There have been a ton of tutorials on this song but none of them sound exactly like the Dylan studio version--until yours. I've been playing this one for a few years but I've always known my version was just "off" somehow. Looking forward to going through your version, it sounds f&%K*ng perfect.
When I first heard this song I loved how beautiful that hammer on during the G sounded. I *needed* a video that would teach the song properly and this one nailed it. Thanks a ton.
This is by far the best version on the internet. One tiny comment- it would be much more helpful (for me at least) to have the right hand zoomed in on rather than the left because the chords are easy enough to look up whereas the actual picking is very difficult to see.
thank you brother this has been my favorite song since I was a boy and I never could get the exact picking for it but youve hit the nail on the head here
Been looking at tutorials for this song for months and I haven’t committed to any of them because they didn’t sound like the original. Yours does so I’m committing the next few weeks to this. Thanks for the time you put in. 🤙
Wow thank you so much for this, I've been playing a "streamlined" version for a while and couldn't decipher what I was actually hearing on the record but this sounds perfect, looking forward to tackle that one!
This was a tough one , I've been playing it for years now...but it took me hours a day for months. But to all trying, this lessons accurate and you'll get there, great song. Break a leg , not ur thumb. Lol
I have seen this cover done many times by a capo on 5th but now playing this on 4th it sounds more to the Dylan version. Now I don't think twice, I think it's alright :).
@@BluesGuitarInstitute - real great delivery btw on your instructional walk-through of the music- great pacing and you are very talented at the picking - I will grab one of those thumb picks also for my Martin D-28- that Larivee sounds great- thanks much, will visit back often!
Thanks my man ur a super good teacher and I’ve learned a lot of tunes with you thank u it is much appreciated!! Especially deep river blues it’s hard to get the picking right on it !! But slow and steady wins the race !! Thanks for this one take care Brian !!! Ireland 🇮🇪
A lot of people think Dylan actually played this. In fact it was a session musician called Bruce Langhorne (ditto Girl from the North Country). This fact is obscured by the muddled cover notes on the 'Freewheelin' Bob Dylan' LP.
@@nickjohnson1208 No, Langhorne is quoted about this in 'Acoustic' magazine (sorry, can't remember the issue). But quite apart from anything else, have you ever heard a live performance of Dylan fingerpicking? If he was that good at it, why wouldn't he do it more often?
That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. You really think Bob would sit idly by and just sing as someone else plays the guitar? Bob would never have done that, he always plays the guitar when singing. There is also a version of the song on the Witmark demos that is fingerpicked similarly, and there were no backing musicians whatsoever on the witmark demos so you are completely wrong.
Hey, thanks a lot for making this video! Man this song is tough; the breakdowns are really helpful. One small piece of constructive criticism -- I got confused on a few parts of the intro (haven't made it to the rest of the song yet!) where you show the picking pattern but don't actually play all the notes. Listening to you play the full riff, I realized I was missing some notes and ended up having to watch at .25 speed to figure out what was going on xD it would be super helpful, from my perspective, if you could play every single note in the breakdown! Thanks again for posting this banger of a song. Such a beauty.
I take it back! I just messed myself up by not tracking which demonstration went to what part. You laid this out perfectly. Carry on! Thanks again! Much appreciated, many cheers.
I could be a member for a year and this one would still be a complicated brain/finger memory work out. I'll be on this one for a while. If I can get this one I might measure up to being part of a group that can play like this.Thanks.
@@BluesGuitarInstitute Yea, I know that is what your site and lessons are all about - got walk before you run right. I appreciate your interest in getting these tid bits out to us - thanks.

Hi, it sounds like you are dampening the 6th (bass) string. I think it sounds great and more "bass-y" and preclusive. Are you using the your right palm to do that? If so, do you have any links to references on proper technique to do that? Thanks :) and for the great tutorial!
I don't want to sound like a curmudgeon but is this made to be deliberately confusing? I'm playing this video over and over trying to decipher what you're playing. You very clearly show us the thumb patterns. When it comes time to show the finger pattern you become much less clear. Can't you just slowly demo the entire bar? Can't you give me a tab that shows both fingers and thumb? I'd really like to learn this song but your video seems like a tease. I'm very frustrated by it. I wish you'd demo it clearly. In the meantime, I give up...
yeah that 1 and 2 E and ah didn't make much sense I found a much clearer lesson on six string fingerpicking. Probably would've been better if he just told the order of what strings he's picking instead.
Look for a basic lesson on Travis picking. This is gonna be a little too much of a challenge if you’re not already pretty solid with the basic Travis picking pattern. If you have that down you won’t find this lesson as difficult to follow.
I like this lesson a lot but am a little slow on the uptake. Can anyone tell me the order of the strings being played in the C/g chord? Is it simply strings 6 3 4 2, or is it 6 4 followed by 6 3 4 2? Or something else altogether that I'm missing?
The picking changes quite a bit throughout so it depends on which time we go to C/G you're referring to. you may want to check the ultimate guitar tab I linked. I found it to be pretty accurate or let me know the time of the part for your question and I'll try to help out. Cheers! John
