My all time favorite race ending. Even given the pass on the next to last restart, Andretti had nothing with which to challenge Mears at the conclusion of the race. Mears had improved his car all day, and had it perfect at the end. But that double exchange of the lead was the most exciting racing I had ever seen. I was sitting just at the entrance of turn 1, in grandstand B.
This 500 confirmed Rick Mears status as one of, if not the greatest Indy 500 champion of them all. No doubt that Rick would've won at least one more if the mounting injuries hadn't begun to take their toll and forced his retirement after the '92 season.
I'm an And retro guy from way back, my eyes tell me Rick sits atop the MT if were talking Indy & I don't care what happens going forward. The competition was amazing, you still had all the big names from the 60s running well & young drivers that wanted to leave their mark. And Rocket retired w/ gas left in the tank.
A great champion! I always wondered why the commentators gushed over Michael's move at almost full speed for a whole lap but were speechless after Mears did the same thing a full speed! Fastest T1 entry of the day on that lap, a master class!
Rick Mears is the best driver ever at Indy he should had won in 1982 if he was just a little more patient he could have gotten by Gordy, remember that was his only 4th 500 and winning at his 2nd try in 1979!
Rick Mears passing Michael in turn one after Michael passed him. Michael was down below the white line and Rick still passed him..The quite Giant! Rick Mears! Probably the best of all time! Shawn.
Funny how the place was packed this year, cheering crowds, etc. Quit pretending the past was better, simply because you experienced it... You had nothing to do with it.
Michael was aggressive, using the strength to win the race, but Mears was much much better than him. Is looks like a boy against a very experience, that knows all the ways of the track, main points, while the other one, came with impulse, anyway. 6:57
Man, I miss those cars like the PC-20, and Rick Mears!

My dad was there sitting in the same spot. He said those passes were so exciting to watch.
Bobby and Sam so busy trying to out do each other describing how great Michael’s pass they didn’t even see Mears was about to pass Andretti.
The verbal fellatio on Andretti's pass was funny. They were gaga over it, I thought Rick's pass was slightly better. Rick was the man.

Andretti
Mears is the greatest Indianapolis 500 driver ever. Clean, fast and respected. He only ever crashed out of the race once.
Rick Mears would run over my right foot with his golf cart not long after this - another Indy story!
Look at those crowds back in the early 90's HUGE!
I mean, the stands were full this year too...
Quit crapping on the present because you're too busy pining for the past...
@@codymoe4986 250,000 thats it i saw plenty of empty seats, back then 400 to 500 thousand not even close!

I don't think they realized what was happening, before it was ivee

If you look closely as he passes Andretti he's leaving a tire mark on the right side of the car. He was totally on the edge!

I think we would all agree that having the apron made some great racing.
Deadly too.
Rocket Rick🔥
Two of the best
What better race to sum up the Andretti Curse than this one - Mears won the race with a broken foot
The curse doesn’t apply here
Mikey was simply facing a better driver in better equipment
And a broken wrist.
And he made the pass on top of the skid marks he made a few days before in a crash that could have easily killed him.
Back when The 500 was still an exciting event to experience live. The irl truly messed this place up - it is a shame.

@@codymoe4986the past years were amazing but to be honest the Indy 500 is always amazing in my eyes!!
I was there in the Snake Pit
Oval Master!
Any chance of getting the entire 1976 race on you tube?
I don't think an entire copy of the TV broadcast is known to exist of 1976.
his wife was hot
Yes, Chris Mears was hot.

Mears did this with a broken foot, let that sink in.
And his throttle foot!

Mears was faster, not better..
Michael the greatest never to win Indy!
1:21 can anyone read lips? What’s sandi Andretti saying? Lol
tell me please!

Now, that's how those car's suppose to sound, 🏁not like those sewing machines they have now, they sound terrible!💩👈🧐💯
