Then some people got mad Yoda and Palpatine who in their mind I think had evolved past the need for them since they were seen more as wizards rather than knights and attacked that line in particular.
I always took "this weapon is your life" as in it's a service weapon and defense tool. Just like in the Dredd 2012 movie. Losing the pistol is supposed to be an "instant fail" for New Judges in probabtionary period.

The force is not a superpower, it is a life style. The force is not limitless either, a Jedi needs to stay in constant focus to use it and can become fatigue. That is why a lightsaber is crucial to kept that Jedi alive in combat or perhaps but the Jedi enough time to collect themeselves.
I'd say the light saber is not just the symbol of a Jedi (and of a Sith as well) but also an indicator of the discipline and skill it took the wielder to learn to master it. The question regarding the Jedi's taking their Padawans into combat is a fascinating one. I think it would be better explored in a book.
Everything in Star Wars is better explored in the books, the problem is that we want the general audience to unlearn their stupid misconceptions about the Jedi, not get them confirmed by the Acolyte.
Another good support for the first question is the arcin the clone wars where Ahsoka loses her lightsaber and gets taken by someone with not the best intentions
The lightsaber is like their gun and their badge rolled into one. Imagine if a cop went to the bad part of town, and lost both their gun and their badge while they were there.
I think it has to do with the bonding of the Kyber Crystal over the Lightsaber itself per se. The Lightsaber that houses the Kyber Crystal, is an extension of the Jedi and their connection to The Force in a sense in a physical manifestation.
What would the Jedi and Sith be without them? What would Star Wars be without them? I just wish they were utilised better, especially in Kenobi and Ahsoka.
While trained in martial arts and military, we are taught that your mind and a cool head is your best weapon. Although in the Infantry we were told that our rifle was our life but are well trained to use other weapons and unarmed defense techniques. I found that line in Episode 2 a bit heavy handed but it's Star Wars!! Do your thang Brother Obi Wan! Lol Great video as always Brother Thor!
That AOTC scene always reminded me of Full Metal Jacket. “This is my rifle. There are many like it but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life…” So I just took it as indoctrination for the sake of indoctrination
It's very likely since the Jedi were based on the Samurai. During the Edo period, the Samurai had forsaken active lives of violence and instead became courtiers, their swords a symbol of station rather than skill. It could be that Lucas meant the lightsaber to fulfill a similar role for the Jedi.
I like the representative lightsaber=Jedi, and "no one can kill a Jedi." And then we meet Grievious. It's one of the reason's he was so shocking, initially. (20+ years have numbed us to that I think.) As for the body transfer piece, I do like that. It's a supremely rare ability, with some fairly high requirements. Dark Empire had a well reasoned argument. And I loved how the Bane Trilogy left it as a possible question. The less said of Ep 9, the better. My biggest quibble of it is: this is a man, the most powerful Sith Lord in a 1,000+ years, the strategic mastermind who orchestrated the Clone Wars.... and having the foresight to continue into clones of himself; ... and the first thing he does is announce that he's back before his ships are ready nor have even achieved orbit? Let alone a multi-pronged surprise attack designed to spike fear and hatred across the galaxy, strengthening the Darkside even further? ....I'm gonna stop that rant here. Trying to stay with "less siad better." /chuckle cheers all. I'm enjoying your eclectic mix of videos
In Star Wars there actually is an order of Jedi who use blasters - called the Teepo Paladins and Grey Paladins, the former immerse themselves within the force, while the latter try to use the Force more minimally and try to focus on more Technical skills. They were excommunicated by the Jedi due to their stance but I really like e’m.
To bad Disney made light sabers a joke. Also I agree on the comment you made about padawans. I also think the jedi is giving them a chance to fight against the horrors that war will bring instead of being another helpless victim to it.
Hey Thor, I would point to The Clone Wars Cartoon part 2 (?) where Luminara is watching over Bariss as the later builds her lightsaber. That code is the answer to this episodes question, but I do like how you went into a sort of deep dive.
The essence transfer isn't an issue by itself the problem is them just bringing palpatine back randomly. The dark empire books had a similar thing but it wasn't horrible cuz they thought it out a bit more
Plus this was back when the EU was just Heir to the Empire, Splinter of the Mind’s Eye (which was a back-up sequel in case A New Hope failed) and the Marvel comics nobody remembers about except for the writers of the reference books and the makers of Star Wars Rebellion.
