Easily one of the best thumbnails ever. EVER.
Right? It looked like a full on meme shitpost. I love it so much
With a little help from Maxell ;-)
Made me watch tell me by p ditty
Have to agree! but this is a quiet printer and the thumbnail was based off of LOUD speakers. Still awesome, especially with the top blowing off the mars 3!
@@xj_overlander it's a parody of the maxell hifi advertisment.
The thumbnail is a masterpiece. Great reference!
Now you have to answer which one you prefer: 60 or 90 minutes magnetic tape cassettes? There’s no way you get that reference in the thumbnail unless you lived in the pre-cd era
It is a masterpiece
@@retroluminico neither... I prefer my tapes high fidelity!
The “resin vat too full” error occurs if you fill the vat while the machine is powered off - the platform for the vat skews slightly forward when it is unpowered. I figured this out through trial and error, I had thought a sensor was bad at first.
it's normal for such things to happen.
same thing happens in reverse with our espresso machine.
if you empty out one of the containers while it's powered off it doesn't know you did so.
I love how you cover resin printers as well as FDM and general engineering tech and principles. IMO it's refreshing content while still being in line with the channel and is more entertaining and engaging than the boring FDM only channels
Thanks! I'm hoping to take the channel more into a diverse direction in the future, too - keeps me interested in the topics and (hopefully) provides a wider range of inspiration for everyone watching, too!
@@MadeWithLayers I'm excited to see your production value and presentation style applied to other (tech or tech adjacent?) topics :)
That thumbnail made me feel old lol. I remember that ad from my childhood. How nostalgic lol.
Excellent review and great printer, I’m also looking forward to get one, especially for the tilting VAT.
VAT is not an acronym in this case.
Love this look at the printer Tom, nice work! The intro is amazing! I was surprised to see that this is the priciest printer you have though, figured there must be something more expensive in there! As always, great shots, editing, and audio. Of course, the video is great too! Keep it up!
Just installed the upgrade yesterday, the speed is amazing!
Your thumbnail recreation of the famus image "Blown-away Man" by Steven Steigman is amazing :)
Am I the only one who thinks it is absolutely ridiculous that we have to censore famous art just to please some super prudent American corporation?
No surprise some Viennese museums pulled off a stunt by opening an Only Fans account for those statues and paintings.
Get this: We were moving a few month ago. In the piles of stuff there was a Polish lifestyle magazine "Sukces" from 1992, just as capitalism entered Poland.
They appear to have had a photoshoot in each issue. There was a topless woman in a garden, in kind of glamour, kind of suggestive poses. I guess nobody gave a damn back then and while Poland was infatuated with American lifestyle, certainly puritanism has not been imported yet. XD
That puritanical tyranny extends beyond just RUclips, and extensively into open source software as well.
Ditto on the thumbnail being brilliant. Great content!
Agreed on all your points … but still just love that they did what ever needed to get a minimum cost upgrade path. Now if they did a large format printer I could completely transfer over to Prussia products only ;)
Can't wait to see third party kits that are compatible with the upgrade kit, because as you mentioned the board and frame and enclosure are objectively not worth 1600 euro
Well done Tom. As always, enjoy the time, detail, objectivity, and thoughtfulness you put into your reviews. The snake head innuendos are really just a bonus on top of all that. 🤣
Really amazing review! And still I love my old Maxell tapes.
Cool that you are using the Statens museum for kunst collection, theres so much fantastic stuff in there in ultra high res - im happy my country is providing stuff like this for free :)
I won't miss a video from Thomas because he is the best DIY hairdresser I know. Also he is explaining with care.
Bro, I really enjoyed the cover picture of the video. Nostalgic.
just bought upgrade kit for mine! thx for a review
Dude, thumbnail is flawless
I love that Maxell reference hahah
Those extra large SLA printers that unky jesse reviewed would definitely benefit from that vat tilt mechanism. I'm curious why prusa didn't just add a slope to the one side of the vat to keep it from spilling with the same amount of resin.
Thank you Thomas !!!!!! Amazing thumbnail too !!!!
Love to see the Prusa SL1S and Anycubic Photon Mono X side by side comparison.
Wow, awesome thumbnail! Great job
1:30 You recently made a video about how you should do your disclaimer about reviewed products. I want to say, that was perfect. It flows well with the content
I like the Maxell thumbnail. Good work.
