it's even more shocking because you knew the bomb will go off, even tho there is still a little doubt on "will it go off?" that's the "bomb under the table" theory on how to create tension by Hitchcock.
The bag was placed right at Hitler's feet according to eyewitness accounts, and supposedly someone who wanted to rub elbows with Der Furer moved the bag to the other side of a heavy oaken table support.
He knew there was only a certain chance of success. Whatever that chance was, 30%, 50%, lol maybe only 5%, but he made clear in the movie that there had to be at least some chance of success. But he also do that he had to try something.
Well Stauffenberg is Fegelein's associate, and Fegelein will take over the Reich once Hitler is pranked dead. Stauffenberg basically will be Fegelein's pawn when Fegelein succeeds.
It's amazing how Hitler survived the blast with just a few minor injuries. A blown ear drum, a severely sprained wrist and some minor cuts and burns to his legs. That was some table!
Also when he was a trench runner in the Great War he had a bombshell explode just a few meters away, killing multiple people, but he was only injured by shrapnel in the face and leg. He escaped near certain death too many times to count.
Supposedly, not portrayed well enough in the movie, the table had one enlongated solid leg on the ends, not the single wood plank it shows here. It was probably a really nice table even for the makeshift fort they had assembled here, but it (supposedly) didn't have as much space from top-to-bottom as shown here.
Hitler had a lot of strange coincidences on his side on that day that saved his life: 1) Colonel Stauffenberg took not one, but TWO bombs with him on that day. But due to his handicap (one eye and no right hand), he had trouble arming them both in time for the meeting. But he didn't think much of it because he expected one bomb to be more than enough as the meeting was taking place in Hitler's underground concrete bunker. 2) Due to it being an unusually hot day, the meeting was moved from the underground bunker (which had no windows and thus no way for blast force to escape) to the wooden cabin with several windows which were open. It drastically reduced the effectiveness of the plastic explosive that Colonel had brought. 3) Stauffenberg had left the briefcase right beside Hitler's foot to maximize the damage. But moments before the bomb went off, Hitler had asked one of his aides to move Stauffenberg's briefcase on the opposite side of the table because it interfered with his foot. This reduced the the amount of damage the bomb could inflict on Hitler even further. 4) The table was a heavy oak wood table. At the time of the blast, Hitler was almost completely leaning on top of it. The sturdy construction of the table top shielded him from the blast, only delivering a few facial injuries and to his legs from splinters and fragments of the table. Even if he had survived, Operation Valkyrie may have succeeded. But the blast interfered with the phone lines so the news of assassination (or potential assassination) did no reach Berlin in time, and the conspirators delayed their actions, allowing Hitler's inner circle to regroup and turn the tide. Had one of those things gone differently, we are talking about history in a completely different way. But like Beck had said "This is a military operation, nothing ever goes according to plan." Sigh.
Col. Brandt knocked the briefcase over twice. It was in his way, that's why he moved it. Had both explosive charges gone off as was originally planned then Hitler most shuredly wouldn't have survived. Instead, all he got were some minor cuts and burns, a badly sprained right wrist and a blown ear drum.
@@beachbunny8021 I mean it’s probably a bit of creative license there. There doesn’t seem to be any evidence past circumstantial that the bag was ever moved. It’s just a theory. I suspect he only lived because they changed the meeting place to an area where the bomb was less effective.
@@JustHereForTheDialogue the Gestapo conducted a thorough investigation. They questioned everyone that survived and that attended the briefing that day. It was Col. Brandt who knocked over the briefcase twice. It was in his way so he picked it up and moved it. He was standing next to Col. Staufenberg that day at the table. Once Staufenberg left the room to take that bogus phone call, Brandt moved down into the space that was occupied by Staufenberg. That's when he first knocked over the briefcase then later moved it to the other side of the table leg. As Col. Staufenberg was leaving the wolf's lare that day he ditched the second explosive charge on the road side, and that's where the Gestapo later found it. When it was all over some 2000 people were executed in connection with the assassination attempt.

I could be mistaken, but as far as I know plastic explosive is incredibly stable. I believe you need to use a specific detonation device to make it go off, not sure a proximity explosion would do it. Again could be wrong though as I know there’s such a thing as proxy detonations.
I believe it’s because Stauffenburg’s handicaps (one-eyed and one handed) made it difficult for him to arm the bombs, so he was only able to get one working in time for the plan
After all that stuff that Hitler’s Generals told him, this is what I like to think he was thinking: “Well that’s just great. I don’t know how things could possibly get any worse.”