Hey Thor, I'd like to slightly push back on what you said about Lightsabers I think that the more down to earth practical reasons you mentioned are a far smaller part from the point of view of the jedi as to why Obi Wan is scolding Anakin in that scene. While I would assume that during the filming of AOTC George probably hadn't worked out the specific details of the force bond of a crystal to it's jedi, I would say that even if we go just a little bit further into the movie there is a line that seems to make it clear that Anakin would have been scolded just as bad if not worse, if instead of simply dropping it, Anakin's lightsaber were destroyed and unable to be used by another for nefarious purposes that could tarnish the jedi image That line being inside the droid factory on Geonosis when his lightsaber was cut in two. It is clearly inoperable and would not be able to be used by anyone to tarnish the image of the jedi. Infact Anakin even remained in possession of the greater portion of his hilt. Never the less he is disappointed in himself and worried about how Obi Wan will react when he learns about it. Rather notably, he does not seem particularly frighted for his life despite being shot at by hostile geonosians moments earlier Personally I believe that adding the context of that scene on Geonosis from the same movie is enough to conclude that, while a valid concern, the image of the jedi is not the sole or even the primary reason for which Anakin was earlier scolded for losing it and reminded that the weapon is his life. When we consider the added context from The Clone Wars I would say the bond to the kyber crystal being revered is the primary reason for Obi Wan's insistence that Anakin must not lose his lightsaber.
I'd argue what happens on Geonosis backs up what I'm saying in the video. Because Anakin doesn't actually care that the lightsaber itself was destroyed and that the crystal within was potentially ruined. He basically cracks a joke about how Obi-Wan is going to kill him, instead of there being any sort of emotional response to the loss of the saber.
Thanks for taking the time to respond I appreciate your thoughts. I think what you've said here explains why Obi Wan is constantly trying to hammer more importance and respect into Anakin's head. Anankin has developed a callousness towards his lightsaber, likely due to Obi Wan's lacking as teacher for Anakin. I still think the fact that it was destroyed rather than lost/confiscated the second time is still evidence of my position.
Hey Thor, when it comes to the alternated scenes in the OT, are there any that you like the change. For me, I like and prefer changing force ghost Anakin to look like Hayden. I always thought that the man standing next to force ghost Obi Wan and Yoda was Luke’s Uncle, which seemed off putting to me.( For those who would criticize me for that assumption, I was 6 or 7 when I saw the OT for the first time, so give me a break) I also like the added beak of the Sarlacc Pit. It makes it look like a living creature instead of looking like a big hole with “worms” coming out of it.
The idea comes very much from the samurai culture. Depending on which time period, the lon sword (Katana or Tachi) was seen as the samurais symbol of status. Wearing the long sword when he walked out of his home was more or less mandatory. He would leave it at the door when entering anothers home, but keep his short sword for self-defence. But that was courtesy towards the host. It was therefore very shameful for a samurai that feel on hard times and might have to pawn or sell his sword to get cold hard cash.
I like pancakes. They are the essence of great people. People are the great of essence. Essence is the people of great. Pancakes are people. They are all smashed together in one beautiful gold dish.
Hey Thor, Speaking of the idea of an animated show based on Luke and his order, do you think based on the point the canon is at now there’s any possibility we could see a show about his adventures after episode 6? If so how would you handle it, what would your over arching conflict for Luke, Han and Leia, and how would you integrate legends stories into it. I would love to see more of Luke in his prime on screen. Mando scratched the surface and I love that scene but I know they could show some amazing feats and story’s
While your analysis and responses are pretty spot on, I think that it would help a lot if you provide some examples of how the Star Wars universe and experts have dealt with these questions. Because these questions aren't new. Not by a long shot. Star Wars has been around for almost 50 years, and does anyone really think that they have come up with something new and original? Star Wars Insider used to (I don't know if it still does) answer fan questions that have been sent to them. Writers from adult novels to children's stories to graphic novels have looked deeply into Star Wars and made a multitude of stories that have dealt with the questions here. There are numerous sourcebooks that have compiled a variety of information to be used and appreciated.
well compare it to Knights of yor... what do you think of when someone says picture a medieval Knight, a Sword and Shining Armor... knights were basically trained to wear armor all their lives (they did not always do this though but most of the time, also armor was not always plate armor but mostly wore a coat of mail called a hauberk). BUT THE SWORD!!!! The Swords were the principle, first and most important weapon of knights. It was the weapon a knight received at his dubbing. it was a symbol of their devotion to God and Country, and a symbol of their servitude and commitment to proacting the realm. It was a core element to knighthood.
