Bro, my door bracket broke and I called a garage door repairs person. He told me that door need to be changed and it will cost me $2200 if I dont want to change the door then I have to get the panels changed and it will cost $1200. But thanks to your video. I fixed my door by fixing $15 incl. taxes :) Thanks again!
Great video and instructions. I really appreciate the clear walk through that's about to save me a lot of money!! Reading from the comments, it seems like this is the video that just keeps giving! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video! Our garage door bracket broke off yesterday and I was debating on whether to call a garage door company or do it myself. Your thorough instructions made the bracket easy to install and only took me about 15 minutes. This repair is much sturdier than the original bracket that I had (the t shaped piece with three screws like the one that you replaced). I love you tube university! PS, i had called a garage door company yesterday evening and they still haven’t returned my call. Their lo$$.
Just FYI....the top vertical piece where the screws ripped out is called a "stile." Wife said don't jury-rig something, just call a garage repair guy. So that's what we did. Repair guy was excellent, did essentially what you show. He also told us several other things about our door, including lubricate the spring as well as the rollers, hinges, the obvious stuff. Thanks for a good video.
This happened to my VERY heavy 24" panel garage door a couple of days ago. This video helped me confirm what I assumed about attaching this reinforcement bracket to my garage door. I bought this same bracket from Amazon (Loews has it stocked also) with a Prime delivery the next day. My only issue with it is that I had to drill a couple of new holes in the bracket, as the installer of my garage door was not the best judge in placing a couple of the sheet metal screws when he installed it originally. I am handy, so this is not an issue, but it would have been nice not having to pull out my drill and bits to put more holes into the sheet metal. I had to also put shim washers on the J-hook to keep it from moving sideways during opening and closing. The J-hook pin can travel the full length of the pin on my screw opener. And...of course the opener track in not quite centered on the center of the garage door (about an inch off center), so these washers help keep the J-hook from moving back and forth on the bracket J-hook pin. What an improvement from what the Genie garage door opener came with. I am appalled that they garaged door companies use 2-3 sheet metal screws to move a VERY heavy garage door. For what these reinforcing brackets cost to make, they should include them with the new openers. Garage door service people no doubt carry a bracket with them to repair this design flaw from the GD manufactures. I am going to replace my other garage door bracket with the same very soon. Great repair fix. Thanks for the video. Everyone's install will be a little different it appears, but manageable.
Thank you so much! I just finished doing exactly the same thing you did after watching your video and feel 100% accomplished with this quick DIY project! Cheers! :D
Same thing happened this am. Your video gives me the confidence to fix on my own! Will update once the part arrives and i fix this beast!! Great video!!!
Great video. This literally just happened to me 10 minutes ago. Bracket ripped out of holes in door panel. The opener had been in use since the house was new 8 years ago. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for this bud! I recently closed my garage door on the trunk of my car, and the hinge where the opener connected broke! You've probably saved me a hundred in labour and a possible upsell!
Another note: When reattaching the J-arm to the door, try to reinstall it at the same angle it originally was or else you'll have to reset the travel limits on the operator.
You’re a lifesaver, thank you so much. I accidentally hit the spring loaded door lock, while working in the garage and I didn’t know it so, I went outside and tried to open the door later that day but, because the lock was tripped, it wouldn’t open and bent the bracket.
Thank you so very much! This was exactly what I needed. Same thing just happened to me yesterday morning. I have now ordered the parts, and will be undertaking the repair as soon as they arrive. Wooo hooo!
Hey I received the bracket u recommended, only problem my door is a hurricane rated door the cross members are only 8" apart is there a shorter bracket, since I can't reattach the cross bars
So I am really glad that you went with this kind of fixed it’s a really good fix but if you want to go beyond this fixed I would recommend disengaging your garage door from the opener look in the garage door to see how heavy it is if it’s really heavy that’s why it got ripped out the first time and it’s cheap metal of course it’s going to break overtime and adjust the door arm to a little bit more of an angle go up maybe one or two holes on the door arm and then adjust the up and down limit on the side of your lift master 3280 Belt Drive
If it's the holes in the same top panel you could try that I suppose. Since the metal is already weakened I'm not sure if it will last though. Let me know if you try it.
I had this problem this morning too. My door is vintage 1989, with a foam core construction. The inside metal "laminate" for lack of a better term, pulled off the foam core. I have nothing to screw to, so I'll need to through-bolt from the outside and use a piece of stainless or some other metal flat bar to bolt through so I have support for the inside bracket. I'd rather not have the outside hardware but don't see an option beyond replacing the entire door.
