- In this video, we're taking a look at the latest firmware update v01.03.10.30 for the DJI Osmo Action 3. Released on April 26th, 2023, this firmware update promises to bring some new features to this already impressive action camera.
The firmware update brings new Enhanced Video Mode to other settings than before with also bug fixes and some UI fixes.
We also look into how it compare to HDR 10 bit that have also been introduced in this firmware, and do some quick tests with different modes.

Hello,
I was out testing my new Osmo Action 3 yesterday. Everything working as intended until I decided to shoot some clouds using the Timelapse mode in 4k. I've used the Cloud preset - camera shut off due to overheating after barely 3 min. I set it up again, and it lasted the full 10 min. giving me a cool looking vid. I need to note here that the sun was mostly hidden behind clouds this second time around.
Searched for the overheating issue online and found a "crack" fix.
So I immediately formatted the SD card, uploaded the file to the root directory, put it back in the camera, put in a fresh 100% battery, and decided to test at home.
Video stopped recording due to overheating after 55 min, with battery left at around 15%.
Settings I used are as follows:
4k 60fps Rocksteady+ and Enhanced Image Quality set to on. Both displays were off during recording.
My SD card is also listed as recommended by DJI on their official website - SanDisk Extreme Pro V30 A2 UHS-I Speed Grade 3 (only difference is that it's 256GB, not the 32 one).
As you might have already guessed - I am in the EU and bought the camera here. I have the latest firmware update from Apr, 2023 (v01.03.10.30) because they did not offer me a choice to install an older one (bought it 2 weeks ago), and at the time of recording room temperature was 21 degrees Celsius.
So the fix doesn't seem to be working for me, and on forums DJI are suggesting lowering the resolution, fps, turning off the stabilization, turning off the enhanced image quality, etc. - something I am not willing to do because I want to shoot in 4k 60fps!
My old Osmo Action 1 shoots in that mode all the time - yes, it overheats but only the screen turns off, recording continues and I don't lose any footage.
People on the DJI forum mention that by updating the software to this latest one, caused this overheating to begin...
And it would not be that big of an issue, after all, I don't think I would ever need to record 50 whole min. of footage, but after overheating outside in the sun after only 3 min (it was cool before that as it was turned off for 10 min before attempting the Timelapse), I am worried if it will do that every single time in the sun...
Anyone has an idea on fixing this firmware related overheating issue?
Also, a big letdown is having the D-Cinelike Mode available at 10bit only, thus compression cannot be changed to H.264, and you are forced to record in HEVC (H.265) which is abnormally demanding on PC components for post-production...
Again - Osmo Action 1 has D-Cinelike in normal 4k 60fps for better color grading...
The only advice I have is not to film at 60 fps and with stabilization on.
Because with timelapse, you don't need 60 fps if you're only going to film clouds and timelapse, because you can increase the speed afterwards in post.
You don't need stabilization if the camera is stationary, since it has no function then anyway.
Also, don't let the sun shine directly on the camera.

Thank you for your reply and suggestions, Roger.
There is no option to select fps during Timelapse - only the resolution.
As far as keeping it in the shade, this was one of the major selling points of OA3 - you would never need to, because "it doesn't overheat". At least that's what every video on youtube said...
Anyway, I will continue testing next month and hopefully will be able to get my B-rolls in the sun as intended.
@@aidanismailov5814 Yes there is no option for fps since it doesn't matter for timelapse in most cases.
DJI also wrote that it will have close focus from 30 cm but it is impossible to have close focus and also infinity in focus.
thanks!
because of you, I noticed the update!❤
Great, because they haven't sent out any notes about it.
thanks for the review as i am getting one soon for my channel take care and have a wonderful day
You will get a good camera that you can always trust will be recording and with great batterylife.
Dji wrote me back after emailing them . Supposedly enhanced image qaulity increases bit rate and dynamic range . I pretty much use it all the time lol.
Nice to know. I just had to check and one of theese clips had 93 Mbit/s vs 90 Mbit/s so no big difference in bitrate.
D-CineLike can have up to 130 Mbit/s
@Roger Johansen Photography i would use that but my laptop dosnt like hevc files lol guess its time to upgrade .
@@jaysun070476 True, h265 require a faster computer for playback.
Im seriously leaning into DJI osmo 3 as my first vlogging camera but so far i find the images quite soft. I wonder if this will produce decent image quality during indoors for food vlogging?
