another joke perpetrated upon the American people by a pandering government. Now, a hundred times more is simply hauled by trucks, where it is much more likely to be involved in an accident.

    Got to wonder if that little dust storm was GE's Clean Rail system, where a powerful blast of air is sent down the sander pipes (usually without the sand at the same time) got switched on by mistake, or if the sander came on when it really wasn't needed. Usually the sander doesn't eject sand with that much force, as they would prefer the sand remain on the rail for the wheels to benefit from traction. Clean Rail was designed to blast wicked amounts of pressurized air down at the rail, to help remove rainwater, snow, leaves, any other debris that would cause the drives to lose adhesion to the rail.

    I've visited Tehachapi twice now - a great railfanning experience. As a civil engineer I was also impressed by the spiral. It occurs to me that current railroad practice has made a mistake - the trains are too long and heavy - yes I know it improves productivity per employee (engineers and conductors) - but is track maintenance keeping up with the extra wear and tear?

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  Месяц назад +4

      And they've never run an 18'000 foot train over Tehachapi. Rowen is the shortest siding on the pass at 8,310', and they try to keep them no longer than that in case they need to hold them there. When you're up there and the trains are going 23mph, it makes them seem longer than they are when they're in the desert or the valley going 60 or 70. I've heard about the monsters out on the Transcon and the Sunset, but those rails don't care how long a train is. The train may care, but not the rails.

      @@Stefan_Boerjesson They do. Locomotives, rail cars, tracks switches, crossing gates, etc. are like anything else. They malfunction or break.
      When there is a derailment, it costs more money having to either reroute trains, or have them sitting for hours or even days waiting to pass by the site of the derailment. Plus they have to fix the ties and rails if they are torn up, and call in contractor who specializes in retailing cars if possible, plus buying new rail cars if they are damaged beyond repair, plus the cost of environmental clean up if any tank cars leak or diesel fuel if a locomotive is heavily damaged. Then there is the cost of whatever goods the train is carrying. Most likely insurance foots the bill.
      A big derailment can cost the railroad tens of millions of dollars, or even more if there are big fines and lawsuits.

      What's a BMP? There is one way to access this site, and they were using it. I guess that's as stabilized as was necessary! Thanks for checking it out!

    Looks like a quickie tamper pass. Regulated just to fill tamper holes. There is no time for Finnish work. But track speed is slow... so.

    • @MarkClayMcGowan
      @MarkClayMcGowan  Месяц назад

      Max speed is 23 anyway, so it's already slow!

    Too long long train in multi curves line plus grade 25%o, for good productivity but big risk of derail....Union Pacific is a prosperous company, why this risk ? Derail in Palestine for Norfolk Southern and big damages... in Europe, limit train loading is 3500 tonnes only. For me, (french) big perform all the days by the american railway workmen for driving this trains in Rocky Mountain ! friendly from France.

      Limiting freight to 3,500 tonnes here would jeopardize the supply chain. There are just too many people and too large a country. Derailments such as this are cleared quickly, and they were putting them on the ground when they did run shorter trains too. Thanks for checking it out!

    What was the worst doorbell that you ever had to work on?Do you remember or were the oldest is bad

      I assume your voice or auto correct changed derailment to doorbell! I've worked quite a few that caused a great deal of damage but thankfully none with loss of life. I wish I'd taken photos at them all, but I'm thinking of doing a slideshow video of the ones I have worked and have photos of.

      Dude. Really? Dynamic braking on a locomotive is used to help slow the train and keep it under control going downhill. Take a breath!
