Where did you get the pick guard and saddles? I have an affinity from the same era and was hesitant to order parts for it. Thank you!!
I upgraded the tuners and bridge on an old Squire strat that used to be a friend's. Turned that piece of crap that wouldn't tune, let alone stay in tune, into a rock solid guitar I play all of the time, I never touched it before except to move it out of my way! the 19.1 ratio Kluson tuners really helped and the original tin bridge wouldn't even intonate because the plate was so soft, the screws drilled into it rather than adjust. $25 Genuine Fender bridge changed that!
Ok, you need to modify it with 3 humbuckers now
When will more pickups be available on your website?
"The strings are 90% rust"
the average bass player: "So they're good for another year or so, right?"
The funk is in the gunk.
What's black and blue and found in a ditch? A guitarist that cracked 1 too many bassist jokes...
@@boomerbassmeme either that or bassists when their mom stops providing for them 🤷♂️
just take em off and boil the fuckers
@@chrisdaviesguitar The strings or the bass player?
I love the axe from the grave series!
It's such a great idea, I love it, too.
Seconded, these are a treat
same, so fun to watch him turn trash into treasure
Yes it’s so satisfying to watch.
Ditto
The music where you put all of the parts back onto the guitar sounds like the outro music to an 80s coming of age movie. I half expected it to say
"The guitar was back into perfect shape and now has a steady job as an office worker."
There's something very satisfying about watching a filthy guitar get cleaned up.
it's why i keep going back to the Schecter Hellraiser restoration video
My guitar ain’t dirty it’s a relic yo!!!!
7:36 THAT SOUTHERN ACCENT GOT ME LAUGHING SO HAIRED- I mean, HARD 😭😭😭😭
I’m glad you made a series of this. I frequently buy cheapo “junk”used guitars just to see how much I can turn it into a playable instrument. (Here in Japan you can get many branded junk guitars for literally tens of dollars) most of the time it’s just a dirty pot or a cold solder joint, worst case a fret level. Anyway point is, I love doing and watching these kinds of things. Please keep the series going. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
If I knew more about properly setting up guitars, I'd so the same
@@rileysummers9757 Watching Colin and a lot of the other guitar youtubers will help. That's where I started and I actually just got hired to do basic set ups, pick up changes and the like, and I'm still learning
"It now smells fantastic, and I'm not afraid to put my face up against it." - Colin, 2021
That's not something you want to shout out ;-) .
That’s what he said. Yes, I am an immature high-schooler.
I work at a small non-profit rock n roll museum with guitars that are in rough shape. Your videos have helped me give them the proper care they have been dying for since before I started here, so thank you!
I WAS doing almost the same thing with my 2006 Fender Showmaster.
Then I lost all motivation. The thing has been sitting in the cage ever since, and STILL in pieces.
call yourself "guitar looser" instead of "guitar nerd"or "lazy guitar looser"
*sees squier, plays jazz* Clean channel, cheap clean pedal, ALL THE CLEAN!! ALLLLLL THEEEEE CLEEEEEEAAAAAAAAN!!!!
Colin got himself an "American accent" pedal
Underrated comment
"young" needed to sound more like "yuuhng" but other than that top quality, im from texas so trust me on that
Colin should impersonate Americans more often 😂
Keep giving me reasons to and I will
@@ScienceofLoud Nae! Try being an AUSSIE!
@@ScienceofLoud You, Colin, have just made a terrible mistake that you definitely did not intend to.
MORE AMERICAN COLIN!!!
Strikingly accurate Southern accent. Maybe a bit exaggerated, but not bad!
The visual difference that black pick guard made, turned it from looking like the £150 it was to a £300 high end squire. Really classy and looks less generic starter guitar, especially paired with those replacement brass saddles.
All I could think while watching was "God, that looks fucking LEGIT"
Awesome work Colin, you've managed to give me G.A.S. for a Squier!
The past week for me has been absolute hell. Watching this has really helped me calm down. So, thank you.
That pick guard makes a huge improvement on the look.
