Longstreet is an American crime drama series that was broadcast on the ABC in the 1971-1972 season (see 1971 in television). A 90-minute pilot movie of the same name aired prior to the debut of the series as an ABC Movie of the Week.
The series starred James Franciscus as insurance investigator Mike Longstreet. After a bomb (hidden in a champagne bottle) kills his wife, Ingrid, and leaves him blind, the title character pursues and captures the killers. He then continues his career as an insurance investigator despite his blindness.
Bruce Lee appeared in four episodes as Li Tsung, an antiques dealer and Jeet Kune Do expert who becomes Longstreet's martial arts instructor. Wikiquote has quotations from Li Tsung's teachings.
Twenty-three episodes of the show were aired before it was canceled in 1972.

Imagine watching tv in 1971, no youtube, no tik toks, no ufc, and you seeing this episode, how cool and refreshing it was.
No wonder why we still talk about Bruce Lee in 2023.
Who knew that 50 years later, people would still watch this show because of a supporting character who turns out to be more legendary than all the other actors in this show COMBINED

This is Jeet Kune Do. A lot of people think that Jeet Kune Do is a fighting style, but it's not. Even fighting video games get it wrong when they say that one of their character fighting style is Jeet Kune Do and they move and fight like Bruce Lee. ...No no, Jeet Kune Do is a concept... a philisophy. Anybody who fights in MMA, THAT is Jeet Kune Do. Jeet Kune Do is unique for every person. Take what is useful to you, and discard what is not (again, it will vary between individuals)

JKD is a philosophy first and martial art later. There are still guiding principles into what made JKD a formless style. Main guideline is "apply what is useful, discard what is useless and add what is specifically your own" but also "longest weapon to the nearest target", "economy of motion", "precision over power, timing over speed", "simplicity and directness". Those are the guiding principles of JKD. You can't just add anything from whatever martial art you like and call it JKD. If someone is using flashy techniques, it's not JKD since it breaks the enonomy of motion principle, if they use big winding punches or kicks it's not JKD since it's not direct or simple, if someone prioritizes power and speed then it's not JKD since precision and timing beat power and speed, etc. So if you narrow things down, techniques specific to JKD are the Straight Lead, snapping side kick (low and mid), stomp in grappling range, snapping back fist, finger jab, etc.
@Anoneemus Noename yeah, but JKD is not mostly useless in MMA. In fact many of JKD's techniques have been performed effectively in MMA. Things like front leg sidekick, intercepting attacks, limb destruction (like what happened to Anderson Silva), etc. And if trained vigorously and correctly I would argue that JKD could be the most effective way to win in MMA.

One of the underrated 60s TV shows which contains full dialogue of Bruce talking about the way of intercepting fist.

You sound angry about Bruce Lee. After reading his book I dont think at anytime he spoke about philosophy in a decorated or fancy manner. He was pure in his beliefs with no need for embelishment.

Fans tuned in to see Lee, no doubt, but the ratings were likely low due to the over all concept, and storyline of the show. Remember, Bruce already had an established fan base from his days as Kato on "Theh Green Hornet". Check it Out! Ciao!!!

Hell first time i seen this footage of Bruce like many other Bruce Lee fans, awesome.
I REMEMBER WATCHING LONGSTREET, AND BRUCE LEE'S EPISODES WERE THE BEST.
I remember this series as a kid. I watched it because Lee was teaching James who was blind how to fight. And I was fascinated by that idea for some reason. And I was interested in learning to fight. I had no idea he would later become a super star. And this is as close as you can get to personal lessons from the Master now. Thanks for compiling this footage!

Small ?, he was high 172 centimeters. Marciano and Tyson 178 the first and more or less Tyson equal, may be one centimeter more .. Already great masters in the past smallers than he was deadly, so I think Bruce too and for me he willbbe always "The dragon". He was not a prof fighter so he don't would having the same automatism, but as power in punches and kicks he has been not second to anyone. His right side kick rest still today the most powerfull I had seen. In a kick contest put ko Skip Mullings as nothing with a left hook kick in his stomac. Bruce would breaking wooden tablettes like is available on his H. Kong tv aappears in '70 without any support. In that case he broked four on five tablettes take by simply scotch with ONE HAND ..

I always loved the look on Lee's face when his lesson's interrupted. You can tell he really hates interruptions when things get good.
I helped teach martial arts and it's a buzzkill when It was getting to the part where they realize the big picture so I definitely feel that from Bruce LMFAO.

@Blia Yang I wouldn't say raging as we have yet to see footage of him going on one. But he did do Cocaine. There were only two times where his rage was documented though. The first was during his feud with Lo Wei. They hated each other, but tolerated each other when Big Boss made a boat load of cash. However, when Fist of Fury came around, Lee was enraged at him. While there was probably more to it than that, the big reason was, that Bruce Lee hated Racism. By that I mean he hated both sides of it. Fist of Fury was meant to be a re-telling of Chinese Folk Hero Chen Zhen, but Bruce hated the way the Japanese was being heavily portrayed, just as much as he hated Chinese being a victim of Japanese racism. At one point he stormed the studio intent on hurting Lo. Lo insisted that Bruce pulled a knife on him, but no one could provide proof. Eventually Bruce quit Lo Wei and took Golden Harvest out from under him as his popularity outweighed Lo's and the cast and crew he worked with in the past, was now working with Bruce on Way of The Dragon. The second time he had a rage moment, was when some stunt guy decided to do the stupid thing and jump Bruce's fence to challenge him to a fight. Brandon and Shannon were out in the yard playing when the man scared him. Needless to say the stunt guy got what he wanted. With one kick, Bruce took him out and he spent most of his time in the hospital with a broken sternum. My point though is, most celeb Cokeheads are often out of control and unpredictable and could lash out at moment's notice. Bruce here, probably because he balanced it out with Weed and Hallucinogenics, kept cool and professional the whole time. Meaning he was one of the few functional addicts in the world next to Hunter S. Thompson.
Throughout this series, he taught his martial arts skills while also learning police investigation skills

What is great about this is that these programs show Lee's acting ability. The movies not as much when it concerns dialogue. I am glad I saw this. I may have to order longstreet DVD's.