Been a while since I saw the entire film, but I don’t think the conspirators considered how conspicuous it would look to leave so abruptly. Stauffenberg was already hustling to his car before the bomb went off. It was also highly unusual for a ranking officer to forget his headgear and be seen walking outdoors without it. That sort of detail is exactly what aides are used for, to keep their boss out of trouble. Too bad the innocent getaway driver and checkpoint guards got pulled into the deception unknowingly, and surely suffered Hitler’s wrath as a result.
but there was so little time. if stauffenberg had been stuck there when they locked the place down im guessing it wouldnt have worked. i mean remember he is counting on that the bomb has killed hitler so he doesnt care if it looks suspicious or not.
true but on other hand you can look it from different perspective...Hitler had to witness Third Reich and Nazism crumble to dust completely. So in a way he suffered more from that and from betrayal of Göring and Himmler in the end....and he was completely broken man by the end of it all. That being said, so many millions of lives might have been spared if only even this last assassination attempt had been succesfull
If ONLY!!!!! If ONLY!!!! Anyway, BRILLIANT movie (so well made, with only a few historical errors) with a good deal of accuracy. For instance, the varying styles of Waffenfarbe or 'uniforms' worn by the different ranks and duties, SUPERB detail! Ausgezeichnet.
Random trivia but the speaking general is referring to what is now known as "Operation Bagration". German high command was fooled and Hitler was furious.
It really would not of accomplished anything at this point the allies wanted Germany down especially Soviets. Than you have to consider there wad still brutal war in the Pacific.
This was a brilliant scene, had me on edge even though I know the outcome. The saddest scene was still the one where they played out what would have happened the the assassination goes well. Thousands could have been spared.
at 2:07 you see someone falling out of the window and they said Fellgiebel saw that Hitler had survived this explosion so I'm guessing that body could be Hitler himself
He should have rushed back into it and made sure hitler was dead. Nobody knew he was the culprit anyway and would just seen him as a first line responder.
Officers who planned the assassination attempt : "you!!!?? you're supposed to be dead" Hitler : "when you made the assassination attempt on me, you forgot a very important thing I am Adolf Hitler mate"
I have Orders from the Fuhrer! That line could get you in a lot of places back then :-) , I mean who is going to ring the Fuhrer to make sure? Am i right!
An explosion of this magnitude alone can hardly do lethal damage unless you are standing right next to it. It's shrapnel (metal shards propelled in high speed by the explosion) that kill most people. They should have thought of that.
I doubt it would’ve made any difference, Hitler was largely shielded from the blast by a thick oak table. Their original plan (as noted in the film) was actually to have it explode in a sealed concrete bunker. While the explosion itself may not have done it, the shockwave and air pressure in such a constrained environment certainly would have.

Again could be wrong though as I know there’s such a thing as proxy detonations.
I believe it’s because Stauffenburg’s handicaps (one-eyed and one handed) made it difficult for him to arm the bombs, so he was only able to get one working in time for the plan
Could you imagine being that man, in that moment. So intense!!!
After all that stuff that Hitler’s Generals told him, this is what I like to think he was thinking:
“Well that’s just great. I don’t know how things could possibly get any worse.”
0:50 The Guard in the backround doesn't seem to care that Staufenberg leaves after like 2 seconds
Tom Cruise in his best role and performance👍
Been a while since I saw the entire film, but I don’t think the conspirators considered how conspicuous it would look to leave so abruptly. Stauffenberg was already hustling to his car before the bomb went off. It was also highly unusual for a ranking officer to forget his headgear and be seen walking outdoors without it. That sort of detail is exactly what aides are used for, to keep their boss out of trouble. Too bad the innocent getaway driver and checkpoint guards got pulled into the deception unknowingly, and surely suffered Hitler’s wrath as a result.
Hey have you seen all the comments on your 5 year old comment from “Red Dawn”
The one where you said that Russian tanks didn’t travel without any support elements
but there was so little time. if stauffenberg had been stuck there when they locked the place down im guessing it wouldnt have worked. i mean remember he is counting on that the bomb has killed hitler so he doesnt care if it looks suspicious or not.
If Staffenburg just armed one of the bombs and put the other in the bag, the Shockwave from the first bomb would’ve set the other one off
Stick a few sticks of dynamite and many bullets pointed every which away in the bag.
Yeah that’s possible
Ethan Hunt is the descendant of Stauffenberg and he vowed never to fail a mission lol
This is how Germans do pranks
Excellent film. A must watch. Incredibly suspenseful even though we all know what happened to Hitler.
We left to South America and died of old age
@@cartelplug8183 lol
@@cartelplug8183 even if he did escape he would die of cancer not old age
Thats the thing no one knows for certain what happened to hitler
Balls of steel for doing this
Respect
It's as if some dark force was protecting him. So many near misses.
true but on other hand you can look it from different perspective...Hitler had to witness Third Reich and Nazism crumble to dust completely. So in a way he suffered more from that and from betrayal of Göring and Himmler in the end....and he was completely broken man by the end of it all.