Hey Thor with all the fan love or sometimes hatred for Dave Filoni do you think we are going to get or even need another long-running animated series, similar to Clone Wars or sorta like Bad Batch? Do you think they would go away from Clone Wars with a new style and everything, maybe og trilogy or sequels related, or would you expect another Clone Wars spinoff?
Hey Thor, I have a thought on your oft-repeated question of where so many fans get their ideas about Jedi. It's George Lucas' choice of words. Why do people think the Jedi are supposed to be emotionless? What are the first words of the Jedi Code? "There is no emotion, there is peace." Why would people reading this think the ideal Jedi was anything BUT emotionless? He could have used a word like 'turmoil' or 'rage' or 'passion' or anything else that evokes extreme distress, but he chose a basic word like 'emotion', setting up 'peace' as its opposite. Why do people think the Chosen One's destiny was to destroy the Jedi (and along with that the idea that Gray Jedi are the ideal Jedi)? He was prophesied to bring 'balance' to the Force, not 'serenity' or 'health' or anything generally positive. He wrote 'balance', implying two or more vying tides that need to be evened out (and after clearly establishing the Dark and Light Sides in the OT). I don't think he was trying to say anything too convoluted or weird, but that he just didn't think through the misinterpretations his word choices might lead viewers to make. In an odd sense, it kind of validates Yoda's philosophy of being patient and cautious, even in as seemingly placid an activity as writing. What do you think?
Hey Thor, I agree about Jedi having emotions, but needing to control them. But don't you think they lost their emotional control because they participated in the war? There's a conversation between Tuvok and an alien intruder in the episode Alter Ego of the third season of Star Trek Voyager, where it's mentioned. Tuvok says that his species control their emotions, where the alien tells him that it's an illusion of control. So, weren't the Jedi deluded? Doesn't the conversation between Anakin and Yoda in episode 3 show that?
A Jedi Academy show would be awesome! But only if it's with Luke as grandmaster. I will never accpet Rey's new order. Nothing sequel-related is canon to me.
Personally, I don't think it was meant to be taken literally..Obi-Wan was trying to get across to him that a lightsaber is more personal than a blaster, something that Mandalorians and Jedi have in common. A weapon isn't just a weapon, it's forged from parts of you,and carries a legacy.Ironically enough,Anakin's last Jedi lightsaber lasted for more than 30 years, and he was in fact, the death of Obi-Wan..From certain point of view.
Engaging in war is one of the jedi many mistakes, there’s no sugarcoating that. Recruiting child soldiers is just another one and probably their biggest mistake. It makes sense for them to have made these mistakes in the prequels bc this is the same group that got blindsided by the sith and only one sith at that.
Regardless of lore reasons .. the lightsaber is critical from a story point of view to the Jedi , without the lightsaber the Jedi becomes generic wizard warrior monk
Hey thor, what are your thoughts on powercreep within star wars? While I understand the want for new and incredible powers, I think theyve been going too far since their first project, TFA. How would you expand the powers of the force while generally keeping consistent with the OT and PT?
Power creep is easy to solve, just say epic powers got lost and a holocron got rediscovered. With how easy this is, you wonder why holocrons aren't more ubiquitous in Disney SW. It's a skill at the end of the day, not just someone getting powers out of nowhere.
I think the fact that the Banite Sith "outgrew" lightsabers and only kept them around to mock Jedi says more about what a lightsaber is than what it isn't. It's a traditional weapon that has become symbolic of the Jedi, while the Sith are not as traditionalist as the Jedi. Without the Sith innovating past tradition, Jedi would likely still be using tethered lightsabers. As for essence transfer, that's clearly well established canon that's fully compatible with other lore. Force ghosts/spirits implies there's something beyond just flesh and blood in Star Wars and thus taking over another body should be possible. Similarly draining life for the sake of immortality like how Vitiate achieves his long life is also compatible with other aspects of the lore. Regarding child soldiers in Star Wars, Jedi really seem to like doing that to their kids. Zannah shouldn't have been on Ruusan... she was like 9 during that. At least Padawans are usually 13+
Hey Thor, Do you think that Disney has any plans to bring Luke Skywalker back, maybe in Dave Filoni’s new movie ? And if so, would his character be closer to how he is in the Sequel trilogy or do you think they would stay true to his character and how he is in the OriginL trilogy ?
