    The Derry actress plays rebellious party girl Michelle Mallon on the hit show Derry Girls, which made a triumphant return to Channel 4 for its third and final season last Tuesday.

    Super proud of this young woman nailing the misogyny double-standard issue - and then we see a classic example of it - dude cutting her off & talking over the top of her to protect his ego & take back control. Go, Jamie-Lee, you're a star. Guts guts guts all the way.

    To be fair she didn't call him mysogynistic she said the question was. I felt he didn't let her explain her point. He talked over her and shut her down. She was smiling though it and took it very well. If you look at the body language he's leaning over towards her a bit aggressively, trying to shut her up. He used to be a better interviewer. I have to say in my opinion it was very much like Ryan thought, I don't like what you said so let's move on. Nevermind Ryan might have touched on a subject that Jamie Lee might have wanted to express why she finds it so annoying.

    Unfortunately, many people miss the context of what she is saying, primarily because Ryan cut her off. Male actors are seen as silver foxes and employable at a ripe age. They enjoy playing characters significantly younger and this goes without anyone raising an eyebrow because society sees male ageing as acceptable, if not admirable. Esteemed female actors have often commented that they are deemed unemployable when they reach the age of 35 because of the bias towards female aging and being seen as 'over the hill' and no longer attractive to a male gaze. That's why we see so many male actors coupled on-screen with female wives, girlfriends (etc) half their age. There are just a few female actors that are lucky to be still considered employable after 40. Many female actors are forced to write, produce and direct their own productions to stay employed. Reese Witherspoon talks about this at length and why she was inspired to start her own successful production company, with female leads. With that said, I find it interesting that so many men feel that they are in a position to lecture on misogyny. This is an experience that they have never experienced and will never experience. As a white person I would never have the audacity to lecture a black person on racism. Women are over being told by men what they should think and ordered to 'get back in your box'. Women are out of the box and they ain't going back in.

      She definitely has an inflated ego, but also, in general, women prefer older men and men prefer younger women. Therefore the idea that women over the age of 35 are no longer seen as attractive to the male gaze is true. And its biology that determines that. Not society.

    • @booker4629
      @booker4629 2 года назад

      @@MrSchwood It could also be argued that men have a biological urge to rape, kill, pillage, possess what is not theirs and create war. We have unique brain structure as human beings, our old primitive (limbic) brain and new evolved brains (cortex). The new brain allows us to conceptualise complex ideas, forward plan, problem solve, understand things from the other person perspectives (empathy) and adapt and adjust accordingly to changes in our environment. It also regulates the primitive brain from urges that may be fatal or destructive for us and allows us to live in an equal and civilised society. An example being the contrast between Putin and Zelenskyy. One is very much led by his primitive (emotional) brain and the other by new brain compromise and logic. Women no longer accept the danger, destruction and inequalities of a society led my primitive male urges. The difficulty here being that it doesn’t benefit most men for women to be treated as equals so the urge to repress continues. This is not to stereotype, as some men are very evolved as human beings and secure within themselves and as such, wish to develop an equal and fair society for their mothers, sisters, nieces and children. Unfortunately, we have a lot of men who act from their primitive brain and this has no place in modern civilised society.

    Jamie Lee is amazingly talented but also very intelligent and so grounded too. She handled that question in such an honest yet very polite way, she was highlighting something people may not always be aware of about the misogynistic nature of being an actress and some difficulties women may face. I think Jamie Lee was so courteous and polite so fair play to her!
    I also sincerely believe the interviewer meant no harm, but it seemed like upon reflection he realised he might have gone too far so he tried to deviate the conversation elsewhere. I think he first should have listened to Jamie Lee’s full response before moving on just to acknowledge her full opinion but perhaps he was just doing what he thought was best by moving on. Sometimes people have delayed responses to things and can take time to register that something they’ve said might’ve gone too far and don’t always find the best solution. I think if he asked something like “What was it like to play a teenager in the 90s?”, it would be more centred around the acting/characterisation/setting as opposed to the individual’s actual age which is not really relevant to anything in this context. I think if the question was posed differently and not about a person’s actual age then it would’ve been totally appropriate. I think what Jamie Lee was getting at here is that in society, for example a more mature man is celebrated (black and pepper hair etc) whereas a woman is often compelled to always look a certain way. Acting gigs should fit the person and their talents as opposed to anything else. I just wanna say as a side comment, Jamie Lee is beautiful!
    I don’t think there was ill intent and I believe they both were just having an open conversation. The host was pleasant and seemed engaged but he overstepped then kinda acknowledged that. They then proceeded to have a chilled conversation. I think a lesson from this is not to ask someone’s age in a context like this (obviously in certain situations like in relationships it’s vital to know someone’s age which is why I’m saying this) as it’s irrelevant to someone’s ability to portray characters. Many shows (even American films and TV shows) have actors who are playing teenagers who aren’t teenagers in real life. Jamie Lee was incredible as Michelle Mallon. She was class in Derry Girls!The focus should be on how wonderful her acting and work has been instead of personal things about her. She handled that awkward question with such grace and had the courage to speak on something she felt strongly about. Even when she was cut off she was so respectful, very commendable.
    She’s a really down-to-earth girl, so lovely! Jamie Lee is also smashing it in her new acting endeavours. I think Jamie Lee is brilliantly talented and intelligent.

He could have worded that a number of ways that wouldn’t have caused awkwardness. “I understand you’re 30 playing a teenager, that’s cool, do you have any similarities to the character when you were her age?. “How do you find playing a teenager? Does it remind you of your school days in Derry?”. “It’s great to see a young local woman being cast, was it weird going back to school again?”. “Playing a teenager again must be fun, how does it compare to your days as a teenage Derry girl?”. It’s common for actors playing teenagers being in their mid to late 20s a lot boils down to child labour laws etc. but with Derry girls it’s not like they are playing over sexed up characters like the 90210 reboot.

Best to just concentrate on all the good things in your life and move on. 😊
