  • I have always wondered where the Largest Model Train Store in the world was, now I know. Caboose Hobbies has the world record with 18,600 sq ft of floor space filled with railroading supplies. They have all major scales from Z to G and some car and plane models too.
    I take you on a tour of this establishment located in Denver CO.

    I already miss the store, I stopped in every time I went to Denver to visit my mom. An N Scale friend of mine several years ago asked me if the store was worth visiting. I told him yes and that his first visit would last at least two hours. He told me no way, he would never spend that long in a hobby shop. He got home and told me he spent four hours there. The name was sold to someone else and the floor space is a fraction of the original Caboose Hobbies.

    Thank you for this trip down Memory Lane! I shopped at the old location many times and still miss it. I've been to the new one a couple times and it just does not have the same vibe! Still a nice store, but that South Broadway location was one of my favorite places ever.

    I love a hands on store but it would be 70 miles for me to the nearest hobby shop. That's awesome. Mr. B.

    I visited them back in 1990 & it seemed they were exclusively trains. I recall seeing a TT scale brass F-unit - something you don't see every day!

    Thanks for posting Bob. When I lived in Denver I went there all the time. Great store. They used to have a wonderful, very detailed HO layout as you walked into the store, but they sold it a couple of years back.

      Peter CPRail8748 Thanks for the sub Peter. There is another hobby store in St. Paul MN that is pretty big but they have a mixture of planes, trains and automobile models. www.scalemodelsupplies.com Usually sell everything at MSRP prices.

    Sad to say, but they went out of business. The new owners who purchased the store after the old store on S. Broadway was closed, have closed the new store in Lakewood. I think the only 100% trains store in the Denver area is now N Scaly Supply.

      Widi1956 I did buy two Micro-Trains cars. Bourbon Boxcar Nose Art series 50' flatcar with a container and I also got 50' BN covered gondola that is graffitied. Slightly higher than online but cheaper without the shipping charges included.

    This video (and the one by James Wright) is Excellent! I wanted to film there - but stalled too long and didn't want to make one with half empty shelves after the retirement announcement. Thank You for doing this last year - when everything still looked great!

      Well it is closed now I guess. At least they are still filling preorders from what I hear. Also, saw recently that they have some news coming out soon. Who knows, maybe they are not dead yet. Thanks for watching.

      I'm guessing (from that notice on their website) they will become an online only sales source. Their employees probably convinced them to keep that going once they closed the physical store. Take care.

      They had better fix their website to have bigger pictures of all the products, I drive by shop. If I see something that I like, I stop and look at it and maybe buy it. It is really hard to find anything if you don't know what you want till you see it. They have to put a picture of everything they sell, and they don't.

    We were there a few years back. We found the staff was rather rude. Asked the man in the HO section about buying some "N" scale engines as there was no person in the "N" scale area and all he did was point and grunt and then said that it is lunch time the person running that area will be back after lunch. As we were checking out the cashier lady just walked away from the register to help another/regular customer that just walked into the door and asked her a question about a layaway purchase he had. Stood there for about 5 minutes wait for someone to return to the register to complete our checkout. Then just gave up and walked out left what the engines we were going to buy at the register. Wife and I felt foolish just standing at the register and figured the purchase would never happen and left.

      Seems to me they might be running it like a big box store rather then mom and pop. Sadly I have been to a few myself where the staff rude and unhelpful. Days of customer service I guess.

    • @DaBobsNScaleMancave
      @DaBobsNScaleMancave  9 лет назад +1

      ***** I kind of got that impression myself with some of the old guys there, maybe they are just not happy playing with trains all day, I am. Maybe not after 60 years nonstop playing, I got to eat sometime. I had a similar experience when we checked out as well with other regulars being there. It worked out in the end. The lady at the register I met was the actual owner of Caboose Hobbies, she didn't want to be on camera. Could be in witness protection or just shy.

      You know, every time i hear caboose hobbies mentioned, there is always someone saying that the staff there are very rude and only "roll out the red carpet" for the regulars. I've come across a few hobby stores like that in my time, its hard to find those small friendly stores that treat everyone as equals....

    • @davidholubetz1014
      @davidholubetz1014 6 лет назад

      Sorry to say that my experience with Caboose was also that they were arrogant and dismissive. Did not seem to care about their job or their customer. I bought almost 800 bucks worth of G scale track and still couldn't get much more than a few words out of the guys behind the counters.

    Caboose Hobbies is closing on Sept 25th 2016 when the owners retire. They were recently trying to find a new location as the owner of the building was looking to redevelop the property.

    It devastates me that this place is shutting down in September D: What will become the world's largest model train store when we have to say goodbye to CH?

    • @DaBobsNScaleMancave
      @DaBobsNScaleMancave  8 лет назад

      It will go out of business the end of Sep and the buildings owner is selling it to a developer. Probably to tear it down and build condo's or some other high value buildings.
