The frets on this BC Rich Warlock were so bad the guitar was unplayable.
Watch as they are removed and replaced, saving this instrument from the scrap heap.

Another awesome video Colin! Here's a suggestion from me, before you start on your Warlock project:
Obtain a set of Seymour Duncan Black Winter pickups, and some Billy Gibbons 7 gauge strings, install both on this guitar, and do a quick video on this setup!
I challenge you to play some Black Metal, and some Black/Death Metal; I do not see this genre getting much respect or exposure on many Metal guitarist youtube channels, which saddens me greatly. It would be awesome to hear how this setup sounds with that kind of Metal! Keep up the good work! Cheers! \m/
      SHOUTOUT:
      Massemord (Italy/Sweden/Norway) Black Metal
      Gravewürm (USA) Black/Death Metal
      Tash (USA) Black/Death Metal
The Spawn of Satan (USA) Death Metal
Colin's Rad new haircut! Long hair is no requirement for Metal credentials! \m/

Guitar work is daunting sometimes because it's so easy to mess up a precision musical instrument, but it's also easy to fix and once you start digging into them, you realize that you are just some tools and RUclips tutorials away from learning a very cool skill. Even something like doing a full setup on guitar can feel very rewarding, knowing you can turn almost any guitar into something playable unlocks a lot of potential out of every stringed instrument you come across.
This is why I love cheap gear, because I can get something that looks and feels decent, then turn it into something special with a few choice upgrades and many hours of work to make even budget guitars into workhorses that sound incredible.

The bridge is quite difficult to wear out, but the nut not so much. If the nut has wear and you put new frets, then the guitar will probably buzz at the first frets, because the nut was either cut for lower frets or has so much wear that the strings are way lower than they should. The tricks I have found for getting super glue into extremely tight places is to for starters use a very thin super glue. Second use the whip tips that are thin and flexible and come in extremely thin sizes. The other thing that can help is to wet the surface with a solvent like Lacquer Thinner or Acetone. These are thinning agents for most super glues. But in this situation it helps wick and further thin the superglue into the area you want it to go.

Tapping and then pulling out frets from the side is also a good technique, especially on ebony boards which are much more prone to tear-out/chipping than rosewood, maple, etc.
Also, adding a shallow 'v' to the top of each slot with a triangular file will make fret reinsertion/future fret removal an easier task (they'll go in and come out more easily, but be no less secure while in place).

After cutting the fret ends to the wanted angle, you can speed the finishing process and rounding by using a coarse sanding sponge and GENTLY running it lightly at the correct angle up and down the neck. Yes intuitively you would think it would mangle the fretboard, but it won't and it puts a beautiful round end on them.

Buy a fret press Colin, it makes refretting much easier. I did it with a hammer for years, and you might have to do some that way, but the press makes it a joy, especially fender style guitars. And a fret wire bender!

CSGuitars Awesome video. If you take your guitar to a repair shop to have new frets installed, they charge you an arm and a leg because the amount of work involved is insane. I have an old guitar lying around, so I might try to change out the frets myself ... like you said, "we don't get better at a skill without practicing it.

That badly taxidermy cat head at 0:50 for that 'ree-aaww-eep" sound of that failed bend., is exactly the right visual to match that sounds. And I can't believe how I love that so much!

Bro, thank you for boosting my confidence in dealing with my second hand purchased guitar, a schecter omen-6. the first owner don't have any concern with the guitar, all its metal parts are fully corroded and need to be replaced. The frets are beyond the allowable height for leveling/recrowning. Since I purchase it for just $33, I will make it as a project guitar to practice my woodworking and electronic skills.

It's not that hard. I would recommend buying a fret crowning file and something to use for a sanding block (a small smooth piece of square tubing like 1" or bigger by 6-10 inches long). Use lots of tape to protect stuff and TAKE YOUR TIME! It took me 2-1/2 hours to do a very nice fret job on a guitar which needed minimal work. Pros can probably do it way faster, but it was my first try, and it came out excellent.

I found watching this a great educational tool I’m an aspiring musician and I’ve dabbled in fixing the action and intonation on my guitars now replacing tubes on an 87 fender dual reverb but my school had a guitar or two that are not to expensive but can be used to teach me how to dabble more into tech and fixing instruments with little financial consequences so thank you for making this I’ll be needing to crown file and polish frets on a Tele style guitar that should be fixed rather than thrown out because it is a great SOUNDING guitar just not a great feeling one nicking my fingers so I’ll run three the end of this vid when I get my materials thanks!!!! And Rick on dude I have a warlock myself

My brother gave me his old guitar which he bought at a pawn shop back in probably 2006-08. He had to fix the pickups and some of the frets pieces had to be hammered back into place. Overall it’s kind of a beat-up guitar, but if I ever get the money, I’d love to at least have the fret pieces fixed since there are dead spots and the high E often gets caught on one of the higher pieces sticking out. I never knew the fretboard could affect the playing that much! (I’m still new with guitar) I knew that I was kinda sucky, but it always just seemed like the sound was off and the bass strings would buzz and the treble strings sounded off, I don’t know. Anyway, nice video!

I had fret sprout develop on an Epi Les Paul Prophecy. Tried a few first aid tricks and ended up having it completely refretted and a bone nut installed. That took it from a decent guitar to a great daily driver. Like your Warlock, it felt and played like a completely different guitar.

Excellent video. Possibly playing with a clean tone initially might better reveal any problems - may not sound as 'rawk' but no issues would be masked by the gain/distortion.

Measure all the frets for height. Make a diagram showing the height of each fret. Determine fret height need ed to allow leveling and recrowning. Get fret wire with the same profile as that on the guitar. Pull only those that are to low to be leveled and recrouned. Install new frets, level and crown.

One might expect that expensive guitar brands would all do leveling at the factory but I have found that not always to be the case. I get when entry level guitars don't get that kind of treatment but when an expensive guitar brand doesn't do this it annoys me.
