Listening to this romantic essay of the foundation of the Original Trilogy, the Force, made me realize that the new movies are shit. It's not Rey that learns to follow the ways of the force but the force learns to obey Rey's command; this makes Rey the most spoiled and pandered brat in the universe. She is more selfish than selfless as much as Kylo Ren, but they just happen to be on opposing sides of a war.

True that means if she turns into a sith on the next film it'll be the best arc/twist in the series

    • @TheOneAndOnlyKurtNobrain

Unfortunately, the filmmaker had the chance in Last Jedi and chose to maintain her as protagonist in service of subverting the expectations of many theorists on how the new trilogy would turn out. I expect that Rey probably wont make a turn in 9, and that the next trilogy won't be a continuation of her story as she and Kylo are deeply connected to the Skywalker; the next trilogy is supposed to break away from the Skywalker arc for now.

@@TheOneAndOnlyKurtNobrain After I saw the first movie I thought the twist would be that it was a story of Kylo's redemption, after the last jedi I just kinda got disinterested and it seems like they just dropped all the threads from the previous movie

@@placer7412 100% agree with you. I'll still see 9 and probably the rest after that, but the anticipation has been soured. Honestly, Rogue One was the movie that started my disenchantment with the new Star Wars, especially when I felt like the only Star Wars fan on opening night that was severely disappointed at my theater; that also helped make my decision to not see Solo. Despite all this, I'm still kinda excited for the Mandalorian although I'll still going in with low expectations.

@@TheOneAndOnlyKurtNobrain It would have been like the irredeemable and incorruptible comic books, and those are great books.
For the uninitiated, they are companion books. Irredeemable is about a superman like character going from a hero to villain, and Incorruptible is about how that transformation caused one of his villains to seek redemption. Imagine if Kylo, after killing his father, eventually saw the error of his ways, and felt like he had to make it right. Imagine the drama you could get between him and Leia.

I really love the way you ended this one! I grew up admiring the "Jedi" and yearning to be one. We all have a choice in this life; to be selfish and materialistic, or to be move giving and living in the moment with appreciation of what we already have. I admit that one needs to take care of one's self first in order to take care of others but capitalism, standard business models and today's (or my environments) society are all set up to make the "dolla" regardless of the next person's position on whether or not they benefit from the transaction! It matters not! Profit becomes what matters. Detachment from relationships matters not. Only profit matters and that is a sickness in our society!

The sales were great, but not as great as episode 7, which is understandable because it was the first Star Wars movie after a long time, of course it will certainly have the best sale figures of all the new movies, even if episode 9 turns out to be the best Star Wars of them all, it won´t outsell episode 7. I believe that the comments on the internet also really distorts the image, as most people who liked the new movies won´t discuss online, while people who hate something (not just Star Wars) will usually be the largest group of people on the internet. @bizkitgto Its daft. This video just solidifies the Last JEdi's story. Its really quite funny. See my comment above. It aslo explains why Luke acts at the end. He move sback to being Selfless again instead of wallowing in selfish self pity. Rey is the key to that swing back for Luke. Her naive belief in good and her hope solidified by her upbringing on Jakku is what causes Luke to selflessly sacrifice himself to save his sister and the others from complete destruction.
hell teh fact rey doens't actually get trained in using teh force is not even important cos her naive belief in herself and her friends is what makes her force powers so powerful and makes her so quick to learn. On top of that her hopeful nature means she will never give in to teh dark side despite the temptation. Jakku hardened her to that possibility when it shoudl have openned the door.
What I liek about this video is that it just shows how good the Last jedi is at understanding Luke and his path and how Rey sits in his path.

