CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Major Remer (Thomas Kretschmann) comes to arrest Goebbels (Harvey Friedman), a phone call from Hitler turns the tide.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
At the absolute height of World War II, German generals hatch a daring plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler and effectively render the German war machine impotent. Directed by Bryan Singer, Valkyrie stars Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the real-life mastermind behind the elaborate plot known as Project Valkyrie: a plan to assassinate Hitler and overthrow his government from the inside. Stauffenberg has been a loyal soldier and an asset to the Reich for his entire military career, but after losing an eye, a hand, and three fingers in an Allied bombing, he reaches a breaking point. The destructive madness that his country is unleashing on the world has become too terrible for the colonel to stand silent. He joins the resistance movement -- a treasonous act, punishable by death -- and risks his life and the life of his family for the chance to change history. Comprised of high-ranking officials working in secret, the German Resistance has access to the inner workings of the government and military, putting them in the perfect position to dispatch the dictator and then use his own official contingency plan to seize power -

Such a well done scene, and it's completely accurate to what really happened. Despite Hitler surviving the blast, this was really the moment the Coup failed.
Albert Spheer was also present and gave his account of it.
I still don't understand the scene, how Hitler didn't die on the blast.
@@mdnazmul-vm9ib Hitler survived because at the last moment, another officer noticed Stauffenberg's briefcase, and out of an abundance of caution, moved it to the other side of one of the conference table's large, wide legs. This action, combined with the room the meeting was in (many windows) saved Hitler's life. Scientific tests have been done on the effects of the explosives in that situation, and the evidence strongly supports that if A) the Briefcase was not moved and/or B) The meeting was held in the concrete bunker as originally planned, Hitler would have died.
@@mdnazmul-vm9ib One of the officers in the room with Hitler accidentally knocked over the briefcase and put it back on the other side of the table.
Also the meeting was changed from a concrete bunker to a wood hut with windows. The windows allows force to escape instead of being concentrated inside the room.
Also, while Stauffenberg was getting the bombs ready, the other officer rushed him to get ready/dressed faster so he only went with one bomb instead of two.

Okay, so here's how things really happened:
Reimer entered the room with his adjutant, and Goebbels reminded them of their oath to Hitler. When Reimer claimed that Hitler was dead, Goebbels claimed he could prove otherwise and picked up the phone. After dialing the right number, he gave it to Reimer, and the exchange started the way it did in the film, but Hitler gave specific orders on whom to listen to, and ended the call by promoting Reimer to the rank of colonel.

After the conspirators were executed by order of General Fromm, the subtitle correctly states that Fromm himself was executed on 12 March 1945. However, because at trial he was not directly connected to the conspiracy, he was instead convicted of 'cowardice before the enemy'. For this conviction he was executed by military firing squad. Interestingly, at his death Fromm was technically a civilian, having been discharged from the Army on 14 September 1944.
It’s kind of amazing that Fromm was not able to escape whatever house arrest he was under and be able to enter territory controlled by the allies. By March 1945 Germany was collapsing and both fronts have entered Germany. Even if there were guards at fromms house, by that time I would think the guards would have been off doing more important things. Fromm ALMOST made it. He was a civilian so he wouldn’t have been tried during Nuremberg (even if the Alies found out who he was, the former reserve army general wasn’t going to be brought up on any charges). I guess in this case, karma really did get him. Even if he wasn’t participating in the plot, he was absolutely just as guilty by completely enabling them to carry out whatever they were planning
This is the moment for those of us who had any hope that Operation Valkyrie would actually succeed (even though we knew it wouldn’t) was instantly crushed.

That stained glass window looks pretty cool.
The general in charge who knew about the plot panicked and began executing everyone involved despite Hitler's orders to keep them alive. Even Major Remer couldn't stop the general in his attempt to erase the witnesses. It took a big, tough SS Colonel by the name of Otto Skorzeny to arrive on the scene and stop the executions by shear brute force of his personality. But not before the main conspiracy was already shot (lucky for him actually as the survivors were tortured). The general who tried to cover his tracks was executed as well after his trial.
I didn’t know there was much about Skorzeny’s involvement in the July 20 plot, it’s VERY INTERESTING bc Skorzeny is my FAVORITE SS man after Heydrich then Hans Frank and then Skorzeny bc he got away with facing war crimes and went on to do a import/ export business in Spain 🇪🇸
He was implicated and he knew they would be tortured and the information extracted. Not so much panic as the only feasible play left.

Fact is Remar was immediately made a lieutenant colonel and never regretted.
The way this event is shown in this scene is not entirely historically accurate, despite being generally perceived to be like that. In reality, Remmer was ordered to go and arrest Goebbels and other leaders of the SS, but he wasn't sure what was going on and had doubts about the orders he was given, fearing that he might be helping the rebels if he does it. He then phoned Goebbels himself to find out and Goebbels invited him and his soldiers to come to his office to discuss it. After Remmer arrived, the rest of this scene is historically accurate, starting with moment Remmer asked for proof that Hitler was alive and Goebbels putting him through on phone.
