I always mow my tall fescue/bluegrass lawn 2 or 3 days after I overseed, at this time the seed has not yet sprouted but has worked it's way to the soil so mowing will not bother the seed but will keep the existing grass shorter to give the seedlings a better chance and so I can wait longer to mow once the seed actually germinates
Planted seed 5 days ago, finally seeing fescue germination on fescue/KBG mix. Did a 4-day pregermination. Need that KBG to make it. Weather has been perfect.
It's amazing how fast that rye seed germinates with the perfect weather right now! Are you going to be throwing some seed down up by the house real soon. Paul and the gang are doing an amazing job with the house, that Veresetta stone looks really nice, good choice by Kelsey! Take care and don't work too hard!
Nice update Ryan. I'm up in Ontario Canada. My yard is coming in nicely. First cut is done and I've also overseeded. However, I used a hand garden aerator on the whole yard as the soil was really compacting. I felt the overseed was just laying on top. After 2 weeks of no germination the aeration trick worked like a charm. Thanks for all your tips. I have an experiment of my own I am doing with the yard. So we'll see how that goes.
I been tagging you on my twitter posts how your Grand Slam Rye is doing. Very impressive! I already did a mow on the 11th day after seeding. Thanks for the overseeding tip, I wanna fill in some thin areas now.
Great stuff. I just did a full burn down and reseed my 30,000 sqft of yard. It is coming in very uneven. You can tell where the shade hits the longest. So some spots got a mow 12 days in. I just did a mow of about 3/4 my back yard, (day 22). And the other 1/4 is still coming along, slowly, I had to reseed again on day 14 after some rain washed away. I’m just trying to stay off the smallest stuff, and only hit the spots that need it. Once it’s matured enough I’ll pull out my zero turn, but for right now I’m using my old (but sharpened) push mower
I seeded a 5,000 Sq ft yard on August 17th. I used a 365ss KBG seed. As of today, I have lots of weeds from the excess watering, the grass has grown to several inches in some patches, barely an inch in other spots and almost nothing in others. It's really weird. Should I mow the tall stuff when there's still so much that's tiny. Also, when should I slow down on the heavy watering? There is zero shade in the yard.
I did a KBG reno this year. Smoked my fescue/blue mix for pure blue in the front since I already have fescue in the back. Man, it really does test your patience. I’m on day 24 and maybe 3/4 inch tall. Intended HOC is like 3.25” maybe 2.75”. I was thinking to rent a manual reel mower to get a mow job on it to encourage more growth. Thoughts? Super tempted to throw RK elite rye on top but I want to see a pure KBG for at least a season first.
Hey Ryan 🚜. Instead of those blankets. Any thoughts on doing 2-4mil clear plastic over your new seeding plots. Did it for my front yard and it kept the seed in place and moister in the ground. Took the plastic off about 2 weeks later.
Hi Ryan, great job like always! What about poa supina mix test plot on the wet shaded area, where fine fescue is. This week I’m seeding some 5% supina mix on my shaded area under two oaks whit dense shade, only fine fescue is surviving there, but it’s not traffic tolerant. I have to reseed every year…
Hey Ryan, I just seeded with you Elite PRG 7 days ago and things are looking plush. My question is after I do my first cut and then reseed the few bare/thin spots do I need to stick with the watering multiple times per day to keep the seed from drying until germination is done?
Hey Ryan I used your Elite bluegrass seed. Awesome stuff most of it sprouted in 7 days. Im currently at day 14. How lo g should I wait to do my first mow on bluegrass?
Hey Ryan, in Waukee IA and the yard gets beat down by heat. Thinking of taking it from Bluegrass to Fescue. This a good idea? The courser grass is fine with our family btw
I got to thinking about that clover you planted how well does it grow in shade ? I have a 2 foot wide area along a fence weeds won't even grow any ideas other than continuing the river rock along that spot
Hello Ryan. I overseeded my yard on August 27th with a mix of chewings fescue, bluegrass, and perennial ryegrass. I have been watering frequently and lightly every day to keep the seed moist. Some of the bare spots in my yard have little or zero germination. We had some heavy rain after the overseed so I'm wondering if there was some washout. At what point do I scratch up the bare spots and start over? Should I give it more time, or is it time to start over on those bare spots? At what point do I change the watering schedule of the new grass? Thanks
I have recently over seeded a section of my grass with a rye/KBG mix where a large pool used to be. My soil Is very sandy with low OM according to my soil test this spring. There were a lot of pebbles in this spot as well which I raked and dethatched. I then put some fresh top soil down, over seeded, sprayed with Tenacity and also put a very light layer of peat moss down. However, the tenacity is really only tackling some of the crabgrass and there is a lot of what I assume is spotted spurge spreading across it. I have a lot of baby grass slowly coming up but the spurge is starting to spread everywhere. Any advice? I’ve been hand pulling them but they keep spreading everywhere. Also, the soil I put down was the basic top soil you can get at Lowes so I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it.
I always put 3 in the end so I remove those first and then just start pulling and you'll pretty quickly find them where the blanket doesn't want to move.
Not sarcasm. It comes in in about 4 weeks, by that time it has slowed down enough and I don't have the benefit of a light push mower, so, I wait. Never more than. 6 inches tall.
I'm at about 9 days on my Perennial Rye from Elite. GUYS, this seed germinated in under 4 days. Just had to order a 3rd bag, and customer service is top notch. At 9 days I'm a bit nervous to cut. I'm sitting mostly at 3.5 and some areas its sitting around 2. It just seams so frail to be walking on. Any other of yall have experience with this and does it bounce back with no issues? Thanks for all the insight