I think you are right about the vaguely Eastern philosophical underpinnings in Star Wars. I say vaguely because it is Eastern in the same way New Age philosophy is: Westernized. I've taken an opposite point of view in life. I prefer Dostoevsky's or Tarkovsky's more Christian philosophy. That complete attachment to this material world and its people is far more important. (Not that there isn't a time for surrender.) That “Every one is really responsible to all men for all men and for everything.” That our emotions, our commitments (attachments) are what make it possible to love. That is only on the path of suffering that we learn with humility.
If we follow Luke's detachment we must then ignore the danger of his sister in a sort of cosmic it-is-all-illusion sort of way. But is it? If this life isn't an illusion then we'd better get busy being responsible, which is attachment. Or as Charles Williams described Dante's vision as the via positiva, the road of affirmation of the things of this world, not as a be all end all, but in having value in themselves.
The other problem I have with the Force as a spiritual concept is this: One can essentially live in this world, as fan boys and girls do, virtually nowadays, separate from material possessions, except for a source of transmission, and seemingly be detached from material reality. And yet be completely compulsive and possessive of the Star Wars universe. And thus ignore the material and spiritual realities in this world. Check out the forums in a Star Wars gaming site in relationship to this.
So yes. There is a spirituality in Star Wars. But is it true? Nevertheless, thought provoking. Thanks.

The reason Luke Skywalker is the best character is because he maintains a balance between the world and his spirituality. He doesn't neglect the evil in the world in order to fight the evil within himself, compared to Obi Wan we might find Luke to be a relatively selfish person. Luke has worldly attachments, he cares about his friends and his family and the galaxy at large and that is demonstrated through his alignment with the Rebellion.
In The Last Jedi, Luke acknowledges the need for this balance. In a deleted scene, his student Rey sees what seems to be a raiding party attacking innocents, and Luke tells her that a Jedi of old would do nothing to stop the natural way of things and would allow the raiding party to take what they want without hindrance. She rejects his advice and she runs to stop the pillaging with her weapon drawn before she discovers that it's only a small festival with music and celebration. Rey confronts Luke and is upset with his deception, and this is where he tells her that this is the true spirit of what the galaxy needs, not a "failed husk of a religion".

      Brilliant analysis.

  • @yanukh
    @yanukh 5 лет назад +3

The Problem with the Jedi Order was that it was only the other extreme. In the prequels, they tried to shut down emotional binding of their pupils, forbidding them to love (Anakin and Padme) and seeing their loved ones (Anakin and his mother). They dealt in absolutes, as Obi-Wan would say. Luke in TLJ knew this, I really liked the scene where he talked about the Jedi flaws. I really hope they expand on this in the 9th episode.
As it looked like in episode 8, with old Lukes development, the Yin-Yang-imagery of the first Jedi and Reys training and how she views the force, also all the focus on balance and NOT just the light and dark side, Rey will be going down the path of balance, not fearing the dark side like the Jedi did, and also embracing the light side. She will be more in balance than previous Jedi, I believe, maybe she will even become a Gray Jedi in episode 9. If J.J. Abrams is brave enough to continue this path on which Rian Johnson went on. Maybe he will just make another episode 6, which would be a little bit of a disapointment. It was okay for episode 7, the start of a new trilogy after a long time, to ride the nostalgia train and be like episode 4, but for the other movies it is time to move on and try out new things, also finally ending the Skywalker stories to make something entirely new in the next trilogy.
The force lore is on of the reasons I really like TLJ, despite some of its flaws (e.g. I thought the casino plot was too long just to show the flaws of the rebellion, the light side and the naivity of those who believed in its pureness, like Rose did; also the degradation of a certain villain to have more comedy in it). This movie really added to the lore while having one of the most interesting villains in my opinion, Kylo Ren.
It would be really nice to see you analyse the force in the new movies, even if you don´t like them. There´s much to talk about.