I bought one of these at the start of the ChiTu board lock down. Having used it for a few weeks, I’d trade all of my printers for a second one. They are expensive, but wow. Just wow.
I love the thumbnail!
I upgraded because i wore out the led i had trouble with getting the tilt mechanism level and was having print adhesion problems on larger builds on the old smaller platform once tightened I managed to get it level and it served me well for the last two years. The upgrade was a walk in the park until I created a slight abrasion on the ribbon of the LCD screen and had to order a new one the print speed is phenomenal should have done it sooner but I have to agree it’s a tight work area and I rushed to get it up and running and it hit me in the wallet.
I’m liking and commenting for that thumbnail ALONE!
A new Sanladerer video! YEAH!
I have a strong feeling that I, NEED IT!!
That speed at this price point is wild!
I'm blown away by that thumbnail
Would love to see a review on a photocentric printer.
I owned a Voxelab Proxima 6" and the prints from it were absolutely incredible even for a resin. I sold it and "upgraded" to a Elegoo Saturn which is great for more printing room but has issues the Voxelab did not. I would really like to compare the new Proxima 8.9 as it's likely similar hardware to the Saturn just later to market. Even more interesting is the Elegoo Jupiter. I had thought about joining the Jupiter's Kickstarter but it's clear other models with the same print area will release within a few months of the Jupiter and possibly be more polished. In the meantime I'm waiting for my formbot 2.4 kit to ship.
I’d be interested in seeing your take on the Photon Ultra with the TI DLP system. Seems like a more powerful light engine that might work better with more “industrial” resins.
my take: too low resolution.
@@JKC40 its dlp man...720p dlp is actually more detail than 4k monochrome lcd
@@Presbiter Not really..
@@BH4x0r Of course it is. But to know that one must understand the technology. One very significant thing fe dlp does not produces shadows, lcd does. May be look up what that means in detail and learn something, just a suggestion^^
@@Presbiter I know DLP basically are tiny MEMS mirrors that will reflect or won't and that way can get better contrast than LCD, but it's still less than ideal as a 720p DLP chip is unable to produce as small details, if you get what i mean. if it was a 4K chip that'd be better.
Mine is on the way😁
Thanks for the review! It really goes into more depth than other reviews and shows why numbers on a page aren't the full story. Got an affiliate link for the SL1S + CW1S bundle?
I haven't put a specific link to the bundles, but you can just click through using the regular links.
I think the old vat vas a cast aluminum, bead blasten and milled on the mating surfaces, looking at the surface finish.
Man oh man really tempted to pick one of these up and this video is certainly not helping haha
Looking at the price solves that problem for me very effectively.
Wouldn't have to worry as much about those power outages- your prints would be done!
I ordered the upgrade as soon as I saw it was a thing but now I am wondering if I should hold off installing :D
The speed increase is such a big draw though. Nnnnnnnnnnnnng confuse! 🤔
@@crussty3d or would be well within UPS battery storage limits :)
@@hellterminator same
Love the thumbnail 😝
This was a really god video, thanks Tom! 💙💜
Also, will you ever get any of the FormLabs SLA printers, I think they look really nice.
you're right, I´m planning to review their Form 3 Printer.
I love your videos!
That may actually get me to purchase one of those dirty pigs. I don't really want to print with resin at home but the speed is impressive.
The Mini or this one ... both would make a great addition to my MK3S.
save yourself the trouble and get an anycubic mono for 180$ same print volume , same print time 1800$ less markup.
Loved the thumbnail..
This NEEDS to get cheaper, it will be the next manufacturing revolution with that incredible amount of detail
this sneeds
Filament FDM is way cheaper and usually good enough. They complement each other, covering slightly different niches.
I hope they make one with a bigger print area! Looks interesting but a bit expensive for the print area
Haha, I like that cover photo. Reminds of the Bose speaker picture I have in the garage/area52.
I thought it was a Maxell ad?
@@spamcan9208 Yes, Maxell it was.
I hope the tech for it becomes better and better as time goes on. As well as cheaper.
Nice, but I just don't see a consumer business case for this over the Mars. Its not 6x better certainly
I will get the upgrade, when my screen dies. Best replacement part ever!