I have one of those strats. Curious to see how yours is doing
EDIT: Caught myself in a lie. Mine is from 1996, 50 years of Fender. Still "only" a squier, but it plays like butter.
I recently just restored an old 1994 Lyon (by Washburn) Strat copy my father got me.
A beautiful clean up of the strat...I entirely agreed with the black pick guard vibe
Affinity squiers from this era are highly underrated. I have a 03 modded made in China that plays like butter.
@Austin Scheerer if any one needs confirmation that these are great guitars check out the video that Phillip McKnight (KNOW YOUR GEAR CHANNEL) done with Rob thorn who is a masterbuilder at fender.
Agree...genuine fender parts fit straight on...
they are fine for a cheap guit
The genuine joy on your face when you got that neck cleaned and ready was pretty endearing man. Great work! Looks awesome mate!!
You're southern American accent through your Scottish accent is pretty hilarious. Please make this a recurring character.
This guitar looked exactly like the windowsills in my house
“So much room for activities” step brothers reference?
Colin, yes, please modify this Squier Strat to be a "Super Strat"! I'd really like to see that (especially since I've picked up a Squier Strat _cheap_ for learning to repair & modify guitars).
Last year (2020) I restored my first black Peavey Predator Strat-style from 1994. I removed all the old "cool" stickers that I applied as a teenager, which left all the large paint chips to show, relic-style. I then applied the copper foil. Installed Graph Tech saddles and trees. Then, one of those loaded black pickguards with switchable polarity switches that gets "68 tones". Stringjoy strings to finish.
Great job!!
I did something similar myself, bought a cheap strat and modded it. Routed a swimming pool route and dropped in three humbuckers! Gigged that for years!! One of the best guitars I had and stayed in tune great!
Great resto job on that strat! 👍
After years of building, restoring and playing all makes of guitars I seem to be drawn to strats more and more.. they're like old slippers, just so comfortable when you get it right. 😎
Colin, if we don’t say it enough...You are appreciated! I think you are brilliant. Between, educational and entertaining content, you always come off as a genuine “good person”. I hope you feel the pride you deserve for your accomplishments. Just wanted to say so. Cheers and thank you for all your videos.
Well done sir!
That Squier Strat really shines now. You should take care and love your guitars, no matter what brand or how much/little they cost.
Over the years I became a hoarder of instruments neglected like this for restoring and playing. Did believe I have 18 guitars in similar conditions but I also neglected them because of you know life. You give the morale boost I needed to restore some and make some donations to local music schools. Thanks man.
Itnisntimento put those washburne, Ohio ibanez and epiphones to a good use.
Thanks for donating them instead of selling!!
@@laa0fa502 Well, I'm fortunate to have money to spend on guitars. Most of the kids in my country don't (I live in Brazil) I think donating them is the right thing to do
@@modergav I agree man! I'm from America but I still don't have to look far to find someone that can use it more than I can use the money. Plus its always an awesome feeling when you're out on the town and see a kid with a guitar you gave him playing on stage or in a music store!
The restoration of that ESP was by far one of my favorite videos. Glad to see you're making more of this stuff.
Yes Colin. Love a good resto. You're channel recently got me inspired to restore one of my old guitars I threw in a case after a show 4 years back. Wouldn't have had the confidence to do it without watching your videos. Thanks mate, all the best from across the border in Newcastle.
I have that exact model and year, and nearly just as dirty
The pickguard was in pieces.
I put a black pickguard on it and polished off all the rust on the chrome
I love the way this series is going. Such a cool idea. I'm here for it man.
Please do more of these restorations. So cool.
I actually scrunched up my nose at the gunk coming off this one
That's a real beauty now! I wouldn't change a thing. It looks and sounds great!
