This moment led to one of the simplest, but greatest quotes in victory lane history when a teared up Al told the reporter: "well....you don't know what Indy means". Yes Al. I understand. Great moment in Indy history and Scott Goodyear was, and is, a class act.
Watching Goodyear on the last lap pinching that beast all the way down to the grass below the apron in every corner is classic BALLS. Oh and in dirty air. Awesome stuff
It's hard to believe that was 30 years ago. I was sitting in the NW Vista grandstand and it was my first IndyCar race. I'll never forget how loud the cheering was. It ignited a passion for motorsports that lasts to this day. I'll be going this year's Belgian Grand Prix at Spa. 91 and 92 were fantastic 500's.
Yeah! I was jumping up and down on that final lap, and I thought Scott Goodyear might do it! I was rooting for Little Al, BTW, but that was one of the most amazing auto race finishes I had seen up until that point in my young life.
I was ten this year. I'm from Vancouver, and I was SO torn. Little Al was always my favourite driver, but Scott Goodyear was my countryman. We got Vancouver Tix every year. I am so grateful I got to witness real American open wheel racing before Tony George shat all over it.
@@weallfollowmanutd What are you talking about? Today's cars are faster. 2021 was the fasted field in history and the race average speed was a new record.
I was at this race. If not the closest race, it was for sure one of the COLDEST. Cold high forties low fifties damp breezy cloudy and dark and not a minute of sunshine
I'd take Al Jr. over anyone except maybe his dad! What a class act Jr. is. Being from Albuquerque, I cheered for Big Al, Bobby and Little Al. All three very nice gentlemen in person, always willing to spend time with this fan. Nothing but positive memories with them. Ferocious on the track, extremely competitive, none of them liked to loose.
1st of 3 Indy heartbreaks for Goodyear. In '95, a mistake by the pace car driver allowed him to pass it on turn 3 as he was leading and he was black-flagged. As he led going into the last lap In '97, a technical flub by the track officials showed him yellow lights on the final lap as both the green and white flags were waved and he was caught off-guard, allowing him to be passed.
Damn, that's gotta be the closest finish in any race ever, such good driving by Goodyear to catch Unser Jr. but just not close enough, literally lost by inches!
I’m starting to get into this part of the motor sports and being from the same state as Little Al I even got excited for this race even though I was in second grade when he won!
Why in blazes did the director switch cameras at the finish? Ruined the moment. Even dumber than the fool who kept showing Rick Mears' wife in '82 race.
The Andretti curse? Both Mario and Michael would put those cars and their engines to their very limits from the drop of the green flag. Never thought once about saving their equipment for the end. And Marco picked up where Mario and Michael left off.
To be fair, Penske won in 1979, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1991. 7 out of 13 is pretty dominant. It was just better on the eyes because they didn't look like clones of each other in not only chassis design but paint scheme.
Tony George was nothing but an American homer with an ego because he was a hulman and felt like he owned open wheel racing. If he could have just went some were else in indycar he could have been a lot richer but nope and now indycar is losing money because of his stupid ideas this could have be a major completion to F1.
The great-drivers make it SEEM like that. For instance. No one made ovals look as smooth as Rick Mears. He was the master. However it takes skill, determination, focus, precision, stamina, AND power to win this race. Especially back in those days.
Woah, the race wives/girlfriends were shown only once during the last 6min of the race. Guess the sports director and producers received enough hate-mail to not make that same mistake again.
@@fighterjetsteve There are a lot of ways to cheat in a racecar. Never heard of intentionally wrecking? Have you ever heard of Nelson Piquet and "Crashgate"? Or Michael Waltrip using rocket fuel in his racecar?
@MichaelClark-uw7ex yeah? If you think Al Unser Jr intentionally crashed in the 89 500? You're full of 💩. Either one of those guys would tell you......that's racing.....you're an idiot.
Premier Jet brought me here. He would have had to wreck him to win it or get very aggresive which would have ended both up in the wall. Scott had the faster car so he would have been forgiven. He must like the guy or something. Oh well, Bro's before Indy 500 Trophy's? F%#@ that!
I remember watching this live. Each successive lap the excitement grew. I wish racing was like this today.
Me too. Dale sr won his 5th and Senna was on fire. Definitely great racing at the time.

I keep watching this race over and over and I never get tired.
No matter how many times I see this race it still gives me goosebumps.
Now that's what real Indycar was all about! Great cars, great sound, exciting racing. Can't see this today...
Watching Goodyear on the last lap pinching that beast all the way down to the grass below the apron in every corner is classic BALLS. Oh and in dirty air. Awesome stuff
These engines sound amazing I remember watching this great great finish
The commentary couldn't have been better if it had been scripted, the greatest final laps of the greatest race ever.
Al was my favorite driver when I was a kid and I was so pumped when he won this race!
Those cars look like they could compete today. Nearly 30 years later.
love those Unser boys. Growing up right next to Pikes Peak, they were huge idols of mine.
One of the, if not THE best finish of an Indy 500 ever.
2006 Hornish catching up and passing Marco

Yeah this was awesome. IndyCar racing now I just can’t get into. The cars are so ugly and sound terrible.
I still remember watching this on TV in 1992, when I was but 8 years old. I also remember seeing it on about a zillion replays on ESPN, too.
Steven Manning me too. almost the same age as well. we barely got cable TV not long before this race.
races like these got me into racing.

