  • A simple breakdown of the difference between F-spaced and G-spaced guitars/pick ups. Knowing the difference between F-spacing and G-spacing can be hard. The crazy, opinionated world of the internet and guitar forums doesn't make it any easier. Also, particular spacing isn't uniform from guitar to guitar, it all varies. Come watch the whole video and see whats important about spacing and how to find the right match up. This is a SOLVED series video!

So tired of hearing people saying you HAVE to use F spaced on floyd equipped guitars. There has been no proof there is a sonic difference. Maybe if you are looking at the signal with an oscilloscope you might see a slight difference, but not with ears. Good vid!

sure, run it thru an oscilloscope to waste some time in your life.
No one tells you that with individual pole pieces that you cant bend a string, because doing that would mean the string is bent into the total silence between pole pieces, right?

I just installed a TB-4 in a new pickguard ordered from AE for an HSS Squier Classic Vibe Strat. I had to sand the opening for the humbucker since the hole was cut for a G-Spaced pickup. You can order a pickguard with the right hole size (F-Spaced) from Warmoth but it will be a bit pricier.

i think it's 99% aesthetic thing. and that 1% is only with someone who'd look at the bridge as close as less than 10 inches, mostly like you and you only. So, if it bothers your eyes, then go with matching spacing. if not, nobody would notice or care.

Lol, I just noticed on my Pacifica the strings don't run through the middle of the poles on the bridge humbucker, the poles are wider apart than the strings. It sounds good and obviously Yamaha don't think it matters.

But does it really not effect the quality of the sound? I'm concerned about this because I just custom ordered an F spaced DiMarzio D Activator for the bridge of my les paul but didn't understand enough about them before doing so. I have a Gibson 490R in the neck and I don't think you would find a professional guitarist or company designing a line up like that and there's maybe a reason for that? I don't know. i'm thinking of re-ordering and will now have a brand new hotter than normal D Activator without a use for it.

@@nikaxeguitarYeah dude! My uncle owned a guitar shop through the 70's, 80's & 90's. His guitar repair guy gave me that info almost 30 years ago. 99.99% of the time you use an F-spaced pickup on a floating bridge, so I believed it to be true! But I have used many F-spaced pickups in the neck position of guitars with 43mm nuts or greater too, for years. A lot of Ibanez guitars, especially the ones with Dimarzio pickups use 2 F-spaced humbuckers on their floating trem guitars. My RGT 42 and my RG420HPFM both had dual F-spaced stock. I've done a couple comparisons over the years, there is NO difference in sound, the tolerance of the pickup loads will be a bigger change than the spacing itself. Just install what you got or can get for the least amount of money. \,,/

About the neck pickup and spacings; they do matter, but not quite as much as a bridge pickup. Dimarzio for example as one company that specifically uses the term f spaced on their pickups, the neck pickup Liquifire I use in my neck is f spaced, however, this can be off a bit due to the size of the nut(width of the nut) in comparison with the width of the bridge. The bridge pickup being so close to the bridge, that spacing won't be very far off from the bridge spacing whereas if the nut and bridge widths have a much larger difference in width then the neck pickup would require a different spacing than the bridge.
Now. Here's my opinion on the spacing thing in general. The wrong spacing won't affect the "tone" that the pickup gives. It will however affect the volume of each individual string. So the wrong spacing will definitely make some strings sound more dull and quieter than the other strings due to them not being in the center of the poles field. If this is a big deal is determined by how sensitive your hearing is to your tone and how finicky you are in that area of you're skill. If you are the kind of person like myself, that can hear the difference when one string goes dead while the others are still "alive" then yes. It will definitely be noticeable. Especially if you once more like myself use a specific tone that's dialed almost identical every time you pick up your axe. However if you can't tell when you're strings are dead just from the tone of them, then I really doubt you would ever hear any difference.
The point. It's all subjective to our own mindsets and opinions.
Great videos by the way. Been watching a few of yours recently. Always straight to the point, and pretty knowledgeable. Keep rocking brother!

I have an idea of using an f spaced bobbin and a g spaced bobbin on a pickup with the f spaced obviously pointing closer to the bridge. Especially when it comes to some of the Duncan hybrids like a jb/custom this would cover a lot of the sonic territory