I recently reincarnated a dirty, rusty Samick Avion Les Paul lookalike that I got in a pawn shop for $80 USD. I replaced the rusted bridge and stoptail because the bridge radius didn't match the fingerboard. I used gold plated Gotoh hardware because the guitar had a pretty quilted veneer top, and I replaced the sketchy Duncan Designed humbuckers with gold plated GFS Fat Pats. These clocked in at about 14K bridge and 10K for the neck. I replaced the factory tuners with a set of 40 year old Ibanez Velvetune machines, gold plated with nice pearloid knobs. (I'm sure you're too young to remember Velvetunes, but they were top of the line back in the late 1970s to early 80s.). The switch, knobs and pots were all fine, but I'd like to replace the switch with a gold Switchcraft model, and replace the cream poker chip with a black one. I replaced the cream pickup rings with black ones, ditched the cream pickguard to show off that golden quilted top, and now I have one killer guitar. It is full Les Paul thickness but it only weighs a little over seven pounds. Altogether I spent about $140 USD and ten hours working on this, and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite guitars!
My very first guitar was a 1996 Squier. It was the first year Squier was made in China. My dad walked into the local music store and said, "Give me the cheapest electric guitar you have." They tried to sell him a practice amp with it and he said, "no. My son will get by without it." So my first 7 months of learning guitar was on an electric guitar with no amp. I eventually had to find an amp next to a dumpster. Growing up poor was rad.
I still have that 96 Fender, just recently having to change the pick guard. It still plays wonderfully and while I might not play it as often as my Epiphone Custom pro.... I still pick it up pretty often. It's a great guitar.
I love this series!!! I really hope you do more! Also, cheers to you friend - I caught your Laphroaig 10 in the back during your post-repair play test. I got a lot of catching up on your videos to do, this was the first time I got to see them.
Bringing guitars back to life is one of my life passions. Keep up the great work.
Lovely sound, we are living in a golden age where all the budget guitars sound just good as high price tag ones. There may be a minor difference but can't make out in a band situation.
Well done! Very satisfying to watch the restauration and it sounds great! 10/10 mate!
Well done , wonderful recovery of the guitar !!!!
Thank you so much for these repair and fix up videos. I really enjoy them!
Always a delight to have your vids on my feed Colin. That axe really looks anniversary with the upgrades
Wow the "tuxedo" strat look is awesome!!!! Think i might have to do something similar with my partscaster! Great video, love these ones where you clean up dirty instruments! SLAYERRR!!!
Those Squier Affinity Strats from that period were some of the best bang for you buck guitars ever produced. I picked one up for my Godson to learn to play years ago. Swapped in a black 2 humbucker pickguard with a pair of Epiphone humbuckers I had lying around and gave it a god setup. Great playing guitar. I just recently cleaned it up after years of neglect, and I’ll be damned if it still doesn’t play and sound great.
Hell yeah hell yeah hell yeah!!! Restoration videos were what turned me on to your channel, there my favorites!!!
This series is so satisfying to watch AND educational. Love it!!!
These restoration clean up videos are great , thanks from Canada
I did the same thing to my affinity Strat last year which is from about the same time, 2001-2. It was my first electric and I still love playing it, even more so after I replaced the electrics, new pickups and scratch plate. Funnily enough its the same colour as this one but I put a 3 ply white scratch plate on it.
A great way to learn how to do your own work!
played guitar for 15 years from when i was 8-22/23 when i broke my guitar and couldnt afford/didnt know how to fix it and has been since lost to the ether, 8 years later i just got my first guitar since then 2 months ago and i have learned more about how a guitar works in these two months then i did in 15 years from watching your videos
Just picked up a decent condition Squier Stratocaster from my cousin for about 65 bucks. This video really helped out, since he has very corrosive sweat every metal part that he had made contact was rusted. Luckily after hours the guitar is like new except for a grounding issue and needing new strings and a setup.
Love these restoration and custom project vids!
I'm a simple man I see Colin i click
Nice job. You were right about the black pick guard. Really sharp!
Very cool Colin! I have two Squier Stratocasters myself and I restored them pretty much the same way. Cheers!
As per usual, phenomenal video Colin!
One of the most beautiful guitars I ever seen! Great work!
OMG, that was a true Rat-O-Caster (compared to mine), and the neck was indeed the Cradle of Filth! Now it's just loveliness, a sexy looking axe. Nicely shielded.
