I love how to-the-point he is. No needless babbling. So nice after a whole day filled with rambling teachers whose lectures you have to disect in order to find anything important.
I just can't believe how witty and funny this guy is. Brilliant teacher. Everything useful and straight to the point. Invaluable stuff those lectures. Thank you very much!
I believe it's a Hook in the sense of a "character hook" i.e. hooking you into the situation of the character. It's getting your attention (hooking you like a fish) and drawing you in. Seeing him as a virtual slave makes us sympathize with him and want his life to change. We know he will have magic come into his life and now we really want him to have it for his sake.
he already said it in the description....he knows the music is obnoxious, but it adds to the whole class, after all, he says it himself...being a writer makes you cheesy sometimes :-)
How is that Harry's sad boring life is the "hook"? I understand that to get into the meat of a story, we have to suspend the real world and know something is going to happen - something HAS to happen; but how is "Harry's sad and boring life" THE hook?
The cheesy sound effect/music gets really annoying after the first 15 seconds or so. By the time I've heard it for the 4th time, especially while trying to listen to Dan, I'm really not sure I can stand to hear it another 6 times. Please don't do this in the future.
Put a twist on it and swear it came in a dream, uh...do you guys dream? I did when I was a kid .still do sometimes but I wake myself up when it's a nightmare. LAST PIECE OF ADVICE FROM THE OLD GUY : CAHNGE YOUR PEN NAME TO GABE TOUCHER

This stuff is like gold dust. A lot of great tips! And I've loved Writing Excuses for so long - I knew his voice sounded familiar.

Thank you for posting these. You're a good teacher and this info is gold. For beginners like me, this is amazing.
I've heard lots of convention sound and yours is superlative. I can hear the speaker without any hiss or buzz. Thank you.
Who is watching this with me in 2024?

Writers are such effective speakers
It's an empathy hook. It gets into your heart and you feel for the character.
God the music goes on for so long
genius! i just outlined my novel in 10 minutes flat.
When he explains he makes me feel like the intelligent one 😂

These are awesome! Thanks for posting these! (And the intro/outro music isn't even that obnoxious? Not sure why everyone's up in arms about it lmao)
Drop the invasive music.
I don't think they listened to you
I wonder if the slides or lecture notes for this talk are anywhere for the lazy plebs :P
Maybe a bit late, but there you go:
www.monkeysloth.net/fearful/StoryStructure.ppt
wow thanks!
The link doesn't seem to work. Do you have another link that will lead to this info, in case it has changed location?
Write them down jeez. You wanna write stories and be lazy? :P
@@fergal2424 Yes, please! 😂
The fact that the intro music is playing while he is talking is very distracting
Damnit John Brown! 12 years later and you still distracted me.
Hi, is the plot turn 1 a single event or series of chapters / can take place over time?
thanks for the videos, the music between videos is a little loud but it's ok
Why did you keep the music playing over his narration? It's terrible.
Dang it, John Brown.

Ik its old but its because it makes us sympatize with him
i'm waiting for this guy to say "BULBOUS BOUFFANT"
Thanks for the heads up. I've sent Dan an email.
Trying to balance his structure with another famous guys. The other guys has like 10 steps
To folks complaining about the music: 1) it's limited & brief; 2) you can still hear him over the music; and 3) it could have been much, much worse.
Love this series, but omg... the music is too much.
ich kenne Dan Persönlich wir sin freunde
Brandon Süß der ist doch kein deutscher oda
Is there a copy of this without the shit music and the automated voice telling me the same information he just told me 10 minutes ago in part 1?
DAN STOLE IT FROM STAR TREK RPG. STAR WARS GOT IT FROM WHAT'S HIS NAME AND LARRY BROOKS AND THEY GOT IT FROM HISTORY..........THE BIBLE.

Dude, the stupid music has got to go.
Oh god that awful music.
God, he knows Harry Potter so terribly. Why not to choose another book then?