Go to a book store and ask them if they have a book called Tao of Jeet Kune Do, those are his writings and his thoughts when he was developing the system. Also, keep in mind Jeet Kune Do is not a style, but it allows you to explore many styles and combine all the resources into what one would call JKD.
Unless you get lessons from Dan Monsanto.then again, you probably have to go through a barrel of paperwork,& have a net worth that rivals Tiger Woods.😍

YOU BITE!" 13:12 he had fought on the street and knew that fighting to survive had no rules so biting wasn't a immoral way of fighting. "learn the art of dying" 14:30 One other philosophy he had was that if you could stop the fear of being killed, then you could focus on all the more detailed aspects of fighting, not just trying to survive... I fucking love this! :D

I remember it very well when Bruce turned up on Longstreet. The Green Hornet was one of my favorite shows and Bruce seemed to disappear after that. How I missed his appearances on Blondie and Here Come the Brides I'll never know.

He was brilliant enough to introduce it in a way where it seemed an established form....he created it!!! He was so conscience and aware of what to do to get his message and name out there. He didn't bother with traditional obstacles. He felt he had the right and he did. A revolutionary he was.

Wow i never realised Bruce Lee taught so much about his Kung Fu in a film! Great video!
That movie Game of Death was originally meant to be a full version of what he was teaching here on Longstreet. He wanted to make an Edutainment action movie. Much like how Doctor Who was originally intended to be an Edutainment Adventure series. In the case of Lee, there was gonna be more battles on the pagoda, between him and his team against a person or persons who practiced a single style of Martial arts. And while they fought them, Lee as Hai Tien, would point out the faults of each style in comparison to his concept. Such as when he fought Dan Inosanto's character. In the case of Inosanto's style: Kali/Escrima, was looked down by Hai Tien for being too rehearsed, with no room or flexibility to adapt to unexpected moves and broken rhythm.
He didn't do kung fu per se; his art was formless and forever evolving.

His friend James Coburn said that he didn't think Bruce was an actor, so there's two different takes. But in terms of charisma, you can look at his interview with Peter Barton and that is just a classic example of blowing everyone away with cool. I think Barton said that Bruce was the best interview he ever had, or at least the most magnetic.

This is the only role where Bruce was being himself and I think it was his best acting job. The other roles he played a more humble and innocent guy which was seen more as a hero back then.
I've watched every video scene possible of Bruce lee on you tube here. I was brought up on him too. I was sixteen when I first discovered him on screen. all of Bruce's fighting screens were choreographed and reacted step by step of how he was going to hit his opponents. Some of the scenes, you could tell it wasn't going to be fake because the look in their eye's before Bruce struck them. The thought in their minds as you watch their eye's either squint or go all googly just before he hits and that's when you see their mouths slowly open up supposedly saying faaark, You know straight away its a real hit coming. But there's one scene here Long Street, that I've never seen until now where he wears this colored skivi or some kind of long sleeved and soft material top that have colored squares on it. That seems to be the same top his wife linda wore when they took a family photo standing by a tree and I'm not meaning in a rude way but to say when a person loves another so much. They love to wear anything their partner wears. But who ever wore it second, wore it because of that reason. Love is a crazy beautiful world we live.He's just so interesting and if it is that top, Its like wow I see a beautiful story with that top that maybe Linda can share with us if she'd like to. e brown well thats where your wrong, before bruce was an actor as you said he was a street fighter then a Wing Chun Martial Artis trained by Ip Man himself in Hong Kong back when Word War 2 was done thats when bruce had this sorta interest in fighting and dedicated his life to it, he may be an actor in many eyes of those who don't even research or highly respect the gratitude the man has he surely had gave hopes for MMA fighters who think he was at the top and was more advanced than anyone around 1960's till his death in 1973, His Art and Founder of Jeet Kune Do with its main principle of the Interception either by attack or feint whether what works for you, if you think he was an actor then why did he dedicated his life to reading books?, about philosophy, about the martial art that takes what useful for each individual and for those that disregard cause it will certainly not work too well for them in there favor, the only fucking reason JKD itself is hard cause you have to perfect everything in years through simplicity and Liberated thinking, Im a martial artist my self since i was 9, i would participate in Taekwondo classes and even learn wrestling, later on i would adapt to Muay Thai and its older version Muay Boran, Then i would later learn Jeet Kune Do, Jiu Jitsu, Wing Chun, and a little bit of kyokushin karate, simply its hard to do if you don't think you can do it and only physically and not mentally ready for whats coming and whats your next goal in life his id say the man isnt a God of Fighting but certainly a Man of Traits that saw his own ignorance and simply ignored that cause it would put a plague it his life and dedication