Ive done quite a restoration project myself on a old ibanez i got from a friend on mine. It was tucked behind a dresser for many years and had tons of dust and stuff on it. I wish i could show you the before and after photos😁 im definitely not on your level of expertise but you did inspire me to do this and it was very fun
Awesome cleanup job! Loved it
Great job Colin! I just did something similar with a Squier Affinity Strat I found in a Cash Converters. I spent a bit more on mods but it plays like a charm. Great advice!
Would love to see this as an HSH. Great job, Colin - this was an amazing video and restore!
I love videos like this. Its really good to show people that even the most affordable guitars are worth a bit of Spit & Polish and you can make most guitars play well with a little bit of care. Great stuff, I would love to see a restoration video for a Marlin or import BC RIch
Great video. I can tell you had loads of fun editing this. I'm looking forward to the Modding video. I'm a devout SuperStrat guy myself.
Great video! Especially love the brass saddles against the black like that. As far as pickups I’ve always been a fan of John Norum’s sound, and he uses the Dimarzio FS-1s in his Strats.
keep `em coming Colin, I love watching guitars getting upgraded, you could go the obscure route & treat us all to a p`up maker we`re not familiar with.
Love the restoration work, looks great brother :)
I love this kind of videos. Please put more!
Awesome restoration!
I took an old Squier I bought fir about £70. Tuners, bridge saddles and complete electrical make over with rails humbuckers. It was a good result. My son currently possesses it
Came up nicely ... tones are quite good. Enjoyable vid.
ahh ive been waiting for you to make another one of these cleaning videos. they are awesome.
Oh my god the restoration stuff is back, i prayed every day stuff like this came back!
My fav guitar after 4 years of playing is still my 2012 Squier Strat made in Indonesia
This came out looking a lot like the '82 Squier Strat that Steve Rothery (Marillion) favours, and used on some of his most famous solos such as Kayleigh and Easter.
These are really good guitars for peanuts. I bought a near mint 98 Yako made Affinity for £40. A bit of upgrade locking tuners, string trees and loaded pickguard and for less than £100 it would beat any MIM F... it does worth working on these little things and you can learn a lot on set ups and construction. It is shocking that many guitarist cannot even set up their own instruments.
It is almost a completely different guitar. Lovely!
Great restoration!! Sounds great also! 👍👍
I love that guitar! The tone is great, and the Black-on-Black pickguard with the white pups is awesome. Honestly, I would leave it as it is now!
I am doing up a very similar squier, it’s from 04’ . It was originally red but i have painted it turquoise with a matching headstock, not complete yet but it’s coming along great
More from this series, please!
Wow!! I’ve never heard of the reverse wound/polarity middle pickup on a strat! How can you tell if your middle pickup is like that? Is it common?
Love the black pick guard with the white pickups. Tuxedo Strat!
Nice job!! Made a huge difference. And if you're even out on the lake and your engine dies. You can use that headstock to paddle home.
You turned it into a real beauty! Well done! I give it 🦙🦙🦙🦙
I really like these restoration videos.
Incredible what you can do with some good old fashioned elbow grease 👌🏻 great to see guitars saved from the skip!
that is one slick looking Strat....beautiful
Love this series. And these Squier Affinity Strats are really great - my first guitar was one too and I have recently upgraded it heavily with new electronics and a completely scalopped neck. Plays like a 600 € guitar now.
it looked really good with the upgrades. Side note, you have excellent taste in whisky, Laphroaig is one of my favs
Sounds superb too. Spanky!!
I've just bought a well used 2005 epiphone sg standard these videos are very handy for me
more of this!
YES more restoration vids pleaseeeeee
yes! let's see the iron maiden conversion. I grew up in the 80's and really dig Iron Maiden & fast Eddie from Motorhead. both strat players among so many others. Jake e lee & mick mars both I saw together on Ozzy's bark at the moon tour. great work I really enjoy your vids
These are super satisfying! Thanks