Very typical with a sun/shade situation

So many good areas for testing
Would suggest adding Scott’s winter guard fertilizer to a freshly overseeded lawn?
Wonder if watering the straw blanket before taking it off the grass would make pulling it easier?
Noob tip on the stakes but if you run some cheap string under the stakes it is easier to find them later.

Would Connor Ward approve of these recommendations 🤔🤔

OBVIOUSLY NOT

It's likely going to take a while to get to mowing height. Mow when it reaches 1 inch above where you want your height of cut to be going forward.

Anyone on here know someone that knows someone that has a BA from U of M Crookston, for Turf Management?
Always be plotting
So after your first over seed and then your first mow where you still have bare spots you still put seed down?

Can anyone tell me what brand the white dethatcher he uses in the videos is? I would love to get one
How long after over seed should you wait to mow again so I don’t bag up all the grass seed?
Is it too late to over seed in Columbus OHIo (Kentucky blue grass is my grass type) . Planning to do scrapping and reseeding and cover with peatmoss
How much starter fertilizer did you apply?
I have recently over seeded a section of my grass with a rye/KBG mix where a large pool used to be. My soil Is very sandy with low OM according to my soil test this spring. Now that your seed is sprouting I think it’s too late to spray anything. Keep hand pulling if you can keep up
Yeah same thing I was going to say is that you'll have to wait to spray anything until at least 3-4 mows of the new grass.
1:00 Ryan left the rollers on. Couldn't that damage the new grass?
3:01 - ‘Gotta Find my Stakes Here’ . . .
* would it Help to Spray the Stake Spots with Orange Spray Paint?
I always put 3 in the end so I remove those first and then just start pulling and you'll pretty quickly find them where the blanket doesn't want to move.
Any updates on 48 Kubota?????
I’m on day 16 with the elite tall fescue. Is it bad that I went through and over seeded everything again? There were a lot of bare spots.
I typically start overseeding thin or bare spots pretty early on if it's a bunch type grass like fescue or rye
I just mow it in the spring for the first time
Ryegrass would be over 2 feet tall
I hope this is sarcasm

@@adamlwvdc36 is it Rye, Blue, or TTTF?
Just wondering if you did a soil sample for each plot and did you have to adjust for ph level? Thanks.
These plots were sampled as a whole and I have mid 6 for pH so no adjustments needed.

Usually ships 1-2 days and then it's ground shipping from California so probably a week total