And since I have already build-your-own SL1 kit, Im not afraid of turning it apart!
Amazing!
So far Im really glad I have chosen the Prusa SL1 over all the cheap chinese brands!
(Mainly because I didnt wanted to support china with my money).
I guess I have now to print more, so my screen breaks faster!
Would be interested to see how it stacks up against a Phrozen Sonic Mini 4K or 8K
This is fast and great of course…but imagine what we can get once the patent on the CLIP process expires…
7:53 I didn’t think of that. Finally I’ve found someone with dirtier mind than mine.
You could make PCBs on these kind of printers with photoresist film on PCB. Placing pcb on printer LCD (design of pcb on lcd screen) with photoresist facing down. Then cleaning uncured photoresist and dipping in ferric chloride.
It will reduce time required for making homemade pcb with high quality.
It would be even faster if you could do continuous printing with a DLP projector and projecting down on a descending plate into the liquid... i wonder if that's coming back then?
Came just for the Maxell references, wasn't disappointed...
Thank you Thomas Salamander
I get that speed with my elegoo mars 2 pro with some setting changes. So, that being said, I bet I can dial this printer even faster :-o.
Okay you got this
Your *audiophile Thumbnail* sent me ..😁
I would like to see what people are doing with IDEX printers. I think they have huge potential for creativity.
Some of the points in this video (like 6:27) are a much better argument for the SL1S than what Prusa chose for their website
Excellent review. How would you rate the print detail of the sls1s vs the Mars 3 ?
Nice Lightning McQueen reference in the intro! I think only Pixar fans, and parents will catch that. Ka-chow!
I like your hair on the thumbnail 😁
I also upgrade my devices by adding a sticker to them!
Racing stripes are the way to go
@@francistaylor1822 But only combined with British racing green.
The price is not that crazy. The accuracy of the printed parts are on par with what a quality desktop CNC would output. The CNC alone would be double the price of the full SL1S setup, and then you need to buy additional tooling. That means we have 2x cheaper way to make molds for resin casting
Thomas it's been a year plus since your SL1S review and a big year for 3D Resin printers. Any thoughts about a year end "round-up"> Is the SL1S still tops or has the 8K 10" LCD Mono screens pushed their way to the top? And how about your recommendations/thoughts for 2023? Where is this all going...you know in resin?
If your family has female person included (or you are/had it otherwise), UV nail apparatus is good for resin printed works to afterprint hardening, 30sec UV radiaton, turn 180 degree, 30 sec again and its done. Of course cleaning must do manually but why not use what you have?
Would love a comparison between the SL1 and the Form 3. Especially including accuracy.
I'll be getting a Form 3 for review soon!
@@MadeWithLayers Nice! I actually have one. I thought I was getting the top of the line printer, but have been rather disappointed by the accuracy. It's gotten a little better over the years w/ some updates, but still has a lot of issues w/ surface tension stuff or something. You can see a lot of discussions on their forums.
agree, it’s hard to really grok comparisons of printers at two widely different price points. It’s ok to compare with the last version, but SL1S should also be compared with others at a similar price point to see its value.
I dig the idea of the tilting bed, but for a printer of that size, I'd rather roll my money into a larger print size versus going down from a midsize printer I have now.
Speaking of speed, I was browsing in 'dream land' the other day and came across some high end printers from Uniz that have a starting build speed of 200mm/hr and go UP to 600mm/hr (!!), and with 'standard' features like a pumped resin supply, liquid cooled print screen... Ugh, I was getting weak-kneed sitting down. I would totally use all of my RUclips pull if I were in your shoes for a demo model. 😁
I love the idea, the price has held me off. I can get a much bigger one for the price and that's what I need. However, for those parts you take out after upgrading, maybe make a knockoff SL1?
This Music brings back memories from HOB Hackerman
Why isn't it top down? Breaking off the bottom seems goofy, like doing the hokey-pokey.
Thanks
Thank you very much!
Okay how do I get that material list to load all the siraya products on my prusa sl1s speed. I cant figure it out.
You could pick up a Transform for $600 more, so I really don't see that price point being competitive. And unless they have a patent on that tilt mechanic, I would wait for others manufacturers to catch up and wait for a better deal.
