Bette Davis's performance is first class. She came up with that very unflattering look herself. She's only 54 here 😯
"Joe The Lion" she looks younger than that in this movie, though creepy, and demented.
@obscurelyvague Younger 😆 are you kidding?
She's supposed to be creepy and demented 👍
She is over the top hilarious😍
This movie deserves all the awards.
An outstanding thriller with two of the greatest acting divas of their times.
Agreed❕
Crawford stunning no makeup. Davis had no problem being grotesque for a good film. Whatta coupla broads love them more and more. This is real hollywood, kids 😎🌟
Blanche going round in circles in her wheelchair going crazy is so terribly sad
Going crazy? No. Anxiety. Not going crazy. Was she crazy at the finishing of the story/film. No. It was Jane who lost her mind, crazy, at the finish of the story. At the beach.
It was a very effective scene.
One of Joan's great scenes 👍
"CHRISMED2" Yes she is helpless.
It’s very similar to that scene she did in Strait-Jacket where she gets trapped in the striped closet. They’re both shot from above and give a dizzying effect.
I miss having access to TCM. I miss a lot of things that I took for granted back when I was growing up in a dysfunctionally imaginary middle class family.
1:38 LMAO Bette’s laugh is so contagious and legendary!
Still gives me the creeps!
It's more like a CACKLE!
What would you do if you were Blanche? I can't be sure but I sometimes think that if I were in Blanche's situation. I would try and turn the tables so-to-speak and get a good laugh on her. Maybe eat the rat (or at least take the skin and meat off and leave the bones ) and tell Jane that it was delicious and that she has to try some sometime too.
Indeed. I remember watching this two days after I had my appendectomy (when open appendectomies were the norm).
I busted out laughing and then immediately regretted the pain. But I couldn’t stop laughing.
A pretty nasty smokers laugh!!
Both are truly phenomenal.
This movie is definitely a spine chiller and when you watch it'll never be forgotten I remember seeing this when I was 5 years old I'm 55 now just the other week I found an old movie poster had a sale of this movie what did it bring back some memories definitely haunting
Two of the most talented actresses of all time !
its the really heavy way Davis walks....Brilliant.
I think Joan should have been nominated for an Oscar too.
Yes,thank you for saying it
Well as it turns out they were both nominated for the BAFTA for Best Foreign Actress.
I agree. Though Davis has the more flamboyant role, Crawford’s quieter, more subtle performance is of no less quality. Oddly enough, though, had I been a member of the Academy, my vote for 1962 would have gone to Katharine Hepburn for “Long Day’s Journey Into Night,” a staggering performance unfortunately not seen by many people.
@@Kjt853 Anne Bancroft was simply unbeatable that year as Anne Sullivan in "The Miracle Worker".
Not that I believe this to be true, but Bette supposedly claimed that she lost out in 1950 for "All About Eve" because her co-star, Anne Baxter, was also nominated, and they split the vote between them, allowing Judy Holliday to win. Perhaps Bette was relieved that Joan did not get nominated as well in the hope of avoiding another split vote? No matter, nobody was going to beat Anne Bancroft that year for "The Miracle Worker".
The look Blanche gives and shudder like ‘she wouldn’t’, ‘she didn’t’ 😂🐀
I like to think that this was the same reaction for Bette and Joan when the 1963 Oscar nominations came out.
Came out? Announced. The nominations were announced.
I like to think. 🙄 Notional thinking.
@@zyxw2024 chill out
Come out also means release, publish, become known.so,it's not wrong at all to use it.
Her laugh !!!
Hahahahahaha

Terrible phone for film reviews.
This film is magnificent. If Hitchcock had directed it, it would've been even better.
I don't think so - those women made this movie what it is . Hitchcock would never had let them have any creative control .
@@fayedavis2569 Was Hitchcock a control freak?
@@obscurelyvague yes and a misogynist
Yes I agree. Two absolute legends Davis and Crawford working together equals perfection. These women don’t need any help from anybody. They represent independence!
No it wouldn't at all Bob Aldrich does an amazing job!