That being said, so many millions of lives might have been spared if only even this last assassination attempt had been succesfull
Remmy easy, anyone with common sense
80 years ago today...
Such an anxiety filled scene
When he noticed Hitler still alive...
He said... it was a prank
It was a social experiment.
Tom Cruise is an exceptional actor

Jajajajajaja😂
I don't get what the meeting was all about but seemed like a blast in the end
The only mission Tom Cruise ever failed.
There is another universe that this plot succeeded.
1:05 - An angry rant at a strategic meeting actually served some purpose to Hitler for once
What a strengh
I'm not sure if Mercedes would like that product placement lmao
Whoever made that table knows quality though
This is one of my favorite scenes from any movie, not just this one.
They don't make tables like that anymore.
Moving that briefcase over just a foot to behind the thick wooden leg saved Hitler in that explosion.
2:15 He forgot his hand
Stauffenberg was eyeless and handless😭
Hitler: Survives 44 Failed Assassination attempts.
Hitler: What the hell... Wolf! How did it that not died?
Wolf: Wha.... ITS A *IMPOSSIBLE!*
The suspense pays off at 2:02
Imagine how different the world would be had they succeeded
Yeeah we could had kept the Soviet pigs at bay.
Random trivia but the speaking general is referring to what is now known as "Operation Bagration". German high command was fooled and Hitler was furious.
Just imagine waiting for that call with a bomb ticketing below your feet
2:00 JUMSCARE ALERT...!!!!!💣💥
The driver at 2:25 looks like Brock Lesnar!

If that brief case were not moved, it would have saved as many as 12 million lives
Qaisar Jan buy this time in the war most of the damage had already been done.
Qaisar Jan No it wouldnt
Max W. No, there were still many millions to die and a lot of destructions to made. The last months were the most brutal ones.
It really would not of accomplished anything at this point the allies wanted Germany down especially Soviets. Than you have to consider there wad still brutal war in the Pacific.
@@mladtheimpaler More Germans died in the following 10 months after this event than the preceding 4 years
This was a brilliant scene, had me on edge even though I know the outcome. The saddest scene was still the one where they played out what would have happened the the assassination goes well. Thousands could have been spared.
Or, those thousands may have just died anyway.
Actually one of the best acting gigs of Tom Cruz. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
2:45 The music and cinematography give us an excellent scene.
what is the name of the soundtrack plays after the explosion? I couldn't find it in the official sountrack list
Burak Yakup "Seconds Lost"
THANK YOU SO MUCH
😉
This wasn't a war film, it was a testament to good carpentry LOL ;)
"Long live sacred Germany!!!"
Absolutely best and most intense scene of the movie
One of the great movies i have ever seen, i highly recommend watching it!!!
We need a Moscow version.
Unbelievable movie , Loved it!
Always watch your circle, you never know when a rat sneaks in and leaves something under your table
at 2:07 you see someone falling out of the window and they said Fellgiebel saw that Hitler had survived this explosion so I'm guessing that body could be Hitler himself
That wasn’t Hitler the uniform is different to the rest and also he wasn’t by the window but I think by the door
All jokes aside, this guy is a really hero for tried to kill the worst leader in the world. Respect for him
There have been worse
@@braziliantsar once you get to the level of killing millions, there is no "worse" or "better".
@@braziliantsar No there haven't
@@braziliantsar Yeah
Theres been way worse than hitler
He should have rushed back into it and made sure hitler was dead. Nobody knew he was the culprit anyway and would just seen him as a first line responder.
Officers who planned the assassination attempt : "you!!!?? you're supposed to be dead"
Hitler : "when you made the assassination attempt on me, you forgot a very important thing
I am Adolf Hitler mate"
Savvy?
Had he placed the second charge in the bag, regardless if it had a fuse in it, history would be very different
Masterpiece...
They should’ve put some steel ball bearings and twisted iron spikes in there.
@@rekunta
What does a shockwave do too the human body in a closed off room like that?
@@Dwight_ I’m no doctor, but I’d imagine it would go right through it, bursting organs and tissue to a very quick death.
@@Dwight_its like soundwaves. if you shoot a gun in a closed space it deals more damage to your ears than outside. same with shockwaves. the impact on a body in a closed space is bigger. it destroys your organs and there would be reflections
It’s just a prank bro
The prank: 2:02
I forgot Eddie Izzard was in this, what a legend
I consider this Bryan Singers best work.
Even know we know the outcome they did a good job at making this scene intense
Tom Cruise looks like a younger Governor from the walking dead
Not only Cars the German table's are also of great quality😊👍