Indoors and in low light, all action cameras do have some noise reduction automatic done making the footage softer.
You can use it indoors if you have good light.
But for vlogging indoors I can recommend getting a cheap mirrorless camera, all mirrorless cameras will do it better than any action camera + will look more pro.
My 2023/02 version has no focus issues at all. Hope that helps someone somewhere...
That is great, seems like they finally fixed it.
@@rjfotovideo Did they fix it, or did they "fix" it by applying additional sharpening to the output image/video? I recall reading on a few forums that the images were now appearing over sharpened to give the effect that the subject was in focus
@@occipitalexposure5059 It is physical impossible to fix focus in a firmware. They did add even more sharpening in one of the firmware, but their newer batches cameras since November mostly have fixed focus internally. There are some units still with no good focus, also I seen one reported his had too close focus so rest of background were unsharp.
Cannot connect mine to lightcut app my new buy Ao3,,Cannot open the cam, pls how🙏
There are many things that could be the problem, but you need to activate bluetooth and use DJI Mimo app for transfer to phone before editing.
Seems like a good update Roger! Has it fixed the focus issue?
The firmware a few month ago did only add more sharpening in software. But all new batches from this year have good focus.
@@rjfotovideo ok 👍🏼 cheers
Hi, Great comparison video of the various modes. I'm considering purchasing the action 3, but I am weary of the out of focus issues a lot of people are talking about. Some people have said the new 2023 batches of the action 3 are better and less prone to the out of focus issue, do you know if that is true? Also, I'm planning on shooting 4k 30p until the battery runs out with the action 3. Fishing videos, set it and forget it. My GoPro 7 overheats shooting 4k 30p after about 30 minutes when its sunny, and it will only record on a cool day for 50-60 minutes before the battery dies. wondering what real world battery life I should expect from the action 3 in 4k 30p if I let it run until the battery dies? Any feedback is much appreciated. Thank you!
Thank you!
My unit is from 11/2022 and what I have seen is that all units from November have good focus. But I have actually seen one person with unit from 2023 that have too close focus again.
About overheating, Osmo Action 3 is one of the best on the market regarding overheat issues and cold temperature. With 4K @ 30 fps I think you will get close to 2 hours recording time before battery is flat. DJI claim 160 minutes recording time.
I will use mine for fishing, but not sure if I will let it run the whole time, makes so many clips to go through after.
Thank you so much for your reply it's very helpful. Keep up the reviews. Take care!
How do you find if there is focus issue or not? I mean, it is not dslr or camera with macro lens. So if very close, focus will lose for sure.
Still, would like to know what kind of focus issue people were talking about.
BTW, I ordered one for me ❤
batch 2023 have out of focus again?
@@IrwanAmiruddin-vm5ys Not really, but if you check out this thread then you can see what one person had of issue: forum.dji.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=289463&extra=page%3D1%26filter%3Dtypeid%26typeid%3D781%26typeid%3D781
Hi, i am planing to buy next month, does it have focus issue?
No it doesn't, but if you want a few weeks to see if Osmo Action 4 will be out
is there also a difference in low light?
I haven't tested it in low light after this update, but it didn't say it should be any changes.
Will have to do a test on that.
It has a pretty good image quality 😇
It really do, thank you 🙂
File name is, date and time+nr so ? not to long.
Should be possible to set custom filenames to make it easier for sorting in post
@@rjfotovideo ?
@@hurtighansen1shorts Sometimes clips will not show up in order while I import them into davinci resolve. Had the same problems with gopro clips.
@@rjfotovideo Well. That's not the cam, but DVR there sucks. Never have that issue. OA3 have timestamp and your costum mark on files from 1-100- If you do not, reset/formatting card, you can end up with a mess.
Hi, how do I get the update? mine is on V01.02.1010
You have to connect it with DJI Mimo app on your phone and then you will get a notice about updating.
@@rjfotovideo Thanks for the reply - I did that but get nothing, even when I try the update thing. - bummer
@@AmaNotaGogo Is your OA3 connected to your phone? It should come up automatic then.
You could ask on DJI forum where you will get help with that from DJI folks.
Why does everything look so washed out on its screen?
When I was in my living room? I put a brown tape infront on lens to make it darker and easier to show menu since sun was shining