      @philippkoch662 4 года назад

@@RealDelusionalPictures The essay on 1408 was really great! As much as I like this video, I liked the 1408 much more.
Allow me to explain why. In my opinion, the `Dark` and the `Light` side isn't as clear and fixed as they are suggested in the 4th and 5th film.
EVERY Jedi, and even Sith has both sides in him. Its a choice, rather than a given trait. And both ideologies, have good sides and bad sides, from a certain point of view.
I think the Jedis are not as good as they suggest, when you look at the prequels.
The Jedis get some girls and boys and divide them from their caregivers, to ´brainwash´ them. You could argue that's a very evil thing to do. This works as long as the Jedi is young enough, but it clearly becomes a problem for Anakin, who is to old to be `brainwashed` as its mentioned by Joda.
Also, they forbid him to engage in relationships other then with other (brainwashed) Jedis , he has to suppress his emotions, even the `good` ones, like loving and caring. That forces him to hide his feelings from the Jedis, which divides him even further from the temple.
Furthermore, he is a afraid and in grieve about his mother, but Yoda just tells him to `deal with it´. Then, the Jedi counsel doesn't trust him enough to make him a part of them, and send him to spy after Palpatine (Sidious).
Why didn't the Jedis rescue his mother? They have enough resources and more then enough time to do that, they didn't even allow Anakin to save her. My guess is nobody understands cause they are all brainwashed and dont give a crap about their own parents. When he does try to safe her, he comes to late, and she dies... and he learns what happens when he neglect his positive emotions (caring). His emotions turn into negative emotions (rage and anger). That makes his wish to save Padme even stronger.
Sidious makes use of the failures of the Jedi. He is the only one that seems to listen, that seems to give a crap about Ani, and the only one that gives him a feeling about caring for him. Because of that he is able to place the fear into his head, of losing his beloved wife.
Palpatine plays with Anakin, yes, but he makes use of the Jedi failure. When the Jedis had saved his mother his fear of loosing Padme wasn't so strong. When he could tell the Jedis about his love for Padme, they were able to help him deal with his emotions. But they fail at it, making it very easy for Palpatine to deal with Anakin. Palpatine seems to know much more about human emotions then the Jedi do at this stage of the story.
The failure of Anakin leads ultimately to the downfall of the hole Jedi temple. But it brilliantly shows why Anakin thinks "The Jedis are evil". He hates them because of suppressing their positive emotions and to are not allowed to engage with other people, what leads to negative emotions.
Now lets look to Luke. He doesn't follow the Jedi way. He isn't able to sacrifice his friends for the greater good. He tries to rescue them, and loses his arm because of that. It seems that it was wrong, but his friends survived. Its possible that Luke had became like Anakin.... full of grieve and rage and anger when Vader was able to kill all of his friends. But he didn't choose the Jedi way. And, ironically, that makes him a ´real´Jedi. After all, Luke is engaging in real relationships, with people that are not brainwashed, he even feels love for Leia, either when he cant place why he loves her yet.
Its getting even more clear when he strikes down Vader. He looks at his own arm, seeing that he is becoming his father.
When he had listen to Yoda, he hadn't loose his hand, and didn't make that decision, possibly leading to become the new apprentice of Sidious. But because of his choice, to not listen to Yoda, he is able to insist the urge to kill his father, reminded by the time when his father struck him down. (Something that he wouldn't have experienced when he had listen to Yoda)
The insight of Vader, that his son isn't actually an "emotionless robot" like Obi Wan or Yoda, that he does love his father and that it doesn't matter on `which side he is` turns Vader away from the dark side once again and letting Anakin fullfill his prophecy, to kill Palpatine. But he wasnt able to do that if he hadnt engage the relationship with Padme, and he had not the help of his son.
I do not think on version is better then the other, I just think they are more ways to inter-prate it. And thats why the first 6 Star Wars films are great. It allowes a big philosophical discussion about what is wrong and right. Two people can see it and have totally different insights, and they both are right, from a certain point of view of course.
May the the high ground be with you!

It’s shocking the new Star Wars films are now so reductive and dumb level of now a “Mary Sue”. The reason why Star Wars 1977 works is because Is feeds on deeper levels of the human experience dark vs light through the hero’s journey. We all know this on a deeper level why we are here on earth on our own hero’s journey to be good and fight the darkness and leave a legacy.

