  • We love mid-late 70s Beach Boys! These sometimes overlooked albums feature some amazing songs and lots of the same magic that make the Beach Boys the spectacular band that they are.
L.A. (Light Album) is a really interesting listen - released in 1979, and featuring very little Brian - you've got Carl, Dennis, Al and Bruce pulling together a collection of individual songs. Although it has a somewhat fractured feel, still, there are some really wonderful songs here.
Specifically lovely moments come from Carl and Dennis - wish there were more of their songs on here. We do have concerns with a certain 10 minute and 51 second song on side 2. But otherwise this is a surprisingly strong album that regardless of any extremely long disco songs, is really fun to listen to.
    Thanks for watching!

Think that L.A. (Light Album) is comparable to the Sunflower album , from 1970. Sunflower was the band's first album for Warner Brothers, and L.A. (Light Album) was the band's first album for C.B.S/Caribou. For both, the band used stronger songs from the band members. The disco version of "Here Comes The Night" was Bruce's idea ( who himself had returned to the group, after quitting in 1972). Think the song sticks out like a sore thumb from the style of the other songs on the album. "Lady Lynda" became "Lady Liberty" (after Al's divorce from his wife, Lynda). "Baby Blue" is a beautiful Dennis ballad, mostly sung by Carl. Favorite song on the album is "Angel Come Home", written by Carl and sung by Dennis. Wished the disco version of "Here Comes The Night" had been released only as a single, but kept off the album. Their Americathon movie song, "It's A Beautiful Day" could have been substituted, and would have fit better with the other songs.

Really glad to see this review. Based on some of your other reviews, I reluctantly :-) started listening to post Holland beach boys. This is by far my favorite post Holland album with the exception of that disco crap. One nice thing about digital is you can delete the track and move on which is what I did. Sumahama feels like it could have been part of a soundtrack to a 1950s Disney movie. Thanks again for these wonderful reviews. Always enjoy your perspective.

it's their last good album, almost a classic. "Good Timing" is like the last gasp of glorious harmonies with all the original members alive - i love "shortnin bread" this is a good album

A good discussion. This is one of those albums by the boys I have yet to dig into. You managed to paint it in a more positive light than some other reviewers and give it credit where credit is due. I do know Good Timin' and agree that its a classic.

I like all the songs on this including HCTN which is fun and actually sounds fantastic on vinyl on a good system. My fav tracks are Baby Blue and Lady Lynda

I think it's a criminally under rated album. Here Comes I didn't hate, but yes I agree - the album would have been better without it. Sumahama is the one I didn't particularly like. I loved Shortenin' Bread! Feels right to me as the album closer.

I've always thought if you took the best from MIU and the best from L A, you would have a masterpiece.