I saw this as a kid and it is legit a core memory I think about to this day
Same here
That cackling sick laugh in the end finally brings it home.
Davis knew the more twisted, grotesque and demented, the more effective her character would be.
BTW --- for a movie made in the early 60's the sound effects were some of the best I've heard, the clarity even surpasses some modern flicks.
Director Robert Aldrich and his sound effects team really delivering
I love that part! She totally lost it and went bat shit crazy completely 😂😂😅
Or rat shit crazy ☺️
*Best laugh in the cinema!*
Best laugh. Just repeating each other's comments. You won't ever critique films, anything.
Joan and Bette were both so very outstanding. (And also Maidie Norman who played Elvira and Victor Buono the piano player). Unfortunately The Miracle Worker with Anne Bancroft was also released, so Bette did not get the Academy Award although Joan accepted the statue for Anne.
This was free on TV when I was a kid. Lol yes I'm old oh oh oh
Yes, you are 😶
@@lordakiasantiago7562 thanks for confirming
Saw it with you too! Actually it was at the movies when I was a kid
Same here..
"Andrea" But you did not see it in a movie house.
RIP OL GIRLS...🙏❤🙏
Both women great actresses legendary and both hated each other their feud is what made this movie so amazing and a classic
At least she garnished it with tomatoes
Lol
Lmao
It's all about the presentation.
@@romerjusu3804moon.sixpencemovielauranceolivier..please
Well, you gotta garnish the plate. I understand.
Davis knew this was a black comedy. Crawford thought it was a serious drama. Add it up, and you get the most delicious camp classic ever.
They both knew that it was horror.
What a movie, 2 great actresses, enough said!
Fantastic scene.
Stunning Masterpiece!
Everyone seems to be amused by Bette’s laugh and by Joan’s spinning around in the chair. It’s never had that effect on me. It was always disturbing to me and if anything made me feel sorry for Blanche and cemented in my mind that the character of Jane was one CRAZY bitch!!!! lol
It sounds like you didn't watch it through to the end...
@@DanielWesleyKCK i have. That doesn’t change the fact that she was nuts and so was this behavior.
@@EphemeralProductions The character Jane Hudson was also alcoholic
@@obscurelyvague yep
I think it's a #TeamBette thing. I am for sure Team Bette... but yes, the scene is one of the most twisted things I've ever seen in a movie! I just love Bette...
“She’s got Betty Davis…..rats”. 💀🎵🎼
LMAO!
She's precocious, she knows just what it takes to make a rat blush
@@morbidlyobeserobocop3038 All the Joans, think she’s a spy.
That didn't take much acting. Bette Davis really was laughing at Joan.
That maniacal laugh Davis did ...how does anybody perform that well on cue?!
The same reason she really kicked the s**t out of Crawford in another scene. They hated each other.
I wonder if Crawford knew what was underneath that tin? Her horrified reaction might well be genuine. And Bette's response for real, as it really does seem as if she's laughing her socks off in sheer delight! A brilliant unforgettable scene! Both deserved Oscars.
You have to believe Bette Davis truly enjoyed doing this scene!😆 She probably asked the director to do multiple takes!
Wauuuu great actresses
Alaska and Alyssa brought me here
One of my favorite movies growing up, along with Mommy Dearest
Props for that laugh
I saw this on TV aged 10. The big "reveal" the rat remains the creepiest thing I've ever seen, but wasn't a pet parrot killed too? The fact that Crawford and Davis loathed one another in real adds just another wonderful note.
True classical movie
Me encanta esta película. Bette Davis y Joan Crawford eran dos grandes actrices.
This is how pycopaths behave. Very scary.
But it is acting. Not for real. That's why they are Hollywood legends.
Great thriller!
Hulu brought me here, click here thats how you got here too. 🤣 Fued The story of Joan and Betty
And all that time…..”they could have been friends”🤨🤨🤨
Got the same dinner at Denny’s last night.
Two grazy made a film
They had oviosly so much fun together
no, they hated each other
What I found very interesting about this movie is that the director is the same as the Movie the 'Dirty Dozen'....