From my perspective Vader was tempted by the Dark Side because he felt powerless to control his own destiny. He grew angry (the path to the Dark Side) because things were taken away from him that he could not control. But his goals up until Revenge of the Sith were quite selfless, he wanted to stop Padme from dying, a thought which tormented him in his dreams. Probably something that pulled on the scars of being raised a slave and losing his Mother. Both of which another example of his lack of control. The Jedi, at the point of the final film from the prequels, were almost a dictatorship, that did not allow the Dark Side to exist. Which led to the force becoming un-balanced. Anakin, was manipulated by the Dark Side, but his intentions were mostly positive. He understood that there was knowledge to be gained from the Dark, which suggests balance. The Jedi council restricted that knowledge and he became bitter as they stood in his way. He then found solace in his decisions being made for him by the Emperor after all the things he cared for were taken from him, turning him into more of a puppet than someone seeking power and glory. By the time he becomes Vader he has given up his will to choose his own path and has settled into conformity. Only in Return of the Jedi do we see him make a decision for himself again, by killing the Emperor. His conformity was not necessarily obedience. More lack of direction. As everything he aimed for in life is now gone or pointless.
There is a philosophical argument that discusses conformity in Nazi Germany stating how people just need to be told what to do, and don't really think about the morality, as long as they have purpose, I forget the details. But I think its kind of like that.

Awesome video, and given the conclusion, I’d love to see your take on The Last Jedi, be it positive or negative. Personally, I love the way the film tears down at the flaws of the Jedi order while building the concept of Jedi back up with new philosophies on what it can mean to be a Jedi. Some see as a downright condemnation of everything the Jedi stood for, but with Luke’s statement that he will not be the last Jedi - as well as Yoda’s insistence of the theme that failure breeds new forms of wisdom - I simply can’t disagree more.

Not to forget, that the force is literal magic. And magic is this direct animistic, more spiritual than rational kind of perceived technology. Like high priest casting rain then versus meterologist today. And the light side uses a buddhistically passive approach to it, whereas the Sith try to actively engage with their only great practial power that also just happens to be an ultimative connection to nature, making them one with it by default and therby this century-lasting debate since illumination ages obsolete just like that!

*+Real Dimensional Pictures Your analysis of both extremes in the Light & Dark Side is why I personally lean more toward the Grey Jedi at least in concept. Granted, their ideology is definitely flawed, their history shady, and their practice risky.*
It's a reckless path comparable to dipping a toe into the Dark Side, sampling the forbidden fruit in order to better learn from it as it were. As obviously evil as Palpatine is written/characterized, I wholeheartedly agree with him on these quotes:
*"Good is a point of view. If one is to understand the great mystery, one must study all its aspects, not just the dogmatic, narrow view of the Jedi. If you wish to become a complete and wise leader, you must embrace a larger view of the Force."*
If the classic aim of studying the Force is seeking balance and through it spiritual enlightenment/paradise, then, by that very logic, one shouldn't blindly subscribe to either extreme. Yes, the Dark Side's power is inherently corruptible.
It is infectious, seductive, and addictive like any drug, vice, or general over-indulgence out of base-desires (greed, lust, possessiveness, etc). And yet, one could argue that you cannot understand the full picture without branching experience.
This is not to suggest of course that one should indulge in all the world's pleasures & vices in order to more thoroughly educate themselves on their nature, but isolating yourself from it to the point of ignorance can be detrimental as well.
That's exactly what contributed to the Jedi's downfall. While Lucas' over-simplification of these themes for sake of making the story & characters easier to resonate with succeeds in its intended goal, it fails to make a fair case for moderation.
It is only through Qui-Gon's character in *TPM,* EU content on Mace Windu, Ahsoka in the CG *Clone Wars-Rebels* series, and the most recent film *The Last Jedi* that the Jedi philosophy has been put under a critical lens (poorly imo).
Even then, this gives way to a counter-productive continuation of extremism in which *TLJ's* spiritually demoralized Luke Skywalker embraces the opposite extreme of denouncing the Jedi ideals completely instead of evolving them.
This apprehensiveness to re-examine an ideology's benefits while learning from its failures out of fear that your new interpretation will once again end in failure is in itself another form of extremism by taking oneself out of the equation.
I have a feeling that this may likely lead to an attempt at introducing the Grey Jedi's philosophy into the movies. Overall, I find true balance to be the challenge of navigating the forest between two paths rather than choosing one or the other.
*It's a far tougher journey few Force-wielders manage, you couldn't build a school or Order upon it. And yet, it is precisely BECAUSE this "middle path" is harder that I believe it's worthwhile for those suited to it, to study the Force as a whole.*