How does this compare to the 3D systems figure 4 standalone, that prints fast but at Aus $30,000 it’s expensive. They also claim their resins are UV stable after curing is this possible? Can you use 3D systems resins with this printer? Thanks for your help.
I'm motivated to learn Blender!
why, at 5:14 with 4 items in the center screen, is the item to the right out of focus? It seems your camera was searching at that point. to bad the items seems well printed
Hmm I paid $189USD for my Photon Mono recently. I get the 2s layer time and amazing quality. I don't see anything about this Prusa that makes it worth 10x more money.
Take a hires photo of your prints and look for lines and layer shifts.
@@Holztransistor lines are caused by the layers and the prusa doesn't do anything better in that regard. as for layer shifts they usually only happen with a bent z axis and if you think that doesn't happen on this 2000$ waste of money you are delusional.
ingmar you are overexposing your prints at 2s for the mono. unless you use some funky unknown darker than black resin . regular resin takes between 1s and 1,6s tops on the mono . chances are you get failed prints at those exposure times because your plate isn't leveled correctly or you have a way too high lift speed as is standard on those machines .
Use the parts for an dyi curing station?
FEELS GOOD TO BE BACK IN 2018 LOL
Lets just thank prusa for even providing an upgrade path from sl1 to sl1s. That is very environment and consumer friendly!
How does it compare to a Form 2 or 3? Are they the benchmark at this price bracket?
I'll be getting a Form 3 for review soon!
Resin Printing Improvements needed: Larger build platform, Lower Cost, Reduced MESS (serious drawbacks that still leaves me with doing FDM prints for most parts)
Its all already here...we have dlp printers like the new anycubic for below 1000$ and elegoo has the jupiter 6k with a big built plate also for below 1000$ and what mess are you talking about?
"It's kind of good." - Thomas Sanladerer 2021
So why don't you print them laying down when the duration only depends on the hight of the print?
Only because of the finish and the needed supports?
Great printer, but even with the Prusa-premium it's too expensive.
at 1499€ i'd give it a hard maaaaybe
at 1299€ i'd get one
Make it a combo with the curing station at.. 1550€ and i'd buy that. but almost 750€ for what basically is a ultrasonic cleaner with a turntable and a UV light??
what is a good uv power % for the mono x for translucent resin?
Is the software also open source? That’s amazing. Sadly too tiny for me.
it might be fast... but shipping and getting it isn't. I ordered mine on August 21, 2021. And I'm still haven't gotten it. :(
Speed, change the game! Whatever on SLA or FDM.
so its faster, but if i wanted it for war hammer type figures (detailed, with intention to pain them), etc, how much worse/better is it than the 4k ones that everyone recommends?
depends mainly on pixel density and how big you want them. Since a lot of the 4k printers also have a bigger buildplate than the sl1s (mainly thinking of elegoo saturn), you end up with pretty much the same pixel density (~500 ppi in both saturn and sl1s by my calculations)
Something like the phrozen sonic mini would maybe translate to a better quality print (~700 ppi), but tbh, in my experience 500 ppi makes beautiful prints anyways. And paint helps cover up a lot of imperfections
Warhammer minis are usually painted in complex, weathered, and intricate schemes of a dozen coats or more, so I there'd definitely be diminishing returns on additional pixel density.
I mainly do tabletop minis and greeblies and stuff on my resin printers and the main advantage here is speed. If, you are like me, I tend to send your Mars/Saturn prints over night, then there are minimal advantages. For me I ordered the upgrade for my SL1 because of daytime prototyping where the round trip time improvement is worth more than the upgrade costs.
For when I am DMing an RPG I could definitely see me running off a quick piece of scatter or a BBG though knowing I can cut the print time down ...
As someone said elsewhere, the resolution/rendering improvement is moot when you are 1) painting and 2) going for table ready rather than holding it an inch from your eyeball 😆
@@tomiesz I have happily played against FDM printed armies - it's all about your gaming crew really :)
-Hey Thomas, a while back you did the live upgrade to "S" level, and run into an issue at the end. What was the solution to your problem?- Never mind, it's mentioned in the video.
Strangely I can't find the upgrade video any longer. Is it removed?
Thx
RUclips screwed up the video, so it's currently set to unlisted
Every time I hear “no money changed hands”, I hear a little demon yelling from the back “His Tesla will be delivered within 6 months” 😈