My sister loves playing this one out
Great film
That's me in 20 years time 😂😂
It was actually said that Betty Davis convinced the crew her dislike for Joan Crawford was just that strong. Ironically, it was Joan Crawford who believed that Betty Davis would have been the best person to play opposite her and that role.
Betty Davis plays an EXCELLENT game of psycho.
When she laughs hysterically is just brilliant!!!!😂😂
“I’m baby Jane Hudson.”
Oh,poor Joan crawford. My job bette davis laugh. I liked it 🎉
joan crawford aimlessly spinning around in her wheel chair was the funniest part.
I found it horrible!
I don't know why they kept this scene in. It really ruins the mood of the movie and makes Joan Crawford look like an idiot.
@@fliplinefungus No! I would not change a thing lolz! It would ruin the campy-ness of it all
@@fliplinefungus You clearly don't understand the story. This is a very effective and disturbing scene. What do you want Blanche to do? Casually disregard what has just happened and sit quietly?
@@Cosford869 Yes the scene emphasizes Blanche being trapped n a situation she can not get out of.
My grandmaolookwd just like Bette Davis and she was nutty too
PATIENTS IN NURSING HOMES SO SAD
I didn’t bring you your breakfast…because you didn’t eat your tin tin!
Jane was a washed up forgotten child star turned alcoholic, and couldn't stand the fact that even though an accident ended Blanches acting career, she was still loved by her fans who sent her letters and cards in the mail.
This movie scared me
I am at Laguna Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center in Laguna Hills California I am in a wheelchair and cannot walk I'm alone and this is how I feel when they bring me dinner
I hope Blanche likes it medium rare 😆 😆 😆
Blanche should have known that even before Jane mentioned the rats in the cellar, there was going to be trouble. Jane was being just TOO happy and nice. By the way, even though it was only a movie, I wonder if Christina Crawford got kicks out of seeing her mother abused on the screen like this. 😅
Christina Crawford is laughing her ass off during the airing of this film.
Pure utter acting genius
Crawford wasn't bad either.
_-AEROSMITH-_
"Rats In The Cellar"
"James Frank" After Jane said those words you somehow knew what was going to happen when Blanche lifts the dinner-tray cover.
When this scene was filmed, according to the Mommie Dearest movie, Alfred Steele had died and Joan demanded her place on the board of directors, then Christina was a struggling actress. 1959-1968 to be precise.
Christina has been proven to be a liar.. She WISHED she was fabulous as her mother.
I’m no thanks I think I’ll pass on dinner
Bette was only 54 in this?! Boy did they make her look like a hag for the character lol
She did. Bette did her own makeup.
A risada da Jane é de bruxa 😮
My husband has me trapped also
"Kimberlee Swisher" Hope you find a way out.
I hate to see if we had bat in the attic..🍹
"Oh, by the way Blanche, I had to fire gardener today."
Bette once told Celeste Holm that she couldn't "laugh on cue" = B.S.!
I like rat parmesan!!
That’s one plump rat! Enough there to feed a small family.
male voice over, and large text on Screen. "RAT..... ITS WHATS FOR DINNER"
Blaan-che? Your sister went to SOO much trouble to fix you this... Scrumpcious Buffet!
Marjorie Bennett played mom to Victor Bouno and did a great Cockney accent; a critic though it was awful, but I disagree
I think you'll find he's very well qual-ee-fied!!
Lol
That's so funny , next time be ware to accuse your sister of being crazy because you will get rats garnished with tomato's for din din ...lol hahahahahahahaaaa evil laugh 😈😈😈
What's the big deal, In some places in the world rat is a delicacy.
"Al Cahallic" I'm not sure if those rats are the same as the ones that are in more-urban settings or in suburban settings. Those are really not safe to eat. Of course I am not an expert either.
Maybe they are ones found in forests or in jungles which snakes and owls and monitor lizards eat.
How many great people become virtual prisoners due to their mental and physical infirmities, its not much different than this (minus the rats).
