BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- Nashville recording artist and Brunswick County native Justin Johnson, 33, has been called an “American master.” The guitar player can trace his musical influences as far back as you can go in American music, to Delta blues, gospel and slave field songs. His latest instrumental album entitled, “If Walls Could Talk,” is a soulful study in the slide guitar stylings and musical diversity that have put Johnson on Nashville’s radar. Growing up in Southport, Johnson would try to make music on anything he could find around the house. Usually that was an old guitar with just one string. Later he learned piano and played trumpet and baritone in the South Brunswick High School marching band. Johnson’s passion for music was stoked by high school band teacher Buddy Gudger.
Justin now has over 1.1 million YT subscribers and is destined for even bigger things. He's almost singlehandedly bringing roots and blues back to the consciousness of America.
I'm a 71 yr old guitar player here in England. Danny gatton is my favourite player of all time, but I love this kids playing. now I have two favourite players of all time. thank you.
John James McCartney Gatton and not Johnny Hiland as well? This guy is excellent and imaginative, but Gatton and Hiland are otherworldly! Oh ya...IMHO. Cheers!
Amazing ! Feels like a guitar string vibrating ! Rythm and sound make sense to his interpretation, his sound is so crazy ! I love it ! At 01:20 ... whow ! What a talent ! A gift through soul !
Jeff Underwood Lol....My thoughts exactly. This guy is a treasure. I suppose all it really means is that in thirteen years I'll be this good.....plus the 25 years of little-to-show-for-it experience I already have. Holy crap I'll be awesome. Daydream over.
A Walk in the park for him as anyone that knows his playing & have been to his channel knows he's an amazing talent at all styles & very versed when it comes all guitars ,amps pedals & everything in between. A funny guy with gobs of talent & one fine craftsman in his own right. I feel sorry for those guys in front of him that just stare , no foot tapping no smiles no feeling ,makes wonder why they even at this . Justin is only showing a tiny bit of just what he can play & if he didn't win this hands down i sur would love to see & hear who beat him . I seriously doubt is he lost this one he's way too good to not be first in line .
I first saw him in a RUclips JBG video tribute to Chuck Berry, as soon as I discovered he had music available for sale I bought everything he'd released. He sure is a wonderful talent :-)
This player, Mr. Justin Johnson, is an unknown jem. I've checked out some of his other YT videos and ya need to pay homage as he plays his heart out! He has an awesome gift!!! Smokin Cool Bro, just smokin 🎼🎵🎶
Had no idea he was a fellow Tarheel. He's a neighbour, so to speak....Orange County and Chatham County (me) right next to Alamance County (Snow Camp). Been following his channel and had no idea. What a small world!
blewsguitar you sure got that right !! Hell of a musician. Tried to get Summer Fest in Milwaukee to book him but all I got back was a robo reply to have my agent contact them.
I feel like Justin picked up right where Johnny Winter left off! Everything from his playing to his demeanor to how he dresses. Lots of bell bottoms and turquoise jewelry hahaha cool hats. Everything to carry that rock n roll attitude. And when he gets a cigar box guitar cranked through some fuzz and an amp he crushes the hill country and that drone like delta sound that’s so thick and sludgy and then turn around and play a jump blues, rockabilly, or Texas Roadhouse blues!!!
The man sure isn't unknown anymore. Long live Justin!
If I was there to compete and saw Justin, I would leave my guitar in the case. He’s a beast . Well played Brother
What only one comment since 2012. Justin Johnson has to be one of the best unknown guitarist at this time.

For 13 years playing at that time he had a great understanding of how blues should be played. incredible musician.

ross mcgarry Oh, great comment! Yes, Justin, we LOVE the shovel!
ross mcgarry / hell I still wanna see him play a car bumper, if not a pickup truck bumper will do.
Sure, this kind of bumper could be directly plugged into an amp without requiring the addition of a guitar pickup :)

Only 13 years of playing... I see an amazing blend of Steve Vai, Tommy Emmanuel and Sungha Jung happening for the Blues genre of guitar here.
JJ master!
