We have a pair at our porch. We had a pair of robins and about a day after they left a finch family started moving in to the vacant Robin's nest. It so neat because it's right outside my kitchen window sink!!!

So exciting when a bird builds it's nest in your yard or next to your house, but so sad when they all leave 😢

I live in Ohio, and I get tons of these guys at my feeder. They really like the "cardinal" mixes, i.e. safflower and black oil sunflower seeds.

I had never seen a red house finch before, until I decided to turn my yard into a bird oasis. I live in Texas, so it gets pretty hot and I see them panting with their little beaks open because they are overheating. I put a large pan of shallow water out as a bathing station for them, and I fill it with fresh, cool water twice a day. I also give them distilled drinking water and scatter seeds over my carport (they live in a stump that leans by my carport) a few times a day so they get their fill. I saw the parents and 3 babies on a suet feeder a few days ago and was shocked by the beauty of them! Today I was sitting out under my carport smoking, and the male landed on the ground just a few feet away from me. He was so beautiful, and very inquisitive. I'm pretty sure he watches me give food and water to help them out, and he's probably wondering "what the heck is this big creature with food dropping from its hands?" I got some beautiful high-res photos and I'll cherish them always. I also got a cute video of his whole family just enjoying the food and bath station. I watch their activity like a hawk, because a big fox squirrel destroyed a bluebird nest and a wren nest in the same location. I caught her on the stump chewing the head off a baby wren, while the parents flew around, screaming plaintively while their babies were methodically killed and chewed apart. I tried to scare the squirrel away, but idiots at the park across the street from my house feed them when they're babies because they're cute. They've come to associate humans with food, and have no fear whatsoever. She actually lunged at me when I approached, and made some weird crazy squirrel alarm call. It was creepy and horrifying. After the lunge, she made a move to jump and bite me! I had to back off at that point, but quickly returned with a rifle and avenged the wrens. I had to cull all of the ''tame'' squirrels on my property, as they were killing all my birds in their nests! Watch out for squirrels. They may seem cute and innocuous, but they'll resort to carnivorous behavior and aggression towards humans depending on the season. Since the installation of the treat/bathing station, along with a ton of feeders of every type, my simple little yard has become a hub for wild birds. I've seen as many of 6 of them at a time on a single feeder, and I have over 10 feeders! It's amazing. The squirrel thing was pretty jarring though. I don't like to kill them, but it's necessary. The neighbors cats will be next, if they don't heed my warnings and keep their felines in their houses or on their property. Birds only! I love my house finches! I'm like their security guard/butler at this point, lol!

Just get a heavy duty water pistol for use on the cats. It'll save on ammo costs and cats.

@@edblake1779 I had to shoot the cat because it attacked me, trying to get indoors to rip into my aviary of exotic finches. After exhausting all humane methods of deterrence (including trapping) and got my neighbors harassing me and trying to extort the $150 shelter fee from me, I was done fucking around. The cat staged a standoff with me at my front door one night, trying to dart past my legs to get into my house and kill my birds. It bashed and clawed my windows every night until one window pane literally came out of the frame. When I made a shooing motion with my arm, the evil thing whipped its paw up and slashed the hell outta my arm with its claws. At that point, I was in full rage-mode. Went round the other side of my house with my air rifle and paralyzed the cat with a shot to the spine, and as it was dragging its limp back end across my lawn in a desperate bid to seek shelter under my house via a hole it clawed into my crawlspace boards, I jogged up, pinned it down with my boot heel, and shot it in the face. I did nature a great service, as domestic cats are a horrible blight on the environment and should be eradicated completely.