Until this comment, I could not understand why God allowed the Star Wars mythology to be abused so much to the point where it has been effectively destroyed. Now I get it. Too many people got too sucked into the mythology, such that it stopped being a benefit to them and became a hindrance. Since our enlightenment is more important to Him than anything else in this universe, in face is the entire reason why anything exists, therefore He decided the Star Wars myth had to go. Hopefully He will bring us something else to help us become aware.

love this video essay. one critique i give is instead of compounding these concepts into a dense composition, i would break them into different parts. it adds volume to your content, but also it makes it more palatable, more easily digested. you cover a lot in one video, enough content in here for probably a whole video series. having it broken up into segments that are devoted to a single theme. i would recommend watching the dialogues between jordan peterson and sam harris. i think you touch on the spiritual issue that star wars was trying to inform the masses on. peterson and harris discuss at great lengths the utility of spirituality that, i think, connects in great part to our identity, our values and what eventually becomes culture. i am on the side that believes that spirituality and good narratives inspire moral action. which is lacking in our modern day in favor of expediency and pleasure.

The question I have, and the sequels seems to be sloppily exploring, is how do we combine the apparent need for balance between the light side and the dark side with the obvious inherent goodness of the light side? I think the only real way to satisfactorily resolve this tension is to show how undergoing the journey of the light side enables you to resolve the practical, tangible concerns that fill the minds of those who follow the path of the dark side.

    This channel is so underrated...
Yesterday I went to see Parasite and I really don't get the hype, then I watched some analysis videos but they couldn't convince me.
Isn't it a very basic message against capitalism where no one really is the parasite with some references to high and low and the smell as trigger? Can anyone tell me what Im missing?

I disagree that the 8 right paths equate to the light side.
Complete light is complete selflessness and without self, one ceases to exist and cannot follow the middle path, nor can they be of assistance to others.
Right path therefore, would seem to equate more to middle path rather than strictly light.
Middle path knows that there is a time to fight, but one should seek to cause as little harm possible and just get the job done.
If we were all either strictly light or strictly dark, we’d all cease to be.

Havent watch this Video yet but the force stands for the laws of attraction. The idea the use ur mind to make things happen. The way i always took it. Also the idea the create energy Thats where the good and evil come from positive and negative energies that we create ive never seen it as having to do with God

The existence of God is not a concept. Also, in the actual concept of balancing "righteousness" & "selfishness" in one's life, as w/ all things, the Bible puts it better than that fat, obsequious slug Flukas ever could.
Ecclesiastes 7:15-20 "All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.
Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?
Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?
It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.
Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.
For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not."

Lucas knew and felt what he was describing in his movies. Through the dark side that tries to eat hearths of us all he was corrupted and sold his deep spirituality for meaningless treasures. He was corrupted.
It might be he did not see this coming (dark side clouds our judgement) but once it was clear he should have tried to redeem himself. He should remake The Last Jedi and restore the balance. Is he too far gone?

You miss a lot about star wars. For startes Anakin was created through a form of artifical creation, like cloning, which was used both by the emperor to make his clone army, and to extend the emperors own life. Each time the emperor palpatine used up a body because of his overwhelming dark side ( and lack of mastery of the true grey middle way, thus being corrupted) Palpatine would emerge in a secret lab of cloning, in a younger version of himself with most if not all his memories before that point that were uploaded via lightspeed link from anywhere he had previously been at in the galaxy. Anakin was the product of Palpatine using his former dark masters knowledge to try to fully cheat death so he would no longer rely upon clone bodies, because the more the emperor used them, the faster they aged and turned into dead husks. Anakin then, regardless of christian narratives or ancient egyptian ones of miraculous conceptions, because all conception is miraculous in a so so kinda way, anakin begins a new pure bloodline atuned to the force. They are powerful therefore, including his children, Luke and Leia. But they are put in a sort of force coma, so they are not detected during the long years of purging by the empire of force sensitives. Eventually many many years later, the emperor remerges, and luke, thinking he can trick the resurrected palpatine, joins him, but is turned ot the dark side almost fully. Eventually Luke repents, and having experienced both the light and dark side, now has the power nad ability to grow from both sides in the true way of the Grey Siders. After time he tries to teach others, but empires rise and fall, and many forget all the wars of clones, and droids and siths vs jedi as they have numerous times of the millennia. With time the children of Luke and Leia grow, and have children. Some even turn to the dark side, and are destroyed by their very siblings after years of war and ambition gone wrong. And in the end, The skywaler legacy leaves a few descendents that, over a century later, fall to a single great great great GREAT GRRRREEEAT grand son of the bloodline, and things just keep on going. Because we are less than grains of sand in the ocean of space that is existence. No big deal.

