The capability was there to produce pretty clean sounding albums as far back as the 60s. But with metal in the 80s and early 90s, there were lots of bands churning out tin-can sounding records due to either budget (thrash, death, black metal) or stylistic preference (black metal).
Modern metal is still figuring out how to not sound clean, so albums like this are fresh compared to digital/overly compressed big budget albums ie. Gojira
Make yourself a favor and listen to The Spectral Sorrows of Edge of Sanity, recorded in fucking 1993. That's one of the best sounding metal albums ever made!
I first heard Bolt Thrower on the 1994 Earache sampler Earplugged. I've come back to this album after almost 30 years, and fuck me its incredible. What have I missed. Nothing sounds quite like it. So heavy, so monolithic. A rolling tsunami of sound. Death metal made in the gravity well of Jupiter. So much weight. Absolutely crushing. Sun O))), Electric Wizard, Crow Bar, Earth, Om etc. All good bands. But this is now my favorite new listen when I need massive sounds.
Tried to persuade the the missus to let me name my first born son Bolt Thrower many years ago. She wasn’t having any of it, not even as a middle name. Turned out that he would’ve loved it as a middle name when I told him about. Kids make you so proud!
The sound is awesome, there were two albums that year produced by Colin Richardson with this majestic, heavy and rich sound, this and Napalm Death's 'Fear, Emptiness, Despair'. Never ever has there been anything close to this sharpness, richness of heavy metal sound. Too bad, the late band Memoriam allowed their new album to be squashed and compressed.
the 80,s and 90,s had the best ever period for metal on all levels, now im 42, it feels like yesterday that I was a young whipper snapper head banging to all these great bands. now I am 42 I still headbang today and would put most of these young generation bangers to shame.
