The UGLY Diatom Bloom Issue

In the RSR 625xl G2 tank, we are unfortunately experiencing the UGLY Diatom Bloom Issue we all come across at some point in the hobby. In this video, I will show what I've done so far and what I'm about to start using to hopefully combat the silicates coming out the sand. We even send off a sample of the sand to Matthew, who is one of my subscribers, to put it under the microscope to double check it's Diatoms.

hi love your videos , i have the same issue just got rid of dinoflagellettes, been dosing phosphate, it worked great, ( phosphates bottomed out ) just got two conches, and some nassarius snails,sandbeds clearing up, i might buy some of the sera stuff, like your diy spillover, like to do that myself as well,, would you be ablle to tell me how to make one thanks .

Hey Shaun, thank you 😊 Oh nice one, my Diatoms are still with me. ICP test came back with high silicates, which I knew anyway. Hoping that Sera will sort it out. Unfortunately, I can't have any clean-up crew 😞
The spillway is some black acrylic that's heated up and bent over at one end. I cut mine nice and tight on the width so it can slide in and out for cleaning. (I may remove the glass and silicone it to it as some water gets under). I then have some egg crate on top of the 4 filter floss cups with the floss sat on top.
Just make sure you measure the top so the bend in the plastic still allows the egg crate and floss to slide underneath but not too high as you don't want the water to spill over into the chamber behind which is the return pump section in my sump.
