    People complain about Prometheus and Covenant demystifying the xenomorph and space jockey, but having the derelict being made out of human DNA? I don’t think anything could destroy the mystery more than that. What an awful idea. For me, the Engineer storyline brought even more mystery. In a genre bloated with different imaginings of alien species, the Engineers still stand out as one of the more unique and fascinating. And even with the introduction of the Engineers, Prometheus still made it clear the Xenomorph predated David and maybe the Engineers themselves.

    • @TheTrveMothlord
      @TheTrveMothlord 8 месяцев назад +7

      You're spot on with implication and theory that the Xenomorphs predate the engineers. Personally there's some much freedom and creativity with the engineers in the universe. Who knew if the engineers tampered with the xenomorphs and corrupted them? Was there ever a pure Xenomorph since the ones we know grow from hosts? Is the Deacon related to the idea of an ancient xenomorph? Plus all the potential of the black goo that could give us some insane Dead Space level horror?
      I think the biggest issue is the engineers dont look like what people wanted. But personally, the engineers to me may just be another rung in the hierachy and potentially be similar to the androids humans made. Beings created to be perfect and tend to things while the creators get to sit back and be otherwise occupied with even more wild things.

    The DNA ship lost me. Kinda glad we didn't go there. Don't get me wrong, the biomech concept was much more alluring. Perhaps the pathogen's creators sought to fuse an empire of alien species with their technology, seeding the universe with life not unlike the Engineers and humans as well as cleansing world's with the Xenomorphic progeny of the pathogen when weaponised. An originator that had long since died, leaving only the living machines of their final attempt to forestall their own extinction. Perhaps the Xenomorph simply happens because a careless creator underestimated the virility of the Deacon's Blood.

    • @TheTrveMothlord
      @TheTrveMothlord 8 месяцев назад +4

      Yep, I am of a very similar mind. The engineers in my mind are the gardeners of eden left to continue their work after god has gone MIA or is busy elsewhere. The xenomorphs being a parasitic species beg the question, is there a pure xenomorph that came before a host species ever changed them? Is the deacon an ancient predecessor or something "close" to what a pure xenomorph is? I certainly like to think that the pathogen came about by trying to replicate something inside the deacon/xenomorphs and it went kind of wrong becoming more of a weapon.

    Great video Mike - another superlative Aliens piece! I liked the concept art of Bloomkamp's alien film and can see a lot of the OATS Studio feel and vibe (which I love). I feel Neil Bloomkamp leans more towards Cameron than Scott with his storytelling style - what I like about this possible version is that it seems to balance fan anticipation with some really daring albeit hard to fathom new ideas (Xenos as pioneering ship builders) Still, the idea of 'Aliens' was also kind of revolutionary compared to the first film - loads of aliens and loads of guns - it could have been a disaster. So part of me thinks a director like Bloomkamp with a great track record in bio-mechanical stories is better equipped than most to make it work.

      It's important for people to realize that much of these concept arts are just that, a concept. Artists fire off all kinds of doodles and ideas while they're developing ideas. Some get expanded while others are at the same time retracted. Plenty of the concepts we've seen would never have made it past the illustrations and this is part/parcel of that process with artists. I just learned recently that ridley and obanon in the original script had the xenomorphs evolve beyond what we see in the final movie, this was just it's first adult stage to secure survival. They where planning to show intelligence, that they could pilot spaceships and build them. They wherent just a biological weapon they where supossed to be able to repopulate the planet they where unleashed on and he the engineers next evolution of "mankind".

    For all the alien³ hate, i like it as a film; it feels almost like it was written as a theatre production in that it is mostly characters in rooms talking to each other, more like a thriller than action or horror, it containing bare few relevant examples of either. But to that point alien has been a franchise of different genres and styles. Perhaps this wasn't a great idea for a blockbuster franchise but it is in keeping with the tradition of the films to that point. Since the first film was a horror the second couldn't do that because it had already been done so they make action, which of course the third film couldn't follow without retreading all the same tropes so they took it in a different direction again; this film is more of a companion to the series for the lore nerds and fangirls without drastically affecting a wider theme of the inhumanity of humankind. Viewed through the lens of the great evil of the franchise being people, having a film comprised of prisoners set in a doomed dilapidated facility who's only chance of escaping the Star beast is via the company troopers who are literally there to kill everyone except the xenomorph and to have it caps with the death of Ripley totally underlines all of that, although it does make it something of a bummer to watch lol
    And for everyone sitting on Resurrection, it was made as a completely different format of action movie more like the over the top comic esq s films of the time and also contains a scene between two of the greatest actresses sigourney weaver and Winona Ryder play a clone and a synthetic standing in a chapel debating who isn't human which frankly could be a film all of it s own

    Hi Mike, thanks for the video. The whole problem here is that we already had Prometheus filmed, where there was black slurry. Ridley already had a script for a covenant with David playing another David's pipe. So, the question is, where did human DNA come from, if we now have the slurry from Prometheus and the covenant?) if there was a ready-made model of aliens2, if we have so much concept art, then most likely the film was at the starting point of filming. so, most likely the studio was waiting to see if Elysium would take off, but instead Elysium failed, they began to wait for covenant, otherwise they would invest 150-200 million in another film, which would also not pay off so-so. the covenant failed, district number 9 failed. Well, in principle, it’s obvious that the director was pushed aside, but! if he was pushed back, why are his ideas possibly going to be used in future films?)

    Exactly, they eliminated the connection to the sequel and basically hit reset as if part 2 never happened. and now decades later when the subject gets brought up again what happened? Scott has it burned and buried.