Hey Thor, you've repeatedly asserted in your videos that the Jedi have friendships and hobbies outside of being Jedi. Aside from Obi-Wan's relationship with Dex and Luke's New Jedi Order, could you please give some examples? My experience of the lore is that the whole point of Luke's Order beyond reviving the Jedi was to make major reforms to how Jedi approached relationships of all kinds and emotions, and that prior to this in the Clone Wars and Old Republic eras the cause of anti-Jedi sentiment in the public was the result of the Jedi withdrawing from public life and isolating themselves to their literal ivory towers in between missions. Both KOTOR games touch on this at length, but it seems to be a big part of what Palpatine and Dooku were taking advantage of during the Prequels.
In my honest opinion, the crystal choosing the Jedi is a stupid idea. I don’t like that the other crystals are almost sentient, especially since we see Jedi using other lightsabers all the time. There’s no special connection between a Jedi and his weapon more than he made it his own, the way he likes it. Dooku with his curved hilt, Vader made his lightsaber a dark twin of his old lightsaber, but he didn’t have the same crystal. “This weapon is your life.” can take on a whole other meaning if you consider the lightsaber a reflection of the particular Jedi, as in reflecting you as a person, and nobody else should really have it. Not only that, but the lightsaber is the only weapon Jedi carry in a harsh world, where a man’s life is cheaper than water. In a pinch, the lightsaber is a Jedi’s lifeline, a source of light in the dark, a shield against a would be assassin, and a sword to defeat those who will not see reason.
Hey Thor, So, honestly this season of the Bad Batch has kind of been ruined for me. I would like to hear your thoughts on my opinion. So, I do not think Omega has developed as a character enough. When she sacrificed herself, thinking that the Empire would just pull out, that shouldn't have happened. Right when she said she surrendered, the Empire would've started either 1 kiling everyone and burning the village or 2 capturing everyone and taking them into custody or 3 occupying the island with a 100% crackdown on the citizens. I think she needed to see that happen, because at the end of the day, the Empire is evil. They are not compassionate and wouldn't let this island just rebuild and have everyone survive seeing them take Omega away. Also, Crosshair, Wrecker, AND Hunter all would've been captured or killed, because they are war criminals. Just because they prioritized capturing Omega, doesn't mean they'd let the rest of the Bad Batch survive free. So when this episode starts, the bad batch is plotting how to save Omega and get to Mount Tantis. But I argue, they should've been taken into custody (killing them off would ruin the rest of the season). It makes no sense they were all free despite being war criminals and they could just leave with Phee. The Empire would prevent all citizens from leaving the island, so they wouldn't have been able to leave anyway. I think they should've had Echo and the "gang" (lol) save the Bad Batch from custody and then continue the story line from there. I feel like 1 not letting omega develop more as a character by seeing not everyone has good in them and 2 the empire letting the village survive along with the bad batch makes this ending so unrealistic. In addition, I feel compared to Ezra and ahsoka in their respective third seasons, Omega has developed the least as a character.
I think it's stupid that people think that Jedi can't have friends have they not seen any Star Wars content where a Jedi has friends because it exists the respawn Jedi games Cal has friends in Star Wars the Old Republic there are Jedi that have friends the Jedi you play as in the Old Republic mmo have friends it's called your companions
I miss back when the lightsaber was just a cool laser sword. Even in the prequels, some random jedi tosses a new lightsaber for Anakin. Now in pretentious works like TCW or Mando, they've become mini-excaliburs with ridiculous new rules that don't make any sense.
Even in the OT Luke making *his own* lightsaber was treated as a big deal and was a sign he was a full fledged Jedi Knight said by both Yoda and Vader so no I disagree there.