So where are those higher ideals in Star Wars movies being made today?

    • @kudosbudo
      @kudosbudo 5 лет назад +1

The ideals are that naive hope and belief tempered by difficulty will lead to a better future. This is Rey. Tempered by her upbringing on Jakku. If you look at the force awakens theres a scene where she looks at the old lady scrubbing rubbish clean. She sees a possible future path there. her nature of hope and belief leads her to help BB8. On a planet where beign selfish means survival, she gives her time to help selflessly. Thats what gets her off the planet and onto teh path of being a Jedi.
She sticks her nose in against injustice. She is a very typical hero character. thsi give steh impresison she is flawless but we see she makes silly mistakes because her weakness is she is naive. but again thats also her main strength, that naive hope she can either do good or help people or somethign good will happen.
The force simply manifests that hope into truth (lifting the rocks at the end of Last Jedi)
Its really quite good. I relaly wish folk would not get hung up on Rey being a different type of hero to Luke. I think thats the main issue. people simply wanted another Luke when we got a different type of main hero. What they should have done is not bothered to compare them and taken them as is. As a result only see Rey as being "more powerful than Luke!" ignoring their differnet upbringings and inital outlooks on life (Luke wnet from negative to learning to have hope as shown in this vido hhur hur hur, rey goes from being full of hope despite everything to being constantly having her faith hope or belief tested).
Actually you know in some ways rey is kind alike Guts from Berserk. Except we simply don't see Reys early life.
And that unwaivering hope thats weather constant failure or tests is what make sLuke swing back to being the selfess Jedi Baddass he forgot he was.
Thats why I like teh new films.

In the "Enemy Within," Kirk has his "dark and light sides" split. Kirk can't operate as only the "good" Kirk. I believe this what is the "balance" of SW is referring to. Your example of Luke throwing away his lightsaber is wrong...as Luke was wrong to do that. That's tantamount to a country eliminating their defense budge. Nor do i believe that's Jesus' point of turning the other cheek. It means "balance" We must protect ourselves and people we love (note the Jedi master the lightsaber) The point is NOT killing Vader but turning him to the light side. Vader was imbalance. We need to protect ourselves but show mercy, forgiveness and kindness

Nope. The force is the plot, to which everyone is a slave to. Light and dark side is an illusion, if anything a metaphor for the protagonists and antagonist as without conflict there is no plot.

See I disagree with Lucas on at least one point , That the younger generation represents an idealistic righteous fortitude maybe self righteous and definitely naïve and this is supposed that this is a constant force that every generation goes thru a younger intuned generation fighting the mistakes and screwups of its fathers ? How is that I thought they started off as Idealistic righteous forks or something, lol. Truth is it is the opposite at least in the generations ive been a part of, this country after world war II finally reached its Nirvana or the beginnings of it. Peace prosperity gratitude marriage home life , these are bad ? Well the 50's & 60's brought us prosperity and a baby boom, family , Godly morals and what some describe as the ideal . Yet I think someone hated these ideals, communists, secret societies, those who follow the evil dark force . Obviously they assassinated JFK which started a insidious transformation to the other side of this dark force. (IMO)

I would also say that Luke and his father end up in the same boat, Darth Vader takes the dark road that leads to his own personal hell, but remember in the end he was redeemed in death or somehow?? Luke on the other hand seeks the light the good side of the force yet he is taught by that little green leftist liberal so what really is happening is Luke is being brainwashed by these Old Ones also just like His dad was fooled by the dark scythe Luke is fooled by the same force just wrapped up in a different suit of armor.