Like Terminator after T2, it would have been interesting to see how it would have turned out with Cameron directing but that wasn't something he was interested in doing then [he wasn't involved in Alien 3 at any point]. Well, first I wanna say, I've campaigned for years of an Alien film that retcons Alien3 & Alien Resurrection, because I never liked those sequels, only Alien & Aliens, before you say it, I've seen the Alien3 special edition, it didn't change my mind. I've also campaigned on an Alien film that would see the return of the Ripley, Hicks, Newt, and Bishop, in fact I've actually made an animated trilogy on the subject on my channel which I spent 5 years of my life on. The animation is terrible, but I gave five of years of my life to I wouldn't trade for the world. As for Blomkamp's Alien 5, it might've been weird, but I'm sure they could've taken all the weird stuff out of it and made into a cool movie, the storyboard seemed to suggest that Wey-Yu had found the Derelict on LV-26 and moved it to their headquarters at Wey-Yu Tower on Earth. Ripley, Hicks, Newt, and Bishop had found out about this and decided to infiltrate the tower and destroy the Aliens environmentalist-style, hence the bomb that was strapped to Ripley's in the storyboard. I even have a name for it, XCF, Xenomorph Countermeasure Force, which I had thought of for one of my drafts when I was writing my trilogy. Anywho, the mission goes south and the Aliens get loose, so Ripley locks down the tower to prevent the Aliens from escaping onto the planet. So our heroes and villains team up and must escape the building and destroy it before can Aliens escape. I also thought, maybe there's some kind of interstellar war going on, hence the South Korean soldier, that makes Wey-Yu want to use the Aliens to sell in arms race this war has sparked.

Disney should just do a hard reboot and only keep the Derelict, Jockey, eggs, Alien and transmission received by Earth. Ditch everything else and leave the legacy of Ripley, Newt, Hicks intact. Focus on strange frightening and horrific settings very long shots that make the audience uneasy and remove the overly fast paced action out of the franchise.. it just feels repetitive and honestly can't go anywhere new. Slow it down and creep us out, bother our brains and give us nightmares.

      He had Sigourney and Michael on board, plus even though I hate Ridley Scott, he was going to be producing, probably lending his Scott Free Films.
      You had the fans up in arms about it. They wanted it badly, and we would've loved to have seen what happened after Aliens instead of watching Ripley get tortured and destroyed in Alien 3.
      Neil's passion for the franchise and the first two movies would've made him more than a confident and competent director.
      Ridley Scott threw a bunch of salt in the game with his pole. He pushed 20th Century Fox to back out of this, and then it was just more salt in the wound when Ridley Scott's stupid movie Alien: Coincidence failed at the box office, which was also a terrible film.
      Did you know that Ridley Scott did that film just to sandbag Neil's Alien 5? That was confirmed.
      Alien 5 would've been a lot better than all the other crap we got. I'm not saying that the new Alien Romulus is going to be bad, but what happened to Alien 5 was a crime. It would have given the fans of James Cameron's action horror classic a good sendoff, even if it was a bad film, which I doubt it would have been, especially with all the passion behind it.
      Another reason why he didn't get a chance to direct Alien 5 was because of how Chappie did at the box office. I actually liked it, but for some reason, a lot of people couldn't get around those two dumbasses who played the lead anti-heroes. Yes, they were annoying, but Chappie was OK.
      Now sadly, in current canon, Newt and Hicks died terribly. The amount of story that could've been pulled from this little family, but was destroyed by the studio, is insane.
      I remember where I was when I heard that there was going to be an Alien 5 with Michael returning.
      I was in my jeep on the freeway, and when I heard it on a podcast, I went crazy. And then when I heard it wasn't going to be made, and then Ridley Scott's Alien Confused came out, I remember wanting to leave the theater halfway in.
      It should've been called Alien Fassbender.
      It was not right what they did to this Director he showed great potential for this franchise, but will never know the world that James Cameron created is what people want and it sells.
      People were excited about aliens, colonial marines, and they were amused by alien isolation.
      Once again, Cameron got the ladder treatment for some reason. Fox is indifference to Cameron's world, which is strange because it brought them a lot of money.

    My understanding of the script, would have leaned more into Newts story and her PTSD dealing with the aliens.
    Newt would have been the main protagonist, and the story would have explored her struggles with PTSD and her connection to the Xenomorphs. The film would have also introduced a new cast of characters, including a group of space marines and scientists who are investigating the Xenomorph threat.
    The plot would have likely involved a new alien outbreak, possibly on a different planet or in a different part of the galaxy, and Newt's journey to confront her past and stop the aliens once and for all. The film would have also likely explored themes of trauma, survival, and redemption, and would have featured plenty of action, suspense, and horror elements.

    If the weird ideas about the retroconned derelict and xenomorph exoarmor are factual and not just some misinterpreted detail, it wouldn't surprise me. He goes out on a limb with crazy ideas but doesn't take the audience along in the way someone like Cameron does with relatable characters and quippy dialog to guide audiences through his ideas. Throw in the ego pissing match with Scott and the Fox fallout and it's doomed.
    What the franchise needs is a quality character driven story with a fresh take on the material that isn't trying to just live under the shadow of Scott and Cameron with pandering fan service by regurgitating their imagery. Recent entries may have been flawed films, but at least they were trying a novel approach. I suspect Romulus will be the inverse of that: not as flawed, but also not original either, because it's just another love letter to Scott and Cameron.