@@CrazyxEnigma No it isnt lol. Luke literally builds his lightsaber offscreen and the only reason it was green is because Lucas changed it to make the special effects work properly. Know your movie facts 🥱
Once a force sensitive child has trained enough to be a Padawan under a Jedi Master, they then cease to be a child. I think the term "child soldier" is overstating and misunderstanding the issue.
It is a line that further explains how Obi-Wan and the Jedi of the prequels were detached from the actual reality of being a Jedi. A Jedi is so much more than their lightsaber, it is their knowledge & diplomatic skill to deescalate a situation without violence that makes them true peacekeepers. A lightsaber is nothing but a tool & a Jedi's absolute last resort. The fact that Obi-Wan says that its their most important asset shows that he was a failure (as described by George Lucas in the Star Wars Archives book for Episodes I-III).
Let’s be honest, a Jedi without a lightsaber is like a cowboy without his hat.

I always took "this weapon is your life" as in it's a service weapon and defense tool. Just like in the Dredd 2012 movie. Losing the pistol is supposed to be an "instant fail" for New Judges in probabtionary period.
And unlike the pistols from Dredd Lightsabers can be used by people who get their hands on them even Non-Jedi.
10:29 Honestly that is a great Idea and slice of life student by day warrior by night shows are popular espeicly in anime and kids shows here in the west... Like it could work really well and I for one would have loved it!
The first thing I think of when I think of Jedi (because I am old and Alec was awesome) is “This aren’t the droids you’re looking for.” :)
The force is not a superpower, it is a life style. The force is not limitless either, a Jedi needs to stay in constant focus to use it and can become fatigue. That is why a lightsaber is crucial to kept that Jedi alive in combat or perhaps but the Jedi enough time to collect themeselves.
9 year old Anakin- "No one can kill a jedi!"
22 year old Anakin- kills all the 9 year old jedi. 🥴
Lucas- "It's like poetry, it rhymes..."
Leftoids don't like cops so they would cheer on it just like they do on the Jedi purge
I think it has to do with the bonding of the Kyber Crystal over the Lightsaber itself per se. The Lightsaber that houses the Kyber Crystal, is an extension of the Jedi and their connection to The Force in a sense in a physical manifestation.
The way Thor pronounced Vegeta is really funny to me.
Lightsaber is not just a Jedi weapon, creating lightsaber is one of the most important step, that padavan must do to become e jedi🤔
They also have a vampire thing going on with darth nihilus
Jedi can even have hobbies: now I'm imagining a Jedi Master knitting a scarf while teaching his/her Padawan the ways of the force.
I frickin love slice of life anime that has hints of supernatural or mystic. I would watch the crap out of a jedi temple slice of life show
They couldn't (the marketing team) help themselves and will put them into some new war

Lol
Great video as always Brother Thor!
(20+ years have numbed us to that I think.)
As for the body transfer piece, I do like that. Trying to stay with "less siad better."
/chuckle cheers all.
It is the wand who chooses the wizard.
Someone behind TCW'08 understood that sentence too literally.
damn thor.. bravo! Perfectly put!!
Thanks for videos with good explanations like these
More importantly, why does Obi look like so weird in that scene..
Oh and first thing that comes to mind when you mention Jedi.. Force choke !
To bad Disney made light sabers a joke. Also I agree on the comment you made about padawans. I also think the jedi is giving them a chance to fight against the horrors that war will bring instead of being another helpless victim to it.
It's like the zanpakutou of the shinigami in Bleach.
Hey Thor, I would point to The Clone Wars Cartoon part 2 (?) where Luminara is watching over Bariss as the later builds her lightsaber. That code is the answer to this episodes question, but I do like how you went into a sort of deep dive.
Jedi = samurai in space
*HOLY SHITE,* been a minute since I checked out this channel. Seems all's well. : ]
8:08 Interesting 🤔 That’s usually my go to answer when I have the debate “Star Wars is for kids”
Like a Police Badge, it helps identify. But it is so much more than just that.
Hey Thor,
I'd like to slightly push back on what you said about Lightsabers
I think that the more down to earth practical reasons you mentioned are a far smaller part from the point of view of the jedi as to why Obi Wan is scolding Anakin in that scene.