Great work there by the director cutting away just as they crossed the finish line.
Man, these engines... Outstanding.
The days of beautiful cars; lots of tire, engine, and chassis combinations; full stands; and the lovely turbo whine. All destroyed by Tony George.
It's great to watch cars pushed to the limit of the rules, rather than restrictions in danger.

Still to this day the closest Indy 500 finish in history.

Kodak sold a poster of the finish that looked like a Leroy Neiman painting, got it framed and it hangs on my wall, great race
I remember this race. A lot of crashes due to the cold weather and the tires could get no grip. At least the final laps were great.
I was so happy Little Al got it done
I was there..
It was intense... :-)
2:07. The classic al Unser jr double head nod checking his mirrors. Goose bumps anyone. 😀😀
Scott Goodyear started in last place on the grid, one The best 500 miles!!!!
The Unser family what a group of racers..
Fantastic
GLORY DAYS of (imo) was the greatest race in the world.
the more time you have between your memories the better your memories feel like afterwards.

Mark Mckinney welcome aboard. Indy racing is awesome.
The speeds were amazing the cars looked so so fast
Why in blazes did the director switch cameras at the finish? Ruined the moment. Even dumber than the fool who kept showing Rick Mears' wife in '82 race.
Lol they showed his wife just as Mears made his move on Johncock
No Kidding! At the absolute climax of the race, they switched cameras.
It was probably the same fool.
6:36 you’re welcome
yay a win for New Mexico my home state wahoo
4:52 Someone needs to be fired from the cameraman job.
They covered the full view of the finish on instant replay at 6:36. Next...
Goodyear never got side-by-side the way Rick Mears got side-by-side with johncock on the White Flag lap in the 82 race still the greatest race ever
I was there too great day in my life
The track was so much cleaner then without view-blocking, greed-driven suites along Tower Terrace.
Nice camera work at the line
Right!? Way to show the fucking flagman instead of the closest finish in Indy history. Bunch of stoops!
Greatest auto race ever but you had to be heartbroken for Michael Andretti
And 5 years earlier, his dad dominated the race (led 170 of 177 laps) before his car broke down.
No... No ya didn't. I always thought he was a big-time whiner.
The Andretti curse? Both Mario and Michael would put those cars and their engines to their very limits from the drop of the green flag. Never thought once about saving their equipment for the end. And Marco picked up where Mario and Michael left off.
What made this even sweeter is that Michael Andretti had dominated the first 3/4's of this race, until he cooked his engine.
And Mario Andretti was fastest in practice.... crashed out. Very bad day for Andretti family. Jeff crashed out bad too.
I wonder what Big Al was thinking/feeling watching the race in front of him?
I'm sure he was as proud as any father would be.
The 2 thumbs down came from Scott Goodyear Lol
I think Michelle Mouton.
He could not win from here,on pikes peak.
Michael Andretti was the other.
Al Unser Jr. is my cousin.
Valvoline always had good looking race cars
That,s when indy was going 231mph,and it was not won every year by a too dominate team like today........it was better racing,,,more competitave

cart was unsustainable, as proven by all the times they were hauled into bankruptcy court.
Was there incredible day
Big Al came home third in this race ...
Amazing. His son first too. Beautiful. That doesn't happen often.
In his fifties I believe as he was 47 when he won in 87
the only reason I'm watching this is because me and al are both from new mexico
That's cool
The only reason im watching this is because Scott and me are from Canada
O maior de todos os tempos
What engines did they have? They seem to rev pretty higher than now
13,000+ RPM.
"Scott Goodyear comes up a loser at the Indy 500" isn't a unique statement.
Al's dad finished third in 1992!!
My dad watched this race in 3 different states lol
They missed the finish live by switching camera shots.
My 1st 500.
About froze to death.
Could a 60+ years old Mansell or Fittipaldi still race at ovals like Indy? Because it looks as if you don't need stamina or power, just precision.
The great-drivers make it SEEM like that. For instance. No one made ovals look as smooth as Rick Mears. He was the master. However it takes skill, determination, focus, precision, stamina, AND power to win this race. Especially back in those days.

How anyone thinks watching cars going round and round in a circle is entertaining is beyond me.
I remember being 9 years old watching this with my dad wanting Goodyear to win because my dad thought Little Al and his dad were cheaters.
They were, in 89 Jr. intentionally tried to crash Fittipaldi and wrecked himself.
