Making the Anastasia evening gown has been a dream of mine since I was a child. I finally decided to tackle it for the our hospital's Doctors ball. In this video, I go into a deep dive into studying the movie version of the dress, as well as why I chose to replicate the way that I did. I use a vintage pattern from the 1950s (a reprint) to make this, as well as silk satin, and some glitter tulle. I explain flat lining, hand pricked zippers, boning and boning channels as well as the nuances of fitting a muslin. Thank you for watching!

I think as little girls we all wanted someone to look at us like Dimitri looks at Anastasia in that scene. I loved this movie so much as a kid, and tbh it still holds up today as an amazing movie. You look stunning in that dress ❤️

Yes, the dresses in Anastasia are iconic!
Her dream sequence ball gown, her coronation gown, her cute dress on the boat (which may now be considered some type of cottage core), her 1920's flapper outfits in Paris, etc etc. The list goes on and on. All truly so integral to selling the whimsical and magical feeling of the story.
tell you that - the amount of love i have for this particular dress is kind of embarrassing, and now that you made one, i'm wondering why i shouldn't make on, too...

I always imagine this dress being made in silk velvet which I think would be super 90s and it definitely solidified my decision to go to fashion school so I can learn to make things I love

I honestly think my favourite thing about this whole video and project is the look on your face while you were futzing about with the gloves and things. That level of glee and joy is what this hobby is all about.

That train fabric is so beautiful and it makes me think of my favorite animated movie dress which is the sparkly dress from The Little Mermaid. The end result of this dress is stunning!

@@hailtothefire_ It's definitely blue. Almost a periwinkle. If I had enough money and time to make it I would add little rhinestones to make the sparkle effect seen in the movie--they look magical in the right lighting.
I feel your pain re: velvet!! I tried to make a Christmas dress in a faux velvet and it was the most anger inducing sew of my life. Then I hated it on me! Thankfully my wife liked it and it looks great on her so it didn't go to waste! 😊

I am *SO* thrilled to watch this video!! My high school self feels the same way about this movie! My first OC- RPG character was named Annya because I loved Anastasia so much. The music is so iconic and you are so right about the chemistry and rom-com nature of the film.
This gown was so influential on how I wanted to look for the first prom I ever attended (I went to 3 proms, the first as a sophomore) and I begged my mom to see a version for me. The version my Mom sewed for me was a strapless deep midnight blue satin a-line ball gown style, with a shimmery scarf accessories (I wore long gloves for a little while but they didn’t last long at prom), so wasn’t super true to the movie, but all I remember is how special and beautiful and perfect I felt, and that I was my own version of Anya. I lost my mother in February of 2016, and I am so grateful to have these memories of her and the dream dress she sewed for me. 💜

I plan on making this dress again since I have made it when I was starting out in cosplay and I made the front of the skirt too short and made of spandex which was a good option back then but I wish I made it out of velvet after watching the animated movie again. I might use my corset bodice pattern that cups my chest but I could extend it to the floor and even it out so it just kisses the floor but with a deep hem in case I wore shorter heels or taller shoes. You have really made my day today since I always look forward to your projects since they are so detailed and I'm always amazed at the final result which makes me smile.

This is my childhood favorite movie too, for many of the same reasons; a heroine that speaks up for herself, a well written romance, fun side characters and a darn good adventurous story that got me enchanted! Your dress is marvelous and looks like it could be as much a classy timeless evening gown as a cosplay!

I cannot thank you enough for bringing us along on this adventure! Growing up I also didn't have a "favorite Disney princess" because Anastasia was (and is) my number one. My sister and I used to rewind our VHS to the slap scene at the end of the movie soooo many times because the dynamic between Anya/Anastasia and Dimitri was PERFECT. I'm still holding out in hopes that you make her coronation/Russian ball gown but again, THANK YOU for this masterpiece.

This movie was always my favourite, because Anastasia is the prettiest of princesses. Also she was not this little naive girl, that took the first prince that she saw 😄 Dimitry and she have adventures together and really fall in love, wich is missing in the movies before this one.

I saw Anastasia in theaters with two of my aunts when I was 12 and I fell in love with it. I watch it on Disney+ all the time now. I loved this vedio!!

SO clever with sewing the two layers together around the dart and then the dart itself! I never ever would have thought of this. Usually I just mix lining technique with flatlining, do my darts on the inside, then attach it all together but this is so much nicer. Thank you for sharing! Beautiful dress!