While I would assume that during the filming of AOTC George probably hadn't worked out the specific details of the force bond of a crystal to it's jedi, I would say that even if we go just a little bit further into the movie there is a line that seems to make it clear that Anakin would have been scolded just as bad if not worse, if instead of simply dropping it, Anakin's lightsaber were destroyed and unable to be used by another for nefarious purposes that could tarnish the jedi image
That line being inside the droid factory on Geonosis when his lightsaber was cut in two. It is clearly inoperable and would not be able to be used by anyone to tarnish the image of the jedi. Infact Anakin even remained in possession of the greater portion of his hilt. Never the less he is disappointed in himself and worried about how Obi Wan will react when he learns about it. Rather notably, he does not seem particularly frighted for his life despite being shot at by hostile geonosians moments earlier
Personally I believe that adding the context of that scene on Geonosis from the same movie is enough to conclude that, while a valid concern, the image of the jedi is not the sole or even the primary reason for which Anakin was earlier scolded for losing it and reminded that the weapon is his life.
Star Wars introspection
Hey Thor, when it comes to the alternated scenes in the OT, are there any that you like the change. For me, I like and prefer changing force ghost Anakin to look like Hayden. I always thought that the man standing next to force ghost Obi Wan and Yoda was Luke’s Uncle, which seemed off putting to me.( For those who would criticize me for that assumption, I was 6 or 7 when I saw the OT for the first time, so give me a break) I also like the added beak of the Sarlacc Pit. It makes it look like a living creature instead of looking like a big hole with “worms” coming out of it.
Oooof, that beard on Ewan McGreggor!
First responders often say their radio is their life.
Jedi are samurai, and the lightsaber is their katana.😊

Hey Thor,
Speaking of the idea of an animated show based on Luke and his order, do you think based on the point the canon is at now there’s any possibility we could see a show about his adventures after episode 6? If so how would you handle it, what would your over arching conflict for Luke, Han and Leia, and how would you integrate legends stories into it. I would love to see more of Luke in his prime on screen. Mando scratched the surface and I love that scene but I know they could show some amazing feats and story’s
Finally, something not bashing Star Wars is, refreshing
For how boring Star Wars has become, a lightsaber will always be cool
Hey Thor with all the fan love or sometimes hatred for Dave Filoni do you think we are going to get or even need another long-running animated series, similar to Clone Wars or sorta like Bad Batch? Do you think they would go away from Clone Wars with a new style and everything, maybe og trilogy or sequels related, or would you expect another Clone Wars spinoff?
I would actually watch a teen drama show with padawans
Except it isn’t an illusion. We see what happens when they don’t control it we get Sith. For Vulcans that is Romulans.
@@emberfist8347 A Sith or Pong Krell. Or Anakin in the end as well.
I'm telling you, the symptoms were there.
How can people hate power creep, but simultaneously want the Old Republic to be 100% faithful to Legends stories?
Power creep is easy to solve, just say epic powers got lost and a holocron got rediscovered. With how easy this is, you wonder why holocrons aren't more ubiquitous in Disney SW. It's a skill at the end of the day, not just someone getting powers out of nowhere.
Cosmonaut Variety Hour is triggered .
He is triggered by everything like HelloGreedo.
Its a weapon... epsesially a defensive weapon. people overthink it
You could argue people overthink because Obi Wan overstates it: “It is your life”
I think the fact that the Banite Sith "outgrew" lightsabers and only kept them around to mock Jedi says more about what a lightsaber is than what it isn't.
If you were in Star Wars wouls you rather be powerful in the Force and weak with a Lightsaber or weak with the Force and powerful with a Lightsaber?
Hey Thor,
Do you think that Disney has any plans to bring Luke Skywalker back, maybe in Dave Filoni’s new movie ? And if so, would his character be closer to how he is in the Sequel trilogy or do you think they would stay true to his character and how he is in the OriginL trilogy ?
A mix most likely
W video
Hey Thor,
So, honestly this season of the Bad Batch has kind of been ruined for me.
Someone doesn’t know the lore.
Even in the OT Luke making *his own* lightsaber was treated as a big deal and was a sign he was a full fledged Jedi Knight said by both Yoda and Vader so no I disagree there.

*"NUFF SAID"™*
It is a line that further explains how Obi-Wan and the Jedi of the prequels were detached from the actual reality of being a Jedi.
Are you joking
