- Yeah yeah yeah, delayed, I know. Father's Day is in June, not September... but other things got in the way.
ANYWAY.
Today, we're riding the 1979 Kawasaki KZ 650 SR. Fun was had by most.
Side note: I used Waves Clarity Vx on this video, set to 75%. Anything above that and my voice got warbly and distorted. Also, it was really quite windy on this ride, so Clarity had its work cut out for it!

*Beautiful motorcycle frd..... Amazing bike riding frd..... Big lk frd 👍
Thanks!
I was gifted a '79 KZ650SR by my step-brother and long time friend, it was his baby for 5 years but he got a newer bike & I randomly told him I want to start riding. Just had to help replace the chain and the mission cover gasket and she was mine - beautiful motorcycle and a blast to ride
That's awesome! They truly are great bikes.
Someone installed a standard KZ650 tank on it though. Great bikes.
Oh, I know :( I tried to find a good SR tank, and even bought one, but found it too expensive to fix the dent in it - and finding one without a ton of dents or rust is prohibitively expensive. Thanks for watching & commenting!
Sweet looking way back machine! Love that sound! Busa friend seemed cool lol
Thanks man! Yeah, he was super chill - I'll have to keep my eye out for him next time I'm up that way :D
It's leaking gas ***continues smoking cigar*** 🔥 😂
It's a cool bike and you should ride it more. 😎
Hey, it wasn't a bad leak, and with the cameras rolling, it'd make for a heck of a story, right?
Thanks man... I SHOULD ride it more - maybe next year I can find someone to actually, you know, get it in good mechanical shape!
No tech... I wish they made a trike like that.. but then I'd probably die lol. It's weird, no one in my family rode yet here I am :)
YOU"RE THE GUY!!! The one guy who doesn't have family who rides! Did your friends get you into it?
Also, +1 for tech, I don't want you to die.
Very nice 👍
Thank you 👍
Always leaking, are you sure it's not a harley?
It's been hanging out with a rough crowd of Harleys lately... bad influences!
Oooh, I love the black and yellow version of the logo. 👍🏻
Thanks! I just told the graphic designer that made the other logo that I wanted a classic bike outline like the main logo, and this is what she came up with!
I had a bike a few years ago, a 1980 Suzuki GSX twin, that’s very reminiscent of your Kawasaki. Probably made me feel the same as yours does you.
Btw changing the topic… I was interested to hear your comment about the historic registered busa. Over here you can register a vehicle as historic if it goes over 40 years old. The only benefit I think is that we don’t pay any yearly road tax that we’d have to pay otherwise. What interested me the most was that you mentioned restrictions in MD about when and where you can use historic vehicles. I think that’s insane. One of my vehicles is over 50 years old and I can drive it daily.
Yeah, 20 years in Maryland - if it were 40, there probably wouldn't be such rampant abuse of it, but at 20 years old, there's a ton of cheap Honda Civics tagged as Historic in my state... and they're rattle traps, not restored cars. So many people skip out on the taxes and registration fees and such, just to save a few bucks - and avoid the inspection that goes along with it - that you end up with crap-boxes on the roads, bald tires and in dire need of repair.
So, the state instituted the limits on when/where you can drive them to try and curb the Historic commuter cars, but they seemingly don't enforce it. It's a genuine danger on the roads - you should see some of the crap that people still willingly drive. Historic vehicles in this state are not meant to be daily drivers.
FWIW, my KZ runs and drives as well as any bike should, and I made sure all the safety stuff was 100% operational before I took it out on the road. And I still only ride it occasionally.
That makes a lot of sense. 20 years is a different class of ‘historic’ and I can see why it’s open to abuse. Although we can drive 40 year old vehicles without paying tax and without the yearly inspection (called MOT here) there is still a legal requirement for the vehicle to be road worthy. Of course they not all are…
@@TheOriginalCoda On a side note: you should see this place when a few snowflakes stick to the ground... all those jalopies with bald tires get abandoned in the middle of the road - or worse, stuck in a ditch. It's total pandemonium!
Is Need Wood park near a lovers' getaway?
Nice old bike by the way!
No, but there's a Morningwood Drive about 15 minutes away from there.
Thanks!
@@RoadReality Only the most skilled motorists dare traveling that road...
...because it's hard🥁😄
Makes me miss my old 1978 KZ 650, it was blue with chrome fenders. Now I ride a 97 Vulcan 800 Classic and a Connie 14, that old 650 never let me down had a 4 in 1 Kerker header with 4 HV K&N filters.
Sorry to make you miss it - but you've got some great bikes in your current stable!
@@RoadReality I agree with what you said about your 800 performance wise, it is similar to your KZ650 they can both run the qtr mile in the 13's. The thing I had trouble adjusting to coming from the 650 to the 800 was ground clearance I kept dragging the 800"s pegs, but I got used to not leaning as much on it. 😃
@@evilwestsidefan9249 Without reading the original reviews, I would've SWORN the 800 was slower in the quarter mile, but yeah, they're similar ... but I don't ride hard enough to scrape hard parts on either.
That said, I've been leaned over far enough on my KZ that I had to work to lean it back up [at least, that's how it felt], but never had that feeling on my Vulcan - it just doesn't beg to be leaned over that far!
@@RoadReality Best thing I did to my KZ650 was put Pirelli tires on her, man she could handle in the turns, had a great time on that bike.
@@evilwestsidefan9249 Great, now I just need to replace the battery, stator, several other parts... and maybe she'll run long enough to TRY cornering :D
You can't just say Zed, and not quote "Pulp fiction".
next time, next time... Honestly, I forgot that Zed was a character in that movie!
@@RoadReality not a major character, but cause for a major quote :D
@@theodorstravels Yes indeed - I'll have to brush up on my Pulp Fiction quotes before heading out again on the Zed.
I love that bike!!! You need to ride it more!!
It really needs fixin' - like a real mechanic to work on it. I'm just limping along with my knuckle-dragging mekanik skillz until finances open up a bit - or I sell it. :(