If all of the panels are identical, you might be able to take them off and swap the panels (move the panel below it to the top). It would be some work, but you could avoid putting a bolt through to the outside if it does. Good luck!
@@TopHomeowner Good idea... Why didn't I think of that? They all appear to be identical. Wondering tho, because I'll have to use the same screw holes if they will snug up as they should. If not, I guess some wood filler would fix that problem.
I did this and bought the bracket you recommended the arm that attaches to the door did not fit with the holes in the bracket I had to adjust that arm. Now the door opens really high and has let go of it a couple times. How do I fix this?????? Also sorry for my terminology I am not handy
If the arm isn't in the same place as the old one (higher or lower), you might need to just adjust how far the garage door opener "travels". Do a google search for your garage door opener brand and model and the words "travel adjustment" and you should get instructions for your specific opener. I hope this solves it for you
My garage door center stile is exactly yours, and it was bent..but I can't find a replacement part for this do you have the brand and model # of the center stile?
Thank you great info just subscribed. What's the name of the piece that holds the end of the track together on the other side where each track ends? There are two on each side hammere to a piece of wood.
I think you're referring to the header bracket (above the door that holds the track) or the one where the arm connects is simply called the door bracket. Hope that helps!
I don't get it...the bracket to buy on the link is not adjustable like the one in the video. It's just a 21" reinforcement bracket. Am I missing something??
I'm not sure what happened but the link is working for me. Can you try it again and let me know if it's still pulling up the wrong bracket for you? Thanks
The struts came with the garage door. I'm not sure where you could buy more but I'd start with your local home improvement stores like Lowes or Home Depot. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the making this video, but the old bracket I want to replace is actually glued to the inside of the door. The glue is not easy to remove. How do I deal with this?
We did put the strut back on but this bracket is very different compared to the previous bracket. It looks like the door was damaged previous to our ownership, which is why we assume there were extra struts. First time we have come across this.
We put back any that was needed but if you look at the door it had extra already and was in the way of the new bracket so we moved it lower on the door.
Great video! One question - you took the strut off that panel as you mentioned it was in the way. Is there any concern about not putting it back on after you installed the bracket? Thanks!
Not sure but it looks like you had the original bracket connected to the garage door at a steep angle not almost up down. Opener was pulling outward instead of up/down. That would Tewa lot more force and also rip out your bracket. Just my observation.
Thank you sooooo much for this video! FYI tried the link for the product and it said link not found. Same thing just happened to me and while I don't think I could safely fix my self (girl problem lol) at least now I know it can be fixed without having to replace my garage door!!!

I have the same problem. In addition to getting the part to replace I am concerned about the cause. Did you check the alignment of the tracks? If it happens again someone can get seriously hurt.
Our problem was how it was initially installed...directly into the door. We had done some research and found that it was a common problem where they didn't use reinforcement. We also noticed that previous to our owning the property that the door may have been raised while in locked position that may have weakened it. And yes someone can get seriously injured. We watched it happen and luckily our children were not near the door as it quickly closed.
Good point. Maybe because it does last for a while... Ours failed after about 10 years. I'm sure they probably sell more garage doors that way too unfortunately.
In our situation we found that the installer screwed it directly into the door versus using the recommended brackets for reinforcement. Unfortunately this is a common situation. Hopefully this video helps to fix the issue.
Hey this is a follow-up .comment when I saw this video and ordered part. After I have fixed the problem ,wanted to thank TOP HOMEOWNER for such an excellent advice. love the work you do and help the people who can really use it. Many thanks again
Your garage door has too many struts. At most, it should have three, but yours has eight struts, which is way too many. The door probably is too heavy with that many struts, which is why the J lever pulled away from its mounting.
I really appreciate you having your daughter around while you do this. You’re a great dad and I applaud you, sir. God bless you.

Thanks for the making this video, but the old bracket I want to replace is actually glued to the inside of the door. The glue is not easy to remove. How do I deal with this?
You might be able to use a heat gun to loosen the glue. I've used that before to pull up vinyl tile that was glued to a floor.
U should add back the strut on the door for more reinforcement and so it can help for the bracket to not rip out.
That's what I woulda done also. I'm guessing they live in a high wind area by the looks of that door.
